Services for Alma McNeil Jackson were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, in New Providence Baptist Church, Mechanicsville, with Rev. J. P. Poole, officiating and Rev. Coleman Cannon, pastor. Burial was in the Round O Church cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home Inc. of Darlington. Mrs. Jackson died Wednes-day, Aug. 2, in a Florence nursing home after an extended illness. She was born in Darling-ton County, a daughter of the late John and Lottie Meggs McNeil. She was a widow of Samuel Jackson. She attended Darlington County public schools. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Ida Mae Sawyer of Darlington; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Mary (Bubba) Jackson of Baltimore, Md. and Mrs. Mary “Miss” Jackson Harrison of Syracuse, N.Y and several devoted nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

TROY BROADNAX

Graveside services for Troy Broadnax were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, in Florence National cemetery with Rev. J. W. Kelley, officiating, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home Inc. of Darlington. Mr. Broadnax, 75, died Thursday, Aug. 3, in a local hospital after an illness. He was born in Raiford, N.C., a son of the late Anderson and Letha Delaine Broadnax. He was educated in Darlington County public schools. At an early age he joined Palmetto Baptist Church. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1943-1956 and was honorably discharged. Survivors include his brother, Sam (Maybell) Broadnax of Darlington; aunts and uncles of North Carolina; nieces, nephews and his adopted family of Medford Place.

HARRIET L. McCOWN

Services for Harriet Latta Haun McCown, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, in First Baptist Church with burial following in Elim Baptist Church, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home of Florence. Memorials may be made to Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, c/o First Baptist Church, 300 S. Irby Street, Florence, S.C. 29501; or to International Myeloma Foundation, 2129 Stanley Hills Drive., Los Angeles, Calif. 90046. Mrs. McCown, wife of Charles Dusenbury McCown, died Monday, Aug. 7, at her home. She was born on July 18, 1933, in Hartsville, a daughter of the late Frances Latta Haun and August John Haun. She was predeceased by a daughter, Fran McCown, and a sister, Frances Haun Huggins. She was a 1954 cum laude graduate of Coker College. She was an active member of First Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. Survivors include her sons, Charles Dusenbury “Chad” McCown II, of Atlanta, Ga., Dr. John Samuel “Sam” McCown and daughter-in-law, Dr. Heather Funke McCown of Florence; a grandson, John Samuel McCown Jr. of Florence; and a sister, Johanna Haun Morrison of Marion.

ANNIE BULLINGTON

Graveside services for Annie Segars Bullington, 83, will be held at 10 a.m. this morning, Aug. 9, 2000, in Magnolia cemetery with Rev. Tom Swilley officiating, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Mrs. Bullington died Monday, Aug. 7. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Donaldson and Sudie Frances Segars. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. Mrs. Bullington was a retired nurse from Byerly Hospital with 35 years of service. Surviving are her husband, Luther V. Bullington of Hartsville; a son, Paul (Doris) Byrd; two daughters, Susan (Randy) Atkinson and Ann Gay and J.C. Till of Orangeburg; a sister, Edna Cohen of Orangeburg; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband, Grove C. Byrd.

BOBBY L. PERKINS

Services for Bobby Perkins, 65, were held Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000 at 3 p.m. in the Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home Chapel. Internment followed at Florence Memorial Gardens directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home. Mr. Perkins died Friday, Aug. 4, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Darlington County and was the son of Flossie Mae Rhodes and the late Willie J. Perkins. He was a member of the First Freewill Baptist Bible Church of Darlington. Mr. Perkins loved animals and was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, and racing. Survivors include his wife, Lydia C. Perkins, of the home; two sons, Boby L. Perkins, Jr, and Jolly L. Perkins, both of Darlington; one daughter, Thelma Marie Hammond of Calif.; four brothers, Bill Perkins and Benny Perkins of Darlington, Hoyt Perkins, and Harry Perkins of Florence and eight grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Billie Hardee Home for Boys, PO Box 617, Darlington or to the Wildlife Federation.

