FLOSSIE MAE KNIGHT
Funeral services for Flossie Mae Knight, 63, were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, 2005, at Kay Branch Missionary Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mrs. Knight died Saturday, Sept. 3, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Sumter County, a daughter of the late Richard and Flossie June Robinson. She received her education in the Sumter and Darlington county public school systems and was a graduate of Butler High School.
Mrs. Knight was also a retired employee of Stanley Tools. She was a member of Kay Branch Missionary Baptist Church, Mighty Wonders, Usher Board and a former member of the Willing Workers.
Surviving are her husband, Harvey Knight of Hartsville; three children, Barbara Knight of Irvington, N.J., Chris Knight and Harvey (Linda) Knight, both of Columbia; an adopted son, Isaiah Lee of Atlanta, Ga.; one sister, Rosa Lee Robinson of Sumter; nine grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
WELDON C. LUCAS
Weldon C. Lucas, 78, died Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 307 S. Eighth St., Hartsville.
BENNY WELCH SR.
BISHOPVILLE — Services for Benny Eugene Welch Sr., 74, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2005, at Harmony Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Holland officiating. Burial followed in Bethany cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home, Bishopville Chapel.
Mr. Welch, who died Sept. 11, was born in Bishopville, a son of the late Eugene Welch and Bertha Welch McCaskill. He was a member of Harmony Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and a member of the men’s quartet. He was one of the first coaches of Little League Baseball in Bishopville and coached many young boys on the Lions team for six years. He was an avid baseball fan, loved to fish and hunt, and enjoyed playing golf with his sons and friends and was retired from Kendall in Bethune.
Surviving are his devoted and loving wife of 57 years, Georgia Hopkins Welch; sons and wife, Benny E. (Hank) Welch Jr. (Kathryn), Charles E. Welch (Charlene), Benji K. Welch; daughter, Brenda M. Welch (Danny); sisters, Grace Driggers (Benjie), Beatrice Hopkins, Carolyn Smith, Frances Grantham (Larry); sister-in-laws, Gladys Watkins, Vima Lee Hopkins, all of Bishopville; Lou Doris (Leon) McCoy, McBee; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren.
Mr. Welch was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Welch.

HANK WIESEN
Funeral services for Henry Hattman “Hank” Wiesen, 85, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, 2005, at First Baptist Church. The Revs. Tom Rutan and Monell Smith officiated, and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home was in charge. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 104 E. Dr. Wiesen died Friday, Sept. 9. Born in Palmyra, N.J., he was a son of the late George and Mary Hattman Wiesen. He was a member of the First Baptist Church. He graduated from Indiana University (Pa.) and received his master’s degree from the University of South Carolina, doctoral degree from the University of Maryland, and Th.D from Crozer Theological Seminary. He was an educator in the Darlington County schools and the Montgomery County, Md., schools. He was involved with the S.C. Education Association, was a former professor with Defiance College (Ohio), and was a former pastor at Cedar Creek Baptist Church and Liberty Hill Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Anne Tarte Wiesen of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Marilee and Kenneth Willis Sr. of Sandy Run, Nita and Joseph Williams of Orlando, Fla.; sisters, Fran Parsons and Anne Brown; grandchildren and spouses, Kenneth and Sheila Willis Jr., Bonnie Willis, William and Michelle Willis; great-grandchildren, Katelyn Willis, Lauren Willis, Tyler Willis, Corbin Willis. He was preceded in death by his brother, George Wiesen.
GRACE D. JOHNSON
Services for Grace Davis Johnson, 85, were held on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2005, at 3 p.m. at Fourth Street Baptist Church with the Revs. Jack Epperly and Robert Rivers officiating. Burial followed in Westview Memorial cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Johnson died on Thursday, Sept. 8. She was born in Ruby, a daughter of the late William Thomas and Effie Mangum Davis. She was a member of Fourth Street Baptist Church, former Sunday School Teacher, choir director and GA leader. She was the last of 12 children. Surviving are her husband of 65 years, Troy W. Johnson Sr. of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Fred Stephens of Bethune; son and daughter-in-law, Woody and Irene Johnson of Hartsville; grandchildren, Craig Johnson of Hartsville, Angie Stephens of Charleston.

Graveside services for Raymond Murry Byrd, 78, will be held at noon Saturday, Sept. 17, 2005, at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church cemetery. The Rev. Mr. Byrd, widower of Charlotte Barfield Byrd, died Wednesday, Sept. 14. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late John F. and Lizzie Linton Byrd. He was a retired farmer.
Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, Allen and Judi Byrd, Pete and Debra Byrd, Travis and Joyce Byrd, all of Society Hill; daughter and son-in-law, Dale and John Howle of Hartsville; brothers, John D. Byrd of Frostburg, Md., Connie Byrd of Society Hill; grandchildren and spouses, Allen and Stacy Byrd, Crystal Byrd, Jeff and Laura Byrd, David and Deanna Byrd, Jonathan and Mandy Howle, Justin Howle, T. J. and Jessica Byrd; six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Leon Byrd Sr., Eugene Byrd, Clayton Byrd, Orian Byrd, Don Byrd, Curtis Byrd; and by a grandchild, Chase Byrd.

