LILLIAN CLARK

SUMMERTON -- The passing of Lillian Clark, 85, on March 20, 2009, has left her family and friends with a deep sense of loss.

Lillian was born in Rimini, a daughter of the late John Sr. and Delia Drayton. She lived in Philadelphia.

She is survived by five children.

Two children preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday in Philadelphia.

SHEILA ANN RUFFIN

Sheila Ann Ruffin, 50, died Monday, March 23, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

She was born April 14, 1958, in Manhattan, N.Y., a daughter of Minnie Jones Watson Correa and the late Samuel Watson.

The family will receive friends at the home, 10 E. Charlotte Ave.

Funeral plans will be announced later by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

MARK HINES

Mark Hines, 50, departed this earthly life on Saturday, March 21, 2009, at the VA Hospital in Charleston.

He was born Oct. 22, 1958, in Harlem, N.Y., a son of Willie Mae Hines-Miser and the late Jesse Hines. He was a disabled veteran, honorably discharged from the U.S. Army.

He was predeceased by a half-brother James Coats.

Those left to cherish his memory are his mother, Willie Mae Miser of Summerton; two brothers, Sanley (Joe) Green of New York and Anthony (Tony) Hines of Houston, Texas; two half-sisters; Lisa Haskins and Arlita Hines of Woodbridge, Va.; stepmother, Shirley Hines of Alexandria, Va.; five aunts, Emma Furman of Summerton, Mary Jones of Mitchellville, Md., Mary Andrews of Bronx, N.Y., Jeannette Stewart and Deloris Hill of Maryland; three uncles, Johnny Dukes of Sumter, Leon (Bobby) Green of Summerton and Eddie Hines of Maryland; an uncle-in-law, Jimmie Lee Andrews of Bronx, N.Y.; a host of first cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Hines will be held at 2 p.m. today at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. W.T. Johnson, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The remains will be placed in the church one hour prior to the commencing of the services.

The family will receive friends at the home of his mother, 1036 Delaine St., Summerton.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Summerton Funeral Service, 23 S. Duke St., Summerton, (803) 485-3755.

MARION HOWARD Sr.

Marion "Rat" Howard Sr., 67, son of the late Wash Sr. and Alice Lane Howard, was born Sept. 26, 1941, in Sumter. He departed this life on Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at Palmetto Health Richland, Columbia.

He attended Winn Elementary School and graduated from Lincoln High School. Mr. Howard was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church, where he served as finance chairman, member of the United Methodist Men and the transportation ministry. He was honored as "Mr. Mount Zion" for the United Methodist Men. He served his country in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged. His employment included supervisor, Dixie Beverage; radio broadcaster, WWDM; and truck driver for CSX Railroad. He was a member of the American Legion. Mr. Howard was a lover of music and enjoyed entertaining children.

He leaves to cherish his loving memories: a longtime friend, Bertha Felder of Sumter; four children, Virginia Archie of Sumter, Marion Howard Jr. of Fairfax, Tomeka L. Howard of Charlotte, N.C., and Gregory McCray of Sumter; former wife, Dorothy F. Howard of Sumter; three brothers, Wash (Mattie L.) Howard and John (Annette R.) Howard Sr., both of Sumter, and William Howard of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; an aunt, Berthena Spann of Sumter; nieces, nephews, a host of other relatives and friends.

Viewing will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Zion United Methodist Church, 130 Loring Mill Road, Sumter, with the pastor, the Rev. Barbara L. Reid, officiating, assisted by Dr. Thomas J. Bowman Sr., the Rev. Bennie L. Kingwood and the Rev. J.C. Lane. Interment will follow in Lane cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday for viewing until the hour of service.

The family will receive friends at the home of Dorothy F. Howard, 334 Mooneyham Road, Sumter, SC 29154.

ROBERT DUFFIE

Robert Duffie, husband of Dorothy McBride Duffie, of 265 Sandy Run Drive, died Monday, March 23, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

He was a son of the late Lillie Mae Duffie Mack.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by James Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

HASKELL J. EDWARDS

Haskell J. "Skappy" Edwards, 58, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, March 19, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born June 18, 1950, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late James Sr. and Jessie Mae Richardson Edwards. He received his formal education in the public schools of Sumter County. He realized the need to seek Jesus as his Savior, so he joined Mount Olive AME Church at an early age, where he sang in the youth choir. In later years, he attended Joshua Baptist Church. Even though he never joined, he enjoyed the services. He was employed by the City of Sumter for 15 years and Atkin Metal for five years, until his health failed. He was married to Gladys Hill. To this union one son was born.

His memories will be cherished by his wife; his son, Torrey S. (Ambri) Edwards of Sumter; six sisters, Carrie (Eddie) Anderson of Cambria Heights, N.Y., Mamie Wilder, Betty (Sammie) Generette and Gracie A. Prince, all of Sumter, and Ella (Jeremiah) Temoney and Ernestine (Ronald) Jenkins, both of Dalzell; four brothers, Jessie J. Edwards and Roosevelt (Brenda) Edwards, both of Sumter, and Dennis (Amelia) Nickens and Thomas (Veronica) Nickens, both of Dalzell; three sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Joshua Baptist Church, Live Oak Road, Dalzell, with the Rev. Eugene G. Dennis, pastor, the Rev. R.L. Williams, eulogist, assisted by the Rev. Jannette Jenkins, Minister Adeline Albert and the Rev. William Jefferson.

