BELVA WELCH
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Belva Dorn Welch, 81, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 20, 2005, at Darlington Presbyterian Church with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Welch died at her home, Friday, June 17. She was born in Harlo, Mont., daughter of the late Raymond H. and Mabel Fetterhoff Dorn. She was the widow of Harry Burton Goodson, who was killed in World War II. She was then married for 45 years to the late James “Coach” Jimmy Welch. She retired from the Darlington County School District as a bookkeeper. Mrs. Welch was in various bridge clubs and was a women’s circle member and member of Darlington Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are two sons, Harry B. (Joann) Goodson III of Columbia and James E. (Sherry) Welch of Darlington; two daughters, Barbara (Randy) Welch Haynes of Darlington and Evelyn (Chris) Welch Hanburger of Upper Marlboro, Md.; grandchildren, Burt Goodson of Fremont, Calif., and Joey Goodson of Columbia, Jamie (Page) Fowler of Florence, Josh Fowler of Columbia, John Fowler of Florence, Jay (Jeff) Fabian of Calvert. Md., Kelly (Scott) Taylor of Calvert County, Md., Chris (Tracy) Hanburger Jr. of Apex of N.C., Kathy (Neil) Strieff of Raleigh, N.C., Lauren Haynes of Florence, Christopher Haynes of Charleston; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Ella Mae Cunneen of Butte, Mont.; one brother, Gale (Mary Anne) Dorn of Lewistown, Mont.; also, numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506 and Susan Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Darlington Presbyterian Church, 311 Pearl St., Darlington, SC 29532.

SCOTTIE MATUSE
Graveside services for Scottie Matuse, 24, were held 2 p.m. Monday, June 20, 2005, in Grantham cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mr. Matuse was born in Hartsville to Milton L. and Lorrie Ann Matuse Jordan.

Surviving are his parents of Hartsville; brother, Lex Jordan of Hartsville; paternal grandmother, Mary Ann Jordan, and maternal grandmother, Mary Lee Matuse, both of Hartsville; and a nephew, Hayden Xander Harlow.

MATTIE K. HOFFMAN
Services for Mattie Kay Hoffman, 39, were held 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, 2005, in the chapel of Norton Funeral Home. Burial was in Damascus cemetery.

Born in Hartsville, she was the daughter of the late Isaac J. Hoffman Sr. and Margaret Smith Hoffman.

Surviving is one brother, Ody Hoffman of Hartsville.

ANNIE MAE PETERSON
Funeral services for Annie Mae Peterson, 84, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 25, 2005, at Jerusalem Baptist Church with burial following in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home. The family will receive friends tonight, June 24, from 6 -7 at Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel.

Mrs. Peterson died Friday, June 17, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Sylvester M. and Fannie Johnson Peterson. She was an honor graduate of Butler High School and Tuskegee Institute. She received a master’s degree from New York University and an advanced degree in administration from Frances Marion University. Mrs. Peterson was employed in the Los Angeles School System as a kindergarten teacher. Later, she came back to Tuskegee to serve as the director of student teachers. After a period of time she returned to Hartsville to work in Butler Elementary School. When Washington Street School was built in 1962, she became its first principal.

She was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church where she served as Sunday School teacher and Missionary Society Worker. She was also a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and the NAACP, the NEA, SCEA, DCEA and Darlington County Principal Association.

Mrs. Peterson was preceded in death by her husband, Deacon Morine Peterson Sr.; a son, Monroe Peterson; a daughter, two sisters, Rosa Wiggins and Helen Peterson.

Surviving are a son, Morine (Mary) Peterson Jr. of Bronx, N.Y.; a daughter, Fannie Tajuan Halloway of Hartsville; a daughter-in-law, Lillian Peterson of Kingstree; three sisters, Nettie Lee Peterson of Hartsville, Ella Milligan of Cleveland, Ohio, and Louise Cummings of Raleigh, N.C.; four brothers, Woodrow Peterson of Columbia, Walter H. Peterson Sr. of Miramar, Fla., the Rev. Ernest Peterson of Hardinburg, Ky., and Robert Peterson of Daytona Beach, Fla.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

BESSIE NORRIS THOMPSON
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Bessie Norris Thompson, 58, will be held 3 p.m. today, June 24, 2005, in the Kistler Chapel of Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home, conducted by the Revs. Gary Arnold and Ted Windham, directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Darlington County Memory Gardens.

