Edna Havird Fly
June 5, 2008

Edna Havird Fly, 96, of 268 Lake Forest Drive, Spartanburg, widow of Edward Leroy Fly, died Thursday, June 5, 2008, at the Spartanburg Regional Hospital.
She was born on April 1, 1912 in Silverstreet to the late Benjamin Mayer and Maggie Susan Long Havird.
Mrs. Fly was retired from Green Textile and was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church of Spartanburg.
She is survived by three sons, Edward Leroy Fly of Warner Robins, GA, John Mayer Fly and Thomas Havird Fly both of Spartanburg; a sister Mildred Havird Vincent of Ft. Belvoir, VA; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday at Silverstreet Lutheran Church by the Rev. Steve Jackson. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Silverstreet Lutheran Church, PO Box 48, Silverstreet, SC, 29145.
Her grandchildren did serve as pallbearers.

Mary Long Culp
June 2, 2008

Mary M. Long Culp of Mooresville, NC went to be with her Lord and Savior on June 2, 2008. She was born in the Mount Pilgrim section of Newberry County in 1912, a daughter of the late John H. Walter Long and Florence Waters Long. She attended the Newberry County schools and is an alumnus of Newberry College. She was a devoted, caring and giving person to the family and the community. Mrs. Culp was a member of the Central United Methodist Church of Mooresville, NC, and a former member of Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Prosperity.
Services were held at Central United Methodist Church and interment at Glenwood Cemetery on June 5, at 2:00 PM.
Mrs. Culp is survived by her loving and devoted husband Rockwell M. Culp of the home and a son Dr. John R. Culp of Sarasota, Fl.; three wonderful grandchildren Alex, Amanda and Laura all of Sarasota, Fl. She is also survived by two loving and devoted nephews and a niece, Donald M. Long (Linda), John L. Long, both of Prosperity and Olivia C. Long of Manhattan NY; one great niece Donna L. Snelgrove (Dean) and two great nephews, Bryan E. Long (Kristal) of Prosperity, and Christopher Long; one great, great niece Stephanie N. Long and five great, great nephews Jesse D. Snelgrove, Justin S. Snelgrove, Jeremy D. Snelgrove, Casey A. Snelgrove and Jospeh A. Long of Presperity. She was predeceased by a special brother and sister-in-law, George W. and Pearl M. Long.
Whitaker Funeral Home is serving the Long family.

George D. “Duke” Singley, Jr.
July 30, 2008

George D. “Duke” Singley, Jr., 80, of 4892 SC Highway 773 died Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at his residence
He was born on May 8, 1928 in Prosperity to the late George D. and Louise Elisor Singley. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Pomaria. He had worked in the pulpwood industry and was an avid fisherman and hunter.
Mr. Singley is survived by his wife of 55 years, Pauline Gruber Singley; a daughter and son in law, Betty and Jerry Sligh of Pomaria; sons, G. Thurmond “Butch” Singley and Billy Singley both of the home, and Ernest Singley of Pomaria; sisters, Helen Bundrick of Pomaria and Sara Smith of Newberry; grandchildren, Tracy Arrowood, David Stevens, Charles Stevens, Eddie Singley, Andy Singley and Kelsey Singley; and great grandchildren, April and Joshua Arrowood. He was predeceased by a sister, Drunnelle Brown and a brother, Thomas Singley.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 PM Friday at Whitaker Funeral Home by the Rev. Rev. Brent Nichols. Interment with military rites was in St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6:30 to 7:30 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home.
Active pallbearers were Lloyd Arrowood, Brian Sligh, Jimmy Wilson, Kenny Bouknight, Carold Wicker, and James Richardson.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2496 SC Highway 773, Pomaria, SC 29126.

Jane Summer Ragland
July 25, 2008

Jane Summer Ragland, age 85, died July 25, 2008 at the Brian Center Nursing Home in Columbia.
She was born on December 8, 1922 in Newberry, the daughter of the late John Harrison and Mamie Swittenberg Summer.
Mrs. Ragland was an honor graduate of Newberry College, a piano teacher, and the author of numerous published poems and articles. She served on the Newberry Community Hall Commission and the Newberry Regional Library Board. She was co-founder, with the late Mrs. Taddy Buddin, of the Newberry Newcomers Club, and she remained an advisor to this group for many years. In April 2001, both ladies were recognized by the Mayor and City Council of Newberry and the S.C. House of Representatives for 40 years of service. She was an active member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Charles Emerson Ragland; children and spouses Charles E. Ragland, Jr. of Selinsgrove, PA, John Harrison and Mary Helen Ragland of Piedmont, Kathryn Ragland and Allan Gilbert of Hopkins, Christopher R. and Julie Ragland of Fountain Inn; grandchildren Will Ragland, Rebecca Ragland, Marianne Gilbert Nicolau and husband Gilbert Nicolau, David Gilbert,
Harrison Gilbert, Ben Ragland, Susannah Ragland, and Christian Ragland; and one great-grandson, Parker L. Nicolau. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted on Friday, August 1 at 11:00 am at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 1515 Boundary St., Newberry, by the Rev. Caldwell Day.
Visitation was held on Thursday from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry.
The family suggests that memorials be sent to the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, PO Box 382, Newberry, SC 29108 or to the Newberry Regional Library Board, 1300 Friend St., Newberry, SC 29108.