The family will receive friends at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Sammie Generette, 3 Shuler Drive, Sumter.

The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.

The funeral procession will leave from the home of his sister and brother-in-law at 1:20 p.m.

Floral bearers will be nieces and friends of the family.

Pallbearers will be nephews and friends of the family.

Burial will be in the Colclough cemetery, DuBose Siding Road, Sumter.

Services directed by the staff and management of Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

LILA B. SIMMONS

THOMASVILLE -- Lila Mae Brunson Simmons, 84, of 320 Memorial Park Drive, died on Sunday, March 22, 2009, at her home.

Surviving are five sons, John (Eleanor) Simmons, Leroy (Mabel) Simmons, Josh (Maggie) Simmons Jr., Jimmy Lee Simmons and Jacob Isaac Simmons; three daughters, Evon (the Rev. Curtis) Yarborough, Ruth (the Rev. Tyrone) Toland and Lena Darlene (Marcus) Wilson; two brothers, Frank Brunson and Richard Robinson; and two sisters, Elizabeth Freeman and Maggie Brock; 29 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Scott's Branch Middle School in Summerton. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Church of God cemetery in Summerton.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at S.E. Thomas Funeral Service and other times at the home.

All public visitations will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to S.E. Thomas Funeral Service of Thomasville and Community Funeral Home, 343 Manning Ave., Sumter, SC 29150.

MARIE WALKER

BISHOPVILLE -- Marie Walker died Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at Regency Hospital in Florence.

The family will receive friends at 36 Dority Road, Bishopville.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced at a later date by Square Deal Funeral Home of Bishopville.

WILLIAM JOYE Sr.

BISHOPVILLE -- William "Bill" Joye Sr. died Saturday, March 7, 2009, at his home.

Born July 10, 1933, he was a son of the late Sam Joye Sr. and Mae Bell Joye Pearson. He attended the public schools of Lee County. He attended Liberty Hill Missionary Baptist Church. He was married to the late Hattie Mae Joye.

His survivors are seven daughters, Jean Trenice Joye, Angela M. Joye-Ross (George), Barbara Ann Thomas of Thomasville, N.C., Shirley Rubin and Dianna Simon of Bishopville, Ruth Well of Columbia and Cheryl Brevard of Paterson, N.J.; three sons, William Joye Jr., Leroy James and Eric Brevard of Paterson; three stepsons, Charles (Lily) Carter of Sumter, Arthur (Jean) Thomas of Paterson, Earl Carter of Bishopville; a sister, Gloria Ann Joye of Peterson; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Joye of Lamar, Rosa Rainey and Mary Carter of Philadelphia and Creola Simon of Bishopville; two brothers-in-law, Washington Carter of Columbia and Hazel Lee Carter of Washington, D.C.; a host of grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and a host of special friends, the Liberty Hill Church family, Deacon Richard Forman and Deacon Henry Forman of Camden, Solomon McDuffie, Sammie Lee James of Bishopville and James Barrister of Washington Township.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Liberty Hill Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerome Douglas officiating. Burial will be in the McCutchen cemetery.

Square Deal Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

HORACE THOMPSON

Horace Thompson, husband of Geneva Weathers Thompson, died Monday, March 9, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter County, he was the oldest of six children born to the late Belton T. Dinkins and Christine Patterson. He was reared by the late Louise H. Thompson. At an early age, he joined High Hills AME Church, where he served in many capacities including trustee, later becoming a trustee emeritus; pastor's aide; and member of the Sons of Allen. He was employed as a public service agent and was a heavy-duty equipment operator until his retirement in 1993.

Surviving are his wife, Geneva Weathers Thompson of the home; daughter, Santana M. Anderson, also of the home; son, Jamel Nations of Baltimore; four sisters, Mazieola Barney and Claudett Wellington of Washington, D.C., Doretha Wiley of Baltimore and Christine Nixon of Chester, Pa.; five brothers, Leroy (Deborah) Nixon of Camden, Richard (Nadine) Nixon, Howard (Linda) Patterson and Laval Patterson, both of Chester, Pa., and Leon (Lynn) Patterson of Baltimore; two special sisters, Margaret Thompson (Marion) and Elizabeth (Edward) Brooks of Rembert; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at High Hills AME Church with the pastor, the Rev. Thomas H. Habersham, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Ruth Robinson-Wiley presiding, the Rev. Linda Richbow, the Rev. Charlie Howard and the Rev. Willie Dennis. Interment will follow in High Hills AME Church cemetery.

Mr. Thompson will be placed in the church for viewing at noon until the hour of service.

The public may view Mr. Thompson at the Palmer Memorial Chapel after 1 p.m. this afternoon.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel and other times at 7250 Coon Ridge Road in Rembert.

The funeral procession will depart from the family residence at 12:30 p.m. Friday.

Palmer Memorial Chapel of Sumter is in charge of funeral arrangements.

MARGARET B. JACKSON

MANNING -- Margaret Eva Bell Jackson, 59, wife of Jarrott Jackson Sr., died Thursday, March 12, 2009, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born June 26, 1949, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Pinkney and Edna Holiday Oliver.

The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Sharon Jackson, 37 Parson St., Summerton.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Summerton Funeral Service.
