As we are saying farewell and losing sight, there are those on the distant shore shouting in jubilee, “Here she comes,” as they rejoice together at her coming home.
The world as we know it will be a less interesting place, the sun will be missing one of its brightest rays as we face this day the loss of our dear friend and loved one, Lydie Clary Bergen.
Lydie Clary Bergen, 85, of 2221 Wells Park Drive, Newberry, wife of Earl H. Bergen, Jr., died Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at Springfield Place in Newberry.
Mrs. Bergen was born on November 5, 1922 in Newberry a daughter of the late Johnson Hagood and Mamie Strother Clary, Sr.
She was a 1943 graduate of Newberry College and taught school in Ridgeland and John’s Island. She started Bergen’s Ladies Shop and retired after 25 years with the business. At the time of her retirement, it was the largest retail clothing store in Newberry. She was a member of First Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband of Newberry; two daughters and sons in law, Jeannette and Sandy Kirkland of Winston, GA and Linda and Tommy Herndon of Prosperity; a son and daughter in law, Earl and Catherine Bergen, III of Guyton, GA; two sisters, Helen Epting of Columbia and Cornelia Burr of Gaithersburg, MD; seven grandchildren, Thomas C. Herndon, Alex Kirkland, Mark Herndon, Clay Herndon, Arthur Kirkland, Nicole Bergen and Morgan Bergen; three great grandchildren, Zachery Herndon, Brennan Herndon and Alexander Blane Kirkland. She was predeceased by sisters, Pauline Clary and Allie Lou Hulsebus and brothers, Johnson H. Clary, Bennett Clary, Roy Clary and Charles Clary.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 P.M. Friday at First Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Harmon. Interment was in Rosemont Cemetery.
Visitation was Thursday from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry.
Casket bearers were the grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Sara Clark, Joan Hutchinsin, Sharon Brantley, Chuck Byrd, C. J. Garner, Dot Gladney, Jackie Hawkins, Evelyn Lake, Barbara Morris, Mauren O’Shields, Fairy Ouzts, Eddie Porter, Bobbie Joyce Smith, Shirley Williams and Pat Wise.

P. Derrill Matthews, 74, of 2539 Belfast Road, Newberry, died Saturday, March 15, 2008 at his residence.
Mr. Matthews was born on March 11, 1934 in Newberry, a son of the late L. J. “Jack” and Edith McCarty Matthews. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, served in the S.C. National Guard for 20 years, and was the retired owner of Matthews, Inc. He was a member of Epting Memorial United Methodist Church, the Newberry Moose Lodge and was a former member of the Newbery Country Club and the Mid-Carolina Country Club.
He is survived by his wife, Margie Jones Matthews of Newberry; four daughters and sons-in-law, Debra Matthews and Bobby DeHart, Susan M. and Rick Waites, Paula M. and Ronnie Riddle, and LeAnn M. and Lee Nicholson all of Newberry; a sister and brother-in-law, Loretta and Houseal “Doc” Richardson of Newberry; seven grandchildren, Brittany Price, Susannah Price, Houston Waites, Daniel Nicholson, Maggie Riddle, Matthew Nicholson, Libby (Shane) Wessinger; one great grandson, Chase Wessinger; and four nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Ronald Matthews and his Step-Mother, Lillie K. Matthews.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 AM Tuesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. David Inman. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
The family was at the residence and did receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 PM Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Newberry County Memorial Hospital Foundation, PO Box 497, Newberry, SC 29108.
Active pallbearers were Rick Waites, Bobby Dehart, Ronnie Riddle, Lee Nicholson, Houston Waites, Daniel Nicholson and Matthew Nicholson.

