BERTHA H. DOUGLAS
Funeral services for Bertha Highland Douglas will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5, 2005, at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. The Rev. Edward J. Squire, pastor of Mt. Calvary, will officiate the service.

Mrs. Douglas was born Aug. 10, 1920, in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Charlie and Carrie Johnson Highland. She was educated in the public schools of the county. On Sunday, July 31, 2005, Mrs. Douglas crossed over Jordan into Glory Land. The transition took place at her home in Hartsville.

She was married to the late Rev. Glaskor Douglas, and out of this union God blessed them with 15 children. Three of her children preceded her in death.

Mrs. Bertha was a pillar of strength, a widow in deed, a mother of faith, and a servant with a gift of hospitality. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and interior decorating. She leaves a legacy that will forever be cherished by all of those that loved and knew her.

Survivors include her stepmother, Maggie Thomas; five sons, Charles (Patricia) Douglas and Franklin (Helen) Douglas both of Hartsville, Glaskor (Barbara) Douglas of Woodbury, N.J., James K. (Andrenia) Douglas of Newport News, Va., and Wilheim Douglas of San Diego, Calif.; seven daughters, Gladys (James) Samuel, Arnese Johnson and Annette Douglas all of Hartsville, Carolyn (Gary) Henderson of Grovetown, Ga., Ann (Charles) Holman of Jamaica, N.Y., Brenda (Kenneth) Davis of Springfield Gardens, N.Y., and Carrie (James) Johnson of Indian Trail, N.C.; two brothers, James Thomas of Bensalem, Pa., and Andrew (Sgt. Molly J.) Thomas of Seattle, Wash.; seven sisters, Claire Thomas of Bensalem, Pa., Rosa Lee Taylor of Philadelphia, Pa., Charlie Mae Highland, Dorothy Thomas and Betty Thomas, all of Hartsville, Geraldine (Gary) Wright of Charlotte, N.C., and Catherine (Willie) Douglas of Florence; her sisters-in-law, Viola Thomas, Mae Willis Thomas, Margaret Brockington and Janie Thomas, all of Hartsville, and Mae Wagner of Philadelphia, Pa.; 36 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and very dear friends.

SARAH WINDHAM
Graveside services for Sarah Lyles Tyner Windham, 81, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, 2005, at Magnolia cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Gary Colboch will officiate, and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends this evening, Aug. 5, from 6 to 8 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association Memorials, Box 5216, Glen Allen VA 23058.

Mrs. Windham, widow of Sanders Windham, died Thursday, Aug. 4. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Wesley and Eva Mae McCoy Lyles. She was a member of New Market United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Cecil and Anne Tyner of Pinson, Tenn., Tommy and Debbie Tyner of Jonesboro, Ga., Curtis and Pam Tyner of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Mike Northcutt of Hartsville, Robin and Cliff Lane of Darlington; sisters, Catherine Boan of Florence, Helen Marie Padget of Kentucky, Mae Blake of Ocean Springs, Miss.; grandchildren, Danny Tyner, Kerri Ruth Suter, Tanya Hudson, Del Tyner, Ross Tyner, Nan Johnson, Tina Ferrence, Michael Northcutt, Curtis Tyner Jr., Robert Tyner, Jordan Lane, Ashley Lane; 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son, Wesley 'Mac ' Tyner, and granddaughter, Angie Farmer.

JOHNNIE WRIGHT
McBEE - Funeral services for Johnnie Wright were held on Sunday, July 31, 2005, at 3 p.m. at the Living Church in the Lord Jesus Christ. Burial followed in Pine Forest Memorial cemetery directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Hartsville. Bishop B. L. James officiated the service.

Mr. Wright was born May 30, 1943, in Chesterfield County, the son of Alean Wright. He was educated in the public schools of the county. He worked for the South Carolina Highway Department and retired from there with nearly 25 years of service.

Johnnie was a good friend to many. He enjoyed fishing and working in his garden. He also liked to hang out with his best friend, James Wright. Family and friends will sadly miss him.

Surviving to cherish his loving memory in addition to his mother, Alean Wright of McBee, are his longtime companion, Linda Blackwell of McBee; his wife, Lonnie Mae Wright of McBee; two sons, Jason (Felicia) Wright of Lancaster and William Blackwell of McBee; one daughter, Phyllis (Gary) McDowell of McBee; three brothers, William 'June ' Wright and Richard (Carolyn) Wright, both of McBee, and Ray Wright of Hartsville; two sisters, Annie Outen of McBee and Lanie Mae Murphy of Bethune; three special friends, James Wright, James Pate and Kenneth Seegars; five grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and very dear friends.

BETTY G. ADAMS
Graveside services for Betty Faye Gaddy Adams will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, 2005, at Westview Memorial Park cemetery. The Rev. Lynn Kirkland will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends this evening, Aug. 5, from 5 to 7 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210, or Kelleytown Baptist Church Building Fund, 2609 Kelleytown Rd. Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Adams, widow of William O. 'Red ' Adams died Thursday, Aug. 4. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late John Washington and Nodie Freeman Gaddy.

