JOSEPH O. FORD

Joseph O. Ford, 57, son of Edna Brunson Ford and the late Delgar Ford Jr., was born Jan. 1, 1952, in Sumter County. He departed this life on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Ford attended the public schools in Sumter County. He entered the U.S. Marine Corps on March 2, 1970, and retired as a master sergeant on Aug. 31, 1993. While serving in the Marine Corps, he received several medals and accolades to include the Republic of Vietnam Commendation Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Master Letter of Appreciation, Vietnam Service Medal, Navy Unit Commendation and the Meritorious Unit Citation. At an early age, he attended Jehovah Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Rev. B.F. Weston. He later accepted Jesus Christ and was baptized under the leadership of Pastor Marion H. Newton.

He leaves to cherish his memory his mother, Edna B. Ford of Sumter; two sons, Johnathan Thurston Ford of St. Helena and Joseph Ford II of Norfolk, Va.; two brothers, Delgar S. (Ann) Ford III and Jeremiah (Geneva) Ford, both of Sumter; two sisters, Shirley F. (Fred Glenn) Brown of Sumter and Diane F. Gardner of Charlotte, N.C.; an uncle, James (Shirul) Ford; an aunt, Gloria Brunson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Deidra Michelle Ford; a brother, Edward Ford; six uncles; and two aunts.

Viewing will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, pastor, assisted by Pastor Velda L. Rucker, eulogist, Ministers Vera Pearson and Carnes Duren Jr. Interment will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.

The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday for viewing until the hour of service.

The family will receive friends at the home, 1033 Old Pocalla Road, Sumter, SC 29150.

Job's Mortuary Inc., 312 S. Main St., is in charge of arrangements.

ALBERT McLEOD Jr.

Albert McLeod Jr., 59, departed this earthly life on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 20, 1949, in Sumter County, he was a son of Albert McLeod Sr. and the late Lillie Bell McLeod. He received his education in the public schools of Sumter County. He was employed by Santee Print Works for more than 40 years.

He leaves to cherish his memories: his father, Albert McLeod Sr. of Sumter; two sons, David (Addrienne) Robinson of Dalzell and Kevin McLeod of Sumter; four grandchildren, Da'Shawn and Da'Shiya Robinson of Dalzell, and Kevin McLeod Jr. and Diamond Reames of Sumter; a very special friend, Susan Farmer (Chrystal and Kisha) of Columbia; a special family member, Mary Lee Mickens; a host of other relatives and friends, all of whom will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lillie Bell McLeod, and his brother, Leroy McLeod.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday from the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel, Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., Sumter, with Bishop Joe C. Tisdale officiating, eulogist, assisted by Minister Gainwell Smith.

The family will receive friends at his home, 119 Byrd St.

The procession will leave from his home at 11:30 a.m.

Floral bearers and pallbearers will be family and friends.

Burial will be in the Antioch United Methodist Church cemetery, U.S. 15 North.

Services directed by the staff and management of Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

MARTHA RIZZO

Martha Rizzo, 73, wife of Julio Rizzo, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009, at Palmetto Health Richland, Columbia.

She was born May 7, 1935, in Sumter, a daughter of the late Charles and Annie Blair. She was a graduate of Manchester High School, Pinewood, and completed her nursing training at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine of the City University of New York. Her career began at the Joint Disease Center in New York and, after moving to Columbia, she worked at Tucker Center and Lexington Medical Extended Care. Mrs. Rizzo was a faithful member at Belmont Baptist Church, Columbia.

Her loving memories will be cherished by her devoted husband of 24 years, Julio Rizzo of Columbia; three children, Patrica (Darryl) Andrews, Eleanor (James) Jones and Gary N. Fisher, all of Columbia; two stepchildren, Vince Rizzo and Violet Boyle; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; eight sisters, Katherine Andrews, Sallie Summers, Agnes Swinton, Ola Sweeney, Earline Wester, Pearline Dunlap, Bobbie McClary and Easter Blair; two brothers, James Blair and Arthur Blair; five brothers-in-law; three sisters-in-law; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Rose; and two brothers, Willie and Charles Blair.

Viewing will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Belmont Baptist Church, 901 Mason Road, Columbia, SC 29203.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Belmont Baptist Church, Columbia, with the pastor, the Rev. Harry S. Girtman, presiding, assisted by Dr. Ralph W. Canty Sr., eulogist, Pastor Cunningham, Pastor Goff and Minister Eddie Summers. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Saturday for viewing until the hour of service.

The family will receive friends at the home, 24 N. Haven Court, Columbia, SC 29203.

SAMUEL N. WINDHAM Sr.

Samuel Newton Windham Sr., 75, widower of Janie Mae Warr Windham, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009, at his residence.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Charles E. Sr. and Daisy Hatchell Windham. Mr. Windham was a former resident of Summerton and a member of Summerton Baptist Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Corinna Windham, Selma Tennant (Danny) and Allison House (Mark), all of Sumter; a son, Charles P. Windham of Sumter; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Samuel N. Windham Jr.; three brothers, Charles E. Windham Jr., Phillip Windham and Harvey J. Windham; and a sister, Selma Young.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Evergreen cemetery in Summerton with Chaplain Michael Jones officiating.

