Helen Koon Foy
September 30, 2008

Helen Koon Foy, 87, widow of J. W. Foy, died Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at the Presbyterian Home in Clinton, S.C.
She was born on March 18, 1921 in Saluda the daughter of the late Kirksey R. and Julia Mae Boozer Koon.
She retired from the Newberry County Health Department after 34 years of service. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and a former member of Aveleigh Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School for 38 years. She was also a former member of the Neil Truesdell Sunday School Class, Circle III and the Upper Room Living Prayer Group #1233.
Mrs. Foy is survived by her daughter, Nancy Foy Bedenbaugh and husband Lewis of Prosperity; her son, James Robin Foy and wife Glenda of Columbia; three grandchildren, Neil Robin Foy, Cassie Rae Foy and Tyla Bedenbaugh Bowers; three great-grandchildren, Laban James Bowers, Kellen Chase Foy and Coby Lane Foy; and nephews, Kirksey D. Koon of Newberry and Ramie R. Koon of Columbia. She was predeceased by a brother, Raymond Lee Koon.
Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 A.M. Friday in Grace Lutheran Church by the Rev. Eric Fink. Interment was in Rosemont Cemetery.
Visitation was from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry.
Memorials may be made to Samaritan’s Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, N.C. 28607 or to the Presbyterian Home of Clinton, 801 Musgrove St., Newberry, SC 29325.
Active pallbearers will be Kirksey Koon, Ramie Koon, Neil Foy, Craig Bowers, Mr. & Mrs. Elon Eargle and Arnold Hiller.

Mildred White Martin
September 27, 2008

Mildred White Martin, 86, of 926 Jessica Ave., Newberry, widow of Willis E. Martin, died Saturday, September 27, 2008 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Martin was born in Greer, SC on February 3, 1922 a daughter of the late Burnwell Victor “B.V.” White and Myrtle Carr White of Ware Shoals, SC.
She is survived by a grandson, David Martin and his wife Christy of West Columbia; two great-granddaughters, Shelby L Martin and Rowan P. Martin; and a sister, Lois White McDonald of Statham, Georgia. Mrs. Martin was predeceased by her son, Michael E. Martin.
Graveside funeral services were conducted at 11:00 am Thursday in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was from 6 to 7:30 P.M. Wednesday at her residence, 96 Jessica Ave., Newberry.
The family suggests memorials be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, PA 23058-5216.

Frances Boozer Bickley
September 26, 2008

Frances Boozer Bickley, 72, peacefully reunited with her Lord and Savior at her home on September 26, 2008 after her diagnosis with lung cancer in April. Frances was born on February 5, 1936 to her parents the late Ligon William and Edith TeNora Hunnicutt Boozer. Frances resided in Raleigh for over 35 years, and also called Newberry, where she was raised, her home.
Frances was a wonderful person and anyone who knew her was touched by her smile, her laughter and mostly her love. She was very creative and found joy in oil painting, stain glass, and sewing. She loved the beach but most of all she loved being home and spending time with her family. At her last high school class reunion she cites her biggest accomplishments in life as “having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and being a loving and devoted wife and mother”. Frances was blessed with three grandchildren and each one was the light of her life. Her love of life and her caring spirit will always be remembered. Frances was a friend to all. Frances had a deep faith in the Lord and encouraged those around her to always trust in His will and plan for their lives. Throughout her illness, Frances kept her heart fixed upon God’s love and His grace.
She will always be loved by her husband Herbert Duane Bickley; son David Wright Bickley and his wife Koren of Wexford, PA; daughter Susanne “Susie” Cresto of Greensboro, NC; her precious grandchildren Spencer Wright Bickley, Seth Davis Bickley, and Ava Elizabeth Cresto; and her sister Jane Boozer Hipp and her husband Curtis Wesley Hipp of Cayce, SC.
Frances was preceded in death by her parents and brother Ernest Boozer.
Funeral services were held at 3:00 pm on Sunday October 5th, at the Chapel of Whitaker Funeral Home.
Memorials can be made to the charity of your choice or to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary’s Street, Raleigh, NC 27605.

James O. "Butch" Zobel
September 27, 2008

James O. “Butch” Zobel, 85, of 2235 Derrill Ave., Newberry, died Saturday, September 27, 2008 at Providence Hospital in Columbia.
Mr. Zobel was born on May 24, 1923 in Newberry, a son of the late Charles J. and Nancy G. Zobel. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps for three years. Mr. Zobel attended Newberry College and was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer and the Men’s Bible Class. He worked as the Newberry County Magistrate and Chief Magistrate for 26 years.
Mr. Zobel is survived by his wife, Margaret “Bobbie” Hollingsworth Zobel and three sons: Jimmy Zobel and wife, Vickie, of Prosperity, David Zobel of Sunburst, Montana, and Kent Zobel of Newberry. He was predeceased by two brothers and a sister.
Graveside funeral services were conducted at 4:00 PM on Wednesday in Newberry Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Caldwell Day
Visitation was from 2:00 to 3:30 P.M. Wednesday prior to the service at Whitaker Funeral Home.
Active pallbearers were Barry Koon, Johnny Mack Scurray, Bobby Gilliam, Brent Yarborough, William Young, Bobby Cole Yarborough, and Brian, Yarborough. Honorary pallbeares were the members of the Men's Bible Class of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer.

