SOCIETY HILL — A Celebration of Life Bar-B-Que for Margaret Wackerle Jackson, 57, was held from 4 until 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 17, 2005, at the home of Stanley Byrd, 2464 Byrd Road, Society Hill, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Harris Creek Volunteer Fire Department, 2464 Byrd Road, Society Hill, SC 29593 or the Society Hill Library Fund, 473 S. Main St., Society Hill, SC 29593.

Mrs. Jackson died Saturday, Oct. 15. Born in Alexandria, Va., she was a daughter of the late Anthony Robert Wackerle Sr. and Charlotte Theresa McCaw Everett. She was a master gardener, a published writer and an organic farmer. She was the former publisher of the Cheraw Chronicle and was the Aiken Bureau chief for the Augusta Chronicle. She was a former television reporter for WALB Albany, Ga., as the Valdosta Bureau chief.

Surviving are her son and his fiancé, Rob Jackson and Michelle DeHerrera of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughter and son-in-law, Laura and John Ellard of Atlanta, Ga.; sisters, Beth Carey of Gaithersburg, Md., Judy Sobeck of Annapolis, Md.; brothers, Danny Everett of German Town, Md., Steve Everett of Valdosta, Ga., Tony Wackerle of Frederick, Md.; her special friend, Stanley Byrd of Society Hill; stepson and spouse, Matthew and Danielle Byrd of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren, Justin Ellard, Julia Ellard, Ryan Byrd, Vincent DeHerrera and Gabriel DeHerrera.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Kathy Wade.

DR. JAMES SWINDLER
Funeral services for Dr. James M. Swindler, 82, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Oct. 21, 2005, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Tom Rutan will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018.

Dr. Swindler, widower of Guyline Woodley Swindler, died Tuesday, Oct. 18. Born in Sparta, Tenn., he was a son of the late Roy and Maggie Woodley Swindler. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy. He retired as a chiropractor serving the Hartsville community for 40 years.

Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Jim Goff of Winston Salem, N.C.; sister, Bonnie Clark of Sparta, Tenn.; grandchildren, Stephanie Bankston and Jennifer Payne.

MATTIE COE
Memorial services for Mattie Coe, 80, will be at 1 p.m. today, Oct. 21, 2005, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Mrs. Coe died Monday, Oct. 17, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Willie and Mell Rogers Baker. She received her education in the public schools in the area and was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Surviving are six daughters, Grace (Willie James) Davis and Dora (Ronald) Maurer, both of Hartsville, Jacqueline Wright of Maysville, N.C., Lenora Tyler, Emma Jean Coe and Angela (Charles) Sartor, all of Columbia; two sons, Alexander (Connie M.) Coe of Hartsville and Herman (Connie F.) Coe of Lydia; a special friend, Liz Bullock of Lydia; 20 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

FRANCES C. LAWHON
Funeral services for Frances Currie Lawhon, 82, will be held at 1 p.m. today, Oct. 26, 2005, at St. Luke United Methodist Church. The Rev. Tony Medlin will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the St. Luke United Methodist Church, 302 Dunlap Dr. Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Lawhon died Saturday, Oct. 22. Born in Clio, she was a daughter of the late William Augustus and Atlanta Gibson Currie. She was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. She was a past president of the Civitan Club and Civitan of the Year. She was a member of the Hoe and Rake Garden Club, the Mary Ann McCulloch Circle and was a Clemson University Master Gardner. She was a registered nurse in Camden, New York, Marley Electric, A.O. Smith, Sonoco and Sandy Memorial Animal Hospital.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn “Knocker” and Yana Lawhon of Chico, CA, Lewis Lawhon, William Lawhon and Marili Lindler, all of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Ellen and Brant Purvis of Lexington, Martha and David Gifford of Conway; sisters, Gladys Jones of Springfield, Va., Christine Funk of Columbia; grandchildren, Garrett Lawhon, Zane Lawhon, Christopher Gifford, Glenn Gifford. She was preceded in death by her infant son, William Lawhon, her brothers Sam Currie and Buddy Currie; grandchild, Aaron Lawhon.

ALICE CADDELL
Funeral services for Alice Jean Wint Caddell, 65, will be held at 5 p.m. today, Oct. 26, 2005, at Middendorf Baptist Church. The Revs. Don Rhyne and Ed Griggs will officiate with Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home in charge.

