RICHARD LEE NELSON

Richard Lee Nelson, 60, died Sunday, March 15, 2009, at CM Tucker Jr. NCC in Columbia.

Born Oct. 30, 1948, he was a son of the late James and Emily Nelson.

The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home, 2988 Chewning Road, Pinewood.

Funeral plans are incomplete and will be announced by Community Funeral Home of Sumter.

JOHN D. BROWN Sr.

MANNING -- John Dobbins Brown Sr., 62, husband of Carrie Blackwell Brown, died Monday, March 16, 2009, at Palmetto Health Baptist, Columbia.

Born Jan. 27, 1947, in Portland, Ore., he was a son of the late John and Christine Bullock Brown.

The family is receiving friends at the home, 1253 Jassamine Way, Manning.

These services have been entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

MARSHALL DENNIS

Marshall Dennis, 55, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at St. Joseph Hospital, Philadelphia.

Born Nov. 9, 1953, in Sumter County, he was a son of Evelena Nelson Dennis and the late Micheal Dennis Sr. He attended the public schools of Sumter County and graduated from Ebenezer High School. At an early age, he accepted Christ and was baptized and became a member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church. He was employed at E.I. DuPont De Nemours and Co. Inc., May Plant, Camden, for several years before moving to Philadelphia. There he was employed with Liberty Janitorial Service until his health failed him.

Marshall's memories will be cherished by his mother, Evelena Nelson Dennis; two daughters, Christie L. Dennis and Charlene M. Dennis, both of Sumter; four sisters, Ruby Mae Sanders of Philadelphia, Catherine D. Wilson and Ollie Mae Dinkins, both of Rembert, and Diane (Calvin) Sanders of Vallejo, Calif.; a devoted special friend, Charmine Cobb of Philadelphia; a grandson, KeShawn M. Croskey of Sumter; a granddaughter, Kiara M. Croskey of Sumter; two aunts; a brother-in-law; a sister-in-law, Martha E. Dennis of Sumter; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mabel and Evelyn; and three brothers, Micheal Jr., Russell and Baby Boy Dennis.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday from Mount Pisgah Baptist Church, U.S. Highway 521 North, Rembert, with the Rev. Anthony Taylor Sr., pastor, eulogist, assisted by Minister William Dukes.

The family will receive friends at the home of his mother, Evelena N. Dennis, 3850 Spencer Road, Rembert.

The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.

The funeral procession will leave from the home of his mother at 1:30 p.m.

Floral bearers will be nieces and friends of the family.

Pallbearers will be nephews and friends of the family.

Burial will be in Mount Pisgah Baptist Churchyard cemetery, Rembert.

RICHARD LEE NELSON

PINEWOOD -- Richard Lee Nelson, 60, entered eternal rest on Sunday, March 15, 2009, at the CM Tucker Jr. Nursing Home in Columbia.

Born Oct. 30, 1948, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late James and Emily Hampton Nelson. He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. He joined Antioch UME Church early in life and was a faithful member until his health failed. He sang with the male chorus, served on the steward board, and was one of the past church treasurers. He was employed at Federal Mogul for 10 years.

He was joined in holy wedlock to Gladys Williams Nelson and to this union three children were born.

He is survived by a loving wife, Gladys W. Nelson of the home; four children, Sandra Nelson-Webber (Dallas) of Landover, Md., Geffrey Nelson (Sally) of Norcross, Ga., Brenda L. Williams (Duray) of Columbia and Gloria Vaughn (Christopher) of Hampton, Ga.; four grandchildren, Rashid Nelson and N'aja Nelson, both of Norcross, and Victoria Vaughn and Christian Vaughn, both of Hampton; a sister, Mable Nelson of Manning; two brothers, Boston Nelson of the home and Ernest Nelson of Manning; his father-in-law, Esau Junious of Pinewood; five sisters-in-law, Mateline Junious, Julia Jenkins (Stanley), Rutha Mae Adams (Louis), Ruth Williams of Pinewood and Willene K. Linton of Summerton; six brothers-in-law, Nathaniel Williams (Bertha) and Robert L. Williams (Ruth), both of Pinewood, Jerome Williams of Summerton, Ernest Williams (Loretta) of Florence, Isaac Junious (Yolonda) of Manning and Esau Junious of Sumter; three additional sisters-in-law; 10 aunts; one uncle; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Nelson Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Antioch UME Church in Rimini with Pastor Jonathan Smith officiating, the Revs. Mary Lou Brailsford and Bertha Smith assisting. Burial will follow in Antioch Memorial Garden, Rimini.

Viewing will take place from 2 to 7 p.m. today.

The family is receiving visitors at the home, 2988 Chewning Road, Pinewood.

The procession will leave from the home at 1:15 p.m. Thursday.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of these arrangements.

