JEREMIAH BRAILSFORD

SUMMERTON -- Jeremiah Brailsford, husband of Carrie Singleton Brailsford, died Friday, April 3, 2009, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

Born Nov. 27, 1927, in Summerton, he was a son of the late Bertie E. and Rena Glover Brailsford. His education was obtained in the public school of Clarendon County. During his youth, he joined Historic Liberty Hill AME Church, where he maintained his membership for numerous years. Later, he attended the Deliverance of All Sins Ministry in Manning. He was formerly employed with the construction industry in Columbia and retired after 25 years of service.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carrie Mable Brailsford of Summerton; three sons, Jerry (Janifer) Brailsford of Pineville and Roy Brailsford and William (Doretha) Brailsford, both of Summerton; two daughters, Rena (Kevin) Harrison and Shirley (William) Thames, both of Manning; sister, Rachel Jenkins of Queens, N.Y.; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sons, Johnnie, Cleveland and Christopher Brailsford; grandson, Cleveland Brailsford Jr.; four brothers; and four sisters.

Funeral services will be held at noon Thursday at Historic Liberty Hill AME Church, Summerton, with the pastor, the Rev. Dr. Leslie J. Lovett, officiating, assisted by the Rev. James Blanding, the Rev. Bernard Richburg and the Rev. Martha Richburg. Interment will follow in Liberty Hill cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 1076 Brailsford Lane, Summerton.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home and Chapel is in charge of services.

RAYNARD L. McBRIDE

Raynard Linwood "Meatman" McBride, 47, died Thursday, April 2, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 17, 1961, in Sumter, a son of Sallie Mae McBride (Elijah) Singleton-Phillips and the late Charlie Singleton. He was raised in a Christian home and, in his youth, attended Trinity Baptist Church. He attended the public schools in Sumter and graduated from Sumter High School in the Class of 1981. During his years at Sumter High, he played football and lifted weights, where he received many awards. Mr. McBride was employed at Harvin Packing Co. for a number of years and also worked at various restaurants in Columbia until his illness.

Surviving are three loving daughters, Crystal Spann, Sharonlyn (Aaron) Barnette and Lanette McBride, all of Sumter; mother and stepfather, Sallie Mae (Elijah) Singleton-Phillips of Sumter; two brothers, Charles Singleton of Columbia and Patrick Singleton of Sumter; a sister, Dena (Freddie) Peterson of Sumter; aunts and uncles, Gloria Jean (Herbert) Butler, Mattie Carter, Edith (Arthur) Pierce and Dorothy Jones, all of Sumter, Carrie Mae (William) Johnson of Bronx, N.Y., and Ollie Richardson of Sumter; seven grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Johnnie Singleton; maternal grandmother, Mattie Richardson McBride; paternal grandparents, Rosa and John Singleton; and two uncles, Arthur McBride and John Singleton Jr.

Viewing will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary Inc.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Salem Chapel and Heritage Center, 101 S. Salem St., Sumter, with the Rev. James Jackson, eulogist, assisted by the Rev. Kenneth Choice and Minister Rosa Muldrow. Interment will follow in Bradford cemetery.

The family repast will be at the Salem Chapel and Heritage Center.

The family will receive friends at the home of his mother, 9 Kent St., Sumter, SC 29150.

Job's Mortuary Inc., 312 S. Main St., is in charge of arrangements.

JOHN H. PEAVY

RICHMOND, Va. – John Henry Peavy, 94, widower of Carolina H. Peavy, died Monday, April 6, 2009, at Glenburnie Rehab Center in Richmond.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Stephens Funeral Home & Crematory, 304 N. Church St., Manning, (803) 435-2179.

HANNAH V. SIMMONS

DALZELL – Hannah Virginia Simmons, 63, died Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 2, 1945, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Roland and Inez Turner. She was a carnival worker and a member of Promise Land Ministries in Sumter.

Surviving are a son, Henry Robert "Robby" Stone (Cindy) of Dalzell; two daughters, Cheryl Kinden (Bill) of North Dakota and Barbara Ann Maxwell of Pelion; and eight grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sumter cemetery with the Rev. Jamie McElveen officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home, 304 N. Church St., Manning.

MAXINE SMITH

Maxine Smith entered eternal rest on April 5, 2009, at her residence in Philadelphia, Pa.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Wilson's Funeral Home, 403 S. Main St., Bishopville.

LETHA SOLOMON

LYNCHBURG -- Funeral services for Letha Solomon will be held at 11 a.m. today at Green Bay Missionary Baptist Church, Lynchburg, with the Rev. Frederick Martin, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Solomon cemetery.

The family is receiving friends from noon to 9 p.m. daily at the home of her parents, Willie and Margaret Solomon, 1184 Cartersville Highway, Lamar.

Services directed by Jefferson Funeral Home of Lynchburg.

She died Saturday, April 4, 2009, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

Letha was a member of Green Bay Missionary Baptist Church. She also attended the public schools of Darlington County and was an employee of Craig Industries for many years.

She leaves to cherish her memories: her father and mother of the home, two sisters, five brothers, and a host of other relatives and friends.

SAMUEL ROBINSON

Samuel "Buggy" Robinson, 52, departed this life on Thursday, April 2, 2009, at his residence in Pinewood.

He was born July 3, 1956, in Pinewood, a son of the late James and Mary Spann Robinson. He attended school in Pinewood and graduated from Sumter High School in 1974. He also attended Central Carolina Technical College and served 18 years in the U.S. Navy, where he completed tours of duty in Kenya, West Africa, England and Europe. He received numerous awards during his years in the military, retiring in 1995.

He leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Joyce Gail Robinson of Concord, N.C.; a son, Justin Robinson; a sister, Sarah Inez Robinson Rose of Sumter; a brother, retired Chief Petty Officer Ervin (Pricilla) Robinson of Columbia; four nieces, Teresa Rose-Wilson, Lutrina Robinson, Vickie Robinson and Jackie Robinson; a nephew, Charles Edward Rose of Sumter; three uncles, Edward Spann Sr., Johnnie Spann Sr. and Harold (Annie Mae) Spann, all of Pinewood; two aunts, Thelma Spann Holland and Novella Spann Pervis, both of Pinewood; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, James Robinson Jr. and Geroy Robinson; a sister, Hattie Mae Robinson; and a niece, Gail E. Rose.

Viewing will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary Inc.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Salem Chapel and Heritage Center, 101 S. Salem St., with Dr. Ralph W. Canty Sr., eulogist. Interment will follow in New Hope Community cemetery, Pinewood.

The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Thursday for viewing until the hour of service.

The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Sarah Inez R. Rose, 838 Barwick Road, Sumter, SC 29150.

JAMES MYERS

James Myers, 69, husband of Dorothy Bennett Myers, entered eternal rest on Saturday, April 4, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born April 6, 1940, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Jacob Sr. and Isabella Wells Myers. He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. His Christian journey began at an early age. He was a member of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. He was employed at Korn Industries, where he retired after 27 years. He touched many lives as he played and coached baseball in the Tindal community.

Survivors include a loving wife, Dorothy Bennett Myers of the home; three sons, William (Emma) Hastie of Deltona, Fla., Abraham (Delila) Myers of Charlotte, and Joseph (Brenda) Myers of Sumter; two daughters, Sylvia (Jermiah) Heyward of Sumter and Sandra (Craig) Williams of Columbia; a brother, Jacob Myers Jr. of Sumter; a sister, Elizabeth Myers Johnson of Sumter; sisters-in-law, Katie (Joe) Osorio, Mary Bennett and Margaret Bennett; brothers-in-law, Deacon Bobby Bennett and the Rev. Neal (Janie) Bennett; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie Wright officiating and the Rev. Dr. Ella Bugsby. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home, 345 Rolling Creek Drive, Sumter, where the procession will leave from at 1:15 p.m. Thursday.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

JOHN CROWDER

John Crowder, husband of Terry Linda Gray Crowder, entered eternal rest on Monday, April 6, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born May 18, 1954, in Baltimore, Md., he was a son of the late John Smith and Katie Crowder Carr.

The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home, 3560 Britton Brogdon Road.

Funeral plans are incomplete and will be announced by Community Funeral Home of Sumter.

NELL L. TRAYNUM

Nell Loveland Traynum, 85, widow of Marvin Carl Traynum, passed away Sunday, April 5, 2009, at Village Care Nursing Home in King, N.C., after a prolonged illness.

Born in Anderson, she was a daughter of the late Cleve and Lillian Laboon Loveland. Mrs. Traynum was a faithful member of Westside Baptist Church for more than 40 years and a member of the Ladies' Love In Action Sunday School Class.

Mrs. Traynum was a loving mother and nanny who is survived by a daughter, Patricia Ann Brown and husband, Bill, of King; a son, Michael Carl Traynum and wife, Bonnie, of Sumter; a granddaughter, Leigh Ann Martin and husband, Marcus, of King; five grandsons, William R. Brown and wife, April, and Bryan C. Brown and wife, Marcia, of King and Devyn Traynum, Mikhail Traynum and Cayce Cole of Sumter; three great-granddaughters; six great-grandsons; and a great-great-granddaughter.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Evergreen Memorial Park with the Rev. Mark Bordeaux officiating.

Viewing will be at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home for those friends and family wishing to pay their respects until Wednesday evening.

The family will then receive friends at the home of her son, Mike Traynum, 1375 Morris Way, Sumter, on Wednesday evening.

Memorials may be made to Westside Baptist Church, 554 Pinewood Road, Sumter, SC 29154.

Mrs. Traynum's family would like to express their sincerest appreciation to the nurses, CNA's and administration for the support and care they gave during her illness.

WHITMAN O. RICHBURG

MONCKS CORNER – Whitman O'Brian Richburg, 93, husband of Merceline McCabe Richburg, died Sunday, April 5, 2009, at the Dorn VA Hospital in Columbia.

Born Dec. 21, 1915, in Manning, he was a son of George Edward and Naomi Ethlyn Lowder Richburg. He was retired superintendent of Banks Construction Co. in Charleston and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are a son, Ernest Richburg of Summerville; two daughters, Mary R. Burch (Bob) of Skysville, Md., and Patricia R. Molett of Wilmington, N.C.; a stepson, Joe Alvin Graham (Jean) of Sumter; a stepdaughter, Claire Clark (Willard) of Manning; two sisters, Regenia Alsbrooks and Theresa Alsbrooks, both of North Carolina; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruby Bodiford Richburg; a grandson, Charles Joseph "Joey" Anderson; three brothers, Earl, Juel and Edward Richburg; and a sister, Albertha Dennis.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Drew Taylor officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Berkeley Memorial Gardens in Moncks Corner.

Pallbearers will be Willard Clark, Jason Graham, Johnny Prescott, Al Dennis, Scott Cooper and Ronnie Martin.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Willard and Claire Clark, 1095 Webber St., Manning, SC 29102.