Mrs. Caddell died Monday, Oct. 24, 2005. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Perry Thomas and Onnie Odessa Thomas Wint. She was a member of Middendorf Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Richard Lonnie Caddell Sr. of Hartsville; sons and daughter-in-law, Ric and Jean Caddell Jr. of Bethune, Robert Keller of Angelus; daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Dave Key of Apex, N.C.; sisters, Mickey Dampier of Hartsville, Hazel Gray of Lake Tawaki, Texas; grandchildren, Johnny Bryan, Jody Jackson, Aimee McAdoo, Rocky Caddell III, Becky Bryan; nine great-grandchildren.

GROVER GAINEY
DARLINGTON — Grover Gainey, 51, of Dovesville died Thursday, Oct. 20, 2005, in a local hospital. A graveside service was held on Sunday, Oct. 23, in Black Creek cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Gainey was born in Darlington County, son of the late Roosevelt and Geneva Cline Gainey. He was a farmer and had worked for Darlington County and the City of Darlington.

Surviving are five brothers, George (Jennifer) Gainey, John Gainey, all of Darlington, Robert (Peggy) Gainey, Roosevelt Gainey Jr., Ronnie (Annetta) Gainey, all of Dovesville; two sisters, Blanche Gainey of Darlington, Lelia (Ernest) Tyner of Patrick; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday night at the Funeral Home.

JOSHUA G. ELLISON
BISHOPVILLE— Graveside services for Joshua Glenn Ellison, 19, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2005, in the Wells cemetery with the Rev. Robert Griggs officiating, directed by Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home of Bishopville.

Mr. Ellison died Sunday, Oct. 23. Born in Camden, he was a son of Robert Ellison and Glenda Atkinson Ellison. He was a member of Elliott Baptist Church.

Survivors besides his parents include a brother, Charles Ellison of Bishopville; his maternal grandmother, Evelyn Atkinson of Bishopville; aunts and uncles, Nancy and Richard Johann of Richmond, Va., David Ellison of Bishopville and John and Lynette McKenzie of Lynchburg; cousins, Matt McKenzie and Don McKenzie, both of Lynchburg and Ellen Johann and Leigh Johann, both of Richmond, Va.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Glenn Atkinson and his paternal grandparents, Albert and Willie Mae Ellison.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shane Scurry Fund at the First Citizens Bank, PO Box 386, Bishopville, SC 29010.

TERAH SMITH DAVIS
Funeral services for Terah Catoe Smith Davis, 87, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Howard Allen and Lucy Davis officiating. Burial followed in burial in Magnolia cemetery. Memorials may be made to the McLeod Hospice House, 1203 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506 or South Florence Baptist Church, 2720 S. Irby St., Florence, SC 29505.

Mrs. Davis, widow of Maxwell Davis and Charles W. Smith, died Friday, Oct. 21. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late Julius C. and Lenora Dixon Catoe. She was a member of South Florence Baptist Church.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Wilson and Celeste Smith, Furman and Effie Smith, Greg and Gloria Smith, all of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Sybil and Payton Warren of Florence, Dianne and Wes Woodham of Bishopville, Vickie and Edwin Kelly of Hartsville, Gayle and David Chaplin of Hartsville, Pam and Jerry Vereen of Florence; sister, Wilma Driggers of Hartsville; grandchildren, Mitch Smith, Pat Smith, John Smith, Payton Warren, Paxton Warren, Michelle Grantham, Allison Hunt, John Woodham, Jason Smith, Suzanne West, Joan Smith, Brandi Ross, Erika Holland, Emily Cottle, Dani Chaplin, Daniel Smith, Josh Smith, Gregory Campbell, Gina Campbell, Taylor Vereen; 22 great-grandchildren; special friend, Chris Hyler of Florence, SC. She was predeceased by a grandson, Eddie Kelly.

JANICE MAJERCZAK
Funeral services for Janice Maybin Majerczak, 72, were held at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, 2005, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Grover Johnson will officiate, and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge.

Mrs. Majerczak died Saturday, Oct. 15. Born in Philadelphia, Pa., she was a daughter of the late William Maybin and Helene Pierce Corino. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church.