Annie Ruth Lindler Frick
September 24, 2008

Annie Ruth Lindler Frick, 83, formerly of 601 Paul Fulmer Road, Chapin, died Wednesday September 24, 2008 at Generations of Chapin.
She was born June 30, 1925 in Little Mountain, a daughter of the late A. Pearson and Katie Cannon Lindler. She was a graduate of Chapin High School and a retired nursing assistant at the Lowman Home. She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church where she was a member of the Fellowship Circle and the Primetimer’s and taught Catechism classes and Sunday school for many years.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, D. H. Frick of Chapin; 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Leon F. Fulmer, Sr. of Prosperity and Amanda and Essie Maghsoud of Rock Hill; 3 sisters, Drucilla Boland , Naomi Counts, and Esther Frick all of Chapin; a brother, Herbert Lindler of Chapin; 4 grandchildren and spouses, Lynnette and Todd Lever of Pomaria, Leon and Meredith Fulmer, Jr. of Prosperity, and Hanna Maghsoud and Zachary Maghsoud both of Rock Hill; and 5 great grandchildren, Will Lever, Shelby Lever, Lee Fulmer, Lyle Fulmer and Noah Fulmer. She was predeceased by 3 brothers Louie Van Lindler, Clyde Lindler, and Loy Lindler; a sister Mabrie Metts and a devoted niece, Mrs. Wako (Frances) Cotney.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Friday at St. Peter Lutheran Church by the Rev. David Tholstrup and the Rev. Wako Cotney. Interment will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
The family will be at her residence, 601 Paul Fulmer Road, Chapin and will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Chapin.
Active Pallbearers will be Earl Frick, Jr., Kenneth Frick, Phil Frick, Kelvin Frick, Benny Counts, Roger Lindler and Kim Boland.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Staff of Generations of Chapin, Staff of Harmony Hospice and the Doctors and Staff of Pinner Clinic.
Memorials may be made to St. Peter Lutheran Church, 900 Dreher Island Road, Chapin, SC 29036.

Stephen C. "Steve" Floyd
September 13, 2008

Stephen C. “Steve” Floyd, 83, of Springfield Place, Newberry, died Saturday of natural causes.
He was born on May 9, 1925 in Henderson, NC, a son of the late S.C. “Cliff” and Lucile Breedlove Floyd. He retired as manager of the Roses Variety Store in Newberry, having worked for them for over 40 years. He was an active member of Central United Methodist Church and he and his wife practiced their faith on a daily basis at home. He was also very active in community organizations.
Mr. Floyd was a very devoted husband and father and is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Anne Daniel Floyd; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Bill Whitacre of Fairfax, VA; two sons and daughters-in-law, S. Clifton and Lynn Floyd of Newberry and David L. and Gail Lander Floyd of Lexington; 3 brothers, Bill Floyd of Henderson, NC, Gene Floyd of Durham, NC, and Ben Floyd of Oxford, NC; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Dell Critcher and a brother, Bobby Floyd.
Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 AM Tuesday, at Central United Methodist Church by the Rev. Karen Radcliffe. Interment was at Rosemont Cemetery.

Cornelia Harris Senn
September 13, 2008

Cornelia Harris Senn, 79, of 6795 Belfast Road, Newberry, died Saturday at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
She was born on in March 6, 1929, a daughter of the late Cornelia Bethea Harris and W. W. Harris. She was a graduate of Clinton High School, attended Queens College, and graduated from Winthrop College in 1950 with a degree in music. Prior to her marriage, she worked for her family’s newspaper business, The Clinton Chronicle, and also worked as a secretary in Columbia. She was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church where she served as organist for over thirty years.
Mrs. Senn is survived by her husband, George Foster Senn, Sr.; daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and John Lusby of Clinton; sons and daughter-in-law, Foster and Sharon Senn and Wilson Senn, all of Newberry; four grandchildren, Emily Senn, McCallum Senn, Caroline Senn of Newberry, and Anna Lusby of Clinton; and a first cousin, Betty Bethea Daly of Dillon.
Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 PM Tuesday, at Trinity United Methodist Church by the Rev. Hugh Bickley. Interment was in the church cemetery.
The family did receive friends at Whitaker Funeral Home on Monday from 6 to 7:30 PM.
Active Pallbearers were Frank M. Senn, Jr., Charles Senn, Scott Senn, Danny Senn, Grady Senn, Henry Senn, Mark Senn, David Senn, Chad Senn. Honorary pallbearers were the Members of the Trinity Women’s Circle and Members of the Silver and Gold.
Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 1160 Trinity Church Road, Newberry, SC 29108.
