PATRICK — Funeral services for James Richard McLain, 60, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 29, 2005, at Patrick Baptist Church with burial following in Patrick cemetery, directed by Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mr. McLain died Friday, May 27. He was born in Patrick, a son of Viola Brown McLain and the late James Roy McLain. He was a retired section foreman with CSX Railroad Transportation with 30 years of service and was a member of Patrick Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Tolson McLain, mother, Viola Brown McLain of Patrick; sister, Carole McLain (Ralph) Love of Florence; five step-sons: Richard Thomas, Kenneth Thomas and Stephen Thomas all of Patrick, Phillip Thomas of Melbourne, Fla., and Russell Thomas of Wildwood, Fla.; one step-daughter, Peggy Jean Gardner of Chesterfield; nephew, Jimmy Ray (Renee) Rivers of Sumter; niece, Jennifer Rivers of Florence; special cousins, Paul and Sherry White of Patrick.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy Ray McLain.

GENE BEASLEY
Funeral services for Eugene C. “Gene” Beasley, 76, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2005, at Emmanuel Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Gary Colboch and the Rev. John Hamilton will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Mr. Beasley died Monday, May 30. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Coyt C. and Carrie Johnson Beasley. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and the Living Hope Sunday School Class. He was retired from Sonoco Products Co. with 46 years of service and was a member of the Old Timers Club. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 53. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley Tyner Beasley of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Amy Beasley of Columbia; sisters and brother-in-law, Eileen Robbins of Hartsville, Midge Ann and Jessie Howell of Orlando, Fla.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Elbert and Margaret Beasley of Hartsville, Robert and Brenda Beasley of Hartsville, Larry and Ann Beasley of Hartsville, Gerald Beasley of McBee; granddaughter, Grace Beasley.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Mendel Beasley, Brevard Beasley and Vernon Beasley.

ELLEN KENNEDY
Ellen Kennedy, 65, died Friday, May 27, 2005, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at 3424 Charles Drive, Darlington, located in the Dovesville Community.

ROSA LEE FOX
Rosa Lee Fox, 65, died Saturday, May 28, 2005, at her residence after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at 303 Tillison Ave., Hartsville.

JUNIOUS PRICE
Funeral services for Junious Price will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2005, at 1 p.m. The burial will follow in the church cemetery directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. Rev. J.L. Rouse, the pastor of the church, will officiate.

Mr. Price was born Jan. 1, 1931, in Lee County, a son of the late Raymond and Elease Bennet Price. He was educated in the public schools of the county. He was originally a member of Sandy Bluff United Methodist Church. After moving to the Hartsville area, he joined Centerville AME Church. On June 23, 1951, he was married to the former Meta Jackson.

Mr. Price worked as a machine operator for many years with Dawkins Concrete Co. in Hartsville. He also enjoyed growing all kinds of vegetables in his garden and was known to plow fields for nearly everybody in the Centerville area. In addition, he was considered jack-of-all trades because he was a mechanic, a carpenter and an electrician. All who knew him will miss all of his skills and concern for his family and the community.

Two of his brothers, Roosevelt Price, Lindberg Price and Charles Price, as well as a sister, Blondie Mae Taylor, predeceased him.

Surviving to cherish the wonderful memory and maintain the legacy of Junious Price are his wife of 54 years, Meta Price of Hartsville; two sons, Joe (Louella) Price and Whit Price, both of Hartsville; five daughters, Daisy Mae (James) Jones, Barbara (Hubert) Williamson, Teresa (Franklin) Stephens, and Elizabeth Madison, all of Hartsville, and Emmie (Arthur) Samuel of Darlington; two brothers, Henry Lee Price and Raymond Price both of Hartsville; two sisters, Mary (Eddie) Thomas of Hartsville and Catherine (Foster) Fox of Darlington; his aunt, Nell Price; his sisters-in-law, Dorothy Price and Thelma Price; six grandchildren, Whitney Shawndell Brown, Jessica Rebecca Stephens, Hazle Evon Williamson, Tabitha Elizabeth Sade’ Ward, Angela (Danny) Moses and Fredreko Jackson; 10 great-grandchildren; three-great-great-grandchildren; and a host of special nieces, nephews, close relatives and friends.

