WILLIAM F. DOVE

William "Billy" Floyd Dove, age 23, died unexpectedly on Saturday, April 4, 2009.

He was born in Youngstown, Ohio, a son of William "Bill" Lynn Dove and Mary Lynn Cozzy Dove. He graduated with honors from Manning High School Class of 2004 and was a service mechanic at Prothro Chevrolet for five years. Billy was also an avid hunter, an excellent shooter and loved spending time with his family and friends.

Surviving in addition to his parents are two sisters, Sierra and Summer and her fiance, Jeff Campman, all of Ohio; a niece and three nephews; paternal grandparents, Floyd and Edith Dove of Berlin, Pa.; maternal grandparents, Ruth Cozzy and the late John Cozzy of New York; several aunts, uncles and cousins; a close group of friends; and best friends, Andy and Kody.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter for the arrangements.

CHARLES E. GIBBS

TIMMONSVILLE -- Charles Edward "Eddie" Gibbs, 58, died April 8, 2009, after a long illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Sardis Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Lake Swamp Baptist Church cemetery.

Mr. Gibbs was born in Florence County, a son of Ethel Smith Gibbs and the late Fred Byrd "Jack" Gibbs. He was a member of Sardis Baptist Church. Mr. Gibbs was a member of the American Legion Baseball Team, Timmonsville; he was a golfer; and loved anything involved with the outdoors, especially fishing. In 1990, he was a kidney and pancreas recipient. He worked for Wellman Industries for 27 years.

Survivors are his mother of Timmonsville; two daughters, Mandi White (Dee) of Columbia and Casey White (Jesse) of Lexington; three brothers, Bobby Gibbs (Debbie) of Florence, Fred Gibbs (Alexis) of Darlington and Clarke Gibbs (Candace) of Lynchburg; his sister, Jackie Clay (Harold) of Timmonsville; and two grandchildren, Dalton White and Maylee White.

Mr. Gibbs was preceded in death by his father and a son, Eric Gibbs.

Memorials may be made to Sardis Baptist Church, 3129 Sardis Highway, Timmonsville, SC 29161.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home, 4210 W. Palmetto St., Florence.

Layton-Anderson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

SHADESIA J. WELLS

Shadesia Jade Wells, 19 months, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

She was a daughter of Jason and Daphney Esteve Wells.

The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home, 760 Commander Road.

Funeral plans will be announced by Community Funeral Home of Sumter.

CHIEKO S. BERRY

Chieko S. Berry, 77, wife of Robert "Bobby" Berry, died Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at a local nursing facility.

Mrs. Berry was born Feb. 6, 1932, in Osaka, Japan. She was retired from Campbell Soup Co. and was a Buddhist.

Survivors include her husband of Sumter; a son, Chris Spencer (Rhonda) of Sumter; a grandson, Daniel Spencer; two brothers; and four sisters.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home, 1270 Ronda Drive.

Memorials may be made to SGI, 228 B Oneil Court, Columbia, SC 29223.

SAM ANDREWS

The Rev. Sam Andrews, brother of Gloria Andrews Durant, entered eternal rest on April 6, 2009, in Columbus, Ga.

The funeral service will be held at noon Friday at the Metropolitan Baptist Church, Columbus.

NOLIA ANN BENENHALEY

Nolia Ann Benenhaley, 69, widow of John A. "Mutt" Benenhaley, died Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at her home.

Services will be announced by Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter.

WILLIAM G. DesCHAMPS Jr.

BISHOPVILLE -- Services for William Green DesChamps Jr., 91, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethlehem United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Paul Rogers officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethlehem United Methodist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home of Green and Cindy DesChamps, 136 Denny Pond Road.

Mr. DesChamps died at his home April 8, 2009.

Born Aug. 29, 1917, in Bishopville, he was a son of the late William Green and Etta Hearon DesChamps. He was a graduate of Clemson Agricultural and Mechanical College with a bachelor of science degree in 1938. Upon graduation from Clemson, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, 47th Field Artillery. He married the late Elizabeth Noble Duvall on March 8, 1944, and they were married for 60 years, until her death in March 2004. He was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church and served it faithfully his entire life. William Green's professional career consisted of being owner and president of Bishopville Petroleum Co. Inc.; Quick Mart of Bishopville Inc.; president of Bishopville Cotton and Gin Co.; and past president of the S.C. Oil Jobbers Association 1957-1959.

Affectionately called "Mr. Willie Green, " Mr. DesChamps found no greater joy than helping others and being a true friend to all. He was a former mayor of Bishopville, a South Carolina state senator and a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives.

