Born in Hartsville, he was a son of Winston B. Thomas and Elizabeth Jan Hall Thomas. He was employed with Norris Mobile Home Transport. Surviving are his wife, Regenia Anderson of Hartsville; a son, Kenneth Brian Thomas of Asheville, N.C., two daughters, Amanda Christina Thomas of Asheville, N.C., Taylor Nicole Thomas of Hartsville; a step-son, John Anderson Jr. of Hartsville; father and step-mother, Winston and Judy Thomas of Darlington; mother, Jan Thomas of Florence; three brothers, Walter Keith Demby of Florence, Rodney Kip Thomas of Mexico, N.Y., Daniel A. Stone of Naples, Fla.; four step-sisters, Jane J. Hann of Florence, Annette J. McLamb of Ladson, S.C, Susie J. Hayes of Darlington, and Lisa J. Smith of Manila, Ariz. and special friends, Pressley and Denise Norris and Bobby Brittingham.

RONALD BYRD

Services for Ronald (Ron) Byrd, 47, were held at 4 p.m. Friday, July 28, 2000, in Palmetto Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. E. B. Burroughs, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchel-Josey Funeral Home. Mr. Byrd died Monday, July 24, 2000, at his residence after a brief illness. He was born in Darlington, a son of the late James Sr. and Christia Bell Edwards Byrd. He was a life member of Palmetto Baptist Church. He graduated from Mayo High School, class of ‘71 and continued his studies at Allen University, Columbia, where he received a B.A. degree in business education. Mr. Byrd was a self-employed accountant. Survivors include twin sons, Ronald and Donald Byrd of New Orleans; a daughter, Kristen Byrd of Lamar; five brothers, James (Ethella) Byrd, Oscar Byrd and Bernard Byrd, all of Darlington, Charles Byrd of Virginia and Aaron Byrd of Baltimore, Md.; an aunt, Mrs. Nazaline Williams of Ohio and several nieces, nephews and cousins. NITA GRIGGS Graveside services for Nita Pankey Griggs, 88, were held at 5 p.m. Sunday, July 30, 2000, in Patrick cemetery with Rev. Ed Griggs officiating, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Patrick Rescue Squad. Mrs. Griggs, widow of Arnold Griggs, died Saturday, July 29. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late William M. and Rowena Huggins Pankey. Surviving are her sons and daughter-in-law, Bud Griggs of Patrick and Lawrence H. and Lois King of Lexington; a daughter, Marian Perdue of Patrick; three sisters, Sue Broach and Jackie Clark, both of Columbia and Julia Seymour of Darlington; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild. She was predeceased by a daughter, Frances Bice and a daughter-in-law, Betty Ratiff Griggs.

KEITH MULLIS

Services for Keith Mullis, 33, were held at 5 p.m. Thursday, July 27, 2000, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Stanley Dickerson officiating with burial in Westview Memorial Park. Mr. Mullis died Monday, July 24. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of Faye Knight Mullis and the late Max M. Mullis. Surviving are his daughter, Candace Brooks Mullis of Hartsville; his mother of Hartsville; two sisters, Linda Faye Mullis, and Maxine (Paul) Johnson; niece and her husband, Tina (Lee) Newsome also of Hartsville.

DEWEY O'NEAL

Services for Dewey O'Neal, 63, were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 27, 2000 at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Carroll Hall, Robert Barr and Milton Bradshaw, officiating. Burial was in Magnolia cemetery. Mr. O'Neal died Monday, July 24. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Leslie W. and Blanche Vivian Johnson O'Neal. He was retired as a self-employed electrician. Surviving are two sons, Larry (Danette) O'Neal and Jerry O'Neal, both of Hartsville; three brothers, Alfred O'Neal and Cecil O'Neal, of Hartsville and Leslie O'Neal of Rock Hill; three sisters, Eloise Eden of Charleston, Juanita McElveen and Frances Barker, both of Hartsville; and four grandchildren.