Surviving are her sons and daughter-in-law, Donald K. Adams of Corpus Christi, Texas, Todd and Charlotte Adams of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Patti A. and Gary T. Taylor of St. Augustine, Fla., Robin T. Adams-Minick and Gerald Minick of Anchorage, Alaska; sister, Claytie Burch; brother, Harland Gaddy of Mt. Croghan; beloved niece, Wanda Deese of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren, Donnie Adams of Columbia, Scottie Adams of Corpus Christi, Texas, Mandy Taylor of Savannah, Ga., Adam Taylor of Boston, Mass., Emily Minick of Anchorage, Alaska, Rachel Minick of Anchorage, Alaska, Will Adams of Hartsville, Tanner Adams of Hartsville.

She was preceded in death by her brothers Kenneth Gaddy, Jack Gaddy and Harold Gaddy and sister, Judy McCallister.

The family of Mrs. Adams wishes to express their deep gratitude to her caregivers for their loving care, and their special touch given to Betty during her illness, Lisa Williams, Arlene Jett, Ernestine McDonald, Patricia Reed, Jannie McMillan and Rose Mary Frazier.

CARRIE P. HARRINGTON
Funeral services for Carrie P. Herrington were held on Saturday, July 30, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Mt. Calvary AME Church. Burial followed in Darlington Memory Gardens. The Rev. Willie F. Graves, pastor of Mt. Calvary, officiated the service.

Mrs. Herrington was born Feb. 17, 1928, in Chester, to the late Porter and Pauline Caldwell Boyd. She was the second youngest of 10 children. At an early age, she gave her life to Christ and joined the Rehobeth A. M. E. Zion Church in Chester. Mrs. Herrington received her early education in the Chester County School System. In 1968, she earned and was awarded her high school diploma from the Butler High School Adult Education Program.

In 1947, the then Carrie Boyd moved from Chester to Hartsville where she resided with her beloved and late sister, Gurtha Mae Vinson. Two years later, on Sept. 29, 1949, she was joined in holy matrimony to the late Henry (Daddy) Herrington and continued to live and raise her family in Hartsville.

She became a member of Mt. Calvary AME Church where she served as a member of the Faithful Builders and the Missionary Society. Carrie was always willing to lend a helping hand to whomever, wherever and whenever she could.

Mrs. Herrington departed this life on July 26, 2005, at Alexandria Hospital, Alexandria, Va. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend.

Those left to cherish her memories, love and affection are her daughters, Gertrude Boyd of Chester; Lillian (Albert) Clarke of Jamaica, N.Y.; her sons, William (Brenda) Herrington of Alexandria, Va.; and Herbert (Melvena) Herrington of Bowie, Md.; one sister, Beatrice Jolly of Baltimore, Md.; three grandsons, Harold Boyd, Michael Herrington and Gerard Clarke; two granddaughters, Lorraine (Kenneth) Simpson and Gayle Herrington; three great-grandchildren; LaTasha Deese, Cody Deese and Lucas Deese; one aunt, Francis Allen of Chester; two sisters-in-law, Carrie Smith of Hartsville and Lena Mae Boyd of Buffalo, N.Y.; one brother-in-law, Donald Herrington of Hartsville; one goddaughter, Anita Samuel; and a host of other family members and friends, including, but not limited to Diana Harrison, Penelope Samuel, Ettie Lou Crawford, Mary Edwards, Selwyn McPhail, the Zemp family and Lucille Thompson.

BILL CAMP
Funeral services for William Luther 'Bill ' Camp Jr., 71, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, 2005, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Jack Cobb Jr. will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight, Aug. 5, from 5 to 7 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association Memorials, Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058.

Mr. Camp died Wed., Aug. 3. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late William Luther and Mae Hayes Camp. He was retired from the U.S. Navy with 22 years of service and was a member of the VFW and DAV.

Surviving are his wife, Carol Gainey Camp of Hartsville; son, William Luther Camp III of Hartsville; daughters, Linda Bridgewater of Kansas, Mary Kathryn Maes of Missouri; sisters, Pat Howe and Betty Walters, both of Hartsville; stepson, Tommy Cassady of Hartsville; grandchildren, Lacy Bridgewater, Ceara Bridgewater, Thomas Maes, Timothy Maes, Jenna Maes and Tiffany Maes.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Bobby Albert Camp, and great-grandchild, Casey LaGene Bridgewater.

HEWITT W. WILLIAMSON
Funeral services for Hewitt W. Williamson, 75, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, 2005, at at Emmanuel Baptist Church. Dr. Gary Colboch will officiate. Burial will be in Magnolia cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be this evening, Aug. 5, from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Williamson died Thursday, Aug. 4. He was born in Hartsville, a son of the late Stephen Wildes and Lake Chapman Williamson. He was retired from Sonoco Products Co. after 47 years of service, was a member of the Old Timers Club, Emmanuel Baptist Church, Living Hope Sunday School Class. He was an avid fisherman and a wonderful husband, father, brother and pop.

