FAITH PHILLIPS

BISHOPVILLE -- Faith Phillips, newborn daughter of Michael Phillips and Shanda Smith, was born and died on Saturday, March 7, 2009.

Graveside services were held at noon Thursday at St. Mark Baptist Church cemetery.

Square Deal Funeral Home of Bishopville was in charge of arrangements.

JOHN D. FUNK

John David Funk, 54, husband of Michelle Ross, died Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at his home.

Born in Greensboro, N.C., he was a son of Florene Dunn Funk and the late Edward Funk. Mr. Funk was a member of Cross and Crown Lutheran Church in Florence. He was a graduate of Page High School in Greensboro. He was a retired Civil Service contractor at Shaw Air Force Base. He was an artist and woodworker.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; his mother of Chapel Hill, N.C.; a son, Joshua Funk of Florence; a daughter, Jessamyn Funk of Auburn, Calif.; two grandchildren, Oliver Ariolli and Franscesca Ariolli of Auburn; a brother, Ed Funk of Graham, N.C.; five stepchildren, Hether Durant, Jennifer Unger, James, Kathleen and Christina Krivejko; and eight step-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. today in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Patrick W. Poole officiating.

The family will receive friends at the home, 229 Evans Terrace.

Memorials may be made to Sumter County Art Guild, 200 Hasell St., Sumter, SC 29150, or to Tri-County Hospice, 1236-B Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, SC 29150.

ISAAC MILLER

BISHOPVILLE -- Isaac Miller died Monday, March 9, 2009, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center, Hartsville.

He was born Jan. 6, 1949, in Bishopville, to the late Samuel Richard and Essie Miller. Mr. Miller received his formal education through the Lee County public school system. He was a fun-loving and very outgoing person and a very hard worker. He enjoyed fishing, cooking and fixing lawn mowers. He was a great listener and a wonderful person with an overbearing attitude at times. He lived his life to the fullest and will be deeply missed.

Left to cherish his memories are his lovely and devoted wife, Martha Mae Miller of the home; two sons, Jermaine (Jennifer) Miller and Toney (Bessie) Miller, both of Bishopville; four daughters, Monica Wilson, Skemeka Miller, Sandra Nelson and Denise Martin, all of Bishopville; a brother, Sammie Lee Miller Sr. of Bishopville; five sisters, Sarah L. Turner and Janie Marie Miller of Bishopville, Gertrude Miller of Philadelphia, Pa., Irene (William Kelly) McDonald of Paterson, N.J., and Barbara Jean (Jessie) Hyatt of Parsippany, N.J.; two aunts, Martha Lovely and Mary Lee Johnson; three special grandsons, Brandon Rufus, Jamarion Miller of the home and Jermelle Nelson of Bishopville; four sisters-in-law, Betty (Arthur) Benjamin, Alice Spann and Ella Mae Martin, all of Bishopville, and Annie Bell (Len) Weathers of Philadelphia; three brothers-in-law, Johnny (Mary) Johnson of Bishopville and Lucious and Billy Johnson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and many friends.

Funeral services for Isaac Miller will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Liberty Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerome Douglas officiating. Burial will follow in the McCutchen cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 3565 Sumter Highway, Bishopville.

Square Deal Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of the arrangements.

GEORGE O. CRIM

George Oliver Crim, 62, husband of Tessie Simon Crim, departed this life on Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at Kershaw Medical Center, Camden.

Born Jan. 16, 1947, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Oliver and Lottie Floyd Crim. "Spook, " as he was affectionately known, was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was a graduate of Ebenezer High School. George initiated his career by enlisting in the U.S. military, where he served for several years. He was employed by B.F. Goodrich and later became an employee of DuPont, where he worked until his retirement. In addition to working, George had a passion for fishing.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories: his wife, Tessie Simon Crim of Sumter; a son, Dwayne Crim of the home; a granddaughter, Destyni Crim of Dalzell; his mother, Lottie Crim of Bishopville; his mother-in-law, Mary Simon of Ridgeway; three sisters-in-law, Beaulah (Frank) Harris, Peggy (Laron) Gillis and Jeanette Simon, all of Ridgeway; two brothers-in-law, Willie Simon of Elgin and Robert (Marshel) Simon of Winnsboro; an uncle, Richmond Crim of Rembert; an aunt, Lillie Mae Edward of Rembert; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday from Rafting Creek Baptist Church, S.C. Highway 261 North, Rembert, with the Rev. Melvin Mack, pastor, eulogist.

The family will receive friends at the home of his son, Dwayne Crim, 7050 Scales Road.

The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.

The funeral procession will leave from the home of his son at 1:30 p.m.

Floral bearers will be family and friends.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Burial will be in Rafting Creek Baptist Churchyard cemetery, Rembert.

Services directed by the staff and management of Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

RUTH A. HICKS

NORTH CHARLESTON -- Ruth A. Hicks, age 66, widow of Robert Lexton Hicks Sr., of Adams Run, passed away surrounded by her family in the evening hours on Tuesday, March 10, 2009, at her home.

Friends and family of Mrs. Hicks are invited to attend her funeral service at 11 a.m. today at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, 7113 Rivers Ave., North Charleston. Burial will immediately follow at Carolina Memorial Park.

The family of Mrs. Hicks will receive guests at the funeral home at 10 a.m. until the time of service.

