ENGLISH COOPER

English "Mack" Cooper, 74, widower of Pauline Wilson Howard Cooper, died Thursday, March 26, 2009, at his residence.

He was born Sept. 28, 1934, in Lee County, a son of the late Mack and Viola Wheeler Cooper. He was educated in the public schools of Lee County. Early in life, he worked on the farm and was later employed by Sumter Laundry before moving to Baltimore, Md. Subsequently, he moved to Jersey City, N.J., and was employed as a truck driver until he retired in 2000. While living in New Jersey, he united with St. John Baptist Church and, after re-establishing his residency in Mayesville, became a faithful member of Unionville AME Church.

He leaves to cherish his loving memories: two daughters; 10 sons, to include James McCord, Wardell Plowden, James Howard, Herbert Howard and Johnnie Howard; six sisters, Ethel Elder, Bessie Lewis, Minnie Lisbon, Essie McMillian, Thelma Addison and Gladys Toney; 20 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; sons and daughters-in-law; six sisters-in-law; five brothers-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, including a very special friend, Gloria Abbey.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, George and Henry Cooper; and a sister, Sarah Billups.

Viewing will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Unionville AME Church with the pastor, the Rev. Alvin E. Webb, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Joshua Dupree and the Rev. Robert Myers Sr. Interment will follow in Unionville cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Wednesday for viewing until the hour of service.

The family will receive friends at the home, 2180 Avenue B, Mayesville, SC 29104.

Job's Mortuary Inc., 312 S. Main St., is in charge of arrangements.

ADELE F. KING

BRONX, N.Y. -- Adele Foster King died Monday, March 23, 2009, at her residence, 836 Tilden St., Bronx.

Born in Shiloh, she was the daughter of the late Luke Woods and Eula Mae Foster.

The family is receiving friends starting Thursday at the homestead of Hardy and Inez Baker, 782 Little Star Road, Manning.

These services have been entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home, LLC of Manning.

JAMES SHAW JR.

James Shaw Jr., 59, husband of Elanora Wilder Shaw, died Thursday, March 26, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 13, 1949, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late John and Lillie Mae Jones Shaw.

The family will receive friends at the home, 70 Robinson St.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

JAMES SPANN Jr.

James "Junebug" Spann Jr., 63, widow of Henrietta Brown Spann, died Monday, March 30, 2009, at Palmetto Health Richland.

He was born Aug. 20, 1945, in Sumter, a son of the late James Sr. and Cassie Mae Potts Spann.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 1015 Rye St., Sumter, SC 29150.

Funeral plans are incomplete and will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

ROBIN G. WILES

LYNCHBURG -- Robin Gilbert Wiles, 69, husband of Virginia "Bunny" Reed Wiles, died Saturday, March 28, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Fillmore, N.Y., he was a son of Maurice and Frances Gilbert Wiles. Mr. Wiles was employed as a truck driver with Nesbitt Transport Co.

Surviving are his wife of Lynchburg; his parents of Troy, N.C.; two daughters, Dawn Fagan and husband, Glen, of St. Cloud, Fla., and Tammy DeClemente and husband, Jason, of Charleston; a brother, Jeffery Wiles and wife, Ellie, of Troy, N.C.; two stepsons, Walter Bosch of Gambrills, Md., and Donald R. Bosch of Arlington, Texas; two stepdaughters, Deborah Adams and husband, Larry, of Florence and Barbara Connell and husband, Rick, of Lynchburg; three grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; and 12 step-great-grandchildren.

Services will be private.

Memorials may be made to the Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, 2990 S. Sepulveda Blvd., Suite 300-C, Los Angles, CA 90064.

REV. WILLIE W. BUTLER

The Rev. Willie Walter Butler, 106, widower of Sarah Qural Butler, died March 29, 2009, at his home, 3640 Ramsey Road, Sumter.

Born Oct. 19, 1902, in Georgetown, he was a son of the late Isaiah and Alice Pickney Butler.

The family is receiving friends at the home of his nephew and niece, the Rev. Sam and Elizabeth S. Miller, 3640 Ramsey Road.

These services have been entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

THOMAS JOHNSON

Thomas Johnson, 76, died Monday morning, March 30, 2009, at his residence, 1146 Lincoln St., Summerton.

Born April 22, 1932, in the Jordan section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Charles Sr. and Helen Blackwell Johnson.