Funeral services for Coy Carter Jr., 73, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Sept. 16, 2005, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Mr. Carter died Wednesday, Sept. 14. Born in Dillon County, he was a son of the late Coy and Annie Jackson Carter Sr. He was a member of West Hartsville Baptist Church. He was a loving, caring and giving husband and father. He retired from Sonoco after 39-plus years, was a member of the Old Timers Club and previously served in the U. S. Army. He was a lifetime member of Hartsville Masonic Lodge No. 173, a member of the Scottish Rite and the Omar Temple.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley Rogers Carter of Hartsville; son, Coy 'Rusty ' Carter III of Harriman, Tenn.; daughter, Vanessa Carter of Hartsville; sister, Lillian Bryant of Dillon; brother and sister-in-law, Lawrence J. and Pansy Carter of Blythewood; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Elton and Barbara Rogers of Mullins; several nieces and nephews; three special great-nieces and two great-nephews.

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Funeral services for Michael Alan Crockett, 45, formerly of Hartsville, were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2005, in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with pastor Jim Caywood and pastor Steve Best officiating. Mark Coleman, Bill Derrick, Rodney Smith, Glenn Bodnar, Karen Self and Terry Cross served as honorary pallbearers.
Mr. Crockett, a resident of Cleveland, passed away Sunday, Sept. 11, at his home. He was a member of Westwood Baptist Church. He was employed with the Freeman Mortgage Co. in Chattanooga.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Caylor Crockett of Cleveland; children, Sara Beth Crockett and Caylor Michael Crockett; mother and step-father, Janice and Ronald Hines, all of Cleveland; father, C. H. Crockett of Holder, Fla.; two sisters, Terri Mullins of McDonald and Catherine Humphrey of Louisville, Ky; several nieces and nephews also survive.

KATHY L. STEEN
Funeral services for Kathy Lynn Steen, 37, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, 2005, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. James Skipper will officiate. The family will receive friends Saturday, Sept. 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Ms. Steen died Thursday, Sept. 15. Born in Mecklenburg County, N.C., she was a daughter of Albert Junier and Vickie Reaves Steen. She was a loving and caring person and will be greatly missed by her family.
Surviving are her father and mother of Hartsville; brother, Charles Kelly Steen of Hartsville; several aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her son, Albert Wayne Steen.
JOHN BYRD
DARLINGTON — John T. Byrd, 81, entered into eternal rest, Sept. 17, 2005, after a lengthy illness.Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery.
Mr. Byrd was born son to the late John Toye and Henrietta Andrews Byrd. He was a life long member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. Mr. Byrd served with the United States Army, 109 Combat Engineers, during World War II. He was a farmer in his younger years and retired from James River Corp. after 28 years. He enjoyed the outdoors, was an avid golfer and loved repairing and making golf clubs.
Survivors include two sons, John Toye (Marilyn) Byrd III of Darlington and Brian Michael (Sandra) Byrd of Hartsville; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy “Dot” Elizabeth Austin of Charlotte, N.C.; one brother, Earl Thomas (Mary) Byrd of Fuquay-Varina, N.C.
Mr. Byrd is preceded in death by two brothers, Robert H. (Bob) Byrd, Murray F. Byrd and sister, Sarah B. Courtney.

Services for Linda Jean Hartley, 56, will be held at 12 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, in the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home. The Rev. Tim Cole will officiate. Burial will be in Magnolia cemetery. Visitation will be tonight, from 5 to 7 at the funeral home.
Mrs. Hartley, who died Tuesday, Sept. 20, was born in Charleston, W. Va. She was a daughter of the late Matthew and Helen Virginia Phalen Osman.
Surviving are her husband, Robert Michael Hartley Sr.; sons, Michael and Jimmy Hartley; daughter, Mary Hartley, all of Hartsville; brothers, Rusty Serdena, Toms River, N.J., Eugene Serdena, Valencia, Calif.; grandchildren, Brett Michael and Brandon Scott Hartley.

DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Bennie 'Buck ' R. Perkins, 74, will be 3 p.m. today, Sept. 23, 2005, at Southside Free Will Baptist Church, with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Leroy Lowery and directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Perkins died Tuesday, Sept. 20, at his residence. He was born in Effingham, son of the late Willie Joseph Perkins and Flossie Mae Blackmon Perkins Rhodes. He served his country in the Unites States Marines during the Korean War. He was a retired truck driver for Stingray Powerboats. Mr. Perkins was a member of the NRA and the VFW. He attended Southside Free Will Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Judy Fennell Perkins of the home; three sons, Bennie 'Bucky ' R. (Brenda) Perkins of Darlington, Tony (Angela) Perkins of Greer, Eric (Jeri) Perkins of Darlington; two daughters, Pamela (Kevin) Kangas of Tennessee, Lisa (Todd) Mozingo of Moore; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two step-sons; Randy Boyce and Mike Boyce, both of North Carolina; a step-daughter, Connie (James) Ogburn of Darlington; three brothers, Willie 'Bill ' Perkins Jr. of Darlington, Hoyt Perkins and Harry (Helen) Perkins, both of Florence.

Mrs. McKeithan, widow of Lorenzy (Red) McKeithan, died Wednesday, Sept. 21. She was born in High Point, N.C., a daughter of the late Wayne and Lavata Proctor Davis. She was a member of First Southern Methodist Church.
Surviving are her children, Danny McKeithan of McBee, the Rev.