The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, 2785 Bryant Road.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.

DONALD J. MARTIN

Donald J. Martin, 81, widower of Eva M. Martin, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia.

Born in George, Iowa, he was a son of the late Julius Emmett Martin and Mary Margaret Donahue Martin. Mr. Martin was a retired U.S. Air Force veteran and was also a retired Civil Service employee at Shaw Air Force Base.

Surviving are two daughters, Sarah Martin of Amsterdam, Netherlands, and Alyson Martin of Columbia; cousins, Catherine Veenker Kutka, Ralph Veenker Jr., Martin Veenker, Rita Veenker Stockman, Mary Jo Veenker Haarsma, Linda Veenker, Judy Veenker and Dorothy Veenker Staas; and a special cat, "George."

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the home of Ted and Barbara Gose, 16 Warren St.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Friends of the Library, % of the Sumter County Library, 111 N. Harvin St., Sumter, SC 29150, or to the SPCA, 1140 S. Guignard Drive, Sumter, SC 29150.

HOWARD ELLIOTT

MANNING -- Howard Elliott, 78, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, at MUSC hospital in Charleston.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hope Lutheran Church in Vance with Pastor Wayne Young officiating. Entombment will be Monday in Gracelawn cemetery in New Castle, Del.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church prior to the service.

Mr. Elliott was born near Laurel, Del., a son of the late Raymond and Pearl Elliott. He lived in Delaware up until 1985 when he moved to South Carolina. A Navy veteran of the Korean War, he owned Elliott Painting and Contracting of Wilmington, Del., and retired from Allied Chemical/Allied Signal. He was a faithful member and communicant of Hope Lutheran Church.

He was predeceased by his first wife of 41 years, Louise Elliott; sister, Betty Davis; and brothers, Paul and Glenn Elliott.

Surviving are his wife of 15 years, Jean Zogg-Elliott; daughters, Marcie Elliott Forster and husband, Greg Forster, of Maryland and Cheryl Crockett Lee and husband, Ron Lee, of Texas; son, Michael Elliott and wife, Cheryl Elliott, of Maryland; daughter-in-law, Sue Elliott of Delaware; stepsons, Steve Zogg and his wife, Margaret, and David Zogg of New York; sisters, Martha Cimina of Folsom, Pa., and Ruth Walston of East Fallowfield, Pa.; brother and his wife, Raymond Elliott and Ann, of Millsboro, Del.; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hope Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 67, Vance, SC 29163 or Make-a-Wish Foundation, 3520 Meek's Farm Road, Suite C, Johns Island, SC 29455.

JOHNNY OTIS GRAHAM

LYNCHBURG -- Funeral services for Johnny Otis Graham will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Matthew AME Church, 262 Main St., Lynchburg, with the Rev. Emanuel Davis, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in Sanders cemetery.

He died on Monday, Feb. 23, 2009, at Carolinas Hospital System, Florence.

He leaves to cherish his memories: his mother, Retha Graham of Lynchburg; six brothers; two sisters; two uncles; six aunts; nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives and friends.

The family is receiving friends at the home of his mother, 147 Friendly Lane.

Viewing will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Services entrusted to Jefferson Funeral Home, 130 McIntosh St., Lynchburg.

LULA W. THOMAS

BISHOPVILLE -- Funeral services for Lula Wilson Thomas will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Boatwright Funeral Home.

She was born April 18, 1907, to the late Spencer and Serena Wilson, and died Feb. 21, 2009.

She joined New Hope Baptist Church as a young adult and remained a devoted and faithful member in a variety of organizations, including the senior choir and later becoming the mother of New Hope Church family. She was a founding member of the Canty Chapter of the Eastern Stars No. 178, which was established in 1945, and served as treasurer for more than 45 years.

She was married to the late Josh Thomas in December 1927. This union was blessed with four children, two of which preceded her in death, Mavenia Thomas Simon and Gladys Thomas Benjamin; and 20 grandchildren, nine of which preceded her in death. Four sisters, Frances W. Bostic, Sarah W. Pompey, Bessie W. Prescott and Halicue W. Joye; and three brothers, Isaac Wilson, Spencer Wilson Jr. and Whitlow Wilson also preceded her in death.

Left to cherish fond memories are a devoted daughter, Dorothy (Elijah) Forman of Bishopville; a son, Isaac Thomas of Bishopville; 11 grandchildren; 67 great-grandchildren; 35 great-great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Hattie Franklin and Verdie Thomas; a special niece, Inez Murphy; and many other relatives and friends.

JAMES ARCHER SMITH III

SUMMERTON – Retired Lt. Col. James Archer Smith III, 66, husband of Linda Marquis Smith, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Feb. 17, 1943, in Coral Gables, Fla., he was a son of the late James Archer Smith Jr. and Florence Roberts Smith. He was a U.S. Army retired lieutenant colonel, having served his country for 23 years. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama, where he played football for Bear Bryant.

Surviving are his wife of Summerton; a daughter, Susan L. Smith of Fayetteville; two stepbrothers, Randy Smith and Ross Smith, both of Washington; and a sister, Beverly Vetter of Parker, Colo.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lake Marion Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Kennedy officiating.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