HOLLIS INGRAM

Services for Hollis H. Ingram, 80, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000 at New Providence Baptist Church. The Rev. Dale Broadway officiated with burial in church cemetary directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family received friends Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to New Providence Baptist Church, 1884 Antioch Rd., Hartsville, S.C. 29550. Mr. Ingram died Friday Aug. 4. Born in Darlington County, S.C., he was a son of the late William Samuel and Carrie Edwards Ingram. He was a member of New Providence Baptist Church and was a retired truck driver and farmer. Surviving are his spouse, Helen Dougherty Ingram of Hartsville, S.C.; daughters and sons-in-law, Zeta and Noel Johnson of Hartsville, S.C., Delenc and John Campbell of Hartsville, S.C., Jean and Lee Bristow of Greenville, S.C.; step-daughter and spouse, Lynn and Don Newsome; step-son and spouse, William and Kim Weaver, all of Hartsville; sisters and brother-in-law, Juanita Adams, Merrie Byrd, Jewel and Jimmy Millen, all of Hartsville, S.C.; grandchildren and their spouses, Mark Johnson, Bryan and Misty Campbell, Denise and John Owen, Susan Campbell, Vickie and Stevie King; step-grandchildren, Lad Weaver, Jenny Smith; step-great grandchild, Austin Smith. He was predeceased by two bothers, Rembert Ingram and Ems Ingram, and a sister, Ada Grace Watford.

STEPHINAL WITHERSPOON

Services for Stephinal (Sted) Witherspoon, 47, were 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, in Nazareth Apostolic Church with burial in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home. Ms. Witherspoon died Wednesday, Aug. 2, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of Levern Wheeler Sr. and the late Magdeline McCray Witherspoon. She was a graduate of Butler High School Class of 1972. She leaves to cherish her most precious memories her father, Levern Wheeler; three daughters, Michelle Withers-poon, Shonta Witherspoon and Latoya Witherspoon, all of Hartsville; two sons, Stephen Lunnor and Christopher Lunnor, of Hartsville; two sisters, Linda Witherspoon and Brenda Witherspoon; three brothers, Elder Jerry (Dorothy) Witherspoon, Ricky Witherspoon and Levern Wheeler, all of Hartsville; three grandchildren, Quadeshia Witherspoon, Natayia Witherspoon and Zanobia Ross, all of Hartsville; two grandsons, Phozarik Witherspoon and Jokhil Ross, both of Hartsville; and a host of other close relatives and friends.

ELEASE S. ALFORD

Services for Elease (James) Alford, of Lamar, were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7, 2000 in Emmanuel Community Church with pastor, Dr. Ralph Singleton, officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home of Lamar. Mrs. Alford was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late James and Annie Bell Enoch Slater. She attended Enoch Hill public school and was a member of Emmanuel Community Church, formerly Emmanuel AME Church for 40 years. She served on the Stewardess Board, Senior Choir Missionary Board as treasurer and the Usher Board. Mrs. Alford was formerly employed by Hanes Hosiery of Hartsville and with several local hospitals in the Pee Dee Area. In recent years, she was a site manager at her home, for the USDA free breakfast and lunch summer program. She is survived by six children, five daughters, Mary Ellen Brown of New York, N.Y., Susan D.Richard and Creola James, both of Queens, N.Y., Nora L. Green of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Anne A. Marshall of Columbia; one son, Henry James Alford Jr. of New York, N.Y; three sisters, Cora L. Burris of Hartsville, Fannie L. Mack of Long Island, N.Y. and Lerlene Martin of Columbia; eight brothers, Willie Slater of Paterson, N.J., James L.Slater of Tifton, N.J., Charles Slater of Brooklyn, N.Y., William Slater, Rudolph Slater, Eugene Slater, Larry Slater and Arthur Slater, all of Columbia; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

MARGARET PARKER

Services for Margaret Letha Outlaw Parker, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Aug. 9, 2000, at Middendorf Chruch of the Living God with interment in Weilk Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery in Hartsville, directed by Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home of Chesterfield. Ms. Parker died Wednesday, Aug. 7. Born in was born in Patrick, she was the daughter of the late William Thomas and Emma Polson Outlaw. She was a homemaker. Survivors are two sisters, Alma Crowley and Estelle Barmer of Hartsville; and nieces and nephews.

