Services for Altha Hough Barnes, 92, of Camden, will be held on Friday, May 26, 2000, at 4 p.m. in East Camden Church of God with burial in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to East Camden Church of God, Highway #1 North, Camden, S.C. or to Hospice of Kershaw County, 2001 W. DeKalb St., Camden, S.C. 29020, directed by Kornegay Funeral Home Camden Chapel. Mrs. Barnes died on Wednesday, May 24. Born in Camden, she was the daughter of the late Colin Williams and Molly Hunnicutt Hough. She was retired from the Wateree Kendall Plant and was a member of East Camden Church of God, where she was an adult Sunday School teacher for 40 years. Surviving are two daughters and son-in-law, Mary Gardner of Camden and Clarine and Carol Mozingo of Bishopville; two sons and daughter-in-law, B. Fred Barnes of Camden and James W. “Bill” and Evelyn Barnes of Camden; two sisters, Edwilla Ham and Willene Goodale, both of Camden; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

GENEVA FIELDS

Services for Geneva Fields, 58, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 26, 2000, at House of Prayer Holiness Church. The Rev. Billy Melton will officiate with burial in Newman Swamp United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Mrs. Fields died Tuesday, May 23. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late George Wallace and Pauline Watford Fields. She was a member of the House of Prayer Holiness Church and was employed with MSD of Darlington for 17 years. Surviving are two sons, George Fields and Adam Fields, both of Lamar; a daughter, Loraine Moody of Lamar; sisters, Mary Sue Mozingo of Hartsville and Bessie Lee Knotts of Lamar; three grandchildren, Kandis Moody, Tiffany Fields and George Fields Jr.

ELMER R. GILLILAND

Elmer Ruth Gillialand, 85, of Asheville, N. C., formerly of Hartsville, died Wednesday, May 24, 2000, in an Asheville North Carolina hospital after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.

CURTIS McFARLAND

Service for Curtis “Spankey” McFarland will be 4:00 p.m. Friday in New Hopewell Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery directed by Young & Young Funeral Home. Mr. McFarland, 59, died Saturday. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Townsend and Leila Young McFarland. He was a graduate of Rosenwald High School Class of 1959. He was a member of New Hopewell Baptist Church and was employed with Chesterfield Lumber Co. and was an Army veteran. Surviving are his wife, Margaret O’Neal McFarland of Darlington; a daughter, Jamie (Monte) Monroe of Temple Hill, Md.; Four sons, Toney (Toni) McFarland of Bowie, Md., Curtis (Rochelle) McFarland, Jr. Temple Hill, Md., Jeffery McFarland of Capital Right, Md. and Phillips (Elivira) Reyes of Fayetteville, N.C.; seven brothers, Carey (Mabie) Turner and Jimmy (Margaret) McFarland both of Hartsville, Townsend McFarland Jr. of Society Hill, the Rev. Jerome (Laura) McFarland and Baron (Linda) McFarland, both of Washington, D.C., James (Catherine) McFarland of Charleston and Tommy (Helen) McFarland of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a granddaughter, a great grandchild, a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

FANNIE H. SPARKS

Services for Fannie Hunter Sparks were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 24, 2000, in Jerusalem Baptist Church. Burial was in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home. Mrs. Sparks, 86, died Sunday in Morrell Memorial Convalescent Center after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Jack and Cynthia Hunter. Surviving are a daughter, Theola Lunn of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters in-law, Alease p. Hunter of Hartsville and Annie Mae Hunter of Baltimore; nieces, nephews and dear friends, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Douglas of Hartsville.

SANDY CASSIDY

Services for Naomi (Sandy) M. Cassidy, 74, were held at 10 a.m. this morning, May 24, 2000, at St. Luke United Methodist Church. The Revs. Ben and Dora Gafford officiated with burial in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Luke United Methodist Church. Mrs. Cassidy, widow of Brooks L. Cassidy, died Sunday, May 21. Born in Arkansas, she was the daughter of the late William and Ruth Malcomb. She was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. Surviving are four sons, James R. Sanders of Benedict, Md., William D. Saunders of Columbia, Mo., Richard Cassidy of Latta and John Cassidy of Darlington; a sister, Joyce Malcomb of Manning; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

HARRIETT MONTGOMERY

Services for Harriett Louise Crouch Montgomery, 71, were at 1 p.m.Tuesday, May 23, 2000, from the chapel of Norton Funeral Home with Rev. John Hamilton officiating. Burial was in Magnolia cemetery. Mrs. Montgomery died May 19. She was born in Washington, D.C., a daughter of the late Patrick and Moble Dodd Crouch. She was a retired nursing assistant. Surviving are two daughters, Frances Simard of Woburn, Mass., and Donna Montgomery Adams of Fayettevile, N.C.; two sons, Monty L. Mongtomery of Arlington, Va., and Dan Montgomery of Hartsville; one sister, Mary Carbin of Butler, Pa.; three brothers, Cliff, Denny and David (Butch) Crouch, of Butler, Pa.; and six grandchildren.

