Katie Harvin Wright, 75, wife of Rufus Wright, entered eternal rest at her home, 134 Carver St., Sumter, on Monday, March 30, 2009.

Born May 8, 1933, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Ruth Lloyd.

The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home, 134 Carver St.

Funeral plans will be announced by Community Funeral Home of Sumter.

VERMELL R. WITHERSPOON

Vermell Richburg Witherspoon, 75, was born Aug. 8, 1933, in Clarendon County, daughter of the late Cokley and Bertha Robinson Richburg. She departed this life on Saturday, March 28, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

The family will receive friends at the home of her son, Gregory B. Witherspoon, 1330 Boulevard Road, Sumter, SC 29153.

Funeral plans will be announced later by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

PAUL M. STRANGE

MANNING -- Paul Morgan Strange, of 7918 Bloomville Road, Manning, died Monday, March 30, 2009, at his home in Manning.

Arrangements will be announced by Stephens Funeral Home & Crematory, 304 N. Church St., Manning, (803) 435-2179.

AZILEE C. McALISTER

Azilee Carolyn McAlister, 89, widow of Roland McAlister, died Monday, March 30, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Cades, she was a daughter of the late Walker and Lillie Mae Edwards Kirby. Mrs. McAlister was a member of Southside Baptist Church and a retired cafeteria manager with Sumter School District 17.

Surviving are three sons, William "Son" McAlister and wife, Doris, Charles McAlister and wife, Faye, and Johnny McAlister and wife, Meree, all of Sumter; a daughter, Faye Wooley and husband, Ron, of Spartanburg; a sister, Vergie Bergie of Sumter; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Atkinson officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home of Charles and Faye McAlister, 1290 Craig Road.

Memorials may be made to Southside Baptist Church Building Fund, 1116 Manning Road, Sumter, SC 29150.

FRED BROWN Sr.

KINGSTREE -- Fred Brown Sr., 88, of the Trio community of Andrews, died Saturday, March 28, 2009, at Williamsburg Regional Hospital, Kingstree.

The family will receive friends at 29 Mesquite Lane, Andrews.

Funeral services are incomplete and will be announced later by Henryhand Funeral Home of Kingstree.

FRANCIS R. BROGDON SR.

Francis Richardson "Ricky" Brogdon Sr., 59, died Saturday, March 28, 2009.

Born in Conway, he was a son of Cecil Young Brogdon and the late Judson Pringle Brogdon Sr. Mr. Brogdon was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter and employed by CNA Construction. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

Survivors include his mother of Sumter; a son, Francis R. "Richie" Brogdon Jr. of Sumter; a daughter, Ashley B. Welch (Lance) of Sumter; three grandchildren, Hunter Richardson Brogdon, Cayden Edward Brogdon and Ansley Reagan Welch; a brother, Judson P. Brogdon Jr. of Sumter; two sisters, Lee Brogdon Wise and Lynn Brogdon, both of Sumter; two aunts, Hannah Seymour and Peggy Young, both of Sumter; and a number of nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Concord Presbyterian Church with the Rev. John Bauknight officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Brogdon, Mike Brogdon, Will Wise, Brogdon Butler, Claude Newman and James Young.

Honorary pallbearers will be employees of CNA Construction and members of the Sumter Fire Department.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home of his daughter.

Memorials may be made to the Concord Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 3350 E. Brewington Road, Sumter, SC 29153; or American Diabetes Association, 2711 Middleburg Drive, Kittrell Center, Suite 110, Columbia, SC 29204.

PAUL M. STRANGE

MANNING – Paul Morgan Strange, 62, died Monday, March 30, 2009, at his home.

Born Oct. 31, 1946, in Manning, he was a son of the late Harvey Judson Strange and Dorothy White Strange Myers. He was a retired construction worker and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are three uncles, Julius White (Martha) of Greeleyville, Don White of Coward and Ed White (Joan) of Prattville, Ala.; and a number of nieces and nephews, to include Annette Griffin (Mike) of Manning.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Oak Grove cemetery with the Rev. Ashley Brunson officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

REGINALD BOSTON

Reginald Boston, husband of Jennifer A. Walker Boston and son of Randy Sr. and Susan Boston, died Monday, March 30, 2009, at his home, 475 Eternity Lane.

The family will receive friends at the home of Lewis and Connie Walker, 3750 Wedgefield Road, and at the home of his parents, 2740 Sparkleberry Landing Road, Pinewood.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by James Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

BRENDA S. JOHNSON

SANTEE – Brenda Shuler Johnson, 66, of the Providence community and wife of Harris Johnson, died Monday, March 30, 2009, in an Augusta, Ga., hospital after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Providence United Methodist Church with the Rev. Karen E. Starr officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Johnson was a native of the Providence community, a daughter of the late N. Leo and Lois Felkel Shuler. A graduate of Holly Hill High School and Limestone College, she was a certified public accountant and owner of Johnson's Accounting Service. She was an active member of Providence United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Manly J.D. Dantzler Chapter of UDC.

