CHARLES MUMFORD SR.

Services for Charles “Charlie” Mumford Sr., were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, 2000, at Jerusalem Baptist Church with interment in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home. Mr. Mumford died Thursday, July 13, in Charleston after an illness. Born in Darlington County, he was one of 12 children of the late Fred and Sylvia Backus Mumford. He was reared on the farm during his early life and later was employed with the Old Bleachery before his employment with Klopman Textile Plant of Society Hill, where he worked until his retirement in 1977. He maintained a lifetime membership in Jerusalem Baptist Church and served seven days a week with efforts to maintain a beatiful structure on clean grounds. He was a faithful servant of his church and served in many capacities, Sunday School Teacher, member of the choric, Prayer leader and Senior Deacon. He was also a member of the Mt. Rona Masonic Lodge #348. He was predeceased by all his siblings. Survivors include three sons, Ronald (Beulah) Mumford and Gerald (Jeanette) Mumford, both of Hartsville and Cleveland (Ann) Mumford of Tacoma, Wash.; two nieces, Willette Toney of Hartsville and Annie Mae Wingate of Darlington; one nephew, Leroy Mumford of Philadelphia, Pa. and a host of very dear friends.

EDWARD GRAHAM

Services for Edward Graham, of Darlington, will be held at 3 p.m. today, July 19, 2000, at New Hopewell Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home. Mr. Graham, 61, died Saturday, July 15, at his home after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late James and Annie Mills Graham. He received his education in Darlington County public schools and attended New Hopewell Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mary Jane Hunter of Darlington; two daughters, Joe Ann McFarland of Society Hill and Betty Lisney of Queens, N.Y.; a son, James Graham of Hartsville; a step-daughters, Paulette McCall of Hartsville; seven step-sons, Toney Hunter, Matine Hunter, Ivory John, Andie Graham and Bryan Graham, all of Darlington, Larry Johnson and Paul Hunter, both of Hartsville; six sisters, Mae Dot Lee, Louise Graham, Mary Ann Graham and Ininian Graham, all of Brooklyn, N.Y., Geraldine Graham of Hartsville and Dianne Kelley of Florence; five brothers, Harvey Graham of Brooklyn, N.Y., Jimmy Graham, Ray Graham, Archie Zimmerman and George Zimmerman, all of Hartsville; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

JOHN HUNTER

Mr. John Hunter died Monday, July 17, in Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

ANGIE HORTON

Services for Angela “Angie” Byrd Horton, 29, were held at 5 p.m. Monday, July 17, 2000, at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church. Rev. Jona-than Behler and Milton Bradshaw will officiate with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorial may be made to Mt. Olivet Baptist Church. Mrs.Horton died Friday, July 14. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of Malcolm and Barbara Warren Byrd. She was a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church and was employed with Winn-Dixie Pharmacy. Surviving are her husband, Robert Horton of Patrick; father and mother of Patrick, brother Roger (Kim) Byrd of Patrick; niece, Bethany Byrd; paternal grandmother, Geneva C. Byrd of Patrick; maternal grandmother, Fodie Warren of Hartsville; father-in-law, Jamie L. Horton of Jefferson; sisters-in-law, Deborah Morris of Cassatt, Wanda Deese of Rock Hill and Marilyn Clark of Jefferson.

DORIS K. NORTHCUTT

Services for Doris King Northcutt, 79, were held at 4 p.m. Monday, July 17, 2000, at West Hartsville Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Thomlinson and Rev. John Hamilton officiating. Burial was in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Mrs. Northcutt was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late James Hilton and Vivian Newsom King. She was a member of West Hartsville Baptist Church, Woodman of the World, Eastern Star and Kings Sunshine Tours. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Byrnes Smith of Hartsville; one son and daughter-in-law; Michael and Brenda Northcutt Sr.; one daughter in law, Debbie Northcutt Galloway, all of Hartsville; six grandchildren, Nan Johnson, Tina Ferrence, Michael Northcutt Jr., Ronald R. Northcutt Jr., Emily Northcutt, all of Hartsville and Tonya Northcutt of Richmond, Va.; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Samuel Northcutt; sons, Ronald Ray Northcutt Sr. and Donald Wofford Northcutt and brother, Raiford King Sr. Memorials may be made to West Hartsville Baptist Church Building Fund or Emmanuel Baptist Church Building Fund.

MARY E. RUBIN

Services for Mary Ella Rubin were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 9, 2000, in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Eugene Thomas, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home. Mrs. Rubin died Tuesday, July 4, in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Viola Boseman and Waymom Simmons. She was the widow of Willie Rubin. She was a life member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and was the Mother of the church. Survivors include a special cousin, Louise Baccus of Darling-ton; three nieces, Helen (Hey-ward) Derry of Darlington, Sarah Ervin of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Lula Ervin of White Plains, N.Y.; four nephews, Rev. Waymon (Senora) Mumford, Abe (Prophet Mittie) Mumford, Sam (Princola) Mum-ford and James (Serena) Mum-ford, all of Florence; and other nieces, nephews and cousins.

