WILLIE MAE C. SHULER

Willie Mae Cain Shuler, 73, widow of Wilbur Shuler Sr., died March 1, 2009, at Memorial Regional Hospital, Hollywood, Fla.

Born May 17, 1935, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Perry and Mamie Roberts Cain. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In her youth, she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and joined Union Cypress AME. After moving to Florida, she joined Greater Ward Chapel AME Church, where she was a faithful member. She retired from the Broward County School System in 2001.

Survivors are a son, Wilbur Shuler Jr. of South Florida; three daughters, Joann (Ricky) Wiggins, Brenda and Linda (Mario) Michel, all of South Florida; three sisters, Marie Mack of Hallandal, Fla., Fletcher Dingle of Portsmouth, Va., and Mattie C. King of Manning; a brother, George (Margaret) Cain of Manning; and five grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Greater Ward Chapel AME Church, Hallandale, with the Rev. Dr. W. Williams Jr., pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Hallandale cemetery.

These services have been entrusted to E.A. Stevens Funeral Home PA, 315 N.W. Pembrooke Road, Hallandale.

ABIE CUBBAGE

ALCOLU – Abie Cubbage, 85, widower of Myrta Bradham Cubbage, died Friday, March 6, 2009, at his home.

Born Nov. 3, 1923, in Alcolu, he was a son of the late Peter and Ola McCall Cubbage. He was retired from Carolina Furniture Works in Sumter and was a member of Clarendon Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Frances Ann Eanes and her husband, Tom, and Lillian Holladay and her husband, Don, of Manning; a son, Henry Louis Cubbage and his wife, Susan, of Manasses, Va.; a sister, Minnie Lee Bradham and her husband, Vernon, of Chapin; seven grandchildren, Rob Holladay, Kyle Holladay, Delmer Igo, Tammy Epps, Cynthia Cubbage, Wendy Cubbage and John Henry Cubbage; and a great-grandson, Andrew Cubbage.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Clarendon Baptist Church with the Rev. Kirk Carlisle officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove cemetery in Manning.

Pallbearers will be Rob Holladay, Kyle Holladay, Delmer Igo, David Epps, Terry Evans and John Igo.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning and at other times at the home of Don and Lillian Holladay, 8926 Greeleyville Highway, Manning.

Memorials may be made to Clarendon Baptist Church, P.O. Box 307, Alcolu SC 29001.

DR. HARRY L. HARVIN Jr.

DURHAM, N.C. – Dr. Harry Lewis Harvin Jr., 85, died Thursday, March 5, 2009. He was a resident of Croasdaile Village in Durham.

The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham with the Rev. David Harvin and the Rev. Steve Hickle officiating.

Visitation will be an hour before and after the service.

Burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Sumter cemetery.

Surviving are three children, David Harvin and his wife, Sue, of Chapel Hill and Fayetteville, John Harvin and his wife, Judi, of Germany and Mary Harvin McDonald and her husband, Max, of Laurinburg; four grandchildren, Anna Reid Harvin and husband, Santiago Davila, Maggie Harvin, Emily McDonald and Will McDonald; a sister, Sarah Reid Keels; and many nieces and nephews.

Dr. Harvin was born on Aug. 7, 1923, in Sumter, son of Harry L. and Sarah Reid Griffin Harvin. He grew up in Manning and graduated from Wofford College in 1943. He served in World War II from 1943-1945 in the 141st infantry 36th division of the Army, mostly in Italy. After the war, he completed his master of arts and doctor of philosophy in history at Duke University. Dr. Harvin taught at Columbia College from 1951-1960, then at St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg from 1960-1984.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Andrews Presbyterian College, 1700 Dogwood Mile, Laurinburg, NC 28352.

JESSE B. WASHINGTON Jr.

Jesse B. Washington Jr., 62, beloved husband of Shirley Wells Washington, died Monday, March 2, 2009, at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia.

Born in San Antonio, he was a son of the late Jesse Sr. and Doris Toliver Washington. Mr. Washington served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed at Shaw Air Force Base in 1979 until his retirement as a technical sergeant in 1993. During the 1970's, his military assignments included: Azores, Portugal, Germany, Kenya, South America, Iran and Guyana. While in Guyana, he supervised the return of Americans who died at the Jim Jones Compound. He was awarded numerous military awards, including: the Joint Service, Air Force, and Army Commendation Medals, Medal of Air Force Achievement, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Air Force Overseas Ribbon, Longevity Service Ribbon and the NCO, PMF Award.

After retiring, Mr. Washington was employed as a human resource supervisor/manager at Labor World in Sumter and as director of Sumter Personnel, field supervisor and instructor of Wells Fargo Guard Services in Sumter and Burns International Client Services supervisor and instructor, Area 2, Jacksonville, Fla. His final employment was with the U.S. Postal Service in Columbia.