Marian Zigmund Tobolski
March 7, 2008

Marian Zigmund Tobolski, 80, of 25 Garrington Court, Chapin, died Friday, March 07, 2008 at the Lexington Medical Center.
He was born on May 27, 1927 in Wiecbork, Poland, a son of the late Franciszek Tobolski and Wanda Rod Wieczorowska Tobolski. A survivor of the Holocaust, he immigrated to the United States from Belgium in 1956 with his family. He was a retired employee of Fafnir Bearing Company and was a member of Our Lady of the Lady Catholic Church.
Mr. Tobolski is survived by his wife, Helena Korpak Tobolski of Chapin; a daughter, Rose Azarigian of Prosperity; a son, John Tobolski of Morrisville, NC; seven grandchildren, Michelle, Holly, Dawn, Kevin, Kristen, Sharon, and Laura; and 6 great grandchildren: Kayla, Zachary, Ava, Haley, Michael & Nathan.
A memorial service was held at 10:00 AM Monday March 10, 2008 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church by Father Andrew Vollkommer.
Memorials may be sent to the American Lung Association of S.C, 1817 Gadsden St., Columbia, SC 29201.

Mary Waties Lumpkin Pope
March 4, 2008

Mary Waties Lumpkin Pope, wife of the late Thomas Harrington Pope, Jr. of Newberry, died Tuesday, March 4, 2008. She was born December 6, 1917 in Columbia, the daughter of the late Alva Moore Lumpkin and Mary Sumter Thomas Lumpkin. She was a graduate of Mary Baldwin College. Upon her marriage, January 3, 1940, she moved to Newberry. Services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Newberry, with interment immediately following in Rosemont Cemetery in Newberry. Visitation was from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Harrington Pope, III, 1228 Walnut St., Newberry.
Mrs. Pope was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and served on the Altar Guild. She was a member of The Assembly, the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America and the Junior League of Columbia. She had formerly been an active member of the Palmetto Garden Club, the Pine Tree Hunt Club, the Huguenot Society of S.C., the South Caroliniana Society, the South Carolina Historical Society, and the Governor’s Mansion Foundation.
She is survived by her children: Mary Waties Pope Kennedy and husband, Robert Hunter Kennedy, Jr., of Columbia; Thomas Harrington Pope III and wife, Adele Jeffords Pope, of Newberry; Gary Tusten Pope and wife, Margaret Christian Pope, of Columbia.
She is also survived by her nine grandchildren: Robert Hunter Kennedy III and wife, Margaret Brett Kennedy, Thomas Harrington Pope Kennedy and wife, Ashley Bell Kennedy, Mary Sumter Waties Kennedy Allen and husband, Charles Robertson Allen II, William Harrington Pope and wife, Erin McCormick Pope, Jane Brooks Marshall Pope, Helen Harrington Pope, Gary Tusten Pope, Jr., Elizabeth Christian Pope and Ann Stelling Pope. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren: Sampson Pope Kennedy and Charles Robertson Allen III, and by her sister-in-law, Mrs. Alva Moore (Willodene Rion) Lumpkin, Jr.
She was pre-deceased by her brother, Alva Moore Lumpkin, Jr. and sister, Caroline Lumpkin.
The family expresses its thanks particularly to caregivers Mildred Wise, Mary Harmon and Shirley Robinson, to Dr. Oscar Lovelace and his staff, and to the staff at Springfield Place.

John W. “Johnny” Wise
March 3, 2008

John W. “Johnny” Wise, 70, of 25743 US Highway 76, Newberry, died Monday, March 3, 2008 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Wise was born on September 21, 1937 in Newberry County, a son of the late Henry Walter and Gladys Shealy Wise. He was a retired co-owner of Wise’s Bar-B-Que House and a member of St. James Lutheran Church, the Joanna Lions Club, and the Newberry County Cattleman’s Association.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Nicholson Wise of Newberry; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Beth Wise of Newberry and Roger and Adrian Wise of Lugoff; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Narvis and Robert Harmon of Newberry, Mary Ellen and Harold Prater of West Columbia, and Nancy and Rick Richardson of Prosperity; and two grandchildren, Kaleb Wise and Kendal Wise. He was predeceased by two brothers, Clay S. Wise and James E. “Jimmy” Wise.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 PM Wednesday at St. James Lutheran Church by the Rev. Rodney Gunter. Interment was in the church cemetery.
The family were at the residence and did receive friends from 5:30 to 8:00 PM Tuesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to St. James Lutheran Church, 228 Jalapa Road, Newberry SC 29108.
Active pallbearers were Wayne Upchurch, Mark Wise, Don Richardson, Michael Wise, Roger Smith, and Billy Harmon.