Surviving are his wife, Bulah Cassidy Williamson; son, Scott Williamson; daughters, Faith Howle and Julie Copeland; four grandchildren, Nikki Howle, Devonne Copeland, Logan and Carlie McDougald; sisters, Mildred Glasscock and Berdie Galloway; special family friend, Mitzie Blackmon, all of Hartsville.

Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church, 949 N. Marquis Highway, Hartsville, SC 29550.

EDITH M. MERCER
SUMMERVILLE - Graveside services for Edith Modlin Mercer, 87, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5, 2005, from Beaver Dam cemetery in McColl, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be at the graveside.

Mrs. Mercer, who died Aug. 3, was born in McColl, daughter of the late Marcus and Lula Vaughn Modlin. She retired as area secretary from Soil Conservation Service USDA. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in McColl and in recent years attended Bethany United Methodist Church in Summerville. Surviving are her husband, Elmer Storey Mercer Jr. of Honey Brook, Pa.; son and daughter-in-law: Michael L. and Kay M. Mercer of Summerville; granddaughters, Kristina Shay Mercer of Indian Trail, N.C., Catherine Ann Mercer of Asheville, N.C.; brother and dear sister-in-law, Richard and Joyce Modlin of McColl; sister, Elsie Modlin Smith of Dillon; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Frank, Harold and Ben Modlin; sisters, Clara Morrison and Gladys David.

BILL DuBOSE
DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Claude Bill DuBose, 79, were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, 2005, at Central Baptist Church with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. DuBose died at his home, Tuesday, Aug. 2. He was born in Lamar, son of the late Claude and Essie Odom DuBose. He served his country with the United States Navy during World War II and fought in the Invasion of Normandy. Mr. DuBose was a retired jeweler having operated a jewelry store on the square of Darlington for more than 50 years. He was a member of Central Baptist Church and the Harper Bible Class.

Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Tammy DuBose of Darlington; daughter-in-law, Peggy DuBose of Pennsylvania; four grandchildren, Chris (Jennifer) DuBose, Lindsay DuBose, Elizabeth DuBose and Coby DuBose; sister, Pansy Beck of Hartsville; sister-in-law, Ada Blackmon of Glens Fall, N.Y.; and special niece, Ada McCormick of Florence.

C. S. WINBURN
PATRICK - Funeral services for C. S. 'Bean ' Winburn, 83, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5, 2005, at Patrick Presbyterian Church with burial in the Patrick cemetery, directed by Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mr. Winburn died Tuesday, Aug. 2. He was born in Patrick, a son of the late John Alexander and Nora Treacy Winburn. He was a graduate of Cheraw High School and was a retired farmer and rural letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service in Patrick. Mr. Winburn was a member of the Patrick cemetery Committee and was a member of Clemson IPTAY Club for 32 years. He attended Patrick Presbyterian Church. Mr. Winburn was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, having participated in the invasion of the Caroline Islands, Leyte Island, the liberation of Bataan Peninsula, Luzon in the Philippines, and the invasion of Okinawa.

Bean was preceded in death by, in addition to his parents, two sisters, Ellen Winburn Huggins and Catherine Virginia Winburn and by three brothers, Edward Treacy Winburn, John William Winburn and James Noel Winburn.

Survivors are his wife of 39 years, Kathleen Huffstetler Winburn of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael S. Winburn and Bonnie F. Winburn of Bennettsville and Ronald P. Winburn and Pat T. Winburn of Mint Hill, N.C.; four grandsons, Andrew Sundy, Edward Scott, John Alexander and Adam Treacy Winburn; twin sister, Caroline Goffigan of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Jean Huffstetler of Shelby, N.C., and Dorothy Winburn of Cheraw; brother-in-law, Anthony Ferreira of Kings Mountain, N.C.

TERESSA W. HART
DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Teressa Welch Hart, 43, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 5, 2005, in the Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home Chapel, Darlington, conducted by the Revs. Michael Bell and Michael Welch. Burial will follow in Grove Hill cemetery.

Mrs. Hart died Wednesday, Aug. 3, in a local hospital after an illness. She was born in Florence County and was the daughter of Charlie Bud Welch and Mary Frances Stone Welch. She graduated from South Florence High School and was previously employed with Florence-Darlington Technical College. She enjoyed gardening, crafts and was a great cook. She could also outfish all of her friends. Her children were her life 's passion.

Survivors include her husband, Robert M. 'Robby ' Hart Jr. of the home; a son, Joshua Thomas Hart and a daughter, Anna Marie Hart, both of the home; her father, Charlie Bud (Lib) Welch of Socastee; her mother, Mary Frances Welch of Socastee; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bobby and Llewellyn Hart of Darlington; two brothers, Michael L. (Sandy) Welch of Socastee and Robert E. (Nan) Welch of Lynchburg, Va.; two sisters, Marie (Barry) Frick of Coward and Sharal Marsh of Columbia; two sisters-in-law, Lou Hart of Darlington and Lynn (David) Bush of Asheville, N.C.; and 11 nieces and nephews.