Graveside services for Sarah Howle Lafferty, 90, were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 27, 2000, in Magnolia cemetery, with Rev. Bud Boatwright, officiating, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church or Hospice of the Pee Dee. Mrs. Lafferty, widow of Wilbur L. Lafferty, died Tuesday, July 25. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late James Wiley and Daisy Morris Howle. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and a retired farmer. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Faye L. (Frank) H. Smothers of Hartsville; two grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren

EARL LEINDECKER

Graveside services for Earl T. Leindecker, 70, of Columbus, Ga., will be held today, July 28, 2000, at Union United Methodist Church cemetery, with Rev. David Myers and Rev. Charlie Short, officiating, directed by Norton Funeral Home, Hartsville. Mr. Leindecker was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., the son of the late John E. and Elizabeth Easton Leindecker. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, retiring from the Army with more than 20 years of services. He retired from the Muscogee County School system after more than 20 years, where he was an elementary school teacher. He was a member of Union United Methodist Church. Survivors are his wife, Sybil King Leindecker of Columbus, Ga. formerly of McBee; one brother, Richard E. King of McBee; one brother-in-law, Richard E. King of McBee; two sisters, Bernice L. Speer of Orlando, Fla. and Mary Jane Bradt of Zelienople, Pa. and one brother, John T. Leindecker of Calif.

HUGH B. PLYLER

Services for Hugh B. Plyler, 80, of Darlington, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 27, 2000, in Indian Branch United Methodist Church. Burial followed in White Plains Baptist Church cemetery, between Jefferson and Pageland, directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home. Mr. Plyler was born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late George William and Frances Irene Ogburn Plyler. He was a member of Indian Branch United Methodist Church and the men's Sunday School class. Mr. Plyler was retired from Sonoco after 41 years and was a member of the Sonoco Old Timers Club. Survivors include his wife, Ruby D. Plyler of the home; a son, Jerry W. (Debbie) Plyler of Hartsville; one step-son, Ken (Barbara) Suggs of Darlington; one daughter, Shelby Jean (Walter) Hartis of Hartsville; two step-daughters, Bobbie (Billy) James of Columbia and Bonnie (Glenn) Best of Sumter; one sister, Mable (Alton) McCaskill of Bethune; 23 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Indian Branch United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 224, Darlington, SC 29540.

WOODROW LINCOLN

Services for Woodrow Lincoln, 85, were 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 26, 2000, in New Hopewell Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home. Mr. Lincoln died Thursday, July 20, 2000 in Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was educated in Darlington County public schools. He was a member of New Hopewell Baptist Church, president of the senior Usher Board and retired Ansonia American Brass of Ansonia, Conn. Surviving are a daughter, Lynda (Ronald) Sutton of Norwich, Conn.; a brother, Franklin Brown of Ansonia, Conn.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

DOROTHY HOWLE

Services for Dorothy Williamson Howle, 62, will be held at 11 a.m. today, July 28, 2000, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church with Rev. Bud Boatwright officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Bethlehem United Methodist Church. Mrs. Howle died Tuesday, July 25. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late John D. and Lottie Boseman Williamson. she was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church and the Bethlehem Stars. She was retired from Klopman of Society Hill. Surviving are her husband, Lewis R. Howle of Hartsville; two sons, Dewane (Hope) Howle, Rusty (Melissa) Howle, all of Hartsville; sisters, Cynthlu 'Cindy' Harrelson and Johnnie Mae Holloman, both of Pontiac, S.C.; three granddaughters, Jessica Howle, Katie Huggins, and Rebecca Howle. She was predeceased by a son, Michael Howle.

Graveside services for Ruth James Howle will be held at 2 p.m. today, July 28, 2000, in Magnolia cemetery with Rev. Dr. Bob Cline, officiating, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorial may be made to the Darlington County Humane Society. Mrs. Howle, widow of Wilkins Byrd and William M. (Bill) Howle, Sr., died Tuesday, July 25, 2000. Born in Richmond, Va., she was daughter of the late Walter Bartow and Leila Goodson. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Deborah Sunday School Class. Surviving are her step-sons and their wives, Bill (Rendy) Howle Jr. of Orlando, Fla. and Mary Jeanette Howle of Jacksonville, Fla., David (Carol) Howle of Seneca, and six grandchildren.