FRANK WOODS
Franklin Woods, 55, died Sunday, May 22, at his residence after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 901 L Circle, Hartsville.

HOB DIXON
Funeral services for Harvey Lee “Hob” Dixon, 61, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 4, 2005, at Palmetto Baptist Church. The Revs. Ed Griggs and Grover Johnson will officiate with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends this evening, June 3, from 5 to 7 at the funeral home.

Mr. Dixon died Wednesday, June 1. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Brock and Idell Hicks Dixon. He was the owner and operator of Hob’s Bar & Grill and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Surviving are his son, Harvey Lee “Lil Hob” Dixon III of Hartsville; daughters and son-in-law, Janie Renay and Tony Carnes, Gerry Lynn Dixon, Alaina Lee Dixon, Karlee Anniston Dixon, all of Hartsville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Rachel Ellen Davis of McBee, Patricia A. Rogers of Chesapeake, Va., Ann and Max McCormick of Cheraw, Becky and Frank Hayden of Suffolk, Va.; brothers, Elijah Dixon of Patrick, Jessie “Dick” Dixon of Patrick. He was preceded in death by his son, Harvey Lee Dixon Jr.

AMELIA ANTHONY
Funeral services for Amelia Howard Anthony, 95, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 4, 2005, at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church. The Very Rev. Ted Duvall will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends today, June 3, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the home, 504 Quail Hollow Rd. Memorials may be made to St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, Box 427, Hartsville, SC 29551 or the Hartsville Museum, Box 431, Hartsville, SC 29551.

Mrs. Anthony, widow of Lawrence Kenneth Anthony, died Thursday, June 2, 2005. Born in Claussen, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Fitz Lee Howard and Louisa Penn Ervin Howard. She graduated from Florence High School and attended Winthrop College. Amelia was the oldest living communicant of St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church where she was active for many years in the life of the church. As a community volunteer, she participated in the Red Cross, the Community Concert Association, the Byerly Hospital Auxiliary, Spring Beauty Garden Club, St. David’s Society and was a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of South Carolina. She will be remembered as an avid golfer, bridge player and beloved friend and cousin of many in Darlington and Florence Counties.

Surviving are her three children, Lawrence Kenneth Anthony and his wife Anne of Summerland Key, Fla.:, Penn Anthony Gregg and her husband Alexander of Georgetown; Timothy Hopkins Anthony and his wife Penny of Hartsville.

Mrs. Anthony is survived by nine devoted grandchildren and spouses, Julian Anthony and Sarah of Dallas, Texas; Amelia Anthony Logan and Bill of Dallas, Texas; Philip Anthony of Deland, Fla.; Joseph Lawton III, M. D. and Coles of Columbia; Todd Anthony of Hartsville; Kenneth Anthony and Sissy of Salisbury, N.C.; Richard Anthony and Terrie of Hartsville; Ben Anthony and Abby of Lugoff; Mary Penn Anthony Joyce and Joel of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Charles W. Coker Sr., Fitz Lee Coker, Peter C. Coggeshall Jr., Richard Howard, Dan McEachin, Malloy McEachin, and Keith Williamson.

ANN McCALL
SOCIETY HILL — Funeral services for Annie “Ann” Freeman McCall, 62, will be held at 3 p.m. today, June 3, 2005, in Welsh Neck Baptist Church, with interment following in the church cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. McCall died Wednesday, June 1, in a local hospital. She was born in Marlboro County, daughter of the late Florence and Marion Freeman. She was a housewife and a member of Welsh Neck Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher and youth director, along with being a church clerk and choir member.