In 1975, he was appointed to the Clemson University board of trustees and loyally served as a board member and trustee emeritus until his death. Clemson University also honored him with the Alumni Distinguished Service Award and the Clemson Medallion, the highest recognition bestowed by the University.

He was past president of the Clemson IPTAY Club and a member of the IPTAY board of directors. His love and devotion to Clemson University and the Clemson Tigers was his lifelong commitment and pledge.

He is survived by a daughter, Ruth Kinsey DesChamps of Pawleys Island; two sons, William Green DesChamps III and Carroll Green DesChamps II and his wife, Cindy, all of Bishopville; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Moore Winesett, Julia Duvall DesChamps and William Green DesChamps IV; and three great-grandchildren, Joe, Green and Lily Winesett.

Memorials may be made to the Bethlehem United Methodist Church: Building Fund, P.O. Box 167, Bishopville, SC 29010 or to the Clemson University Foundation: William Green DesChamps Jr. Donations, P.O. Box 1889, Clemson, SC 29633.

FRANCES B. HOGAN

CHAPEL HILL -- Frances Burns Hogan, 86, died April 6, 2009, at her home in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Mrs. Hogan grew up in Sumter. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alwin C. Burns Sr.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two brothers, Alwin C. Burns Jr. And Richard B. Burns.

Mrs. Hogan received her undergraduate degree from Winthrop University. Upon graduation, she taught in Winthrop's physical education department. She was given a scholarship to complete her graduate work at the University of Iowa. While obtaining her master's degree, she was teaching full-time for the University of Iowa.

Frances came to Chapel Hill in 1946 as an instructor in the physical education department. She was employed by UNC-CH for 38 years. During that time, she wore many different hats and was bestowed honors and awards for her contributions.

She taught and ran the women's intramural program, acted as faculty advisor to the Women's Athletic Association and coached the women's tennis team for 23 years. Frances was an outstanding tennis player and coach who developed the UNC Women's Tennis Team into a nationally recognized varsity tennis program. It was not long before her team competed for NCAA National Championships. In 1973, Mrs. Hogan was appointed the first director of Women's Intercollegiate Athletics at UNC-CH. This title later changed to associate athletic program when the women's athletic program went under the NCAA.

Her many honors and recognitions included N.C. Tennis Hall of Fame; recipient of the N.C. Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance; Winthrop University Athletics Hall of Fame; Sumter Sports Hall of Fame; and Honorary Order of the Valkyries. Her personal tennis talents remained high as she won the N.C. Tennis Championship in women's singles and mixed doubles during that period.

Mrs. Hogan was a member of University United Methodist Church. She was married to George Pickard Hogan for more than 59 years.

Along with her husband, she is survived by her children, Alwin B. Hogan and wife, Vickie, of Myrtle Beach and Frances B. Hogan of Rocky Mount, N.C.; grandchildren, George W. Harris, Roger E. Harris Jr. and Kelly Frances Hogan; her sister-in-law, Emmie Reland Burns; and nephews, Richard, Alwin, Claude and Charlie.

She will be greatly missed by her family and all those who knew and loved her. Her life was truly an inspiration to her children, an example of integrity and loyalty unsurpassed. Her sense of humor and wonderful wit were a joy. Women's athletics has lost a person completely devoted to the betterment of the games played and the women that played them.

Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Old Chapel Hill cemetery by the Rev. Carl King.

FLORINE G. WILLIAMS

Florine Greene Williams, 85, widow of Eugene D. Williams, died Thursday, April 9, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born April 4, 1924, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Luther and Lottie Pinkney Greene.

The family will receive friends at the family home, 1013 Dibert St., Sumter.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

CARL L. JOHNSON

Carl Levester Johnson, 36, of 4464 Amelia Drive, Sumter, entered eternal rest on Saturday, April 4, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born July 25, 1972, in Jersey City, N.J., he was a son of Tommy Wilson and the late Pearl E. Johnson. He attended the public schools of Sumter County and graduated from Hillcrest High School in 1993. He was employed as a painter with Sumter Metal.

Survivors are his father, Tommy Wilson of New York, N.Y.; companion, Brenda Johnson of the home; and two sons, Quentin Brown and Raheem Washington.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Community Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Parker officiating. Burial will follow in Singleton cemetery on St. Paul Church Road.

The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home, 4464 Amelia Drive, Sumter, where the procession will leave from at 12:15 p.m. Saturday.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of theses arrangements.

BRANDON A. HARVIN Jr.

Brandon Antwan Harvin Jr., infant son of Brandon Antwan Harvin and Shanique Johnson, was born April 3, 2009, at Palmetto Health Richland, Columbia, and died Thursday, April 3, 2009.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today in Walker cemetery with the Rev. M.G. Walters officiating.

Sumter Funeral Services Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
