E. Steve Vurnakes
Greenville

Emmanuel Steve Vurnakes, 82, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died peacefully in his sleep Friday, March 31, 2006.

Born on Oct. 6, 1923, in Roanoke, Virginia, he was the son of the late Stavro and Helen Vurnakes. A longtime resident of Greenville, Mr. Vurnakes was the owner of Steve's Auto Service for over 30 years, until his retirement at age 70. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II.

He was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral for over 50 years, and served his church in many areas, including several years as Director of the Sunday School program.

Mr. Vurnakes is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Thalia Siachos Vurnakes; and their two fortunate daughters, Valerie Bickley and husband, John, and Stephanie McCrary, all of Greenville. And "papou and yia-yia's" four grandchildren, Adrienne and Emily McCrary and Alex and Max Bickley. Also surviving are two sisters, Alexandra Karavedas of Baltimore, Md., and Bertha Christofis of Roanoke, Va.; as well as several nieces and nephews and their families.

He is predeceased by two sisters and two brothers, Sophie Haloulos, Stella Sarandos, George Vurnakes and Peter Vurnakes.

Visitation will be held today, April 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mackey Mortuary, Century Drive, with the Trisagion service at 7 p.m conducted by Father Tom Pistolis. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral with burial immediately following at Woodlawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. George Building Fund, 406 North Academy Street, Greenville, SC 29601.

Donald Billy Alexander
Greenville

Donald Billy "Don" Alexander, 71, of 16 2nd Avenue Judson, died Tuesday, May 16, 2006, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Piedmont, he was a son of the late Dewey T. and Minnie Mae Taylor Alexander.

Mr. Alexander retired from Judson Mill and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are two daughters, Susan Brown of Piedmont and Cynthia Lorie Strickland of Greenville; a son, Tony Alexander of Greenville; a sister, Gail Guthrie of Greenville; three brothers, Robert, Kenneth, and Richard Alexander, all of Greenville; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He is predeceased by a son, Michael Joe Alexander.

Services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest, with visitation from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., prior to the service. Burial will be at Graceland cemetery, West.

The family is at their respective homes.

Lillian Lambert Allen
Greenville

Mrs. Lillian Lambert Allen, of 5 Hiawatha Drive, Greenville, S.C., died Monday, May 15, 2006.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Dwight "Sunshine" Allen.

Mrs. Allen was born in Langley, S.C., to the late Lindsey and Alice Jenkins Lambert. Lillian lived in Greenville since 1965 and was a member of St. Francis Episcopal Church.

Mrs. Allen is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Susan and Jim Morano of Somerset, N.J., and Pat and Larry Ashmore Greenville, S.C.; sisters-in-law, Mildred Lambert of Langley, S.C., and Ruth "Tiny" Bowers of Columbia, S.C.; nephews, David Bowers, Stanley Cole, and Homer Naylor; nieces, Harriet Leonard, Tenn., and Julie Baker Pendleton, Martinez, Ga.; five grandchildren, Keena York (Timothy), James Morano Jr. (Jessica), Kate Pendleton, Buck Pendleton and Daniel Pendleton; and a great-granddaughter, Claire Isabella Morano.

Graveside funeral services will be Friday at noon in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Graniteville, S.C.

Friends may call this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hatcher Funeral Home, U.S. Highway U.S. No. 1, Langley, S.C.

Hannah Arve
Walhalla

Hannah Satterfield Lee Arve, 98, of 115 Chalmers Mountain Road, Walhalla, S.C., died Tuesday, May 16, 2006, at her residence.

Mrs. Arve was twice married , first to the late James "Jim" Lee and second, to the late William Roy Arve.

A native of Oconee County, Mrs. Arve was the daughter of the late John Benson and Mary Lou Cowan Satterfield. She was a retired employee of Kendall Company and was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Arve is survived by a son, Hoyt Lee and wife, Marian, of Walhalla, S.C.; a daughter, Doris "Dot" Childs of Greenville, S.C.; stepsons, Harold Arve of North Carolina, and Charles Arve of North Carolina; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husbands and parents, a son, Deck Lee, predeceased Mrs. Arve.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, May 19, 2006, in the Davenport Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening, May 18, 2006, at Davenport Funeral Home.

Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to the Bethel Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 580 Bethel Church Road, Walhalla, SC 29691.

The family is at the residence of son Hoyt Lee, 115 Chalmers Mountain Road, Walhalla, S.C.