THEODORE BLANDING Jr.

PHENIX CITY, Ala. -- Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in the Nichols Chapel Church, Phenix City, for Theodore Blanding Jr.

Mr. Blanding, 73, husband of Bobbie Ezekiel Blanding, entered eternal rest on Thursday, March 12, 2009, in Phenix City.

Born Aug. 29, 1935, in Manning, he was a son of the late Theodore Sr. and Mary Lizzie Blanding.

Survivors are his wife, Bobbie E. Blanding of Phenix City; a daughter, Meredith Blanding of Phenix City; three brothers, Richard Blanding and David Blanding (Lily), both of Sumter, and Ashby Blanding (Lorna) of Riverdale, Ga.; five sisters, Alma Montgomery, Naomi Blanding and Olivia Johnson, all of Sumter, Fredosher Campbell (Dwight) of New York, N.Y., and Frances Blanding of College Park, Ga.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister, Aaron Blanding, Mathew Blanding and Sara Blanding.

EVERLINE SMILING

Everline Smiling died Monday, March 16, 2009, at her residence in Sumter.

Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Deacon John F. and Mary Magdalene Tindal Smiling.

The family will receive friends at the Smiling residence, 1165 Radical Road.

Palmer Memorial Chapel of Sumter is in charge of funeral arrangements.

GARY WEST

Gary West, age 37, beloved husband of Cindy West, died on Thursday, March 19, 2009, at his residence.

He was born in Washington, D.C., a son of Mary Shaw and the late Anthony Shaw. He was a certified Microsoft system analyst and formerly worked at Seton Hall University in the IT Department.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are two daughters, Monique Jones and Brianna Simone West, both of Sumter; twin brother, Larry West of Yorkstown, N.Y.; and a sister, Martina West of Tennessee.

Services will be held at a later date at Pope Funeral Home in Forestville, Md.

Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of the local arrangements.

RICHARD PRINCE

Mr. Richard Prince entered eternal rest on Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 5, 1946, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Simon Ernest Prince and Carrie Scott.

He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was a member of Mulberry Baptist Church in Sumter. He was employed as a paint maker with Southern Coatings for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Polite Prince of Sumter; two sons, Ervin Prince Jr., and Jerome (Misty) Prince of Bossier, La.; one daughter, Latosha Prince of Sumter; one brother, Joseph Leon (Rosa Marie) Prince; three sisters, Jeanetta Potts, Mary Elizabeth Walters, Lillian Prince; four stepsisters, Delphine (Ervin) Gordon, Mary Ann Gaymon, Sadie Sharpe and Alice (Abraham) Champagne, all of Sumter; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday at the Church of God By Faith, Sumter, with the Elder James Lucas, pastor.

Burial will follow in Bradford cemetery.

A viewing will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

The family is receiveing relatives and friends at the home of his sister, Mary Walters, 44 Lincoln Ave., Sumter, where a procession will leave from at 1:15 p.m. on Monday.

Community Funeral Home is in charge of these arrangements.

JERRY M. TURNER

Jerry Mitchell Turner, 61, died Friday, March 13, 2009, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Turner was born on Jan. 14, 1948, in Dillon, and was the son of the late Richard C. Turner and Mildred Clark Turner.

He retired from Federal Mogul where he was a machinist. He was a member of New Calvary Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Brian Keith Turner and Richard "Ricky" Nelson Turner both of Sumter; a sister and brother-in-law, Debbie and William Smith of Sumter; two grandchildren, Laten Turner and Brittany Ann Turner, both of Sumter; a niece, Jennifer Smith; a nephew, Chad Smith and his wife, Deanna; an uncle, Carl R. Turner; and lifelong and special friends, Myron Somersett and David Linnville.

The family will receive friends at Bullock Funeral Home from 3 to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home for arrangements.

ROBERT E. HILLSTRAND

MANNING – Robert Ernest Hillstrand, 86, husband of Mildred Ahmann Hillstrand, died Sunday, March 15, 2009, at Agape Senior TCU in West Columbia.

Born Sept. 7, 1922, in Chicago, he was a son of the late Frank and Mabel Schrader Hillstrand. He was a retired supervisor for United Technologies; a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II; and a member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church.

Surviving besides his wife of Columbia are a daughter, Renee H. Johnson and her husband, Scott, of Columbia; two sons, Randy Hillstrand of Lexington, Ky., and Rob Hillstrand and his wife, Brenda, of Georgetown, Ky.; a grandchild, Robyn Sturgeon and her husband, Tom, of Versailles, Ky.; and two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Anna Kay and Jonathon.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church with Father David Whitman officiating.

Ida Mae Chennault McCain, widow of James T. McCain Sr., died Sunday, March 15, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Tignall, Wilkes County, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Johnny and Rhoda Ashmore Chennault.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel of Sumter.
