Mrs. Etta Irene Wheeler Bowers, 86, wife of William Alton Bowers of Lancaster passed away Sunday, May 22, 2011 at White Oak Manor. She was born February 26, 1925 in Lancaster, a daughter of the late Grover Cleveland Wheeler and Effie Hammond Wheeler. Mrs. Bowers was a member of Hyde Park Baptist Church. She was a Loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Sister. She had retired from Springs Industries following thirty seven years of service. She loved her Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren most of all. An excellent cook, Mrs. Bowers was well known for making banana pudding.

A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Bowers will be held Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at 2:00 pm at the Chapel of Lancaster Funeral Home with the Rev. Donald Waldrop officiating. Burial will be in the Lancaster Memorial Park.

Mrs. Bowers is survived by her husband, Alton Bowers; a son, Morrison Kelly Hunter and his wife Carolyn of Lancaster; two daughters, Elaine H. “Sis” Melton and her late husband Franklin and Darlene H. Helms and her husband Billy all of Lancaster; a brother, William Walter Wheeler of Lancaster; seven grandchildren, Donnie Hunter, Shonda Hunter Carlton, Ricky Melton, Michael Melton, Brian Helms, David Melton and Stacey Helms Kirkley; and five great grandchildren, Sam Ghent, Hanna Carlton, Breana Helms, Kaitlyn Melton, Tyler Melton and Camri Carlton. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert Wheeler, James Wheeler, and Charles Wheeler; and three sisters, Elva Wheeler, Pat Wheeler and Iva Lee Criminger.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday, May 23, 2011 at Lancaster Funeral Home and other times at the home, 511 Sumter Street, Lancaster.

Mr. Robert Lewis Melton, 60, of Lancaster passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at Springs Memorial Hospital. He was born August 26, 1950 in Lancaster, a son of Jammie Louise Donahue Melton and the late Floyd Franklin Melton. Mr. Melton was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Jefferson. He loved his family and friends and was a fan of NASCAR Racing. A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Melton will be held Friday, May 27, 2011 at 11 am at Lancaster Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Trent McLaughlin officiating. Burial will be in the Lancaster Memorial Park.

Mr. Melton is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Melton of Lancaster; his mother, Jammie Louise Donahue Melton of Lancaster; two brothers, Jimmy Melton and his wife Ellen, and Donald Melton and his wife Laticia, all of Lancaster; a sister, Nancy Bowers and her husband John Wayne of Heath Springs; 15 nephews and eight nieces. Mr. Melton was preceded in death by a brother, Franklin Melton.

Mr. William James Boone, 88, of Lancaster passed away Sunday, May 8, 2011 at Springs Memorial Hospital. He was born July 2, 1922 in Andrews, a son of the late James Robert Boone and Fannie Williams Boone. He was a World War Two US Army Veteran and attended Friendship Baptist Church.

A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Boone will be held Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at 3:00 pm at the graveside at Antioch Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Boone officiating.

Mr. Boone is survived by three sons, Robert “Bob” Boone and his wife Peggy, Jimmy Boone all of Lancaster and Donnie Boone and his wife Harriett of Blackstock; four daughters, Mary Lee Page and her husband Clifford, Kay Deese and her husband Jeff all of Pageland, Debra Sue Snipes and her husband Gene of Lancaster, and Roseann Tally and her husband Don of Fairfax, Virginia; twenty grandchildren; forty one great grandchildren; and 22 great great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday, May 9, 2011 at Lancaster Funeral Home and other times at the home of Sue and Gene Snipes, 827 Union Church Road, Lancaster.

Ms. Josephine “Josie” Ivey Jefferson, 59, of Lancaster went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 13, 2011. She was born December 28, 1951 in Lancaster, a daughter of the late Rube Lee Ivey and Clatie Threatt Ivey.

A service to celebrate the life of Ms. Jefferson will be held Monday, May 16, 2011 at 2 pm at Lancaster Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Edwin Bagley officiating. Burial will be in the Rich Hill Baptist Church cemetery.