At an early age, Mr. Washington was baptized at Trinity Baptist Church in San Antonio and later became a member of the House of God Church in Bishopville.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Washington of the home; two daughters, Sonya and Tonya Washington of Anderson, Texas; two sisters, Elizabeth (Larry) Shippy of San Antonio and Alice "Faith" Payne of Las Vegas; a brother, Robert (Evelyn) Washington of San Antonio; three sisters-in-law, Ethel Wells of Sumter, Doris Wells of Bronx, N.Y., and Rose (Luke) Walker of Cleveland; two brothers-in-law, James (Julia) Wells of Sumter and Elder Eston (Naomi) Wells of Florence; two goddaughters, Kristen and Katrina James of Sumter; two special sisters, Dr. Marilyn Bennett and Julia Brown of Sumter; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the House of God Church, 214 Cedar Lane, Bishopville, with Pastor Eston Wells Jr. officiating, assisted by General Elder Elijah Green. Interment will follow in the Florence National cemetery.

Mr. Washington will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. for viewing until the hour of service.

The public may view Mr. Washington from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday and at other times at the residence, 2195 Avalon Drive.

Palmer Memorial Chapel of Sumter is in charge of funeral arrangements.

LARRY H. CULICK

Larry H. Culick, 62, husband of Linda Mathis Culick, died Friday, March 6, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Lake City, he was a son of the late Herbert and Christine Hodge Culick. Mr. Culick retired from Singleton Steel.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years; three children, Larry "Lee" Culick (Irene) of Sumter, Christy Dycus (John) of Summerville and Julie Mooney (Ron) of Sumter; and four grandchildren, Autumn Parnell, Joseph Culick, Allison Culick and Adam Mooney.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Melvin Culick.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Eddie Richardson officiating. Burial will be in Sumter cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Culick, 210 Trillium Lane, Sumter, SC 29154.

Memorials may be made to Bible Fellowship Church, 227 Broad St., Sumter, SC 29150; or to the American Lung Association, 1817 Gadsden St., Columbia, SC 29201-2392.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.

PAUL HARPER

Paul Harper, 81, husband of Goldie Spears Harper, died Friday, March 6, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Washington, Ga., on Sept. 14, 1927, a son of the late Willie Davis Harper and Alleane McClendon Mills.

The family will receive friends at the home, 350 Plowden Road, Sumter, SC 29153.

Funeral plans are incomplete and will be announced later by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

WARREN JACKSON

Warren Jackson, 77, husband of Irene Scriven Jackson, died Saturday, March 7, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter County, he was the son of the late Shepherd Jackson Sr. and Maggie White Jackson and the stepson of the late Pansy Moody Jackson.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the home, 3425 Brewington Road, Dalzell.

Funeral services are incomplete and will be announced by Scriven Funeral Home.

JOHNNIE STUKES

BISHOPVILLE -- Johnnie Stukes, husband of Mae Emma Stukes, died Friday, March 6, 2009, at McCoy Nursing Home.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 612 James St.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Boatwright Funeral Home.

MARIE H. PRINCE

LYNCHBURG -- Marie Hardy Prince, 88, died Wednesday, March 4, 2009.

She was born Feb. 23, 1921, to the late George and Elise Hardy.

Mrs. Prince is survived by her children, Alline, Robert and Moses; two siblings; 36 grandchildren; 67 great-grandchildren; 30 great-great grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Goodwill Presbyterian Church (USA) in Mayesville with the Rev. Dr. Ella F. Busby officiating.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Jefferson Funeral Home, 130 McIntosh St., Lynchburg, is in charge of arrangements.

DELLA ALSTON

KINGSTREE -- Della Lee Brown Alston died Thursday, March 5, 2009 at Williamsburg Regional Hospital.

The family is receiving friends at 87 Law St., Lane.

Funeral services are incomplete and will be announced later by Henryhand Funeral Home of Kingstree.

ELLA M. PATTERSON

Ella M. Patterson, 77, wife of F.J. "Bud" Patterson, died Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Airdrie, Scotland, U.K., she was a daughter of the late William A. Freeburn and the late Cristina Cookman Freeburn. She was of the Presbyterian faith.

Survivors besides her husband include a daughter, Linda S. Lane (Bruce) of Chicago, Ill.; a son, Thomas Patterson (Cathy) of Sumter; and five grandchildren, Thomas Patterson, Kaley Patterson, Dusty Keefe, Kristen Lane and Justin Lane; and a great-grandchild, Gavin Patterson.

Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Dr. Tony Gould officiating.

Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home.
