ANTHONY PLEASANT Jr.

Tony Pleasant Jr. was born on June 20, 1945, in Pinewood, to the late Anthony Pleasant Sr. and Sarah Pleasant Spencer. He entered into eternal rest on Friday, March 13, 2009.

Mr. Pleasant joined Damascus Baptist Church as a youth. He graduated from Lincoln High School and Sumter Area Technical College. He worked for V.B. Williams Furniture Co. for more than 20 years and United Parcel Services of America. On Nov. 20, 1965, he was united in holy matrimony to the late Annie Bell Johnson Pleasant. To this union, three children were born, Stacey Anthony Pleasant, Kevin Lamar Pleasant and Gwendolyn S. Pleasant Pearson.

He leaves to cherish his memories: three children, Stacey Anthony Pleasant of Greensboro, N.C., Kevin Lamar Pleasant and Gwendolyn Selena (James) Pleasant Pearson of Sumter; two grandchildren, Crystal Pearson and Keyonti Pleasant, both of Sumter; three sisters, Ola Mae (the Rev. Marion) Walters and Gloria (Alex) Gadson of Sumter and Susan Nathaniel of Brooklyn, N.Y.; an adopted brother, the Rev. Jamie Pleasant of Atlanta; brother-in-law, Marvin (Mary) of Sumter; sisters-in-law, Jessie Mae Johnson of Sumter and Pat Johnson of Orlando, Fla.; aunt, Mary McFadden; uncle, Nathaniel Pleasant of Pinewood; a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends who will truly miss him.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Bell Pleasant; a brother, Joe Louis Pleasant; and a brother-in-law, Herbert Johnson.

Funeral services for Mr. Pleasant will be held at 1 p.m. today in the Sumter Funeral Services Chapel with Pastor M.G. Walters officiating, assisted by the Rev. Michael Walters.

The family will leave the home at 12:20 p.m. for the services.

Interment will follow in Bradford cemetery.

Sumter Funeral Service Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

JEWEL E. CUBBAGE

Jewel Estelle Edens Cubbage died on Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Services are incomplete and will be announced by Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter.

WILLIAM I. BLACKWELL

William Ikeem Blackwell, 24, died on Wednesday, March 18, in Sumter.

He was the son of William Calvin Jr. and Teresa Blackwell. He was born on August 5, 1984 in Bridgeport, Conn.

The family is receiving friends at the home of his mother, 26 Rast Street, Apt. 22, in Sumter.

Services have been entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home, LLC, of Manning.

PORTIA W. CLARKE

Portia Evette Williams Clarke, 57, of Horatio, died Friday, March 13, 2009.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Chapel of Remembrance, Brown's Funeral Home, with burial in Willow Grove AME Church Cemetary, Horatio. Brown's Funeral Home in Camden is serving the Clarke family.

ROBERT MCLALLEN

Robert McLallen died on Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia. Services are incomplete and will be announced by Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter.

MARTHA P. MCALLISTER

WEST COLUMBIA -- Martha Rosemary Partridge McAllister, 87, beloved wife of the late Sir Charles McAllister of Marlow Bucks, UK, died peacefully on March 17, 2009.

She was born on June 28, 1921, in Pickens, a daughter of the late Ella Elizabeth Finley and Jesse Troup Partridge.

She was a 1942 graduate of Lander College with graduate studies from the University of Maryland. She served in the United States Navy during World War II. She taught for more than 30 years with the Department of Defense American schools throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East. She enjoyed golf, skiing and her beautiful English garden.

She was dearly loved and admired by her many nieces, nephews and international friends.

She was predeceased by: two brothers, James Findley Partridge and William Franklin Partridge; and one sister, Bess Ware Partridge Bethea.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 200, 2009, at Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Christopher Denny of Myrtle Beach Presbyterian Church officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home for the arrangements.

WILLIE JOE

Deacon Willie Joe of 76 Plum Lane in Camden, died Wednesday at Kershaw County Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete, and will be announced later by Square Deal Funeral Home.