Ms. Jefferson is survived by a son, Michael “Mike” Stacks and his wife Kristin of Rock Hill; two daughters, Cindy Mosier and her husband Ronnie of Lancaster and Janet Stacks and her husband David Pressley of Richburg; a brother, Charles Ivey of Lancaster; two sisters, Monnie Sue Kimmer of Heath Springs and Linda Kay Reiley of Lancaster; and eight grandchildren. She is preceded in death by a brother, Carl Lee Ivey and two sisters, Mildred Joyce Ivey Mangum and Betty Maxine Ivey Lane.

Mrs. Phyllis Kennington Wright, 51, of Lancaster passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at her home. She was born June 20, 1959 in Monroe, NC, a daughter of the late Rodney Kennington and Mildred Criminger Kennington. Mrs. Wright enjoyed hunting and fishing.

A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Wright will be held Friday, May 27, 2011 at 3:00 pm at the Chapel of Lancaster Funeral Home with the Rev. Randy Mellichamp officiating. Burial will be in the Kershaw City cemetery.

Mrs. Wright is survived by her husband, Jimmy Wright; a son, Bobo Wright and his wife Tina of Lancaster; three daughters, Dana Elliott and her husband Brandon, Jennifer Helms and Kala Pate and her husband Ryan all of Lancaster; two sisters, Brenda Murphy and her husband Harold of Rock Hill and Norma Faile of Lancaster; and six grandchildren, Matthew, Skylar, Raegan, Hunter, Riley, Jenson, and Payton.

Mrs. Brenda Turner Byrd, 65, of Kershaw passed away Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at Springs Memorial Hospital. She was born November 22, 1945 in Richburg, a daughter of the late Albert Turner and Inez Hinnant Duren and step-father, James Hall Duren. She was a former member of Second Baptist Church in Kershaw. Mrs. Byrd was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who loved working with her flowers, spending time with her family and enjoyed traveling to the mountains. She was retired from Springs Industries after 34 years of service.

A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Byrd will be held Saturday, May 28, 2011 at noon at Lancaster Funeral Home with the Rev. Frankie Melton officiating. Burial will be in the Kershaw City cemetery.

Mrs. Byrd is survived by her husband, Joseph W. Byrd of Kershaw; a son, Joseph Byrd, Jr. and his wife Debbie of Hartsville; two daughters, Donna Jones and her friend Scottie Strait of Lancaster and Rhonda B. Dowdy of Kershaw; six grandchildren, Denise Kennington, Ashley Roberts, Joseph Byrd, III, Kareena Byrd, Phillip Byrd and Brandon Byrd; and six great-grandchildren.

Mr. Bobby Lee Byrdic, 80, of Lancaster passed away Thursday, May 26, 2011 at Springs Memorial Hospital. He was born September 18, 1930 in Kingstree, SC, a son of the late William Daniel Byrdic and Bernice Davis Byrdic. He was a member of Lynnwood United Methodist Church. Mr. Byrdic enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by three sons, William Daniel Byrdic, Alfred Lee Byrdic, and Edward Dennis Byrdic and; four brothers, Henry Byrdic, Clyde Byrdic, Hubert Byrdic, Rubert Byrdic, Edwin Byrdic and Tom Byrdic; and a grandson, Joseph D. Hilton, Jr.

(Died July 11, 2011)

Dr. Ira Jones Adams, 85, of Lancaster passed away Monday, July 11, 2011 at his office. He was born March 10, 1926 in Lancaster, a son of the late John A. and Ruth Jones Adams. Dr. Adams was a lifetime member of Pleasant Plain Baptist Church and a member of Abney Masonic Lodge #211. He was a US Army Air Force World War II Veteran and a US Navy Veteran in Korea. Dr. Adams operated his dental practice for over 57 years in Lancaster. He loved his family and being in the outdoors, especially garden, boxwoods, and flowers. Dr. Adams graduated from Kershaw High School, Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, NC, Clemson College in Clemson, SC and Baltimore Dental School in Baltimore, Maryland.