JOSEY LEE

Services for Josey “Bud” Lee were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, 2000, in Sandy Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Charles K. Wilson, pastor and Brother Levern Kirkland Sr., officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home. Mr. Lee, 96, died Saturday, July 1, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Lee County, a son of the late Arthur and Minnie Jackson Lee. At an early age, he joined Sandy Grove United Methodist Church and remained a member throughout his life. Survivors include four sons, Ulysses Lee and Carnell Lee, both of Baltimore, Md., Lawrence (Jannie) Lee of Hopkins and Lonnie Lee of Lamar; seven daughters, Mrs. Fostine (James) Jarmon, Ms. Pandora Phillips, both of Baltimore, Md., Ms. Yvonne Lee of Columbia, Miss Florence Scott of Darlington, Velencia Lee, Ms. Rudell Lyde and Ms. Naomi (Napolean) Carter, all of Lamar; one brother, Winston (Mary Ellen) Lee of Timmonsville; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

HENRY RANDOLPH

Services for Henry Bachelor Randolph, 77, of Darlington, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 20, 2000, at Trinity United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm. Wednesday at the funeral home. Mr. Randolph was born in Johnston, S.C., the son of the late Henry and Delma Rhoden Randolph. He received his B.A. in pharmacy from the University of South Carolina where he was president of Pi Kappa Phi in 1948. He was an active pharmacist for 51 years. Mr. Randolph served his country in the U.S. Air Corps during World War II in the Pacific. He had many interests and was involved in many civic and professional organizations and was an active member of the Lions Club. He was instrumental in the organization of the Pee Dee Pharmaceutical Association and remained an active member. Surviving are five children, Mike (Kay) Randolph of Florence, Russell Randolph of Nantucket, Mass, Beth (Gary) Brock of Ruby, Lee (Sydney) Randolph of Darlington and Josie (Paul) Solomon of Pawley’s Island; one grandson, Henry Solomon;and his former wife and deer friend, Jo Alice McMillan Randolph. Memorials may be made in care of Trinity United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 16, Darlington, S.C. 29540 or to Epworth Children’s Home, P.O. Home, P. O. Box 50466, Columbia, S.C. 29550.

SALLIE BASS

Graveside services for Sallie Ann Humphries Bass, 91, will be held at 10 a.m. this morning, July 14, 2000, in Bethel United Methodist Church cemetery with Rev. Carroll Pope officiating, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church. Mrs. Bass, widow of Hood Bass, died Wednesday, July 12. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late John Duncan and Meddie Oakley Humphries. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. Surviving are her sister, Edith Ellis of Darlington and nephew, John Pressly Stewart of Hartsville.

ANNIE GAINEY

Services for Annie Truett Gainey, 90, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 15, 2000, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. John Hamilton will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Friday, from 6 to 8 pm. at the funeral home. Memorial may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church. Mrs. Gainey, widow of Bealer Gainey, died Wednesday, July 12. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late James Weldon and Sally (Teed) O’Neal Truett, Sr. She was a charter member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. She was retired from Sonoco Products Company with 45 years of service and was a member of the Old Timers Club. Surviving are her sisters, Nita Morrison, Maybelle Anderson and Agnes Thompson, all of Hartsville.

AARON HAYDEN SR.

Graveside services for the family of Aaron F. Hayden Sr., 79, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 13, 2000, in Magnolia cemetery. The Rev. Steven Young will officiate, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Mr. Hayden, widower of Rosalie Edwards Hayden, died Tuesday, July 11. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late James Cornelius and Ada Harrell Hayden. He retired after many years of service as a master watchmaker. Surviving are his sons and daughter-in-law, Jimmy (Patricia) Hayden, Frankie Hayden, all of Hartsville; daughters, Betty (Jake) Jacobs, Myra (Ben) Richey, Crystal (Mac) McDonald, all of Hartsville; sisters, Melvin Dixon of Darlington, Lois Gainey of Kannapolis, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.

MARIE TEAL

Services for Marie Jones Teal, 77, will be held at 5 p.m. today, July 14, 2000, at Cedar Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Homer Hinson, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Chesterfield, Box 293, Chesterfield, SC 29709. Mrs. Teal, widow of George Walker Teal, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Lottie Gainey Jones. She was a member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church and taught Sunday School for 45 years. Surviving are her sons, Charles Teal, Don (Doris) Teal, all of Patrick; sister, Esther Griggs Gainey of Hartsville; grandchildren, Donna Marie Teal and Ben Teal. She was predeceased by a brother, J. D. Jones.