EVERLINA SMILING

Everlena Smiling, 67, died Monday, March 16, 2009, at her residence in Sumter. Born in Sumter County, she was the seventh of eight children born to the late Deacon John and Mrs. Mary Magdalene Smiling. She was educated in the Clarendon County School System and was a graduate of Manning Training School. She was a lifelong member of Bethesda Baptist Church, where she served in many capacities, including usher, choir member, missionary, pastor's aide, Sunday School teacher and youth group assistant. She was employed in the garment industry while residing in New York.

Survivng are four sisters: Earnestine (Leon) Pack of Sumter; Eula Mae (Charles) Dozier of Manning; Rebecca ( Elder Louis) Lacey of Richmond, Va., Gardenia (Ralph) Sligh of Columbia, S.C.; two brothers: Elder John H. (Frances) Smiling and Pastor Al (Eyvonne) Smiling, all of Sumter; an aunt, Ardelle Smiling of Sumter and other relatives.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Salem Missionary Baptist Church, 320 Fulton St., Sumter with the Rev. Dr. N. Lamont Newsome, pastor, Elder M. Louis Lacey, presiding, and the Rev. Billy Mack Graham, eulogist.

Interment will follow in the Bethesda Church cemetery.

Ms. Smiling will be placed in the church at 2:00 p.m. for viewing until the hour of service. The public may also view from 2 to 5 p.m. today at the Palmer Memorial Chapel and a wake service will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening at the Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church, Highway 15 South, Sumter. Those wishing to depart from the family residence with the funeral procession, should meet no later than 2:00 p.m., Saturday, at 1165 Radical Road in Sumter.

Palmer Memorial Chapel of Sumter is in charge of funeral arrangements.

HASKELL EDWARDS

Haskell Edwards, 58, died Thursday, March 19, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medial Center in Sumter. Born in Sumter County on Oct. 18, 1950, he was the son of James Edwards Sr. and the late Bessie Mae Richardson Edwards.

The family will receive friends at the home of Sammie and Betty Generette, 3 Shuler Drive, Sumter. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc.

JOHN D. BROWN Sr.

John Dobbins Brown Sr., 62, husband of Carrie Blackwell Brown, died Monday, March 16, 2009, at Palmetto Baptist Hospital, Columbia. Born Jan. 27, 1947, in Elm City, N.C., he was the son of the late John Brown and Christine Bullock Brown.

He received his formal education in the public schools of Portland, Ore. After college, he joined the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged. After moving to South Carolina, he joined Bethlehem Baptist Church and later moved his membership to Green Hill Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors are his wife, Carrie Blackwell Brown, of the home; two sons, Tony (LeQuannda) Brown, of Sumter and John D. Brown Jr., of Myrtle Beach; two daughters, Keala Jacobs of Columbia and Crystal Brown of the home; one brother, Stanley Brown, of Portland; four sisters, Irma Hinton of Rocky Mount, N.C., and Marjorie Brown, Patricia Brown and Mary (John)Brown, all of Portland; 7 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; 2 godchildren and a mother-in-law, Henrietta Blackwell.

Remains will be placed in the church at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Green Hill Missionary Baptist Church, 1260 Green Hill Church, Alcolu, with the Rev. J.S. Hudley, pastor, officiating, Minister Delbert Singleton, presiding, with the Rev. James Brown Jr., Minister Christine C. Conyers and Minister David Woods, assisting.

Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home: 1253 Jassamine Way, Manning.

Services have been entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home, LLC, of Manning.

JEWEL E. CUBBAGE

Jewel "Sug" Edens Cubbage, beloved wife of the late Allan Rudolph Cubbage Sr., went home to be with the Lord on March 18, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Cubbage was born on Oct. 12, 1918, in Lynchburg. She was the daughter of Estelle Smith Edens and John Luther Edens Sr. She graduated from the Tuomey School of Nursing in 1939, then worked all her life as a private duty nurse, becoming a lifelong friend with many of her patients. She never retired from her profession, but continued to nurse her family and friends until her recent illnesses. Her greatest accomplishment was raising and educating her five children after her husband died in 1965.

