Patricia Wilson, 60, died Thursday, July 7, 2005, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at 905 L. Circle, Hartsville.

JAMES LANGLEY
DARLINGTON — James “Jimmy” Edward Langley, 72, died Sunday, July 3, 2005. Graveside funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 7, in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Langley was born in Darlington County, son of the late James Gary and Thelma Lundy Langley. He served his country with the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict and was a transporter for Clanton’s Auto Auction. He was a member of Faith Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving are five sisters, Louise “DeeDee” (Clarence) Norwood of Florence, Sara L. Davis, Brenda (Cecil) Blackmon, Marilyn Truett and Carolyn Langley, all of Darlington; Bobby Gene (Wanda) Langley of Mobile, Ala., Wayne (Joan) Langley of West Deptford, N.J., Jerry (Faye) Langley of Florence, Terry (Mary Lynn) Langley of Darlington and Rodney Heyward of Texas; also, many loving nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Mr. Langley was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara L. Pittman.

Memorials are suggested to Free Will Baptist Home for Children, PO Box 229, Turbeville, SC 29162 or Faith Free Will Baptist Building Fund, 1309 Lamar Highway, Darlington, SC 29532.

ALLEN L. MILLER
McBEE — Allen Leveren Miller, 76, U.S. Army, retired, died July 6, 2005. Funeral plans will be announced by Norton Funeral Home, Hartsville.

ORA DELLE HALL
Funeral services for Ora Delle Pate Hall, 86, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 9, 2005, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Peter Rivera will officiate with burial in Darlington Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends this evening, July 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Swift Creek Baptist Church, 413 N. Center Rd., Hartsville, SC 29550 or Emmanuel Christian School, 1001 N. Marquis Hwy., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Hall died Wednesday, July 6, 2005. Born in Bishopville, she was a daughter of the late Gary C. and Jennie Hall Pate. She graduated from Bishopville High School and was a member of Swift Creek Baptist Church. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Surviving are her husband, Woodrow M. Hall of Hartsville; son, Woody Hall of Hartsville, daughters and son-in-law, Sandra Kelley, Debra and David Andrews, all of Hartsville; sister, Edna Bell Hall of Bishopville; brother, James H. Hyatt of Bishopville; grandchildren, Todd Kelley, Jenny McInville, Barry Andrews, Brad Andrews, Trey Hall, Bridgett Hall; great-grandchildren, Joshua Kelley, Andrew Mattox, Makayla McInville, Carson Andrews, Casey Kelley, Cody Kelley, Chase Hall, Tanner Hall.

She was preceded in death by her brother, John Pate, and sisters, Elmarie Berry and Sallie Windham.

CARL ROBINSON
Funeral services for Carl “Joe” Robinson, 61, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 11, 2005, at Unity Mission Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial followed at Sandy Bluff United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. Elder Fannie Robinson, the sister-in-law of Mr. Robinson, officiated the service.

Mr. Robinson died on Thursday, July 7, at his home on Bell Avenue. He was born April 1, 1944, in Lee County, a son of the late Carlile and Bonnie Kate Spencer Robinson. He was educated in the Lee County public schools and graduated from Ebenezer High School in 1961. After high school, he first worked at Klopman Mills in Society Hill for nearly eight years and was most recently employed with A.O. Smith in McBee. He worked there for over 17 years.

“Joe” as everyone knew him was a very generous, kind hearted and compassionate man. He recently gave his life to the Lord and shared with his brother Richard and others his desire to see his family do the same. He was predeceased by one of his brothers, John Robinson.

Survivors include his beloved family and his wife, Francine Robinson of Bishopville; two sons, James Edward (Robin) Robinson and Michael Robinson both of Bishopville; his daughter, Teressa Robinson of Bishopville; three grandchildren, Chris, Bryant and Quinton, all of Bishopville; his companion, Patricia Huff and their children, Antonio Edwards, Dominic (Chastity) Huff, Brenda Huff and Tiffany Huff, all of Hartsville, and Marco Huff of Atlanta, Ga.; and grandson, Dontrell; five sisters, Shirley (Pete) Thomas of Bishopville, Margaret (Fred) Sansbury and Elder Patricia Prince, both of Hartsville, Jeannette Robinson of Harlem, N.Y., and the Rev. Sylvia Hayes of Durham, N.C.; six brothers, Bishop Robert Lee (Elder Fannie) Robinson and Carnell (Grace) Robinson both of Bishopville, Elder Richard (Cathy) Robinson of Hartsville, Larry (Doris) Robinson of Bridgeport, Conn., Deacon Ronnie (Laverne) Robinson and Levern Robinson both of Durham, N.C.; his sister-in-law, Mamie Robinson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

