Services for Robert Kelley, 68, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 30, 2000, at Kelleytown Baptist Church. Rev. Gary Anderson officiated with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Kelleytown Baptist Church. Mr. Kelley died Friday, April 28. Born in Kelleytown, he was a son of the late Henry Acie and Ruth Adams Kelley. He was a member of Kelleytown Baptist Church and was a deacon and former Sunday School director. He was a farmer and vice-chairman of the Pee Dee Electric Cooperative Board of Trustees. Surviving are his wife, Floogie Woodham Kelley of Hartsville; son, Bert (Jill) Kelley; a daughter, Beth (Dan) Abernathy, of Florence; two brothers, Henry Kelley and Manly Kelley, of Hartsville; four daughters, Elizabeth Gardner, Naomi Jackson, both of Hartsville, Dora McGrew of Columbia and Alsie Kelley of Lexington; and a granddaughter, Annie Abernathy.

JAMES GAINEY

Services for James Thomas Gainey, 84, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 4, 2000, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Dr. Bob Cline will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial may be made to the First Baptist Church. Mr. Gainey died Tuesday, May 2. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Tom Wesley and Bessie Stokes Gainey. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Fellowship Sunday School class. He was owner and operator of Tommy's Exxon for 19 years, was a World War II veteran and a member of the Hartsville Masonic Lodge #173. Surviving are his wife, Lucille Hunter Gainey of Hartsville; brother, Clyde W. (Mary Ethel) Gainey of Hartsville; and two sisters, Miriam (William) Lloyd of Lydia and Lucille Chapman of Hartsville.

CLEVELAND SMITH

Services for Cleveland 'Buddy' Smith, of Fort Wayne, Ind., formerly of Darlington, were held at 3 p.m. Monday, May 1, 2000, in St. Mark Holiness Church with burial in Unionville AME Church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home. Mr. Smith was born in Philadelphia, Pa., a son of Cleveland Commander Sr. and was reared by his grandmother, Minnie Commander of Lamar. He was educated in the public school and graduated from Lamar High School, call of 1984 and after graduation he joined Job Corp, where he became proficient in the skill of welding. He worked with Pee Dee Tanks of Florence. He recently moved to Fort Wayne, Ind.. He was first a member of Unionville AME Church and in the early 90s he joined St. Mark Holiness Church of Lamar, where he was a member of the choir and Brotherhood organization. Survivors are his wife, Charlotte Ann Smith of Lamar; father, Cleveland Commanders of Philadelphia, Pa.; three step-children, William Young of Orangeburg, Marcel Young of Lamar and Sukara Young of Vielsex, Germany; grandson, Hesikiah Young of Vielsex, Germany; four brothers, Michael T. Commander, Cleveland E. Commander, Donnie Commander, Derrick Commander, all of Philadelphia, Pa.; a sister, Burnie Commander of Bishopville; two uncles, Bennie (Geneva) Commander of Florence, Thomas (Dorothy) Commander of Philadelphia, Pa.; and an aunt, Patricia Brown of Lamar.

DONYETT JOSEY

Services for Donyett (Prestige) Josey, 25, will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 4, 2000, in Butler Gym with burial in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home. Mr. Josey died Sunday, April 30, from injuries received in an automobile accident. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Mary Kelley Josey and the late Robert Josey. He was a graduate of Hartsville High School class of '92 and attended Second Baptist Church. Surviving other than his mother of Hartsville are his fiancee, Cicely McNeill of Hartsville; a daughter, Donetta Josey of Hartsville; four sisters, Jenara Josey, Hallie Josey, Renado Smith and Michelle Jacobs, all of Hartsville; two brothers, Robert Josey Jr. and Robert Smith, both of Hartsville.

ALMA TYNER

Services for Alma Stokes Tyner, 91, will be held 3 p.m. today, May 3, 2000, at Liberty Hill Baptist Church. Rev. Jim Beck will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Mrs. Tyner, widow Dewey Tyner, died Monday, May 1. Born in Darlington County, she was the daughter of the late Manuel and Roxie Layton Stokes. She was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church. Surviving are her daughters, Nina Peterson, Louise Campbell, Betty Morrison, all of Hartsville; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

GEORGE STARNES

Services for George Roscoe Starnes, 90, of Lancaster, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 30, 2000, at Hartley Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Betty Moore and Rev. Athon Arant. Burial followed at Sunset Memory Gardens in Charlotte, N.C., directed by Hartley Funeral Home of Lancaster. Mr. Starnes died Friday, April 28, at Lancaster Convalescent Center where he was a resident. He was born June 21, 1906 in Union County, NC and was the son of the late William Benson Starnes and Mary Threatt Starnes. Mr. Starnes was first married to the late Allie Snipes Starnes, second to the late Nellie Vincent Starnes and then to the late Mrs. Edna Fowler Starnes. He was an associate minister of McClain Road Baptist Church in Charlotte, N. C. Survivors are two sons, Robert G. Starnes of Lancaster and W. B. Starnes of Monroe, NC; five daughters, Rev. Betty S. Moore and Mrs. Mary Rose Harding, both of McBee, Mrs. James (Myrtle) Dabbs of Lancaster, Mrs. Poovey (Allie Mae) Mackey of Heath Springs, and Mrs. Mildred Lorene Cranford of Columbia; 30 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren and 12 great- great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association, Southern Piedmont Chapter, 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215.