FRANCES R. THOMAS

Graveside services for Frances Register Thomas, 79, of Lydia, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, 2000, at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery in Lydia, with Rev. Ed Griggs officiating, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. Mrs. Thomas died Sunday, May 21. Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late James Raleigh and Lula Galloway Register. She was married for 58 years, attended Columbia College and was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband, Carl Major Thomas of Lydia; son, Terry (Mary) Thomas of Lydia; two daughters, Lynn T. Brown of Lydia and Susan T. (Barry) McGirt of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and four grandchildren, Greg Brown, ErinThomas, Carl McGirt and Michelle McGirt.

JIM E. SCURRY

Jim Edward Scurry, 64, died on Monday, May 22, 2000, in a Florence hospital after an illness. Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at Central Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home. Mr. Scurry was born in Lee County, the son of the late James Henry and Geneva Weaver Scurry. He served in the United States Army. Mr. Scurry started his career with R.B. Pond Construction Company from 1953-1967 and then became president and manager of Industrial Paving, Inc. from 1967 to the present. He attended Central Baptist Church and was a member of Syracuse Rod and Gun Club, Darlington County Ducks Unlimited, and the National Wild Turkey Federation. Mr. Scurry was also an avid gardener. Surviving are his wife, Delores O’Neal Scurry of the home; a son, James Edward (Trudy) Scurry of Lexington; a daughter, Mrs. Bob (Susan Scurry) Graham of Columbia; two step-sons, Jeffery Lee (Bunny) Kelly and James Gregory (Suzy) Kelly, both of Darlington; eleven grandchildren including Heather Kelly of the home; five brothers, J.T. (Carol) Scurry of Florence, Roland (Mary) Scurry of Bishopville, Lewis Scurry of Columbia, Ernest (Judy) Scurry of Darlington, and Allen (Ava) Scurry of Bishopville; and two sisters, Marie Cox of Bishopville, and Mrs. T.B. (Ruby) Northcutt of Hartsville. Mr. Scurry was preceded in death by two sisters, Willie Mae Carroway and Betty Jean Scurry; and three brothers, David Scurry, Harold Scurry, and Wayne Scurry. Memorials may be made in care of Central Baptist Church Bus Fund, 512 Spring Street, Darlington, S.C. 29532, or to the American Cancer Society Relay For Life (Darlington County), P.O. Box 316, Conway, S.C. 29528.

JIMMIE U. GARRISON

Services for Jimmie Uriah Garrison, 88, will be held at 4 p.m. today, May 24, 2000, in Beaverdam Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Homer Hinson and Rev. Stacey Hinson will officiate, directed by Kornegay Funeral Home of Camden. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, P. O. Box 411, Camden, SC 29020. Mr. Garrison died Monday, May 2. Born in Cassatt, he was the son of the late Tom and Elizabeth Atkinson Garrison. He was married to Lula Mae O’Neal Jones Garrison and was a member of Beaverdam Baptist Church. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are six daughters, Ruth Baker and Nancy Burris, both of Lugoff, Peggy Doris Hinson of Hartsville, Bonnie Wingard of Camden, Joyce Cook of Dalzell, and Bobbie Jean Wilson of Lancaster; Richard Barrett of Kershaw, Jack Garrison of Bishopville, Don Garrison of Lancaster, Wayne Garrison of Cassatt; four step-sons, Hayward A. Jones of Fayetteville, N.C., Murray A. Jones of Gaston, Steven A. Jones of Lugoff, Ray P. Jones of Columbia; 34 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, David Garrison, and a step-daughter, Martha Matthew.

MARY L. THOMAS

Services for Mary Louise Thomas were at 4 p.m. Monday, May 22, 2000, in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Memorial Chapel. Burial was in Cherry Grove Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home. Mrs. Thomas, 88, died Thursday in Wilson Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Carrie Hines. Mrs. Thomas received her education at Butler High School. She was a Sunday School teacher for over 50 years; she served as chairperson of the senior choir, vice president of the Usher’s Club for 60 or more years, a member of the gospel choir and chairperson of chapter of the WSES. Surviving are nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends. Memorials may be made to Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.

