Ethel Jones 74, died Friday, March 20, 2009, at Riverview Care Center, Baltimore.

Born Sept.10, 1934, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Wash Jones and Sarah Mellerson Jones.

The family is receiving friends at the home of her brother and sister-in-law, James and Evonne Jones, 2626 M.W. Rickenbaker Road, Summerton.

These services have been entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home, LLC of Manning.

HENRY MAGAZINE

Mr. Henry Magazine Sr., 83, died Saturday, March 21, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 10, 1925, in Lee County, son of the late Rev. Henry and Eliza Charles Magazine.

Funeral plans are incomplete and will be announced later by Job's Mortuary.

The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. Josephine Magazine, 1322 Covent Garden Drive.

Job's Mortuary, 312 S. Main St., is in charge of arrangements.

VIRGINIA S. MOOD

Virginia Sandel Mood, 94, widow of Henry Ashleigh Mood, died Saturday, March 21, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Mood was born in Greenville, a daughter of the late Elvin S. and Lula W. Sandel. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Trinity Fellowship Sunday School. She graduated from Greenville High School and attended Furman University. Mrs. Mood retired from the "Green T" Texaco Station, which she and her husband owned and operated on Broad Street and later on Guignard Drive. She was a member and former president of the Sumter Pilot Club and former member of the Poinsett Garden Club.

Survivors are: two sons, Jimmy C. "Bud" Mood of Horatio, and Robert A. "Bobby" Mood and his wife Lynn of Sumter; two brothers, Elvin S. "Bill" Sandel of Greenwood, and Jack A. Sandel and his wife, Pat, of Missouri City, TX; one sister, Evelyn S. "Eb" Boyd of Greenville; two granddaughters, Jennifer Lynn Mood Pillsbury and her husband, John, and Leigh Mood Benenhaley and her husband, Sonny; four great-grandchildren, Ashleigh Alligood, Cole Benenhaley, Tommy Pillsbury, and Travis Pillsbury; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to express their grateful appreciation to Dr. Phil Brandt, the staff of Covenant Place, the third floor surgical staff at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, and the Tuomey Regional Hospice for their loving care of Virginia.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Sumter cemetery with the Rev. Stephen Taylor officiating.

Pallbearers will be Pat Clarke, John Marchant Bull, Henry "Hank" Hodges, Jule Jackson, Melvin Wallace, Bill Rorick, Tommy Laney and Wyman Taylor.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Bullock Funeral Home and other times at the home of Mary Hinson.

Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 226 W. Liberty St., Sumter, SC 29150 or Covenant Place, 2825 Carter Rd., Sumter, SC 29150 or Tuomey Regional Hospice, 115 N. Sumter St., Suite 410, Sumter, SC 29150.

ROBERT LEE EVANS

Robert "Robbie" Lee Evans, 53, died Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in England, he was a son of the late Leon J. and Ivory Cartwright Evans. Mr. Evans was a graduate of Wofford College, where he was a member of the baseball team. He was currently the hitting coach for the Sumter P-15's and was the former sports editor, managing editor and associate editor of The Item.

He was a loving father and brother.

Surviving are a daughter, Kimberly Ann Evans of the home; two brothers, Dean Evans and Glen Evans and wife, Sherran, all of Sumter; a sister, Lyn Mathis and husband, Michael, of Bishopville; nieces and nephews, Amber Evans, Josh Evans, Ashlyn Curtis, Adam Mathis, Christopher Evans, Caycee Evans and Carlee Evans.

Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at Riley Ball Park with the Rev. Ron Bower officiating.

The family will receive friends at the home, 111 Morgan Ave., from 5 to 7 p.m. today.

WILLIAM JOYE Sr.

BISHOPVILLE -- William "Bill" Joye Sr. died Saturday, March 7, 2009, at his home.

Born July 10, 1933, he was a son of the late Sam Joye Sr. and Mae Bell Joye Pearson. He attended the public schools of Lee County. He attended Liberty Hill Missionary Baptist Church. He was married to the late Hattie Mae Joye.

His survivors are seven daughters, Jean Trenice Joye, Angela M. Joye-Ross (George), Barbara Ann Thomas of Thomasville, N.C., Shirley Rubin and Dianna Simon of Bishopville, Ruth Well of Columbia and Cheryl Brevard of Paterson, N.J.; three sons, William Joye Jr., Leroy James and Eric Brevard of Paterson; three stepsons, Charles (Lily) Carter of Sumter, Arthur (Jean) Thomas of Paterson, Earl Carter of Bishopville; a sister, Gloria Ann Joye of Peterson; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Joye of Lamar, Rosa Rainey and Mary Carter of Philadelphia and Creola Simon of Bishopville; two brothers-in-law, Washington Carter of Columbia and Hazel Lee Carter of Washington, D.C.; a host of grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and a host of special friends, the Liberty Hill Church family, Deacon Richard Forman and Deacon Henry Forman of Camden, Solomon McDuffie, Sammie Lee James of Bishopville and James Barrister of Washington Township.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Liberty Hill Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerome Douglas officiating. Burial will be in the McCutchen cemetery.

Square Deal Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

CATHERINE M. WEBB

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Catherine McCray Webb, 67, widow of Richard R. Webb, died Sunday, March 8, 2009, at University of North Carolina Medical Center, Chapel Hill.

Born Jan. 5, 1942, in Alcolu, she was a daughter of the late Ned Hammett and Louise McCray Darley and stepdaughter of the late Willie Darley. She attended Manning Training School and received her certification in child care from Georgetown University. In her youth, she accepted Christ as her Savior and joined Green Hill Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the gospel and mass choirs. She was a foster mother and a childcare giver for many years.