CHARLES STOKES

Services for Charles E. 'Punk' Stokes, 59, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 20, 2000, at Bible Truth Holiness Church. Rev. Hazel Mixon officiated with burial in Mt. Elon cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Mr. Stokes died Friday, April 28. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Mendel Edward and Grace Windham Stokes. He was a member of Mt. Elon Baptist Church, worked at Sonoco Products Company for 25 years and had served in the S.C. National Guard. Surviving are his wife, Sara Lloyd Stokes of Hartsville; two sons, Ronnie (Connie) Stokes of Wilmington, N.C. and Charles 'Cotton' (Martha) Stokes of Hartsville; two daughters, Rebecca (Keith) Silvia, and Sherri Byrd, both of Hartsville; two step-sons, Jimmy (Pam) Smith of Hartsville and Heyward (Millie) Smith of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother, J. Carroll Stokes of Hartsville; special son-in-law, Bo Byrd and 12 grandchildren.

CHARLES BRUNSON

Services for Charles Brunson will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday, May 1, 2000, in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel with Pastor Janie G. Wilds, officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home. Mr. Brunson, 43, died Tuesday in McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Monroe Leroy and Janie Mae Rouse Brunson. Surviving are three daughters, Mary L. Brunson of Hartsville, Precious Prescott of Bishopville and Brenda Wells of Florence; a son, Calvin Wells of Florence; four sisters, Ruby Robinson of Pompano Beach, Fla., Cora Mae Hammonds and Mary Frances Brucnson, both of Hartsville and Trisha Brunson of Alburndale, Fla.; a brother, Ronnie Brunson of Darlington; eight foster brothers and sisters, Wesley Alford, Carrie Moses, Bill Williams, Benjamin Davis, Barbara Stanley, Marshall Spears, Lila Smith and Rosa Kennedy; three special nieces, Lanie Mae (Roy) McPhail, Stephanie Michelle (Allen) George and Annie Person; a special nephew, David LaVerne Brunson; a special friend Willie and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relative and friends.

JAMES BLACKWELL

Services for James Lamont Blackwell, 83, of Florence, were held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 27, 2000, at Calvary Baptist Church in Florence, conducted by Rev. W. L. Collins with burial at Mount Hope cemetery, directed by Water-Powell-Funeral Home of Florence. Mr. Blackwell was born Nov. 21, 1916, in Chesterfield County, a son of Kistler L. Blackwell and Mamie Johnson Blackwell. He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Hattye Watson Blackwell; and by sisters, Maggie Mozingo, Vera Adams, Frances Houck; brother, Loren Blackwell and daughter-in-law, Ardith C. Blackwell. He was a longtime resident of Hartsville before moving to Florence in 1965. He owned and operated automobile and mobile home businesses until 1996. He was a lifetime member of Union United Methodist Church in Chesterfield County. He is survived by two sons, Bobby G. Blackwell and Dr. Billy R. (Eileen) Blackwell, of Florence; grandchildren, Shari Martin, Gary Blackwell and Derek Blackwell, all of Florence and Deborah Blackwell and Meredith Blackwell of Charleston; great-grandchildren, Brandon Toth, Tyler Martin, Erica Martin and Spencer Blackwell of Florence and a sister, Dorothy Garris of Chesapeake, Virginia. Memorials may be made to Union United Methodist Church, Route 1, Box 235, McBee, S.C. 29101; Central United Methodist Church, 225 W. Cheves St., Florence, S.C. 29501; or to First Baptist Church, 200 S. Irby St., Florence, SC 29501.

CLEVELAND SMITH

Cleveland Smith of Ft. Wayne, Ind., formerly of Lamar, died April 20. Funeral arrangements will be handled by Hines Funeral Home of Lamar. The family will receive friends at the home of his wife, Charlotte A. Smith of 632 E. Jackson Street.

ETHEL CAMPBELL

Ethel Campbell, 90, of B Street, died Thursday in Carolina Regional Medical Center after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Susie and Eddie Thompson of 913 C. Street, Hartsville.

C. B. WHITE

Services for Clarence Boyd (C. B.) White, 73, were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 27, 2000, at Swift Creek Baptist Church. Rev. Bill Pfister will officiate with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Swift Creek Baptist Church. Mr. White died Tuesday, April 25. Born in Marion County, he was the son of the late Clarence Pickett and Florrie Belle Richardson White. He was a member of Swift Creek Baptist Church, past Deacon, and member of the T. J. Lewis Sunday School class and member of Hartsville Masonic Lodge #173. He retired as a truck driver from Sonoco after 26 years. Surviving are his wife, Barbara P. White; a son, Bobby C. White, both of Hartsville; a daughter, Shari W. Matthews of Kingstree; four brothers, Franklin M. White Sr. of Manning, Jasper C. White of Ravenel, Baker Earl White of Waycross, Ga., and Benjamin E. White of Loganville, Ga, ; three sisters, Sarah P. White of Hartsville, Betty W. Mizzell and Peggy W. Byrd, both of Charleston, and a special sister-in-law, Janet P. Enzor of Florence.