Mrs. Ruth A. Capps Hicks was born on Dec. 1, 1942, in Goldsboro, N.C., to the late Patton L. and Hattie L. Wadsworth Capps. She was married to the love of her life, the late Robert L. Hicks Sr., for 20 years, before his death in 1982. She was a seamstress who made modeling gowns and formal wear. She enjoyed country line dancing and doing the two-step and loved to dance at the Lazy B Club on Dorchester Road, North Charleston, before it closed a few years ago. She was a devoted homemaker and wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her two sons, Dale Hicks of New Hope and Robert L. Hicks and his wife, Donna, of Goose Creek; three daughters, Brenda Taylor of Moncks Corner, Amanda McMillian of Atlanta and Tammy Dandridge and her husband, Tony, of Adams Run; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Hicks was preceded in death by her late husband and a brother, the late Robert L. Capps of Ward, Ark.

Flowers will be accepted at the funeral home or memorial contributions can be made to The American Lung Association, 1941 Savage Road, North Charleston, SC 29405.

ANTHONY PLEASANT

Anthony Pleasant, son of the late Tony and Sarah Pleasant and widower of Anna Bell Pleasant, departed this life on Friday, March 13, 2009 at his residence.

Funeral services will be announced by Sumter Funeral Services, Inc.

VALMA J. HOLMES

Valma Jaza Holmes, 55, died Saturday, March 21, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 7, 1953, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of James and Carrie Durant Holmes, and the twin sister of Valarie McCleary.

The family will receive friends at the family home, 230 S.C. 261 South, Apartment 6, Wedgefield.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

LEON STARKS

KINGSTREE -- Leon Starks, 68, husband of Vernell Starks, died March 22, 2009, at McLeod Hospice House, Florence.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 1472 McMillan Road, Greeleyville.

Funeral services are incomplete and will be announced by Henryhand Funeral Home of Kingstree.

CHARLES H. RAGIN

Charles Hue "Shimmy" Ragin departed his earthly journey Sunday, March 22, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, after an illness.

He was born Sept. 28, 1954, in Sumter, a son of the late Charlie J. Ragin and Christina Andrews-Ragin.

The family will receive friends at the home, 718 Warley St.

Arrangements will be announced later by Sumter Funeral Services Inc.

ALMA M. PHILLIPS

Alma Ruby Munn Phillips, 80, widow of Ellie Hugh Phillips Sr., died Sunday, March 22, 2009, at her home.

Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late Raymond George and Estelle Evans Munn. Mrs. Phillips was a faithful member of Wise Drive Church of the Nazarene and a wonderful wife and mother.

Surviving are three daughters, Linda Diane Way and husband, Bubba, Shirley Jean Pack and husband, Benny A., and Susan Elaine Benenhaley and husband, Glenn, all of Sumter; two sons, Ellie Hugh Phillips and wife, Patricia, and Robert Allen Phillips and wife, Barbara, all of Sumter; two sisters, Betty Ann Cook of Sumter and Dora Pluto of Georgetown; a brother, Raymond E. Munn of Georgetown; 10 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Munn and Bennie Munn.

The family would like to say a special word of thanks to Tri-County Hospice for their wonderful care.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Sammy Geddings and the Rev. Bob Morris officiating.

Burial will be in the Trinity United Methodist Church cemetery in Lynchburg.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 1685 Poole Road.

KATHLEEN L. MOORE

Kathleen L. Moore died Saturday morning, March 21, 2009, at Faith Health Center in Florence, after an illness.

She was born March 17, 1925, in Kingstree, Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Luther and Earline Burgess Moore.

The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Cathy Epps Samuel, 48 Brunhill St.

Arrangements will be announced later by Sumter Funeral Service Inc.

NORRIS E. SUTTON II

Norris Edward Sutton II, 49, beloved son of Thelma Grant Sutton and the late Norris Edward Sutton Sr., was born April 16, 1959, in Sumter. He departed this life Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Norris attended and graduated from Sumter High School Class of 1978 and also attended Sumter Area Technical College. He was employed at Sumter and Liberty Seafood Markets; as a chef at the Sheraton Hotel, Columbia; and later as a telecommunicator in Macon, Ga. He was a lover of music and played the piano. He was the first drummer for Mount Pisgah AME Church.

He leaves to cherish precious memories: his mother, Thelma G. Sutton of the home; two daughters, Shontrell M. Sutton and Angela Cummings, both of Sumter; a son, Norris Brown Sutton of Sumter; four grandchildren, Jarshawn Cummings, Demariya Nelson, A'layjah Haynesworth and Brandon Haynesworth, all of Sumter; three aunts, Wilhelmena Ashmond of Staten Island, N.Y., Mattie Williams of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Sarah (Mack) Thompson of Columbus, Ohio; two grandaunts, Thelma Berry and Bertha Logan of Sumter; two nieces; five nephews; grandnieces and nephews; cousins, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Carlos Stephen Sutton and Master Sgt. Endrie' Ricardo Sutton; and an aunt, Lillian Gooden.

Viewing will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Pisgah AME Church with the pastor, the Rev. M. Charmaine Ragin-Whittleton, officiating, assisted by the Rev. E. Robert Thomas, eulogist, the Rev. Harry Clark, the Rev. Larry Clark and the Right Rev. Frederick C. James. Interment will follow in Walker cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Wednesday for viewing until the hour of service.

The family will receive friends at the home, 214 W. Oakland Ave., Sumter, SC 29150.

Job's Mortuary Inc., 312 S. Main St., is in charge of arrangements.
