MARION M. BARKLEY

MONROE, La. -- A celebration of the life of Marion M. Barkley, 70, of Monroe, formerly of Sumter, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Louisiana War Veteran's Home with Pastor Mike Back officiating.

Mr. Barkley retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Sudie Barkley; and brother, William Barkley.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Arlette Barkley; children, Mike Barkley of Monroe, David Barkley and wife, Sandy, of Shreveport, La., Annette and husband, C.C. Flanagan, of Monroe; three granddaughters, Kendra, Lauren and Andria; a grandson, Joshua; two great-grandchildren, Christopher Lee and Jessa Lynn Renee; two brothers, Archie and James Barkley; and sister, Margaret Launius.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Veteran's Home, the 5th floor nursing staff at St. Francis North, Hospice Care of Louisiana, and a special thank you to J. Dean Stockstill, M.D. for their compassionate care.

Mulhearn Funeral Home of Monroe is in charge of arrangements.

MATTHEW J. WILKIE Sr.

Matthew Jay Wilkie Sr., 49, died Monday, March 23, 2009, at his home.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of Joe T. Sr. and Betty Galloway Wilkie. Mr. Wilkie was a member of Sumter Baptist Temple. He was employed by Thompson Industrial and coached baseball for the Sumter County Parks and Recreation Department. He was a wonderful and loving father and son.

Survivors include his parents of Sumter; three children, Matthew Jay Wilkie Jr., Ariel Lynette "Little Girl" Wilkie and Phillip Joseph Wilkie, all of Sumter; two brothers, Tommy Wilkie (Dianna) of the Charleston area and Paul Allen Wilkie (Amy) of Sumter; his girlfriend, Beth Smith of Sumter; and nieces and nephews, Jennifer Wilkie, Stephanie Wilkie, Tripp Wilkie, Kerrie Wilkie, Abby Wilkie, Courtney Wilkie, Jeremy Buckner, Ferris Buckner, Amanda Stewart and Adam Stewart.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Sumter Baptist Temple with the Rev. Eddie Richardson officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in Summerton.

Pallbearers will be Felder Poplin, Richard "Bobo" Moore, Dean Pack, Glenn Nesbitt, Rusty McGee, Patrick Buckner, Robert Stewart and Josey Copeland.

Honorary pallbearers will be Roy Hudson Jr., Patricia Buddin, Tony Buddin, Drey Brunson, Jeffrey Floyd, Johnny McLeod and Frankie Frye.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home of his parents.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 950 48th Ave. North, Suite 101, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577; the American Heart Association, 520 Gervais St., Columbia, SC 29201; or to Sumter Baptist Temple, 2295 Harper St., Sumter, SC 29153.

LINDA R. GRIFFIN

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. -- Linda "Lynn" Richards Griffin, wife of N. Cullen Griffin, died Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst, N.C.

Services will be announced by Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter.

KATHLEEN MOORE

Kathleen Moore completed her earthly journey on Saturday, March 21, 2009, at Palmetto Faith Healthcare Center in Florence.

Born March 17, 1925, in Kingstree, she was a daughter of the late Luther and Earline Burgess Moore and the late Sampson McCray. Mrs. Moore was educated in Williamsburg County. She was formerly married to Robert McKenzie. She was a member of Mercy and Kindness Church in New Zion. "Miss Kitty" was well-known and loved by many.