David A. Hlasney
April 30, 2008

David A. Hlasney, 59, of 2125 Rosalyn Drive, Newberry died Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at the Lexington Medical Center.
He was born on October 5, 1948 in Manhattan, NY a son of the late Joseph and Lila Peer Hlasney. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and was employed with Subway Restaurant of Newberry.
Mr. Hlasney is survived by his wife, Joyce Ann Hlasney of Newberry; his daughters and son-in-law, Michelle Ann and James Dycus of Whitmire and Carrie Lynn Moore of Newberry; a sister, Vickie Malone of Wichita Falls, TX; three brothers Thomas Hlasney of Newberry, Jack Corliss of Chicago and Steven Corliss of Arkansas; and 10 grandchildren, Jamie Dycus, Austin Dycus, Christopher Robertson, Brandon Dycus, Kristine Dycus, Jonathan Coffey, Jacob Coffey, Christian Moore, Thomas Joseph Moore and Kaitlyn Nicole Moore. Predeceased by Timothy Corliss.
Private family service were held at a later date.

Cynthia Mower Martin
Thursday, April 17, 2008

Cynthia Mower Martin, 89, of 1531 Main St., Newberry, died Thursday, April 17, 2008 at the WJB Dorn Medical Center in Columbia.
Miss Martin was born on August 6, 1918 in Newberry, a daughter of the late Foster N. and Mary Helen Mower Martin. She served three years during WWII in the Women’s Army Corps. She was a graduate of Newberry College and a member of the Newberry ARP Church which she joined when she was 6 years old.
She worked at Nichols Studio for 46 years during which time she compiled two books of old photographs of Newberry “As It Was.” After retiring, she had a small ceramic business making hand sculptured figurines.
Miss Martin is the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Mrs. James B. (Jane) Martin of Charleston, nieces and nephews. Graveside funeral services were conducted at 11:00 am Saturday, April 19, 2008 by the Rev. Gary Pierstorff in Rosemont Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Newberry ARP Church., Upgrade and Restoration Fund, 1701 Main St., Newberry, SC 29108.

Margaret Murrah Sheppard

Margaret Murrah Sheppard, 78, of 2106 Mower St., Newberry, widow of William L. “Bill” Sheppard, died Sunday, April 13, 2008 at her residence.
She was born on December 10, 1929 in Joanna, a daughter of the late Harmon G. and Cleo Rodgers Murrah. She was a former employee of Damon International and was a member of Faith Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Sheppard is survived by a daughter, Brenda Sheppard Lee of N. Charleston; a son, William Lory Sheppard, Jr. of Newberry; a sister, Alma Gregory of Columbia; a brother, H. G. “Buck” Murrah, Jr. of Joanna; 5 grandchildren, Aleatha Sheppard Day, Sherry Angel Lee, April Michelle Lee, Rickey O’Neal Lee, Jr. and Dawn Marie Lee; and 4 great grandchildren, Austan Jack Day, Alexys Lory Day, Andrew William Day, and Ruby Sheppard Reddington. She was predeceased by a dear friend, Mrs. Reba Brooks.
Funeral services were conducted at 4:00 P.M. Wednesday at Whitaker Funeral Home by Rev. Rodney Gunter. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
The family was at her residence and did receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 332 North Lauderdale, Memphis, TN 38105 or to Hospice Care of Tri County, 166 Stonebridge Dr., Suite 100, Columbia, SC 29210-8239.