At her recent 90th birthday celebration, Mrs. Cubbage reminded everyone present that even though she was ninety, she "was not old." She was known to all who loved her as "Sug."

Mrs. Cubbage was an active member of the Bethel United Methodist Church-Oswego and a member of the Alice Andrews/Michaux Bible Class. She enjoyed Bible study and reading. She traveled extensively throughout the United State and abroad.

Surviving are: two sons, Al Cubbage Jr. and his wife, Gwen, of Aiken, and Randy Cubbage and his wife, Brenda, of Oswego; three daughters, Stella McCoy and her husband, Billy, of Oswego, Cynthia Owens and her husband, Wayne, of Sumter, and Ellen Neale and her husband, Mike, of Hendersonville, N.C.; one brother, John L. Edens Jr. and his wife, Margaret, of Oswego; one sister, Louise Chapman of Hartsville; twelve grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Join us for a celebration of her life on Saturday at 11:00 am at the Bethel United Methodist. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be: Benny Altman, Bernie Chapman, Henry Goza Jr., Neil McCoy, Sam McCoy and Marvin Skinner.

Honorary pallbearers will be: Joe Bailey, Alvin Burns, David Burns, Donnie Fletcher, Henry Goza Sr., Dreyfus Hutson, Lyde McCaskill, Mac Robinson and Marvin Robinson.

The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bullock Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Bethel United Methodist Church, "Local Mission Fund, " 5575 Loderbar Road, Sumter, SC 29153.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home for the arrangements.

NORWOOD L. DuRANT Jr.

GABLE – Norwood Leonard DuRant Jr., beloved husband, father and "Pappy, " went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 20, 2009.

Born July 29, 1932, in Gable, he was a son of the late Norwood Leonard Sr. and Elma Thomas DuRant. A graduate of Presbyterian College, Norwood served five years in the U.S. Army as an aviator. After his tour of duty, he returned to Gable and farmed in a partnership with his late brother, J. Rutledge DuRant. Norwood was on the board of directors of Farmers Telephone Coop. for more than 20 years, serving as president the last eight years before retiring. He was also on the Farm Credit Board for more than 20 years, a charter member of Gold Kist, Clarendon County Farm Bureau, Farm Service Agency Board and the State Tobacco Committee.

A strong, gentle man, he was devoted to God, his family, and his church. He was an active member of New Harmony Presbyterian Church. Always willing to serve, he was a Sunday school teacher, member of the Men of the Church, Sunday school superintendant, a deacon and an elder emeritus.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Peggy Coskrey DuRant of the home; two sons, Norwood David DuRant (Alice) of Murrells Inlet and Thomas Rutledge DuRant (Jennifer) of Gable; a daughter, Nancy DuRant Clinkscales (Norman) of Sumter; a sister, Norma D. Pollitt of Atlanta; and 12 grandchildren, Jeff Clinkscales (Joanna), Marshall Clinkscales, William Clinkscales, Andrew Clinkscales, Jesse DuRant, Woody DuRant, Ali DuRant, Ross DuRant, Tom DuRant, Josh DuRant, Emily DuRant and Zach DuRant.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in New Harmony Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Bill Barton and the Rev. Dr. Gordon Reed officiating. Burial will follow in New Harmony-DuRant cemetery.

Pallbearers will be grandsons.

Honorary pallbearers will be Olin B. Coskrey, W.D. Cousar, Samuel E. DuRant, Ralph W. Bleasdale, Robert D. McNair, W.H. McNair, Ulysses Hickman, Paul E. Beaufort, Harry Lee McKenzie, Willie James McKenzie, Roy Reinhardt, W.L. Coker, James C. Fletcher and Francis M. Barwick.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning and at other times at the residence, 10301 U.S. Highway 301 N., Alcolu.

Memorials may be made to the Building Fund of New Harmony Presbyterian Church, 1174 New Harmony Church Road, Alcolu, SC 29001.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to Pearl McCullough and Dianne McFadden, and to Beth Craven, Kelly Clark, Carolyn Taylor and Sue Smith of Tri-County Hospice for their faithful compassionate care.