NORMAN THOMAS III
Graveside services for Norman “Tommie” Thomas III, 57, were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 10, 2005, in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Mr. Thomas died Friday, July 8. He was born in Darlington, son of the late Norman Thomas Jr. and Geneva Barefoot Thomas. Surviving are his sons, Tad (Jennifer) Thomas and Ian Cory (Karine) Thomas of Hartsville; one grandchild.

SHANE MARSHALL
Funeral services for Shane Marshall, 26, were held 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, 2005, at Liberty Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. James E. Beck Jr. officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mr. Marshall died Saturday, July 9. He was born in Hartsville, a son of Leo Elias and Sharon Marshall Wilkes.

Surviving are his wife, Amanda Lane Marshall; daughter, Taylor Marshall; son, Ethan Marshall, all of Hartsville; father of Topeka, Kan.; mother and step-father: Sharon and Allan Wilkes; brother, Gabe Wilkes; sister, Nikki Marshall; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Marshall, Gene Marshall, C.J. Winburn, Louise Gunn, all of Hartsville; father- and mother-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Gene Lane; brother-in-law, Andy Lane of Darlington; six aunts; five uncles.

ALLEN L. MILLER
MCBEE — Memorial services for Allen Levere Miller, 76, who died July 6, 2005, were held at 6 p.m. Sunday, July 10, in the chapel of Norton Funeral Home with Father Karl Roesch officiated. Burial was in Germany Valley cemetery in Mt. Union, Pa.

Mr. Miller was born in Hanover, Pa., a son of the late Maurice and Helen Bentzel Miller. He was retired from the U.S. Army after 27 years of service.

Surviving are daughters, Joyce Marks of St. Augustine, Fla., Sandra Wymer of Elgin, Terri Rhoad of McBee; sons, Troy Miller of Bethune, Kirby Miller of Elgin; brother, Elwood Miller of New Oxford, Pa.; sisters, Relda Pyle of New Oxford, Pa., Gloria Miller of Hanover, Pa.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, James Miller, and a brother, Buddy Miller. Memorials may be made to the Darlington County Council on Aging, 402 Pearl St., Darlington, SC 29532.

PATRICIA WILSON
Funeral services for Patricia Wilson, 60, will be held at 4 p.m. today, July 13, 2005, at Kay Branch Missionary Baptist Church with burial following immediately in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Ms. Wilson died Thursday, July 7, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Willie and Ladell Gilmore Wilson. She received her education in the Darlington County public school system. She was a member of Kay Branch Missionary Baptist Church and several auxiliaries within the church.

Surviving are two sons, Minister Wyndell Wilson and Levar Wilson, both of Hartsville; a special daughter, Janet Wilson of Florence; and one god-daughter, Cordelia P. Brown of Darlington; six grandchildren and a host of other close relatives and friends.

LOUISE BRISTER
Funeral services for Louise Brister, 74, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 11, 2005, at Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial followed in New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Brister died Wednesday, July 6, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Bugga Mason and the late Mary Graham. She received her education in the public schools in the area and was a member of Free Rock Holiness Church in Clio.

Surviving other than her father of Sumter are four daughters, Ida Mae (Titus) Cotton of Darlington, Lillie Neddham and Peggy Ann Bristow, both of Hartsville, and JoAnne Bristow of North Augusta; two sons, Alexander (Jean) Bristow of Atlanta, Ga. and Terry (Chasity) Peterson of McBee; 24 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and a host of other close relatives and friends.

LINDA S. DOWLING
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Linda Sawyer Dowling were held 1 p.m. Saturday, July 9, 2005, in Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Gloria Robinson and the Rev. James L. Brown, Sr. and Howard K. Hammond, officiating. Interment followed in Faith Memorial Gardens, directed by Boatwright’s Chapel On Main.