Mr. Branch, husband of Judy Catoe Branch, formerly of Middendorf Community, died Thursday, July 20. Born in Turner County, Ga. He was a son of the late C. B. and Laura Parham Branch. He was retired from Armour & Company and was a restaurant owner. Surviving are his wife of Jacksonville, Fla., daughters and son-in-laws, Beth (Robert) Bradley of Orange Park, Fla. and Lisa (Terry) Anderson of St. Augustine, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

MARGARET BEDENBAUGH

Services for Margaret Nowlan Bedenbaugh, 53, were held at 4 p.m. Monday, July 24, 2000, from the chapel of Norton Funeral Home. Mrs. Bedenbaugh died July 21. Born in Guilford County, N.C., she was the daughter of Mary Elizabeth Fields and the late Dr. F. B. Nowlan. She was a member of PALS and Twitty United Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband, Bob Bedenbaugh from Hartsville; two sons, Mark D. Semino and Drake Semino, both of Columbia; two brothers, F. B. Nowlan Jr. from High Point, N.C. and Richard Scott Nowlan from Pleasant Garden, N.C.; and four grandchildren. Hoffman of Hartsville, three daughters, Carolyn (Charles) Walters of Camden, Judy Barr and Mirian Jean Bailey, both of Florence; three sisters, Edell Johnson, Mary Johnson and Eloise Bullard, all of Hartsville; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Carroll Hall officiating, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Mrs. Fayed, wife of Harbi Fayed, died Saturday, July 22. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of Billy Griggs and Sara Byrd Griggs. Surviving are her husband of Hartsville; father and mother, both of Hartsville; brother, John N. Adams of Hartsville; nieces, Vera Ann Griggs, Emily Diane Adams and Tyler Adams. She was predeceased by a brother, Joseph E. Griggs.

Graveside services for Master Billy Hunter Hughes, who died on Thursday, July 20, 2000, were held on Saturday, July 22, at 10 a.m. in Brown Springs Baptist Church cemetery in Patrick, directed by Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home. Master Hughes was born in Florence, a son of Shannon Maria Byrd and Don Richard Hughes Jr. Surviving are his parents, Shannon Byrd and Don R. Hughes Jr. of Florence; one brother, Tyler Roscoe of the home; Maternal grandparents, Mike and Janie Byrd Rivers of Hartsville, and the late Billy J. Byrd.; Paternal grandparents, Don R. and Peggy Odom Hughes Sr. of Wadesboro, N.C.; and great-grandparents, Sadie Mae Byrd of McBee, Margaret Chisholm of Patrick, and H.E. Hughes of Troutman, N.C.

Services for Madeline Watkins Mitchum, 70, will be held this morning at 11 a.m. July 24, 2000, at Union United Methodist Church with Rev. David Myers, officiating, Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Mrs. Mitchum was born in Chesterfield County, the daughter of the late Henry and Stella Mae Sowell Watkins. She was a member of Union United Methodist Church and was a retired nurse. Surviving are three sons and daughter-in-laws, Bill (Jenny) Waktins and Harvey T. (Linda) Watkins, both of McBee and Lynn Watkins of Camden; ten grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by husband, K. S. Mitchum; one daughter, Madeline H. Blackwell; one grandson, Glenn Blackwell and one sister, Margie Hilton. Memorials may be made to Union United Methodist Church cemetery Fund at Route 1, Box 235, McBee, S.C. 29101.

LILLIAN W. WARREN

Mrs. Lillian W. Warren, 91, of Darlington, died on Wednesday, July 19, 2000, in a local nursing home after an illness. Services were held on Friday, July 21, 2000, at 4 p.m. in the Clyde Church of God at Pineridge. Burial followed in the Clyde Church of God cemetery, directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home. Mrs. Warren was born in Society Hill and was the daughter of the late Charlie and Dora Weatherford Wallace. She was a member of the Clyde Church of God. Mrs. Warren was predeceased by two sons, Richard and James Tadlock; four sisters, Ola Mixon, Leila Ezzell, Pearl Atkinson, Edith Wells; and two brothers, Charlie Wallace and Brooks Wallace. Survivors include one d aughter, Jeanette (Andy) Crimminger of Florence; three sisters, Ethel Tadlock of Darlington, Vermelle Gainey and Annie Stephens both of Hartsville; 15 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.