Surviving are her husband, John S. McCall Jr. of Society Hill; two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Pete Dennis and Terri and Art Hinson, all of Darlington; three grandchildren, Laurel and Jed Dennis, and Natalie Hinson; a brother and sister-in-law, D.C. and Lillian Freeman of Bennettsville; a sister, Mazie Freeman of Fayetteville; and two nieces.

SUE PADGETT
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Sue Watts Padgett, 66, will be held at 11 a.m. today, June 3, 2005, at Freedom Baptist Church with graveside services following at 3 p.m. in Bamberg Memory Gardens, Bamberg, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Padgett died Wednesday, June 1, in a local hospital. She was born in Pageland, daughter of the late J.B. and Sally Gathings Watts. She was employed as a secretary for a finance company. She was a member of Freedom Baptist Church, where she was the pianist. She and her dear friend, Mary Scarlett, touched the lives of many with their musical talent.

Surviving are her husband, Melvin Padgett of the home; five sons, Robert M. Padgett of Warsaw, N.C., Johnny R. Padgett, Ronald Padgett, both of Cayce, Curtis Padgett of Darlington, David Lampley of Bennettsville; six daughters, Nancy Padgett of Augusta, Ga., Inez Stroud of Mullins, Tommie E. Haselden of Dillon, Melody Elders of Orangeburg, Wendie “Sunshine” Holloman of Timmonsville, Mandy Sue Padgett of Darlington; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother, Harold Watts of Pageland; two sisters, Nancy Carmichael of Florence and Gail Wilson of Albany, Ga.

Mrs. Padgett was preceded in death by a son, Oral M. “Pee Wee” Padgett.

ESTELLE ABRAHAM
Funeral services for Estelle Abraham, 89, will be held at 3 p.m. today, June 10, 2005, at Second Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Abraham died Monday, June 6, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Lee County, a daughter of the late Zebbie and Maggie Blyth Joe. She received her education in the public school system in the area and was a retired employee of the Darlington County School District. She was also a member of Second Baptist Church.

Surviving are four daughters, Pauline (Henry) Kind of Brooklyn, N.Y., Catherine A (Luke) Ketter, Aliene (James) Mitchelle and Dorothy D. Abraham, all of Hartsville; three sons, Earl (Bessie Mae) Abraham and William (Edith) Abraham, both of Hartsville, and Bobby (Barbara Jean) Abraham of Darlington; four sisters, Bessie Mae Boykins, Dollie Irvin, Ella Bell and Moease Rogers; three sisters-in-law, Mary Abraham, Martha Joe and Rebecca Smalls; one brother-in-law, Jake Abraham; 31 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren and 48 great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

WILLIE HALL
Funeral services for Willie “Bill” Hall will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 11, 2005, at Centerville AME Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. The Rev. J. L. Rouse, pastor of the church, will officiate.

Mr. Hall was born Jan. 22, 1922, in Darlington County, a son of the late Hughie Hall and Mattie Gee Hall. He was educated in the public schools of the county. He was married to the former Mae Frances Ellerbe, and she preceded him in death.

Mr. Hall worked as a custodian for many years in the Darlington County School District, primarily at Hartsville High School. He was a member of Centerville AME Church where he held many leadership positions. He sang in the Gospel Choir, served as a deacon and was also the church treasurer.

“Bill, ” as he was known throughout the community, loved to sing gospel songs, and his favorite was “The Reason Why I’m In This Church.” He loved staying at home enjoying his family, but he also liked to travel. He wanted his family to remember him as a God-fearing Christian man, and he always said, “If you start out living the life, then live it on out till Jesus comes.”

Surviving to cherish the wonderful memory and maintain the legacy of Willie “Bill” Hall are his sons, James L. Hall, Jerry Hall, Weldon Hall and Timmy Hall; his daughters, Sheila Hall and Pamela Hall; his grandchildren, Antonio Hall, Caraesha Hall, Andre’ Hall and Shaun Hall; other close relatives and very dear friends.

