OSIRIS KAFU

Osiris Sahure Nefer Kafu born Gregory Alonzo Wright, 52, departed this earthly life on Monday, March 23, 2009, at his home.

Born July 8, 1956 in Norfolk, Va., he was a son of Flossie Wright-Littles and the grandson of the late Albert and Marie Canty Wright. Kafu attended the public schools of Sumter County and was a graduate of Sumter High School Class of 1974. He attended Devry Institute of Technology and Tuskegee Institute, receiving a degree in engineering and mathematics. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a U.S. Air Force officer, where he served in various leadership positions. He was employed at CIT-Alcatel, where he planned and coordinated development and integration tests in hardware, software and firmware of a class-5 digital switch for a French manufacturer. He later became a senior engineer for MCI Telecommunications, where he planned and managed many switch networks. He continued his education at USC-Spartanburg and South Carolina State University, where he was completing his graduate studies. He established People for Education -- working with at risk youths. He was also the owner/publisher of KRC Press.

Loving memories will be cherished by: his mother, Flossie Wright Littles of the home; a daughter, Isis Marie Pearson of Sumter; two brothers, Donovan (Mae Ruth) Wright and Exabrial (Kimberly) Brooks of Columbia; two sisters, Wanda (Ernest) Green and Trena (William) Harper of Sumter; three uncles, Leon Wright of Sumter, Raymond Wright of Newark, N.J., and John Session of Brooklyn, N.Y.; nephews, Auntrez Pinkney, Demond and Shavon Wright; and nieces, Shaneequah Pinkney, Ireona and London Brooks, all of Columbia; a special cousin, Tamara Wright of Sumter; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 421 S. Main St., Sumter, with the Rev. Joyce Chiles, pastor, the Rev. Dr. Ernest Jackson, pastor of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church (USA), eulogist, assisted by the Rev. Harry Clark.

The family will receive friends at the family home, 51 James Village Apartment, Sumter.

The remains will be placed in the church at 10 a.m.

The procession will leave from the family home at 10:30 a.m.

Floral bearers and pallbearers will be family and friends.

Burial will be in Walker cemetery, Sumter.

Services directed by the staff and management of Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

MARIE WALKER

BISHOPVILLE -- Funeral services for Marie Walker, wife of Horace Walker, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 60 Bethune Highway, Bishopville. Burial will follow in Boone cemetery.

Square Deal Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

ROBERT L. DUFFIE

Robert Lee "Shorty" Duffie, 61, entered into eternal rest on Monday, March 23, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 17, 1948, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Lillie Mae Mack. He received his formal education in the public schools of Sumter County.

His memories will be cherished by a special friend, Dorothy McBride of the home; five loving sisters, Rebecca (Joseph) Holliday, Magdaline Mack and Virginia Mack, all of Sumter, Maxine (Charles) Smith of Tampa, Fla., and Marie (Mark) Geter of Greenville; three brothers, Jessie James (Lana) Mack of North Augusta, Sgt. Willie James (Sharon) Mack of Fort Bragg, N.C., and Roosevelt (Theresa) Mack of Sumter; two aunts, Hattie Duffie of Wedgefield and Loretta Simmons of Sumter; a grandaunt, Janie Kelly of Wedgefield; two uncles, Joe Simmons and Roosevelt (Dell) Simmons of Wedgefield; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother; a brother, Sam Bracey; and his grandmother, Rebecca Duffie Bracey.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at James Funeral Home, 8 S. Purdy St., Sumter, with Minister Dameon C. Duffie officiating and eulogist.

The family is receiving friends at the home of Dorothy McBride, 265 Sandy Run Drive, Sumter.

The funeral procession will leave from the home at 2:30 p.m.

Services directed by the staff and management of James Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

EARNESE W. BOLDEN

Earnese Williams Bolden, 79, widow of the Rev. Elijah Bolden Sr., and daughter of the late James and Bessie Rickenbacker Williams, departed this life on Sunday, March 22, 2009, at her home.

She was born Oct. 7, 1929, in Bamberg, but grew up in Bishopville, where she attended the public schools. She later graduated from Sumter High Adult Education. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior and joined the Liberty Hill Baptist Church, Bishopville. She was united in holy matrimony to the late Rev. Elijah Bolden Sr. From this union seven children were born.

She later joined Hopewell Baptist Church, where she sang with the gospel choir and served on the Missionary Society. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Stars, Catchall Chapter No. 315, and a former worthy matron. She accompanied her husband in the ministry at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Sumter, where she served faithfully as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, on the Ever Increasing Prayer Band, and whatever else her hands found to do. She was employed at Campbell Soup Co., Sumter, until her retirement in 1991.