Mrs. Moore is survived by a son, Johnny Lee McKenzie of Sumter; a stepdaughter, Laura B. McKenzie of Sumter; five daughters, Eliza (James) Durant, Cathy (Joseph) Samuel, Ethelena (John) Sinkler, Dorothy McKenzie (Jeff) and Cynthia McKenzie (Randy), all of Sumter; seven grandchildren, Marilyn Moore, Marcus Moore, Christopher McKenzie, Justin Epps, Marlena Robinson, Tania Samuel and Shania Kathleen Garner; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Joseph McCray (Mattie) of Sumter and Willie A. McCray (Elouise) of Newport News, Va.; five sisters, Eliza Epps of New Haven, Conn., Lauretha (Benjamin) Anderson of Lynchburg, Sarah Holloman, Ossie E. Kidds and Mary Lucille (James) Chandler, all of Philadelphia, Pa.; three sisters-in-law, Lillian, Elizabeth and Dorothy McCray; a brother-in-law, Moses Wright; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Moore was preceded in death by her siblings, Elouise Harmon, Robertha Weeks, Pearl Wilson, Buleah Wright, John Moore, Albert, James H., David, John Lee, Sam, Isaiah and James McCray and John Edward Moore.

Funeral services will be held at noon Friday in the chapel of Sumter Funeral Service Inc. with Bishop Lucious Wheeler in charge of the eulogy, assisted by the Rev. Devon Wright, Missionary Bernard Webb, Sister Claretha Sinkler, Minister Carrie McFadden and Evangelist Shirley Wheeler. Interment will follow in Bradford cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Cathy Epps Samuel, 48 Brunhill St., and the processional will leave the home at 11:15 a.m.

Viewing will be held from 1:30 to 7 p.m. today.

Sumter Funeral Service Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

VALMA HOLMES

Valma "Jaza" Holmes, 55, departed this earthly life on Saturday, March 21, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 7, 1953, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late James "Big Daddy" Sr. and Carrie "Peach" Durant Holmes. "Jaza" attended Sumter County public schools and was a 1971 graduate of Edmunds High School. Upon graduating high school, she moved to New York, where she attended The Fashion Institute of Technology. Jaza worked in the hotel industry until her return to Sumter. She lived the remainder of her life cultivating and perfecting her passion as a loc stylist in the Sumter-Wedgefield area.

Jaza leaves to celebrate her life: three sisters, Brenda J. Holmes of Myrtle Beach, twin sister, Valarie McCleary of Columbia and Janie E. Sanders (Steven) of Sumter; a brother, Ralph "Chuck" Holmes (Gwen) of Sumter; two nieces, Chris Malika Holmes of Atlanta and Nakai R. McCleary of Durham, N.C.; two grandnieces, JaCarri T. Mack and Keniya A. McCleary of Durham; four nephews, Arkie A. McCleary of Durham, Clayton H. Temoney, R.C. and K.C. Holmes, all of Sumter; a grandnephew, De'Andrae J. Temoney of Sumter; and a host of dear cousins and friends.

There are many more who referred to her as "Auntie Jaza" or "Momma Jaza."

Above being well read and well traveled, she was indeed well loved.

She was preceded in death by her eldest brother, James "Sonny" Holmes Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday from the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel, Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., Sumter, with Dr. Thomas J. Bowman, eulogist, Dr. Timmothy J. Bowman, presiding, assisted by the Rev. Irene Anthony, Minister Loretta Brunson, Minister Janie Sanders and the Rev. Julia Sanders.

The family will receive friends at the family home, 230 S.C. Highway 261 South, Apartment 6, Wedgefield.

The procession will leave from the family home at 12:20 p.m.

Floral bearers and pallbearers will be Edmunds High School Class of 1971.

Burial will be in the Davis cemetery, Bishopville.

Services directed by the staff and management of Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

KOREI J. BULL

DARLINGTON -- Korei Jimmy Bull, 34, of 1438 S. Center Road, died Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at an area hospital.

The family is receiving friends at the home of his mother, 301 Slingshot Drive, Darlington.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Boatwright's Chapel on Main of Darlington.

BOBBY J. WITHERSPOON

Bobby James Witherspoon, 54, died Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 31, 1953, in Olanta, son of the late John and Annie Jane Witherspoon.

He leaves to cherish his memories: three sons; two daughters; seven sisters, Louise Burgess, Janie (Franklin) Green, Martha Witherspoon and Betty Epps, all of Sumter, Dorothy (Glenn) Ross of North Carolina, Mary (Wallace) Barnes of Lynchburg and Alberta Powell of Lake City; three brothers, Willie Witherspoon of Sumter, John (Linnie Ann) Witherspoon of Olanta and Robert Witherspoon of Lake City; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral plans are incomplete.

