RUBY B. BEARD

Ruby Barfield Beard, 87, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at her home.

Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late George Washington Barfield and Alice Thigpen Barfield. Mrs. Beard was a member of Pinedale Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include five sons, Homer D. Beard of Sumter, Thurmon D. Beard (Linda) of Sumter, C. Neil Beard (Phyllis) of Manning, Legrant Beard (Betsy) of Summerton and Donnie Beard of Sumter; five daughters, Carol Lori Covington of Columbia, Jeanette Beatson (Jim) of Sumter, Frankie McCabe (David) of Manning, Barbara A. Potter (Wayne) of Sumter and Lisa Y. Osborne (Al) of Sumter; 17 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and three special caregivers, Joycesteen Mack, Sylvia Amerson and Juanita Rattler.

She was preceded in death by a beloved daughter-in-law, Susie Beard; two brothers, James Barfield and Barto Barfield; and two sisters, Julia Frye and Minerva Chandler.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with Dr. S. Norman Rogers and the Rev. Claudie Osborne officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Kee Beard, Cadby Beard, Brad Beatson, Bert Beatson, Arnie McCabe and Walt Beard.

Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons, Troy Beard, Rhett Beard, Ryan Beard and Oz Osborne; and granddaughters, Janet Beard, Katie Beard, Janeen Webb, Lindy Morris, Stephanie Roberts, Alli Osborne and Deedee Coats.

The family will receive friends at 3 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home, 3080 Cox Road.

The family wishes to express special thanks to Dr. Phillip Brandt.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association Palmetto Chapter, 4124 Clemson Blvd., Suite L, Clemson, SC 29621; or to a church of one's choice.

RUTH R. WARDER

Ruth Audrey Rasmussan Warder, 82, beloved wife of the late Leslie R. Warder, died on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at Hopewell Healthcare Center.

She was born in Niagara Falls, N.Y., a daughter of the late Carl Julius and Ethel Hagerman Rasmussan. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Surviving are a son, Richard James Warder and his wife, Janice, of Lufkin, Texas; two daughters, Kathleen Leslie McLean and her husband, David, of Florence and Karen W. Ford and her husband, Erik, of Sumter; five grandchildren, Dawn Warder, Debbie Warder, Susie Matheson, John Warder and Amy McLean; and 16 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Matthew Suggs officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Bullock Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Southern Care Hospice, 720 Gracern Road, Suite 122, Columbia, SC 29210; the Alzheimer's Association Mid-State S.C. Chapter, P.O. The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter for the arrangements.

SHERMAN JACKSON

Sherman Jackson, widower of Fannie Wilson Jackson, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

Born in Rock Hill, he was the third of four children born to the late Robert Jackson and Susanna Jackson Dixon. Mr. Jackson was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was a graduate of Lincoln High School in the Class of 1942. He attended North Carolina A&T College, where he first studied chemistry and later majored in masonry and drafting. He served his country in the U.S. Army and was a World War II veteran. He was a brick mason in the construction industry for many years. He was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Missionary Church, where he served faithfully in many capacities including: trustee, member of the finance committee, co-chairman of the music committee and member of the senior, gospel and men's choirs. He was the secretary of the Brown-Lawson Housing Development Corp., which was the sponsor of the Shiloh-Randolph Manor housing development. He was a charter member of the Birnie Elks Lodge No. 1195.

Funeral services will be held at noon Friday at First Baptist Missionary Church with the pastor, the Rev. George Windley Jr., officiating. Interment will follow in Walker cemetery.

Mr. Jackson will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. for viewing until the hour of service.

The public may view Mr. Jackson after 2 p.m. today and the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel.

The family will receive friends at the family residence, 1020 Truitt St.

Palmer Memorial Chapel of Sumter is in charge of funeral arrangements.

MARY M. JOHNSON

Mary Mack Johnson, of 25 D Granada St., Asheville, N.C., entered eternal rest on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

She was a daughter of the late Silas Mack and Nora Shaw Johnson Maynor. Mary was born in Sumter County on Dec. 26, 1958. She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County.

She leaves to cherish her memories: a brother, Robert Johnson of Paxville; and two sisters, Willie Mae Rheames of Buffalo, N.Y., and Ellan Louise Johnson of Asheville.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of Community Funeral Home with the Rev. Joseph Ricks officiating.

Viewing will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of these arrangements.

WALTER J. MOYER

Walter Jack Moyer, 77, beloved husband of Beverly Stone Moyer, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at his home.

He was born in Alpha, N.J.

Arrangements will be announced by Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter.

JAMES PEARSON

BISHOPVILLE -- James Pearson, son of Elijah Pearson, died March 2, 2009, in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Mark Baptist Church in Bishopville. Burial will be in the St. Mark cemetery.

Square Deal Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

ELNATHER S. KINGWOOD

Elnather Singleton Kingwood, 88, widow of Ollie Kingwood Sr., died Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at Mariner Health East.

Born Sept. 29, 1920, in Alcolu, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Frances Singleton. At an early age, Mrs. Kingwood joined Oak Grove Baptist Church. She was a devoted and faithful member until illness limited her activities. She served in numerous capacities and also as mother of the church.