PRESTON HUNTER II

Services for Preston Hunter II, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 8, 2000, in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial was Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Florence National cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home. Mr. Hunter, 39, died Tuesday, July 4, after an apparent heart attack. He was born in Washington, D.C., a son of Preston Hunter Jr. and the late Margaree Dewitt Hunter. He was a graduate of Rosenwald High School and after school he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He received his basic training at Fort Dix, N.J. He completed a 17 years career with a tour of duty in Germany and was honorably discharged at Fort Eustic, Va. Surviving other than his father of Washington, DC arehis wife, Loretta Allen Hunter of Yorktown, Va.; two daughters, Tiffany Hunter and Portia Tedder, both of Yorktown, Va.; a son, Antonio P. Hunter also of Yorktown, Va.; seven sisters, Elnora Benjamin, Margaret Flynn, Jacqueline Williamson and Joyce Sanders, all of Darlington, Vallaree Hunter and Selena Slater, both of Hartsville and Mary Hunter of Charlotte, N.C., three brothers, Willie Ervin of Hartsville, Billy Hunter of Darlington and Willie Hunter of Florence.

RUTH S. WHEELING

Services for Ruth Samuel Wheeling, 66, were at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 13, 2000, in St. Paul Community Church. Burial was in Mt. Calvary Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home. Mrs. Wheeling died Saturday, July 1, in Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Lee County, a daughter of the late Otis and Abigail Samuel. She was educated in Lee County public schools. She was a member of St. Paul Community Church, Usher Board and Communion attendant. Surviving are two daughters, Vanessa Wade of Winnsboro and Arlean Wheeling Goodson of Hartsville; a son, Carl L. Wheeling of Hartsville and eight grandchildren.

MODESTINE WOODS

Services for Modestine Bess Woods will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 15, 2000, at St. John United Methodist Church, Oates, directed by Hines Funeral Home with interment to follow in the church cemetery. Viewing will be at the church from 10 a.m. until time of funeral. No viewing of the body after the service. Mrs. Woods died Sunday, July 9 at Sunbridge Rehabilitation Center in Statesboro, Ga. She was the daughter of the late Newton Louis and Annie Peoples Bess and was born in Darlington County. A graduate of Butler High School, she received a Bachelors Degree in education from Morris College. She also completed her Master’s Degree and Elementary Principals Certificate at South Carolina State University. To increase her proficiency as a principal, she did further study at the University of South Carolina and retired as school principal. She was affiliated with various professional associations and held many leadership positions in the community, county and state organizations including the South Carolina Farm Bureau. Mrs. Woods’ family members were pioneers of St. John United Methodist Church where she was a lifetime member and served in many capacities and was the originator and director of the first youth choir. She served one year as classroom teacher, 15 years as principal of St. John’s Elementary and 21 years principal of Southside Elementary, making a total of 37 years of service. After retirement in 1980, she became an avid garden and after the death of her husband, Golden Woods, she managed the family farms until her declining health. She was preceded in death by her husband, Golden Woods; a sister, Alternese Bess Bonaparte; and a brother, Harold Hercules Bess. Survivors include a daughter, Arneese (Julius Jr.) Abraham; granddaughter, Sheryl C. (Vernon) Littles, both of Statesboro, Ga.; a grandson, Julius Golden (Judith) Abraham III of Atlanta, Ga.; four sisters, Bernice Barker and Lurlean (James W.) Mack, both of Lamar, Juliet Pasley of Hemingway and Mae Willis (Zaddock Sr.) Solomon of Baltimore, Md.; two grandchildren, Vernard Elbarett Littles of Statesboro, Ga. and Erica Nicole Abraham of Atlanta, Ga. She is survived by a host of very dear nieces, nephews, other dear relatives and close friends.

LARRY GIBSON

Services for Larry Dean Gibson, 44 of Wadesboro, N.C., will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 15, 2000, at Miller-River-Caulder F. H. Chapel in Chesterfield. Mr. Gibson was born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Minor Lloyd Jordan and Genora Gibson Faile. He was a retired supervisor with Hildreth Wood Products in Ansonville, N.C. Survivors are his wife, Jackie Deese Gibson of Rockingham, N.C.; four brothers, Charles Hancock of Hartsville, Carl Gibson of Wadesboro, N.C., Jerry Gibson and Mickey Gibson, both of Lancaster; two sisters, Lenora Gibson of Dallas, Texas, and Cynthia Haire of Hartsville; also nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles.

MODESTINE B. WOODS

Mrs. Modestine Bess Woods died Sunday, July 9, 2000, in Statesboro, Ga. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the home of her sister, Bernice Walker, at 2841 Oates Hwy., Lamar.