The family is receiving friends at the home, 1146 Lincoln St., Summerton.

These services have been entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

DAVID GIVENS

David Givens died Saturday evening, March 28, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, after an illness.

He was born in Sumter, a son of the late Willie S. Sr. and Gladys B. Givens.

The family will receive friends at the home, 137 John St., beginning Wednesday afternoon.

Arrangements will be announced later by Sumter Funeral Services Inc.

ALBERTUS WRIGHT Sr.

Albertus "Bert" Wright Sr., 70, husband of Margaret Prioleau Wright, entered eternal rest on Monday, March 30, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

He was born July 3, 1938, in Sumter County, a son of the late Rosa Wright Gooden and stepson of Mayfield Gooden.

The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home, 733 Maney St., Sumter.

Funeral plans will be announced by Community Funeral Home of Sumter.

LOUIS TAYLOR Jr.

Louis Taylor Jr. departed this earthly life on Monday, March 30, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, after an illness.

He was a son of the late Louis and Ida Bell Taylor.

The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Mary King, 711 Warley St.

Arrangements will be announced later by Sumter Funeral Services Inc.

PAUL CRAWFORD

Paul Crawford was born Sept. 30, 1926, in Wellsburg, W.Va., a son of the late George Muzingo and Dorothy Crawford. He died Monday, March 30, 2009.

Mr. Crawford was raised in an orphanage. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific in the Army Rangers. From here he received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge and the Pacific Theatre Ribbons with two Battle Stars. He also served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He received numerous awards and ribbons from there as well. He retired from the Air Force as a master sergeant after 24 ½ years. Mr. Crawford also retired from the Sumter Police Department in 1987 as a detective sergeant, C.S.I. Mr. Crawford was a Master Mason, and a life member of VFW and the American Legion. He was a member of the First Southern Methodist Church of Sumter.

Mr. Crawford married the love of his life, Joanne Cole, in 1949, and she preceded him in death in August 2007.

He was also preceded in death by his twin sister, Pauline Mauder of Prosperity; a stepsister, Rosa Lee Johnson of W.Va.; his mother-in-law, Lillian Cole; three brothers-in-law, Odell Patterson, Robert Smith and Pat Veltre; a sister-in-law, Marguerite Veltre; a niece, Marsha Smith Skey; and a nephew, Bobby W. Smith Jr.

Survivors include his daughter, Pamela A. Kruschke (Tracy) of Spring Green, Wis.; two sons, Bruce A. Crawford of Sumter and David B. Crawford (Sara) of North Myrtle Beach; six grandchildren, John P. Longseth, Amber K. Crawford, Joanne M. Crawford, B. Allan Crawford Jr., D. Brian Crawford and Brandon T. Crawford; two great-grandsons, Jordan P. Crawford and Mason K. Longseth; a stepsister, Betty Covet; three sisters-in-law, Eleanor C. Patterson and Rose C. Smith, both of Sumter, and Patricia C. Ciampi of Houston, Texas; and a brother-in-law, Fred C. Cole of Sumter.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Southern Methodist Church with the Rev. Ellison Evans and the Rev. Barbee Parsons officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park with full military honors.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be John P. Longseth, B. Allan Crawford, Brandon T. Crawford, D. Brian Crawford, Jim Price, and David Stone.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Sumter Police Department.

Memorials may be made to First Southern Methodist Church, 321 Miller Road, Sumter, SC 29150.

"Dad, you were one tough cookie, but a loving father, grandfather, and husband. We know you are now at peace with Mom, your lifelong sweetheart. We miss you both so much and you will not be forgotten. In our hearts you will stay forever."

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.

LORRIANE K. McCRAY

KINGSTREE -- Lorriane Kelly McCray, 65, of Kingstree, died Monday, March 30, 2009, at her residence.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 33 Antioch Loop, Kingstree.

Funeral services are incomplete and will be announced by Henryhand Funeral Home of Kingstree.

CATHERINE K. McKENZIE

Catherine Kennedy McKenzie, 72, widow of George "Buddy" McKenzie, died Sunday evening, March 29, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born April 3, 1936, in New Zion, Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late William Kennedy and Margaret Cooper McKenzie.

The family is receiving friends at the home, U.S. Highway 301, Gable.

These services have been entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.