A service to celebrate the life of Dr. Adams will be held Thursday, July 14, 2011 at 11 am at the Lancaster Funeral Home - Chapel with the Rev. Hugh McKinney officiating. Burial will be in the Kershaw City cemetery.

Dr. Adams is survived by a brother, Fred D. Adams of Kershaw; a sister, Mary Ruth Adams of Kershaw; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Dr. Adams was preceded in death by brothers, E. Randolph Adams, John Thomas Adams and Connie R. Adams and sisters, Viola A. Harrelson, Annette A. Cauthen, Ann A. Horton and Frances J. Adams.

Josephine C. Catoe
(Died July 12, 2011)

Mrs. Josephine C. Catoe, widow of the late John Francis “Bigum” Catoe, 76, of Lancaster passed away Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at Springs Memorial Hospital. She was born June 1, 1935 in Lancaster, a daughter of the late Minor Lewis and Daisy Barrett Catoe. Mrs. Catoe was a member of Catawba Baptist Church. She was an active individual who loved spending time with family and friends. Mrs. Catoe enjoyed traveling throughout the United States on bus tours, especially the old west. She was an employee of the A & P Grocery for 25 years and she later worked with young children at Colonial Child Care. At home, she loved spending time tending the yard and playing with her dachshund, Chewie. Mrs. Catoe always enjoyed being a part of the Golden Believers Senior Citizens Group at Catawba Baptist Church.

A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Catoe will be held Friday, July 15, 2011 at 2 pm at Catawba Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Parker officiating. Burial will be in the Lancaster Memorial Park.

Mrs. Catoe is survived by two daughters, Barbara Catoe Truesdale of Lancaster and Debra Catoe (Edward) Allen of St. Matthews, SC; two sisters, Margaret Catoe Baker and Kay Catoe Bradley; and a grandchild, Robert (Jill) Truesdale.

He was born October 11, 1921 in Florence, a son of the late Charlie Cooper, Sr. and Ella Levelle Cambelle Cooper. He was retired from Dickerson Construction Company and had worked part time at Cauthen Motors.

Mr. Cooper is survived by his wife, Elsie Cooper of Lancaster; a son, James Cooper, Jr. of Pamplico; two daughters, Janet C. Broughton and her husband, Jason of Lancaster and Bobbie Jean Ard and her husband, Lou of Pamplico; a step-daughter, Wanda Poston of Lancaster; a brother, Jethro Cooper and his wife, Edna of Pamplico; 14 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; and several great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Levelle Cooper Fennell.

Mrs. Brenda Faile Rollins, 63, of Lancaster passed away Monday, July 18, 2011 at Springs Memorial Hospital. She was born July 2, 1948, in Jefferson, a daughter of the late Charlie Minton Faile and Lucy Elizabeth Rollings Faile. She was a member of the Shiloh A.R.P. Church and a member of the Nannie Cousar Circle. Mrs. Rollins worked for Springs Industries for 40 years. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Shiloh-Zion Volunteer Fire Department. Mrs. Rollins was also a volunteer for HOPE of Lancaster. A funeral service for Mrs. Rollins will be held Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at 11 am at Shiloh A.R.P. Church with the Rev. Mark Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Shiloh A.R.P. Church cemetery.

Mrs. Rollins is survived by her husband, John P. Rollins of Lancaster; two sons, Mark Rollins and his wife, Destiny and Brett Rollins, both of Lancaster; a brother, Charles Faile and his wife, Jean of Lancaster; a sister, Betty Sue Knight of Lancaster; and three precious granddaughters, Gracie, April, and Abigaile. In addition to Brenda’s many beloved friends and family members, she leaves behind two four legged children, Sparky and Yayo. She was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Thomas Faile.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at Lancaster Funeral Home and other times at the home, 1298 Old Pardue Road, Lancaster.