Davenport Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Richard T. Brassell Sr.
Greenville

Richard T. Brassell, 94, former resident of Teal Trail, Greenville, S.C., died Sunday, May 14, 2006, in Conway, Ark.

Born in Pine Bluff, Ark., Feb. 20, 1912, Mr. Brassell spent the early part of his life in Pine Bluff and Mobile, Ala. He graduated from Spring Hill College, Mobile, Ala., where he was captain of the football team.

Mr. Brassell became a pulpwood dealer in Georgia in the mid-30's and continued in that profession until he and his family moved to Greenville, S.C., in 1956. In Greenville, he was a real estate agent and later became owner of Keowee Toxaway Sport Center in Sunset, S.C.

Mr. Brassell was a Tennessee Walking Horse Judge for many years and was a Past President of the Greenville Horse Show.

He was a member of Pendleton Street Baptist Church for over 50 years, where he served as a Deacon and was a member of the Lawton Bible Class.

He was predeceased by his wife, Marguerite Hinson Brassell; and a son-in-law, Samuel Driggers.

Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Nancy Brassell of Pickens, S.C.; a daughter, Virginia B. Driggers of Conway, Ark.; two grandsons, Jason Driggers and wife, Brooke, and Daniel Driggers and wife, Kim; and two beloved great-grandchildren, Madyson Driggers and Samuel Driggers

Services will be conducted Friday, May 19, 2006, at 3 p.m. at The Mackey Mortuary, with Rev. Marty Price officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Friday from 2 to 3 p.m. at the mortuary.

Carey D. Pittman Bryant
Travelers Rest

Carey Dawn Pittman Bryant, 26, of Travelers Rest, died May 15, 2006, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Greenville County, she was the daughter of Peggy Shelton and the late Nathan Pittman. She was of Baptist Faith.

Surviving, in addition to her mother, are a daughter, Courtney Nicole Bryant of Williamston; sons, Christopher Thomas Bryant and Jeremy Thomas Bryant, both of Williamston; and sisters, Mekeda Guzman of Taylors and Allison McCarson of Travelers Rest.

Graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Garden of Memories. Burial will follow.

The family will receive friends following the service at Garden of Memories.

The family will be at their respective homes.

Cox Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Zeletta G. Cantor
Greenville

Zeletta Goodman "Toots" Cantor, formerly of Richmond, Va., died Wednesday, May 17, 2006, at Magnolia Place of Greenville.

Survived by two sons, Josef Cantor of Josef & Stephen of Greenville, S.C., and Richard Cantor of Bentonville, Ark. Also her grand-dog, Chivas; and her very special person in her life, Dennis Ligon of Greenville, S.C.

Bethel Edens
Greenville

Bethel M. Nations Edens, 95, formerly of White Horse Road, wife of the late Robert Elmer Edens, and affectionately known as "Me-ma, " went to be with the Lord Tuesday, May 16, 2006.

Born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late Thomas Horton and Minnie Estelle Duckworth Nations, Mrs. Edens retired from National Linen Corp., after more than 20 years of service. She was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are a sister, Pheron Holliday of Pickens; a grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Robbie and Faye Edens of Piedmont; four great-grandchildren, Cameron, Lindsey, Christi and Katherine; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Friday at Fairview Baptist Church cemetery in Norris, with Rev. Engrum Johnson officiating.

The family is at the home of Robbie and Faye Edens, 403 Bonanza Circle, Piedmont, SC 29673.

Robinson Funeral Home-Powdersville Road, Easley, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Rev. William T. Ford
West Pelzer

The Rev. William Thomas Ford, 81, husband of Nearldine McDonald Ford, of 17 Burkett St., died Wednesday, May 17, 2006, at his home.

Born in Pelzer, he was a son of the late Rufus Hulan and Zura Josephine Evans Ford. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a retired Church of God of Prophecy minister having served Camp Oak in Salem, Jones Chapel, Honea Path, Mt. Pisgah, Liberty and Conestee, and was a member of the West Pelzer Church of God of Prophecy.

In addition to his wife of the home, he is survived by daughter, Theresa Kim Moore of West Pelzer; sons, the Rev. William Michael Ford of Calhoun Falls and Thomas Keith Ford of Easley; brothers, John Hulan Ford of West Pelzer and George David Ford of Williamston; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a sister, Lucille Cooley; and a granddaughter, Alecia Jill Ford.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the West Pelzer Church of God of Prophecy, with the Revs. Donnie Bell, Julian Galloway, and William Shepard officiating. Burial will follow in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

The family is at the home, and will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.