She leaves to cherish fond memories: two daughters, Cassandra M. Bolden of Varnville and Belinda Perry of Lake Butler, Fla.; four sons, James T. Bolden and David (Betty) Bolden of Dalzell, Earnest A. Bolden of Gretna, Va., and Lynard (Ileana) Bolden of Miami, Fla.; four grandchildren raised as children, Alphonso Bolden of San Diego, Calif., Larry (Cynthia) Bolden of Sumter, Pamela B. Corey of Alexandria, Va., and Elizabeth (Alex) Coleman of Baltimore; four stepdaughters, Geneva Russ of Rembert, Lillie Mae (Advil) Shannon and Christine (Raymond) Regusters of Baltimore and Eva Montgomery of Dorchester, Mass.; two brothers, Hosea Williams of Washington, D.C., and Alphonso Williams of Harrisburg, Pa.; three sisters-in-law, Angeline Loney of Dalzell, Christine Colclough of Dusquesne, Pa., and Carrie Johnson of Philadelphia; godson, Isaac McCoy; goddaughter, Julia Campbell; two daughters-in-law; 50 grandchildren; 72 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; loving and devoted friends, Broadus Fulks, Wrenoski Williams, Catherine and Thomas Council; a host of nieces, nephews, other close relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by two children, Lucille Sanders and Elijah Bolden Jr.; and a grandson, A.J. Bolden.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday from Hopewell Baptist Church, S.C. 441, Dalzell, with the Rev. Richard Addison, pastor, eulogist, the Rev. L.W. Walker Sr., pastor emeritus, the Rev. Edward L. Sanders, presiding, assisted by the Rev. Lewis W. Walker Jr. and the Rev. Derrick Grant.

The family will receive friends at the family home, 3705 Bolden Lane, Dalzell.

A wake service will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel, Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., Sumter.

The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.

The funeral procession will leave from the family home at 1:20 p.m.

Floral bearers will be ministers' wives and Eastern Stars No. 315.

Honorary floral bearers will be daughters and granddaughters.

Pallbearers will be grandsons.

Honorary pallbearers will be ministers and sons.

Burial will be in the Hillside Memorial Park, Sumter.

Services directed by the staff and management of Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

HARRY EDWARDS

LYNCHBURG -- Funeral services for Harry Edwards will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mount Pleasant Middle School, Elliott, with the Rev. Frederick Martin, pastor of Green Bay Missionary Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Sanders cemetery.

Mr. Edwards, 64, was born July 9, 1944, in Lee County, to Christopher C. Edwards and the late Edith Clavon Edwards. He died March 24, 2009, at his residence.

He was a graduate of Mount Pleasant High School. After graduation, he relocated to New York and was employed as a motor vehicle operator for the U.S. Postal Service. After his retirement, he moved back to Lynchburg. Mr. Edwards was a faithful and supportive member of Green Bay Missionary Baptist Church.

In addition to his father, he is survived by his beloved and devoted wife, Rebecca Edwards; his loving and faithful children, Yolanda Edwards Frazier, Carl Edwards (Shelia) and Gary Carter (Annie); a brother, John Ray Edwards; five sisters, Christine Scarborough (Levi), Carolyn Walker, Betty Henry (Hosea), Blanche McDonald (DeLane) and Virginia Goodman (Gainsburg); five grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Martin Durant (Mable); two sisters-in-law, Maggie Joe and Betty Dabney; many other relatives and friends.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 1045 Back Swamp Road, South Lynchburg.

Jefferson Funeral Home, 130 McIntosh St., Lynchburg, is in charge of arrangements.

LINDA JEAN R. GRIFFIN

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. -- Linda Jean Richards Griffin, 71, of Rockingham, died Tuesday, March 24, 2009, after a long illness.

She was born April 16, 1937, in Dalton, Mass., a daughter of Doris Abare Richards and the late Lawrence Edward Richards.

She was preceded in death by her son, David Cullen Griffin.

Surviving are her husband, Newell Cullen Griffin Jr. of the home and formerly of Pinewood; a daughter, Sheryl Griffin Loehr and her husband, Tom Loehr, of Rockingham; her mother, Doris A. Richards of Rockingham; a brother, David Richards and his wife, Kay Richards, of Spring Grove, Va.; and six grandchildren, Joshua Loehr and Ashley Loehr of Aberdeen, N.C., David Griffin II of Spring Hill, Fla., Jason Griffin and his wife, Alexandra, of Ruskin, Fla., Nathanial Griffin of Pinellas Park, Fla., and Ian Griffin of Bradenton, Fla.

Mrs. Griffin graduated from USC in 1964 with a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy. She practiced in the Richmond County area from 1975 until her retirement in 1999.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Pinewood cemetery, Pinewood, with the Rev. Frank Keels officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Victory Junction Gang Camp, 4500 Adam's Way, Randleman, NC 27317; or to The First Presbyterian Church of Rockingham, 904 Fayetteville Road, Rockingham, NC 28379.