The family will receive friends at the home of his brother and sister-in-law, John and Linnie Ann Witherspoon, 536 Karl Floyd Road, Olanta.

MARK KINES

Mark Hines, 50, departed this earthly life on Saturday, March 21, 2009, at the VA Hospital in Charleston.

He was born Oct. 22, 1958, in Harlem, N.Y., a son of Willie Mae Hines-Miser and the late Jesse Hines. He was a disabled veteran, honorably discharged from the U.S. Army.

He was predeceased by a half-brother James Coats.

Those left to cherish his memory are his mother, Willie Mae Miser of Summerton; two brothers, Sanley (Joe) Green of New York and Anthony (Tony) Hines of Houston, Texas; two half-sisters; Lisa Haskins and Arlita Hines of Woodbridge, Va.; stepmother, Shirley Hines of Alexandria, Va.; five aunts, Emma Furman of Summerton, Mary Jones of Mitchellville, Md., Mary Andrews of Bronx, N.Y., Jeannette Stewart and Deloris Hill of Maryland; three uncles, Johnny Dukes of Sumter, Leon (Bobby) Green of Summerton and Eddie Hines of Maryland; an uncle-in-law, Jimmie Lee Andrews of Bronx, N.Y.; a host of first cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Hines will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. W.T. Johnson, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The remains will be placed in the church one hour prior to the commencing of the services.

The family will receive friends at the home of his mother, 1036 Delaine St., Summerton.

LOLA K. McCOY

BISHOPVILLE -- Lola Kelly McCoy, 79, widow of Leland McCoy, died March 25, 2009, at McCoy Nursing Center.

Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Ashby Melton Kelley and Mamie Holland Kelley. Mrs. McCoy was a member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Robin Marie McCoy and Kelly McCoy; a brother, Pat Kelley (Mary Lou) of Orangeburg; a sister, Leconia Baker of Bishopville; three grandchildren, Edward Cobet Parnell III (Rhonda Parnell), Anna Maria Parnell and Jamie Lynn Parnell, DVM; four great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Riggins, Taylor Riggins, Edward Cobet Parnell IV and James Parnell; and several special nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Rickey Howell officiating. Burial will be in St. Matthew United Methodist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of the arrangements.

SHEILA ANN RUFFIN

Sheila Ann Ruffin, 50, died Monday, March 23, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

She was born April 14, 1958, in Manhattan, N.Y., a daughter of Minnie Watson Correa and the late Samuel Watson. She was educated in the public schools in New York and enrolled in a Man Power computer training program, after which she received her first job at Citi Bank in New York. Later, she was employed by John Weily, where she worked for 10 years and also worked in the Treasury Department at New York University for nine years, until she became disabled. In May of 2007, she relocated to Sumter. Sheila was always a loving, caring and giving person who will be missed by her family, friends and co-workers as the "advice giver."

She leaves to cherish loving memories: a son, Lamont Watson; daughter, Tara Anderson; mother, Minnie Correa; brothers, Reginald Watson and Anthony (Pam) Watson; sisters, Vanessa Watson and Dason Watson; aunts, Ruby Singleton of Sumter, Azalee Watson of Charleston, Rebecca Watson of New York City and Lilla Mae (Vincent) Barney of Florida; uncles, Elder Timothy Jones, Jerry Watson and McKinnley Watson of Charleston; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, including Gregory Hill.

Viewing will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church with the pastor, the Rev. Larry W. Barnes, presiding, assisted by Bishop Mitchell Hudson, eulogist, Minister Josephine Woodard, Minister Angela Edwards and Evangelist Katie Hudson. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park.

The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Saturday for viewing until the hour of service.

The family will receive friends at the home, 10 E. Charlotte Ave., Sumter, SC 29150.