POLLY BOYKIN

Services for Polly Boykin, 73, of Bishopville, were held at 4 p.m. at Harmony Baptist Church with the Rev. Carl Watts, officiating. Burial was in Bethany cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home, Bishopville Chapel. Memorials may be made to Harmony Baptist Church Piano Fund. Mrs. Boykin was born in Lee County, a daughter of the late Willie Ervin and Anna Galloway Outlaw. She was an active member of Harmony Baptist Church. Surviving are one son, Tommy Boykin of Bishopville; four granddaughters, Lori (Johnny) Barfield and Shannon (Curtis) Outlaw, both of Hartsville, Christy (Billy) Morris and Susan (Kirby) Wayne, both of McBee; four great-granddaughters, Courtney Morris and Anna Catherine Wayne, both of McBee; two great-grandsons, Justin Barfield and Zachary Outlaw, both of Hartsville; sister and brother-in-law, Doris Ann (James) Wilds of Bishopville; and a brother and sister-in-law, James Sidney (Celeste) Outlaw of Bishopville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Odell Boykin and two brothers, Tom W. and Bill Outlaw.

NANCY HOFFMAN

Services for Nancy Vinson Sparrow Hoffman, 65, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Aug. 4, 2000, from the chapel of Norton Funeral Home with the Rev. L. Z. Freeman and Rev. Hazel Mixon, officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia cemetery. Mrs. Hoffman was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Calvin Vinson and Lila Mae Mixon Segars. She was a member of Mission For Christ Church. Surviving are her husband, Jake Hoffman of Hartsville; two sons, James L. Sparrow Jr. of Darlington and Richard David Sparrow of Pawley’s Island; seven sisters, Annette Tiller, Shirley Davis, Barbara Reynolds, Lucille Hall, Mary Alice Hall, all of Hartsville, Carolyn Steen and Ermine Gainey, both of Patrick; three brothers, Bozie Vinson, Johnny and James Segars, all of Hartsville; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

LILA H. HILL

Funeral services Lila Hendrix Hill, 88, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at Fourth Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Hood officiating with burial in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight, Aug. 4. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, Box 7044, Columbia, S.C. 29202 or a charity of your choice. Mrs. Hill, widow of Coyt Gandy and Lawson Hill, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000. Born in Fairmont, N.C., she was a daughter of the late W. C. and Ina Hendrix Culley. She was a member of Fourth Street Baptist Church and was a worker in the nursery department for many years. She was retired from the Hartsville Cotton Mill with 32 years of service. Surviving are her three sons and daughters-in-law, J. W. (Jean) Gandy of Hartsville, Grady E. (Betty) Gandy of Bennettsville and Thomas M. “Sara” Gandy of Florence; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

HUBERT GRIGGS

Services for Hubert Eugene Griggs, Jr., 67, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dr. Ross Johns officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Brevard Museum in Cocoa, Fla. Mr. Griggs died Thursday, Aug. 3. Born in Gainesville, Fla., he was a son of the late Hubert Eugene and Carol Hamil Griggs Sr. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cocoa, Fla. He was a graduate of Southern University of Lakeland, Fla. and did graduate work at Stetson University. After a career in newspaper reporting and editing with the Cocoa Tribune and Orlando Sentinel, he became a public information writer with NASA and editor of NASA’S “Spaceport News.” Surviving are his wife, Anne Carlisle Griggs of Winterville, Ga.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Eugene Carlisle (Bonnie) Griggs of Atlanta, Ga., Mitchell Lee (Joanne) Griggs of Lilburn, Ga.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Anne (Dennis) Swank of Dade City, Fla., Teresa (Ross) Johns of Bogart, Ga., 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Andrew Griggs.