SAM HERNDON

Services for Samuel L. Herndon Jr., 75, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 29, 2000, at the First Baptist Church. Rev. Dr. Bob Cline will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church or an organization of your choice. Mr. Herndon died Wednesday, April 26. Born in Marlboro County, he was a son of the late Samuel Leroy and Fannie Bundy Herndon. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Hartsville Masonic Lodge #173 and the Old Timers Club. He was retired from Sonoco Products Company and was a graduate of Fletcher Memorial High School. He was a World War II veteran and was a volunteer with both the Blood Mobile and Meals on Wheels. Surviving are his wife, Louise Eddins Herndon of Hartsville; two sons, Samuel L. (Alice) Herndon, III of Atlanta, GA and Dr. Donald L. (Patty) Herndon of Greenville; two sisters, Doris Usher and Aileen Long, both of Bennettsville; and three grandchildren, Adam Herndon, Cari Herndon and Wesley Herndon. He was predeceased by sisters, Geneva Herndon and Louise Young.

MIRIAM WADSWORTH

Graveside services for Miriam Lena Wadsworth, 76, were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 27, 2000, at Magnolia cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home with Dr. Bob Cline and Rev. Charles Roberts, officiating. Miss Wadsworth died April 25. Born in Darlington County, she was the daughter of the late W. Carl and Ethel Lee Wadsworth. She was a member of First Baptist Church, WOW, Eastern Star, Telephone Pioneers and was retired from from Southern Bell. Surviving are one brother, Richard Wadsworth; one sister, Margaret W. Galloway, both of Hartsville; three nieces, Patricia McCoy of McBee, Rebecca Walker and Donna Wadsworth, both of Hartsville; one nephew, Harvey Galloway of Columbia; three great nieces and three great nephews. Memorials may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 1237 Gadsden Street, Suite L., Columbia, S.C. 29201.

PERRY JOHNSON

Services for Perry Johnson, 86, will be held at 2 pm. Saturday, April 29, 2000, at Chapel Hill Baptist Church. Rev. Perry Lloyd will officiate with burial in Westview cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends tonight, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Johnson died Wednesday, April 26. Born in Chesterfield County, he was the son of the late May and Katie Morrison Johnson. He was a member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church, retired from Daniel Construction, and a veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Walters Johnson of Hartsville; son, Larry A. Johnson; two daughters, Betty Nagel and Glory Huckabee, all of Hartsville; a brother, Troy Johnson of Hartsville; sisters, Alice Burns of Hartsville, Bertie Howell of St. Augustine, Fla., Mildred Collins of Winnsboro; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

MARGARET BOSEMAN

Graveside services for Margaret Douglass Boseman, 84, of Bonneau, formerly of Darlington, will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 27, 2000, at Swift Creek Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home of Darlington. Mrs. Boseman died Monday, April 24, in Trident Medical Center in Charleston. She was born in Chesterfield and was the daughter of the late William A. and Catherine Sowell Douglass. She was a member of Swift Creek Baptist Church for many years and later was a member of Dorchester Waylyn Baptist Church in North Charleston. She was a member of VFW. Mrs. Boseman was a homemaker all of her life, and she loved her home and especially enjoyed cooking. She was predeceased by her husband, James Carroll Boseman, in 1968; a daughter, Mrs. Carolyn Boseman Loser in 1970; and a son, Bryant “Dusty” Boseman in 1997. Survivors include two sons, James Michael (Sharon) Boseman of San Antonio, Texas and Douglass Carroll Boseman of Fallon, Nevada; one daughter, Rose Boseman Scott of Bonneau; one sister, Mrs. Elva Douglass Boseman of Darlington; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. Elva Boseman, 1808 Pinedale Drive, Darlington.

LOIS S. WILLIAMS

Services for Lois Sowell Williams, 88, will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 27, 2000, at McBee Baptist Church. The Rev. Larry Pitts will officiate with burial in McBee cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the McBee Rescue Squad or the McBee Baptist Church. Mrs. Williams, widow of Ernest T. Williams, died Tuesday, April 25. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late John Purdy and Etta Melton Sowell. She was a member of the McBee Baptist Church. She was retired from Sonoco Products Company and was a member of the Old Timers Club. Surviving are her brothers, Edgar Sowell of Pine Ridge, Rev. Paul Sowell and Kenneth Sowell, both of McBee. She was predeceased by six brothers, Frank Sowell, Leonard Sowell, James Sowell, Robert Sowell, Purdy Sowell, Heyward Sowell and two sister, Martha Sowell and Clara Mae Cassidy.