Robert "Bob" Kennerley
July 25, 2008

Robert “Bob” Kennerley, 84, of 1975 Mt. Bethel Garmany Road, died Friday, July 25, 2008 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
He was born on Jan. 31, 1924 in Wilmington, DE, the son of the late Francis John and Ethel Leitzsey Kennerley. He was a Navy veteran of WW II. He was the owner and manager of Pinehaven Kennels and was retired from Sam Solomon. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Civitan Club.
Mr. Kennerley is survived by his daughter and granddaughter, Roberta “Robin” Kennerley and Leitzsey Catherine Kennerley of the home; his son, Francis John Kennerley and wife Carol of Indianapolis, IN; a sister Frances K. Smith of Augusta; grandchildren, Heather and Dave Appleby and Tammi and Stephen Wess; 7 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews, Robert and Marsha Smith, Diane and Buck Weber, Ralph and Barbara Jones and Linda and Jim Hudson; and a number of great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Ethel Leitzsey Kennerley; 2 sisters, Mary Catherine Kennerley and Beatrice Davis; and his beloved Cognac.
Funeral services with military rites were conducted at 2 P.M. Sunday at the Whitaker Funeral Home Chapel by Stephen Wess. Interment was in Rosemont Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 P.M, Saturday, at Whitaker Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Mary Catherine Reynolds, Michael Cleghorn, Stanley Harris, Margaret Boozer, Linda Corley, Janice Smith, Darlene Werts, Debra Crumpton, Debra Long, and Sandra Smith.
Memorials may be made to Newberry County Animal Care and Control, 11494 SC Highway 34, Newberry, SC, 29108.

Rev. Wilbur Dean Miller
July 13, 2008

The Rev. Wilbur Dean Miller, 79, 1801 Greencroft Blvd., Goshen, IN, died Sunday at 7:15 p.m. at Greencroft Healthcare.
He was born Feb. 23, 1929, to Warren and Viola M. (Miller) Miller, in Millersburg.
He attended Goshen College for three years and Lutheran Theological Seminary for three years. He worked at Heine Hardware, which is now John Hall’s Hardware, Goshen.
He first pastored in Spencerville, then at St. Phillip's Lutehran Church in Newberry, where after retirement, he served as assistant pastor. He was a member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church, Lexington, S.C. After moving back to Goshen, he became active at First English Lutheran Church, Goshen.
He married Joann (Heine) Miller, May 25, 1952. She survives.
Also surviving are his son, Stewart C. Miller, Houston, Texas ; and his daughter, Kathy (LaVern) Nisley, Goshen; three sisters, Luella Eash, Goshen, Mary (John) Culp, Hesston, Kan., and Miriam (Dilman) Black, Millersburg; two brothers, Ronald Miller and Leroy (Tawney) Miller, both of Goshen; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral service was conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday The Rev. Gene Hollingsworth of First English Lutheran Church lead the service.
Burial was in Violett Cemetery, Goshen.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First English Lutheran Church.

Alda Long Richardson
July 10, 2008

Alda Long Richardson, 90, formerly of 5560 US Highway 76, Prosperity, died Thursday July 10, 2008 at J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home.
Mrs. Richardson was born on January 21, 1918 in Prosperity, a daughter of the late James A. and Alma Shealy Long. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Ladies Bible Class. She was a former member of the Ladies Aid Circle and the church choir and also had served as a Sunday School teacher. She was a former employee of G. E. in Irmo and was a retired employee of C. W. Anderson in Prosperity.
Mrs. Richardson was married for 66 years to the late Horace C. Richardson. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, H. Wayne and Kay Richardson of Little Mountain; two granddaughters, Susan Richardson Fulmer and Melanie Richardson Stone both of Prosperity; and two great-grandchildren, Erica Lynn Stone and Corey Edward Stone. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Retha L. Richardson.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 PM, Friday, July 11, 2008 at St. Paul Lutheran Church by the Rev. Brent Nichols. Interment did follow in the church cemetery.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2496 SC Highway 773, Pomaria, SC 29126 or the Little Mountain Rescue Squad, 234 Depot St., Little Mountain, SC 29075.
Pallbearers were John Long, Ray Long, Voight Counts, L.J. Long, Marvin Hawkins, Kenny Long, Don Long, Roger Long, and Mark Gosnell.

David Craft, Jr.
June 30, 2008

David Craft, Jr., 47, of 4647 Hwy 34, Pomaria died Monday, June 30, 2008 in Hilton Head.
He was born on February 26, 1961 to the late David Craft and Bobbie Jean Knight Craft. He was a carpenter by trade.
Mr. Craft is survived by three sisters, Deborah Evans of Blythewood, Carolyn Wicker of Newberry and Vicky Panter of Greenwood and a brother, Brian Craft of Winnsboro. He was predeceased by a brother, Steven Craft.
A celebration of his life was conducted Thursday at 6:00 PM at the residence of his sister, Carolyn Wicker, 7641 Jollystreet Road, Newberry.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Helen Beebe, 181 Trailers Trail, Leesville, SC 2970.