Mrs. Dowling died Monday, July 4, while visiting with family in Upper Marlboro, Md. She was born Aug. 25, 1954, in Darlington, to the late Curtis and Deloris Sawyer. She was educated in the pubic schools of Darlington and Florence Counties. After graduating among the top 10 students in the class of 1972 from Mayo High School, she attended St. Augustine’s College in Raleigh, N.C. In 1976, she completed her studies there attaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and social welfare along with a minor in social studies. In 1984, she received her Master of Education in elementary education from Francis Marion University. Mrs. Dowling was certified by the College of Charleston in 2002 to teach gifted and talented children.

At an early age, she accepted Christ. She remained a faithful and active member of Lee Street Church of God for much of her life, in which she served in many capacities. These included church secretary, Sunday school teacher, Vacation Bible School director, youth ministry co-director, strategic planning committee chairman, member of the choir and member of the Church Council.

Mrs. Dowling was united in holy matrimony to Henry S. Dowling Jr. on June 26, 1976, and to this union, two sons were born.

For 29 years Mrs. Dowling nurtured and taught children in the Darlington County public school system. She loved teaching and did an excellent job in the classroom. As an extension of her role in the classroom, she was a member of the National Education Association, the S.C. Education Association and the National Council of Social Studies.

Mrs. Dowling loved God, her family, her church and all her students. She will be missed by the many whose lives she touched.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Henry; her two sons, Jeffery and Patrick of the home; six siblings, Raeford (Paula) Sawyer of Cary, N.C., Marshall (Delma) Sawyer of Raleigh, N.C., Curtis (Brenda) Sawyer of Charlotte, N.C., the Rev. Jacqueline Sawyer of Upper Marlboro, Md., Mary Carol (Vincent) Chaplin of Charlotte, N.C., and Vernon (Belva) Sawyer of Florence; her mother-in-law, Virginia Dowling of Darlington; sisters-in-law, Mary (James) McAllister and Henrietta McAllister of Darlington and Virginia (Andrew) Kinder of Bradenton, Fla.; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.

ARCHIE BULL
Funeral services for Deacon Archie Bull were held 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2005, in Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Eugene Thomas, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home.

On Monday, July 4, God called his servant Deacon Bull home to rest from his labor and join the Heavenly choir when every day will be Sunday.

Deacon Bull was born Aug. 10, 1934, in Darlington, to the late James and Clara Bull. He was educated in the public schools of Darlington County. He was married to Josephine Boston Bull, and this union was blessed with four children. His teachings started early in a Christian home and continued at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church where he served diligently on the Deacon Board for 47 years and was a member of the male chorus and the Men’s Brotherhood. He was a member of Friendship Masonic Lodge No. 17 and Ashland Consistory No. 246. A dear friend to all who knew and loved him, he was well-loved by his community and seniors. He had a willing desire to extend a helping hand to the elderly. “S.A., ” as he was affectionately called, was a devoted and loving husband, father, brother and grandfather. As a lover of mankind he will be sadly missed.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Sonoco Products Co. in Hartsville for 34 years.

Those surviving to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 50 years, Josephine B. Bull of the home; his four children, Cheryl D. Bull of the home, Mary (Colon) Abraham of Hartsville, Archie (Windell) Bull of Conway and Joanne Outen of Darlington; six sisters, Mable B. James, Mary Lee James, Celia (the Rev. James) Kelly, Lenora (Edward) Mills, Nancy Jackson, all of Darlington, and Clara Jane Sanders of Timmonsville; three brothers, Thomas (Dorothy) Bull of Darlington, Moses (Mamie) Bull of Warner Robins, Ga., David (Juanita) Bull of Great Falls; five grandchildren, Ashley N. Abraham of Morrisville, N.C., Adrian Bull of Raleigh, N.C., Maurice Bull of Conway, Cherrelle of Hartsville and Allyson J. Bull of Darlington; mother-in-law, Louise Gregg; brother-in-law, Charles Bacote and sister-in-law, Idella Bull; and a host of other family members and friends.

Two brothers, Leonard and Coleman, and a sister, Zuline, preceded him in death.