Ms. Thompson died Tuesday, June 21. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Cecil Norris and Elneda D. Gandy. She was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church and the Fellowship Bible Class.

Survivors include her mother and step-father, Brooks Gandy of Darlington; one son, David (Tonja) Cassidy of Hartsville; one daughter, Theresa (Mike) Miller of Darlington; two brothers, Wayne (Kathy) and Joe (Kay) Norris, both of Darlington; and four grandchildren.

Active pallbearers will be Wayne Mears Jr., Pressley Norris, Andy Norris, Chuck Norris, Jason Norris and Brian Norris.

RAYFORD NICHOLSON
Funeral services for Rayford Nicholson will be held on Saturday, June 25, 2005, at 2 p.m. at the Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. The Rev. Micrin Copeland will officiate the service.

Mr. Nicholson was born Sept. 27, 1963, in Washington, D.C. and departed this life on June 15, 2005. Rayford was predeceased by his biological and adopted parents Thomas and Lillian Smith and Mozella and Johnnie Nicholson.

Rayford was a graduate of Butler High School in Hartsville, and for many years was employed by the Defender Corp., the Darlington County School District and the Darlington County Community Action Agency in Hartsville. He was most recently employed as a correctional officer with the Dickens County Jail System in Crosbyton, Texas.

Rayford was loved by all individuals he associated with and whose lives he touched with his big, quiet smile.

Surviving to cherish his loving memories are his children, Raequella Alexis Nicholson, Calvin Raquon Nicholson, Assyrian Velt’Larant Brunson, Molesey Bridgette Knox-Brunson; his former wife Teresa B. Nicholson of Florence; his sisters Caroline (Gilbert) Nicholson Barnes and Zeola (Michael) Nicholson Foy, both of Wilmington, N.C., and the Hon. Mozella “Pennie” Nicholson, Darlington County Council, of Hartsville; his brothers, Undrey (Verley) Nicholson and Calvin (Marie) Nicholson, both of Tucson, Ariz., and Thomas Charles (Maryanne) Nicholson of Las Vegas, Nev.; a special niece, Nekol (Alvin) Bell-Peterson of Mitchellville-Bowie, Md.; six aunts, Duddie “Polly” Dewitt, Willie Mae Aaron and Susanna Herrington all of Hartsville, Frances Lattimore of Greenville, Edna Perkins and Willa Aaron, both of Washington, D.C.; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and very dear friends.

DANNY DIXON
Graveside services for Danny Ray Dixon, 53, were held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, 2005, at Wilkes Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery. The Rev. David Wilkes officiated and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home was in charge.

Mr. Dixon died Monday, June 20. Born in Darlington County, he was the son of Buck and the late Margaret Dixon.

Surviving are his son, Buck Howard Dixon of Kannapolis, N.C.; daughter, Hope Diane Brown of Apopka, Fla.; brothers, Richard Dixon of McBee, Donald Leroy Dixon; granddaughter, Danyale Brown of Apopka, Fla.

JOANN PHILLIPS HOUGH
Funeral services for Joann Phillips Hough were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 26, 2005, at Antioch Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Young and Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.

Mrs. Hough, 43 died, Thursday, June 23, at her residence after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of Isaiah and Martha Wilkins Phillips. She received her education in the Darlington County public school system and was a member of Antioch Baptist Church.

Surviving other than her parents of McBee, are her husband, Micheal Hough of Bethune; three children, Angel Denise Phillips of Hartsville, Rego Santonio Phillips of Lamar and Cherita Ann Phillips of McBee; five sisters, Gwendolyn (Robert) McCoy of Hartsville, Stella (Eddie) Turner, Sherby J. (Willie) Caldwell, Ruby (Edward) Isaac and Bonnie (Dennis) Isaac, all of McBee; four brothers, Isaiah (Betty) Phillips Jr., Henry Phillips, William (Helen) Phillips and Ennis (Terry) Phillips, all of McBee; three grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

RUSSELL F. TAPSCOTT
NEWMAN, Ill. - Russell F. Tapscott, 64 of Newman, Ill., died on Saturday June 25, 2005, at his home in Newman.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. today, June 29, at the Joines-Appleby Funeral Home in Villa Grove, Ill. The Rev. Duane Oakley will officiate. There will be no visitation.