HENRY J. MAGAZINE Jr.

Deacon Henry J. Magazine Jr., son of the late Rev. Henry and Eliza Charles Magazine, was born Oct. 10, 1925, in Lee County. He departed this life on Saturday, March 21, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

He grew up in a Christian home and was nurtured in the faith at Elizabeth Baptist Church. Later, in his youth, he confessed Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized. After moving to Sumter, he united with Trinity Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and sang in the male chorus and the Hallelujah Choir. He learned the art of tailoring in Kansas City, Mo., and was a master tailor who greatly influenced the world of fashions in Sumter County and surrounding areas. His career spanned approximately 60 years and was supported by a wide range of clients including local merchants, the military and law enforcement. He faithfully supported the Shriner's Children Hospital in Greenville by his generous charitable gifts.

His memories will be cherished by his beloved wife of 58 years, Josephine Anthony Magazine of the home; daughters, Shirley Magazine (the Rev. John Leven) Ward of Cheraw and Leza "Tilly" (Henry Jr.) Little of Charlotte, N.C.; son, Henry Magazine III of Sumter; stepmother, Eva Magazine of Bishopville; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Susie Mae Stewart of Atlanta, Eliza Bell (James) Parker of Chicago, Loretta M. Collier of Atlanta and Mattie M. Westry of Bishopville; brothers, Edward Magazine of Bishopville and Jasper (Sheri) Magazine of Clinton, Md.; in-laws, Clara Magazine of Cassatt and Betty Magazine of Chicago; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends including special friends, James Jones and Herbert Huff.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Ammie Stevens, Jessie Lee Butler, Andrew Magazine, George Magazine and David (Wallace) Magazine.

Viewing will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, 155 Wall St., Sumter, with the pastor, the Rev. Larry C. Weston, officiating, assisted by the Rev. George Johnson, the Rev. Joshua Dupree, Minister Alphonso Barker and the Rev. John L. Ward. Interment will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.

The body will be placed in the church at noon Saturday for viewing until the hour of service.

The family will receive friends at the home, 1322 Covent Garden Drive, Sumter, SC 29153.

ALVIN D. DUBOSE

BISHOPVILLE -- Alvin David Dubose, 59, husband of Dorothy Pack Dubose, died March 25, 2009, at his home.

Born in Lee County, he was a son of Gladys Rodgers Dubose and the late James A. Dubose Sr. Mr. Dubose was a member of Memorial Chapel Church, CMA.

Survivors include his wife and mother of Bishopville; a daughter, Stephanie Dubose Spink (David) of Columbia; four sisters, Pat Ries (Michael) of Minnesota, Mildred Christmas (Wilburn) of Bishopville, Christine Bryant (Robert) of Manning and Grace Toler (Ken) of Kansas; two brothers, Jimmy Dubose (Doris) and Ray Dubose (Susan), both of Bishopville; and a large number of loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Donnie Dubose.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Chapel Church, CMA with the Rev. Jim Peterson and the Rev. Don Riner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Sammie Christmas, Keith Dubose, Alvi Ridgeway, Glenn Seagers, Larry Huggins and Brian Smith.

Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Dubose, Carl Pack, Dewey Pack, Robert Pack and Ben Pack.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Memorial Chapel Church, CMA, 2509 Green Lane, Bishopville, SC 29010.

Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of the arrangements.

ETHEL JONES

Ethel Jones, 74, died Friday, March 20, 2009, at Riverview Living Facility, Baltimore.

Born Sept. 10, 1934, in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late Washington and Sarah Mellerson Jones. In her youth, she accepted Christ as her Savior and joined Mount Zion AME Church. She received her formal education at Felton Rosenwald School and was a graduate of Scott's Branch High School. She was married to Oscar Bizzell.

Survivors are two sons, Gregory (Karen) Bizzell and Ronald (Lula) Bizzell, both of Baltimore; four sisters, Celestine Johnson and Daisy Jones, both of New York, N.Y., Catherine (Dr. Glen) Jones-Smith of Buffalo, N.Y., and Shirley Jones of Miami, Fla.; two brothers, James (Yvonne) Jones of Manning and Preston Jones of Buffalo, N.Y.; an uncle, Leon Mellerson of Buffalo; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The remains will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Historic Mount Zion AME Church, MW Rickenbaker Road, Summerton, with the Rev. Dr. Willie J. Heggins II, pastor, officiating, assisting the Rev. Dr. J. Arthur McDonald, the Rev. Dr. Leslie J. Lovett, the Rev. C. Thompson and the Rev. O'Donald Dingle. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at the home of her brother and sister-in-law, James and Yvonne Jones, 2626 M.W. Rickenbaker Road, Summerton.

These services have been entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.