Survivors are a daughter, Densie (Pernell) McLeod of Reidsville, N.C.; two sons, Roosevelt (Katrina) Webb and Anthony Webb, both of Reidsville; adoptive daughter, Shalonda Hayman of Danville, Va.; adoptive son, Jermiah Heyward of Manning; two brothers, Deacon Willie (Queen) Darley of Alcolu and Bobby Darley of Augusta, Ga.; three sisters, Lula Mae Darley and Mary D. Way, both of Manning, and Elouise Darley of Alcolu; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The remains will be placed in the church at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Green Hill Missionary Baptist Church, 1260 Green Hill Church Road, Alcolu, with the Rev.James S. Hudley, pastor, officiating, the Rev. W.J. Frierson, presiding, assisting the Rev. Evangelist Rebecca York and Minister Shawntain Darley. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at the home of her sister, Lula Mae Darley, 38 West End St., Manning.

These services have been entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

CLARENCE L. HUGGINS

ALCOLU -- Clarence Lester Huggins, 88, widower of Bernice Louise Davis Huggins, died Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Cleveland L. and Mary Watts Huggins. Mr. Huggins was a U.S. Army National Guard veteran of World War II, having served 630 days of combat duty. He was a member of Lewis Chapel United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 15, and was a co-founder of Central Electric Co.

Survivors include three sons, Clarence E. "Gene" Huggins, Alfred Huggins (Betty) and James W. Huggins (Linda), all of Alcolu; eight grandchildren, Lesley Kelly (Richard), Le Huggins, Craig Huggins (Kristi), Kevin Huggins, Lisa Tisdale (Alex), Misty Huggins, Tanis Collins (Preston) and Justin Huggins; two step-grandchildren, Skeebo Morris (Rebecca) and Malinda Avins (Spanky); nine great-grandchildren; special nephews, Kenneth Lewis (Carolyn) of Spokane, Wash., and Larry Huggins (Romell) of the Ashwood community; a special niece, Mary Dell Griggs (Ernest) of the Ashwood community; and a special friend, Ed Chappell.

He was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lewis Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Bauknight, the Rev. Jerry Watson and the Rev. Charles Clanton officiating. Burial will be in Brunson cemetery with military honors.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Le Huggins, Craig Huggins, Kevin Huggins and Justin Huggins, and grandsons-in-law, Preston Collins, Richard Kelly and Alex Tisdale.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home of his grandson, 2670 Ike Brunson Road.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Al Jordan, Dr. Wes Jacocks and the loving caregivers of Tuomey Healthcare System's Telemetry Unit and Surgical Inpatient staff.

ANKCROM JENKINS

Ankcrom Jenkins, 86, husband of Marie Ervin Jenkins, was called home to be with His Lord and Savior on Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at Sumter East Health and Rehab Center.

Born Oct. 22, 1922, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Delous and Fairy Oliver Jenkins. He was educated in the public schools of Lee County.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories: a devoted wife of 62 years, Marie Jenkins; five daughters, Beulah (Isaac) Johnson of Dalzell, Delores Spann, Betty Boone and Elouise Helen McGee, all of Sumter, and Evelyn Gass of Paterson, N.J.; two sons, Harmon (Perthina) Jenkins of Bishopville and John Henry Jenkins of the home; a sister, Cora Lee Jenkins of Dalzell; 19 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Ankcrom Jenkins Jr. and James Edward Jenkins; a grandson, Marko L. Richardson; a nephew, Willie A. Jenkins; and a son-in-law, Henry McGee.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Mount Olive AME Church, 2738 Woodrow Road, Woodrow, with the Rev. Timothy A. Johnson Sr., pastor, eulogist.

The family will receive friends at his home 21 James St.

The funeral procession will leave from the home at 11:15 a.m.

Floral bearers will be the Women's Missionary Society.

Pallbearers will be grandsons and friends of the family.

Burial will be in Mount Olive Memorial Garden.

Services directed by the staff and management of Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

FRANCES MOSES COLE

MOUNTAIN BROOK, Ala. -- Frances Moses Cole died peacefully, surrounded by family, on Monday, March 9, 2009, in Mountain Brook.

Mrs. Cole was born on Oct. 11, 1925, in Sumter, a daughter of Eugene and Marion Moses. A graduate of Trinity College in Washington, D.C., she married Sam Cole of Birmingham on Jan. 17, 1948. A tireless community supporter, Mrs. Cole served as a volunteer for St. Vincent's Hospital and the Linley Heflin Unit. She was an active member of the Junior League and a Girl Scout leader. She served St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church (which she attended faithfully for 34 years) in countless ways, including the Altar Sodality. A dear friend to all she knew, she will be remembered for so many positive reasons, including her love of (and talent for) cooking and gardening.

Frances Cole is survived by her children, Holly Cole Goodbody, Ann Cole Elliott, Marion Cole Baab, Martha Cole Hare and Samuel N. Cole Jr.; her brother, Eugene Moses III of Sumter; her 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three nieces and four nephews.

A Funeral Mass was held Thursday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

The family kindly requests that any memorials be made to St. Francis or the Linley Heflin Unit Scholarship Fund.

GEORGE CRIM

George Crim, 62, husband of Tessie Simon Crim, died Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at Kershaw Medical Center, Camden.

Born Jan. 16, 1947, in Sumter County, he was a son of Oliver and Lottie Floyd Crim.

The family will receive friends at the home of his son, Dwayne Crim, 7050 Scales Road.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.