Surviving are her husband of the home; a daughter, Joyce E. Geddings of Myrtle Beach; sons, Billy (Yvette) Johnson and John David Johnson of Santee; a sister, Mrs. George (Marie) Rast of Cameron; brothers, Barry (Sue) Shuler of Bethesda, Md., Boyd (Bet) Shuler of Orangeburg and Russell (Fran) Shuler of Asheville, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Avinger Funeral Home in Holly Hill and other times at the residence.

WILLIE W. BUTLER

Pastor Willie Walter Butler, 106, widower of Sarah Valentine Butler and Eva Butler, died Sunday evening, March 29, 2009, at his home, 3640 Ramsey Road.

Born Oct. 19, 1902, in Greeleyville, he was a son of the late Isaiah and Alice Pikney Butler. He received his formal education at Reese Chapel and furthered his education at Morris College and Hampton University. When he accepted Christ, he joined First Baptist Church of Newport News, Va. After moving to Sumter, he joined St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church. He was the pastor of St. Paul Baptist in Jamaica, Va., and Oak Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors are his caregivers, niece and nephew Elizabeth and the Rev.Sam Miller of Sumter; four daughters, Marion Brown, Willie Mae Joyner, Evelyn (Cornell) Hartwell and Vergie (Victor) Baldwin, all of Newport News; a son, Willie Butler Jr. of Virginia; and two sisters, Jessie Mae Butler Sigler of Sumter and Marian Harris of New York.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hayes F. and LaNelle J. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning, with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, presiding, the Rev. Sam Miller, eulogist, assisting the Revs. Gary Miller, O'Donald Dingle, James Johnson and Elton Hilton.

Entombment will be in Hampton Memorial Gardens, Hampton, Va., with Cooke Bros. Funeral of Newport News in charge.

The family is receiving friends at the home of his nephew and niece, the Rev. Sam and Elizabeth S. Miller, 3640 Ramsey Road, Sumter.

These services have been entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

JAMES SHAW Jr.

James Shaw Jr., 59, husband of Ellanora Wilder Shaw, departed this earthly life on Friday, March 26, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 13, 1949, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late John and Lillie Mae Jones Shaw. He was employed at Sumter Installation, before his illness. His favorite hobby was fishing.

He leaves to mourn his passing: a devoted and loving wife, Ellanora Shaw of the home; three sons, Timothy Shaw (Alethia) of Washington, D.C., and Ronnie Oliver and Christopher McMillan of Sumter; a daughter, Jennifer Simon of Sumter; three brothers, Leonard (Rodine) Jones, Alexander Shaw and John (Bertha Mae) Shaw, all of Sumter; two sisters, Betsy Ann Tate of Baltimore, Md., and Catherine Smoot (William) of Sumter; seven grandchildren; an aunt, Ruth B. McFadden of Sumter; a very devoted and special friend, Eric Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday from the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel, Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., Sumter, with Pastor O.J. Hannah officiating, eulogist, assisted by Pastor Johnny Davis.

The family will receive friends at the home, 70 Robinson St., Sumter.

The funeral procession will leave from the home at 1:30 p.m.

Floral bearers and pallbearers will be friends of the family.

Services directed by the staff and management of Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

ISAIAH JOE

Funeral services for retired Master Sgt. Isaiah Joe will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Greater Gethsemane Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

He died on Friday, March 27, 2009, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Isaiah was born in Darlington, a son of Marion Sr. and Dorothy Mae Wilds Joe. He graduated from Mayo High School in 1977. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army and retired after 22 years. At the time of his demise, he was employed as a postal clerk at the U.S. Post Office, Hartsville.

He was preceded by his mother and two brothers, James Lee and Woodrow Joe.

Survivors besides his father are his wife of 29 years, Doris Brown Joe; daughters, Sharace Yashica Joe, Michelle Renee' Joe and Jeanette Marie Joe; grandson, Davyd Alexavier Goodwin; brothers, Nathaniel (Juanita) Joe, Marion Jr. (Dorothy) Joe, Jerome Joe, Lloyd (Silola) Joe and Maxie Joe; sisters, Lucille (James) Harris, Dorothy Kirkpatrick, Estelle (Herbert) Smiling and Lucille (John) Speights; mother-in-law, Marie Scott; brother-in-law, Dexter (Carmen) Scott; and a host of other relatives and friends.

The family is receiving friends at 3080 Sunvalley Drive, Sumter.