DR. HARRY ALLEN JR.

Memorial service for Dr. Harry S. Allen Jr., 79, were 11 a.m. Saturday, July 29, 2000 at First Presbyterian Church, Florence. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mercy Medicine, a division of Lighthouse Ministries or the Florence YMCA, directed by Cain-Poston Funeral Home of Florence. Dr. Allen died Thursday, July 27, at McLeod Regional Medical Center. Born June 28, 1921 in Wilmington, N.C., he was the son of the late Gladys Mitchell and Harry Scholar Allen Sr. Dr. Allen was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as deacon, elder, and Sunday School teacher and was former chairman of the Board of Deacons. He was a 1939 graduate of Florence High School; received his bachelor of science, Davidson College, Davidson, N.C.; Doctor of Medicine, Duke University Medical School, 1946, Durham, N.C.; Rotating Internship, Baltimore City Hospital, 1954-1985, Florence, S.C. at Drs. Hicks & Allen; Medical Practice, Pee Dee Internal Medicine Associates, PA, 1985 to Nov. 1, 1997, Florence. He was a member of the Florence Kiwanis Club, 1954-1987; president Kiwanis Club, 1963; Lieutenant Governor, Carolina’s District, Kiwanis International, 1966-1967; Past member, Board of Directors, Florence County Heart Association; past member Board of Directors, Florence YMCA; founder of YMCA and McLeod Regional Medical Center Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, 1980. He was the recipient, Certificated for Outstanding Community Service from Pee Dee AHEC, 1981; and recipient, Distinguished Program Service Award, Southeast Region, YMCA, 1982. Dr. Allen was also member and past chief of medicine and chief of staff, Bruce Hospital Systems, Florence; past assistant chief of staff, McLeod Regional Medical Center and Florence General Hospital. He was a member of the Florence County Medical Society, American Medical and South Carolina Medical Associations. He is survived by his wife, Alberta T. Allen of the home; four sons, Dr. Harry S. (Wanda) Allen III and David M. Allen, of Florence, Paul G. Allen of Vero Beach, Fla. and John K. (Kaye) Allen of Hartsville; two grandsons, Harry S. Allen IV and Daniel N. Gause of Florence; three granddaughters, Elizabeth Allen and Lea N. Gause of Florence and Jaime L. Robbins of Hartsville.

HAL ADAMS

Services for Hal McColman Adams, 86, will be held at 11 a.m. todoay, Aug. 2, 2000, at the First Presbyterian Church. Rev. Dr. Bob Murphy will officiate with a private burial, directed by Brown-Penington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 213 W. Home Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550. Mr. Adams died Sunday, July 30. Born in Marlboro County, he was a son of the late Robert Lee and Anna McColman Adams. He was an alumnus of Clemson University, a veteran of World War II, formerly associated with NC Textile Firms, and a member of the Robbins Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and served as a deacon in both Hartsville and Southern Pines. He was employed with Sonoco Products Company from 1956 to 1979. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Ann Bobo Adams of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Dianne and Ronald J. Turner of Charlotte, N.C.; and grandson, Daniel McColman Turner.

DAISY MASTERS

Services for Daisy Moore Masters, 79, were 2 p.m. Monday, July 31, 2000, in the chapel of Dillard Memorial Funeral Home with Rev. Roger Byers and Rev. Jermaine Todd, officiating. Interment followed in Arial United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Dillard Memorial Funeral Home. Mrs. Masters was born in Bamberg County, a daughter of the late Mush and Rosa Lee Moore. She was a retired employee of J. P. Stevens of Rock Hill. Mrs. Masters was attending Ware Place Church of God. Surviving are two sons, Perry Masters of Fountain Inn and Samuel Masters of Hartsville; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Mrs. Masters was predeceased by her parents, her husband and one son, Tom Masters.