Survivors include a son, Ollie Kingwood Jr. (Comillian) of Alcolu; daughters, Annie Mack and Marol Harvin (Davis), both of Sumter; brother, Julius Green of Sumter; sisters, Ruby Singleton of Norwalk, Conn., Elease Reynolds (Charles) of Sumter and Inez Cureton of Buffalo, N.Y.; 30 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Fleming and DeLaine Chapel, Manning.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Oak Grove Baptist Church, Alcolu, with the Rev. Terry Johnson officiating, assisted by the Rev. Otis Blackwell, the Rev. Dennis Brock and the Rev. Dr. C. Richburg. Burial will be in Harmony Elizabeth cemetery.

The family will receive friends at 40 Pioneer Court.

Fleming & DeLaine Funeral Home and Chapel of Manning is in charge of services.

MARIE PRINCE

LYNCHBURG -- Marie Prince died Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at McLeod Hospice House, Florence.

The family is receiving friends at the home of her granddaughter, Betty Jean Prince, 2237 Pleasant Grove Road, Lynchburg.

Services are incomplete and will be announced later by Jefferson Funeral Home, 130 McIntosh St., Lynchburg.

ARVIS M. WILLIAMS

SUMMERTON -- Arvis Marcellus "Bo-Bo" Williams, 36, died Friday, Feb. 27, 2009, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born May 16, 1972, in Hollywood, Fla., he was a son of Willie Mae Lawson and the late Stanley Williams. Arvis was educated at Collins Elementary, St. Paul Elementary, Scott's Branch High and Hollywood Hills High School and was best known for sports and his artistic ability. He excelled in wrestling, baseball and basketball. He was a self-taught, self-employed barber since age 14. In addition to his work as a barber, he was employed by Meritor and Co. for two and a half years, where he immediately earned a position as a supervisor. At the time of his death, he was employed by Williams Builders of Vance. "Bo-Bo" had a fun-loving personality and will be missed by all who knew him.

Those left to grow from his love and cherish his memory are a loving mother, Willie Mae Lawson of Hollywood, Fla.; four children, Bryshawn Williams and Jalisa James, both of Hollywood, Arvis Williams Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio, and Armani Hunter of Live Oak, Fla.; four brothers, Alphonso Gibson and Terrance Williams, both of Summerton, and Stanford Williams and Jerod Williams, both of Miami, Fla.; five sisters, Sheanita Williams of Hollywood, Turkessa Williams, Lotasha Williams, Shemika Williams and Noleka (Alphonso) Carter, all of Miami; six uncles, the Rev. Willie T. (Mattie) Lawson of Fort Washington, Md., the Rev. Johnnie Lee (Elanora) Lawson, the Rev. David (Virginia) Lawson and Michael Lawson Darryl Lawson, all of Summerton, and James Mack of Miami; five aunts, Dorothy (Harry) James, Lorene (Marco) Johnson, Kara Lawson and Patricia (Frank) Gibbs, all of Summerton, and Barbara (Ronald) Nelson of Miramar, Fla.; a dear loving friend, Gweendaly Pearson of Davis Station; a special god sister, Shaquelia Blanding of Miami; two special god brothers, Rodney Pough of Dania, Fla., and Tanarvis Drain of Hollywood; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Williams will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church. The service will be officiated by the Rev. Dr. William T. Johnson, the Rev. David Lawson, the Rev. Johnnie Lee Lawson, the Rev. Marco Johnson and the Rev. Dr. Willie T. Lawson. Burial will follow in Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church cemetery.

The remains will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. until the hour of the services.

The family will receive friends at the homes of his aunts, Dorothy James, 1139 Dinah Montgomery Road, Summerton, and Kara Lawson, 1080 Detwiller Road, Summerton.

Viewing will be held today at the funeral home from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Summerton Funeral Service, 23 S. Duke St., Summerton, (803) 485-3755.

TOMMY E. MASON Sr.

CLOVER -- Tommy Eugene Mason Sr., 62, widower of Frances Beck Mason, died March 4, 2009, at Palmetto Health Richland, Columbia.

Mr. Mason was born March 11, 1946, in Lincolnton, N.C., to the late Jerry Vance and Geneva Sisk Mason.

Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, 209 N. Main St., Clover.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

BERTHA P. LOWERY

Bertha Lee Peterson Lowery, widow of Eddie J. Lowery Sr., died Monday, March 2, 2009, at Providence Hospital Northeast, Columbia.

Born in St. Charles, she was a daughter of the late Hennigan and Rebecca White Peterson. She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. At an early age, she joined the Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, where served on the usher board, the missionary society and the senior choir.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two infant children; a son, Herbert Lowery; and a brother, Samuel J. Peterson.

Survivors include eight children, Lillie Mae (Joseph) Coulter of Charlotte, N.C., Eddie J. (Shanasia) Lowery Jr. of Hopkins, Alexander Lowery, Johnny (Gloria) Lowery and Moses Lowery, all of New York, Bilal (Nadia) Rasheed of Atlanta, Mary Ann (Andrew) Gillens of Columbia and Susie Mae (Leon Jr.) Bolton of Summerville; a stepson, Joseph (Mary) Lowery of Hartsville; 24 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Fulton Street, Sumter, with the Rev. Eugene Myers officiating. Interment will follow in the Mayesville Community cemetery.

Mrs. Lowery will lie in state from noon until the hour of service.

Those wishing to leave with the funeral procession should arrive at the Lowery residence, 124 McCutcheon St., Mayesville, no later than 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

The public may view from noon until 8 p.m. today.