BERNICE J. GRIGGS
Funeral services for Bernice Johnson Griggs, 86, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, 2005, at Central Baptist Church. The Revs. Tim Coker and Danny Holley officiated with burial in Bethlehem United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Griggs, widow of James C. Griggs, died Sunday, July 10. She was born in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Clarence Alvin and Emmie Rhodes Johnson. She was a member of Central Baptist Church and the Sue Blackmon Sunday School Class. Memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 30 E. 33rd. St., Suite 1100, New York, NY 10016, the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 1131, Fairfax, VA 22038, or to the McLeod Hospice, 1203 Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, James C. and Jackie Griggs of Florence; daughters and sons-in-law, Laura and Mike Burns of Douglas, Ga., Nancy and Steve Chorney of Greenville, Jane Stephens of Darlington; brother, Bruce Johnson of Hartsville; granddaughters, Jennifer Newton, Ashley Stevens, Julie Shealy, Jessica Griggs, Whitney Anderson, Leslie Anderson, Summer O’Neal, Chapell O’Neal; great-grandchildren, Fifth Newton, Davis Newton, Sullivan Shealy. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Glenn Johnson and Tom Johnson and sister, Ray Skipper.

WILLIAM CULPEPER
FLORENCE — William B. Culpeper, 76, died Tuesday, July 5, 2005, at his residence. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 9, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Florence Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Culpeper was born in Darlington County, son of Walter Lee and Tedie Gainey Culpeper.

He served his country with the United States Army and was an auto mechanic. Mr. Culpeper enjoyed people and never met a stranger. He was a member of Community Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Mary K. Culpeper; four sons, William (Terri) Culpeper Jr., Gregory Culpeper, William Joseph Culpeper and Richard Culpeper; four daughters, Patricia C. Sturgeon, Susan C. Reed, Barbara C. Wilson and Lori Culpeper; grandchildren, Tanisha, Tra Lynn, McIver, Dale, Pete, Jennifer, Gregory Jr., Brittany, LesLee, Amy, Eric, Danny and Gene; six great-grandchildren, William, Bryan, Owen, Hannah, R.J. and Abby; one brother, Charles Culpeper; and four sisters, Audrey Rothman, Hazel Byrd, Betty Ann Wallace and Glenda Blount.

Memorials may be made to Community Free Will Baptist Church, 108 Clark Rd., Florence, SC 29501.

EUNICE DeWITT
Graveside services for Eunice Capell DeWitt, 77, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 14, 2005, at Magnolia cemetery with the Rev. Tony Hemphill officiating, and Brown Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends tonight, Wednesday, from 5-7 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to West Hartsville Baptist Church, 1003 W. Carolina Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. DeWitt, widow of William T. “Billy” DeWitt, died Tuesday, July 12. Born in Florence, she was a daughter of the late Willie Frank and Bessie Odom Capell. She was a member of the First Baptist Chruch and was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, William T. (Tommy) and Linda DeWitt Jr.; daughter, Sandra M. (Lynn) DeWitt, all of Hartsville; grandchildren and spouses, William T. (Billy) and Dori DeWitt III of Hartsville, Al Dean and Carmen Davis of Florence; great-grandson, Alexander C. Davis. She was preceded in death by her brother, Willie Frank Capell.

SHANE McALOON
Funeral services for Shane Orrin McAloon, 30, will be held at 6 p.m. today, July 20, 2005, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Ed Griggs will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends prior to and following the services at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Coker College Men’s Basketball, 300 E. College Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.

He proudly served his country as a U.S. Army Ranger, 75th Ranger Regiment, 1st Battalion, during the war in Iraq. He played basketball for Coker College and graduated in 1997, after which he was a basketball coach at Hartsville Junior High School, and Chapin High School, Chapin. He was a loving father.

Shane died Tuesday, July 19. Born in Kingston, N.Y., he was a son of Sue Campbell McAloon and the late Douglas Orrin McAloon.

Surviving are his daughter, Alexis McAloon of Orlando, Fla.; mother of Jacksonville, Fla.; brother and sister-in-law, Scott and Kim McAloon of Summerville; step-brother, Brad VanHoose of Jacksonville, Fla.; uncle and aunt, Don and Linda Campbell of Cedar Key, Fla. He was preceded in death by his father Douglas Orrin McAloon.

The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to all those in Hartsville that made him feel welcome, especially the Hendersons and the Coker College families.