CARL SULLIVAN
Funeral services for Carl A. Sullivan, 70, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 11, 2005, at Kelleytown Baptist Church. The Revs. Lin Kirkman, Daniel Henderson, and Charles McLendon will officiate with burial in Middendorf Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends this evening from 4 to 6 at the funeral home. Mr. Sullivan died Wednesday, June 8, 2005. Born in Hartsville he was a son of the late Redmon Carroll and Cora Jane Griggs Sullivan. A military retiree with more than 20 years of service with the U.S. Army, he received numerous awards and commendations. He served in the Korean War and Vietnam War. He was awarded two Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal and the Korean War Service Medal. He retired from Burlington Industries and was a member of Kelleytown Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley Catoe Sullivan of Hartsville; sons and daughter-in-law, William C. Sullivan of Myrtle Beach, Brian K. and Michele T. Sullivan of West Columbia; daughter, Robin D. Sullivan of Hartsville; brothers, A. C. Sullivan of Jefferson, Leon “Pete” Sullivan of McBee, Charles Sullivan of Winter Haven, Fla., Ronnie Sullivan of McBee; two grandchildren.

MYRTLE S. JAMES
Funeral services for Myrtle Stuckey James will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 17, 2005, at the Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel. The burial will follow in the Greenlawn cemetery directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. The Rev. Ira Timmons Jr., pastor of New Testament Missionary Baptist Church, will officiate the service.

Mrs. James was born Sept. 24, 1943, in Darlington County, a daughter of the late James and Mertnell Brayboy Stuckey. She was educated in the public schools of the county and graduated from Butler High School in 1961 where she was the valedictorian of her class. After graduation, she continued her education at Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville, N.C. She also attended Florence-Darlington Technical College and received an associate’s degree in business administration.

She was first a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church and later became affiliated with New Testament Missionary Baptist Church. She loved the outdoors and loved to garden. She also liked to travel. She was very civic minded and was active in many projects that benefited Hartsville and the surrounding area.

Surviving to cherish her loving memory are two daughters, Cheryl (Allen) Douglas of Lithonia, Ga., and Nadine James of Hartsville; three sons, Kelcey James and Jason James, both of Hartsville, and Nicolas (Ruby) James of Germany; one brother, Raymond Johnson of Hartsville; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; many other relatives and very dear friends.

JOHN W. THOMAS
LAMAR — Funeral services for John Woodrow Thomas, 87, will be held at 3 p.m. today, June 17, 2005, at Newman Swamp United Methodist Church, with interment following in the church cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home of Lamar.

Mr. Thomas died Wednesday, June 15, at his residence. He was born in Darlington County, son of the late Leonard L. and Lena Raines Thomas. He was a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service and a farmer. Mr. Thomas was past master of the Masonic Lodge and the oldest member of Newman Swamp United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Addie Mae Dorriety Thomas of Lamar, a son and daughter-in-law, Willis L. and Jean Thomas of Lamar; grandchildren, Brantlee (Robbie) Odom of Lamar and Bryan (Shannon) Thomas of the U.S. Air Force; four great-grandchildren, Justin Odom, Kaitlyn Odom, Hannah Thomas and Ella Thomas; one brother, Wade E. (Mary) Thomas, and one sister, Ida Belle Grooms, both of Lamar.

Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by a sister, Vera Lloyd.

Pallbearers were Tommy Garrison, Bobby Goff, Johnny Arant, Alan Biebesheimer, Ronnie Heath and Michael Kelly.

LUCAS M. MORRELL
Funeral services for Lucas Maynard Morrell, 78, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 18, 2005, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Ed Griggs will officiate, and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge.

Mr. Morrell died Sunday, June 12. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Ross and Nora Self Morrell. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was retired from the Merchant Marines.

Surviving are his sister, Fern Hawkins of Columbia; nephews, Gary Morrell of Hartsville, Robert Morrell of Lincolnton, N.C.; niece, Pattie Davis of Columbia.