CURTIS McFARLAND

Curtis (Spanky) McFarland, 59, of Darlington, died Saturday, May 20, 2000, at Wilson Medical Center. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at his brother and sister-in-law, Carey and Mable Turner, 1404 Flag St., Hartsville.

FANNIE SPARKS

Fannie Sparks, 86, died Sunday in Morrell Memorial Convalescent Center after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at her sister-in-law, Alease Hunter, 500 S. Eighth St., Hartsville.

EDNA MAE THOMAS

Services for Edna Mae Chestnut Thomas were held at 4 p.m. Monday, May 22, 2000, in Kingsville United Methodist Church with Rev. Janice Frederick-Watts, pastor. Burial was in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Hines Funeral Home of Hartsville. Mrs. Thomas was born in Sumter County, a daughter of the late Edmund and Maggie Whay Chestnut and was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. She was married early in life to the late Grover Thomas and that union was blessed with 12 children, eight of which survive her. After marriage, she became a member of Kingsville United Methodist Church where she served as a member of the choir, the United Methodist Women and was honored as the officials “Mother of the Church”. Survivors are five daughters, Grove Mae (Levi) Johnson and Harriet Hough, both of Hartsville, Irene (Lawrence Jr.) Scott, Angeline (Clarence) Williams and Barbara (Leon) Mayshack, all of Allentown, Pa.; three sons, Eddie (Mary Lee) Thomas, Billy (Mary Ella) Thomas and Charles Thomas, all of Hartsville; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two children she reared, Damon Smith and Tyrone “Link” Johnson.

LOUIS TURNAGE SR.

Graveside services for Louis W. Turnage Sr., 75, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 22, 2000, at Magnolia cemetery. Rev. Dick Turnage officiated, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. John’s Baptist Convent, P.O. Box 240, 82 West St., Mandham, NJ 07945. Mr. Turnage died Saturday, May 20. Born in Darlington County, he was the son of the late Louis A. and Vivian White Turnage. He was a graduate of Clemson University. He retired from Sonoco after 35 years of service and was a member of the Old Timers Club. He served as a U.S. Navy Pilot in World War II. Surviving are his wife, Ivy Umbers Turnage of Hartsville; sons, Dr. Louis W. (Pam) Turnage Jr. of Gaffney, Michael (Tonya) Turnage, pharmacist of Savannah, Ga., David Turnage, of Hartsville; a daughter, Vivian T. (Jerry) Leese of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; brothers, Robert E.Turnage of Orlando, Fla., Rev. Richard W. Turnage of Pawleys Island and six grandchildren.

VIOLA C. BROWN

Services for Viola Cassidy Brown, 80, of China Grove, N.C., were held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 18, 2000, at Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel of Kannapolis, N.C., with the Rev. Raymond Bailey and the Rev. Pearlie Peterson, officiating. Burial was in West Lawn Memorial Park. Mrs. Brown died Tuesday, May 16, in Concord Nursing and Rehabilitation. She was born in Chesterfield County on May 18, 1919, and was the daughter of the late Zadie and Eilly Eddings Cassidy. She retired in 1982 from the Number Six Weave Room of Cannon Mills Plant One, Kannapolis, N.C. She had lived in this area since 1965 and was of the Methodist faith and attended Boulevard Chapel in Kannapolis. Her husband, Colon Taft Brown, preceded her in death on July 22, 1982. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Douglas and Larry Brown. Survivors are two daughters, Willie Faye Morris and her husband, Howard, of Hartsville and Frances (Willie) Helms of Concord, N.C.; five sons, Joe (Sandra) Brown of China Grove, N.C., Carroll (Linda) Brown of Salisbury, N.C., Charles Brown, David (Betty) Brown, all of Salisbury, N.C.; three sisters, Essie Atkinson of Ruby, Almae Cassidy of Kannapolis, N.C., and Pearline Moore of China Grove, N.C.; 23 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Services for Jesse Claude “J.C.” Hall, 83, were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 18, 2000, at Spring Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Buddy Amerson officiating. Burial was in Prospect United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Mr. Hall died Tuesday, May 16. Born in Kershaw County, he was a son of the late Jesse and Eva Coventing Hall. He was self-employed as a drywall contractor and enjoyed auto races and fishing. Surviving are his wife, Gladys Hall Hall of Hartsville; son, Niles C. (Barbara) Hall of Hartsville; daughter, Vivan (Allen) Dennis of Darlington; a sister, Sue Hall Johnson of Cayce; grandchildren, Barry Lynn Woods, Mrs. Johnny (Tammie) Morrison, Tonda Woods, Mrs. John C (Chris) Atkinson, Mrs. James (Melette) Dixon and Mrs. Stephen (Claudia) Nettles.