Mr. Tapscott was born on Feb. 25, 1941, in Marshall, Ill., a son of Russell R. Tapscott and Helen Freeman Tapscott. He married Patricia Ann Flowers on May 17, 1961, in Darlington. She preceded him in death on Jan. 26, 2004. Mr. Tapscott was also preceded in death by his parents.

Surviving are three sons, Russell C. Tapscott, of Ridge-farm, Ill., John R. Tapscott of Hartsville, David S. Tapscott of Newman, Ill.; two daughters, Patricia Tapscott and Brittany Tapscott of Newman; and three grandchildren, all of Ridge-farm, Ill.

Mr. Tapscott served in the United States Army for six years and was stationed in Korea. He was also employed by Union Pacific Railroad out of Villa Grove, Ill., for 32 years.

Memorials may be made to St. Judes.

SARAH M. MOORE
Graveside services for Sarah Morris Moore, 76, were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 26, 2005, at Magnolia cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Milton Frazier officiating. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home was in charge.

Mrs. Moore died Friday, June 24. Born in Hartsville, she was a daughter of the late Ollie John and Virginia Mae Belle Baxley Morris. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. She loved flowers and animals. Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, 200 E. Woodlawn Rd. Suite 156, Charlotte, NC 28217.

Surviving are her husband, Kell Moore Jr. of Hartsville; daughter, Gayle Moore of Hartsville; sister-in-law, Evelyn Morris of Morriston, Tenn.; nephew, Mitchell Morris of Atlanta, Ga.; niece, Julie Wilder of Morristown, Tenn.

She was preceded in death a daughter, Beverly Kell Moore.

JOSEPH PAUL MCINVILLE
DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Joseph Paul McInville, 53, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, 2005, at Temple Free Will Baptist Church with interment following in Black Creek cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. McInville died Saturday, June 25, at his residence. He was born in Darlington County, son of the late Buster and Lucille Miles McInville. Mr. McInville served his country in the National Guard Reserves for many years and was presently employed with Sun Construction. He was a carpenter who enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and spending time with his family.

Surviving are two sons, Cecil Dewayne McInville of Darlington, Joseph Paul 'Spanky ' (Jenny) McInville Jr. of Hartsville; two daughters, Sunny Renae McInville, Mindy Jo McInville both of Coward; one granddaughter, Makayla McInville; one grandson, Josh Kelley; six brothers, Wayne McInville, Larry McInville, Danny McInville, Mike McIn-ville, Randy McInville and Billy McInville; four sisters, Beverly Street, Kathy White, Wanda Gainey, Tammy Windham and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. McInville was preceded in death by his brother Cecil McInville.

LAMAR PARKER
Funeral services for Lamar Charles Parker, 75, will be held at 11 a.m. today, June 29, 2005, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Don Childers will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park cemetery.

Mr. Parker died Sunday, June 26. Born in Lancaster, he was a son of the late Barney Charles and Evelyn Belvin Parker. He was previously employed with the Hartsville Cotton Mill and Sonoco Products Co. He worked with Danny Ray Lynch and Bucky Lynch in the car business until his retirement.

Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Brenda Parker of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Dianne and Pedro Hall of Hartsville, Crystal and J.B. Jones of Darlington; sisters, Joyce Banks of Memphis, Tenn., Drucilla Clemenger, Amanda Caddell, Lourine Davis, all of Hartsville; brothers, Barney Parker, Jerald Parker, Frank Parker, all of Hartsville, Joe Caddell and Bob Caddell, both of McBee; grandchildren, April Johnson, Ramey Hall, Nicole Loving, Chad James, Christy Weatherford, Charles James Parker, Sherry Spraggins; nine great-grandchildren; mother of his children, Ruby McElveen Parker of Hartsville; companion, Sybil Frances Garland Kelly of Hartsville.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Marlene Tennant.