Surviving are her daughters and son-in-law, Janice and Bill Rogers of Hartsville, Kim Zawislak of Philadelphia, Pa.; sisters, Dolores Ruben of Philadelphia, Pa., Chris Corina of Mt. Pokino, Pa.; brothers, Ross Maybin of Pocono, Pa., Billy Maybin of Virginia; grandchildren, Dawn Alexander, Greg Wasnick; great-grandchildren, Kristen Alexander, David Zawislack, Kenzie Alexander, Alex Zawislak, John Alexander and William House. She was preceded in death by her mother Helene Corino, her father William Maybin, her sister Alice Forrest, and her sister Betsy Maybin.

MARJORIE W. BROWN
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Marjorie Wilson Brown, 84, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Oct. 28, in Bay Branch Baptist Church with interment following in the church cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Brown died Wednesday, Oct. 26, in a local nursing home. She was born in Florence County, daughter of the late Charlton Leon and Bertha Welch Wilson, and was the widow of David Gordon Brown. She was a sales clerk for B.C. Moore’s for a number of years and was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Leonard Dave Brown and Kevin (Wyndee) Brown, both of Florence, a daughter, Janet Huggins of Florence, five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two sisters: Dolly Maddray of Charleston and Willie Mae Lee of Timmonsville.

Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by two sons, Russell Brown and Johnny Mack Brown.

ROMA REDFEARN
Funeral services for Roma Pines Waddell Redfearn, 104, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005, at the First Baptist Church Chapel. The Revs. Tom Rutan and Charles Roberts will officiate, with burial in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends this evening, Oct. 28, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Jean Redfearn’s home, 112 Lanier Dr. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Lawton Building Fund or the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 104 E. Home Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Redfearn, widow of James Berry Redfearn Sr., died Wednesday, Oct. 26. Born in Anson County, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Eddie G. and Lilla Hancock Waddell. She was the oldest member of First Baptist Church.

Surviving are her sisters, Miriam Roush of Norwood, N.C., Marguerite Rowan of Ansonville, N.C.; brother, Eddie G. Waddell Jr. of Atlantic Beach, N.C.; daughter-in-laws, Jean Hunter Redfearn of Hartsville, Jean Lutz Redfearn of Beaufort; niece, Edwina Webster of Eden, N.C.; grandchildren, Brucie Pennington, Harriet Gupton, James Redfearn III, Kathy Brown, Chuck Redfearn Jr.; 13 great-grandchildren.

MILDRED G. LUNDY
BLYTHEWOOD — Funeral services for Mildred Gainey Lundy, 79, were held at 1 p.m.Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2005, at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel, with Dr. Ben Newman officiating. Burial followed in Hillcrest cemetery directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel.

Mrs. Lundy, wife of the late P. Woodrow Lundy, died Saturday, Oct. 22, at National Healthcare in Columbia. She was born Sept. 24, 1926, in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Boyd White and Sue Byrd Gainey. She attended Sandy Level Baptist Church in Blythewood and was a retired registered nurse. She was predeceased by three brothers, Clyde Gainey, B.W. Gainey and Harvey Gainey, and two sisters, Julia Gainey and Dorothy Gainey.

Surviving are two daughters, Gwen Paschal and her husband, Bill, of Blythewood, and Pam Osborne and her husband, John, of Columbia; two sisters, Carolyn Richardson of Conway and Marian Adams of Kingsport, Tenn.; one brother, Don Gainey of Hartsville; and two grandchildren, Lacey Paschal and Woody Paschal.

LUCILLE R. DAVIS
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Lucille Reed Davis, 80, formerly of Hartsville, died Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005, after an illness. Local arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

EFFIE ARTHUR
Funeral services for Effie Mae Bevel Arthur were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005, at Mt. Tema Baptist Church. The burial followed at the Darlington Memory Gardens directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. The Rev. Jerome Douglas, the pastor of Mt. Tema, officiated the service.

Mrs. Arthur was born Oct. 15, 1951, in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Marco and Macie Holloman Bevel. She was educated in the public schools of the county and graduated from Butler High School in 1970. She was employed at Fast Track Restaurant as a kitchen supervisor and at Morningside of Hartsville as a server.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Her passing brings sorrow to those who knew and loved her.

Those who are left to cherish the loving memories of Effie Mae include a son, Chuckie McKinney of Charlotte, N.C.; a daughter, Ashley Hunter of Hartsville; seven sisters, Eunice (Willie) Jackson, Shirley B. Davis, and Sarah Tedder, all of Hartsville, Nova Jean Bevel of San Leandro, Calif., Pearlie Mae Williams and Maureen Scott, both of Baltimore, Md., and Macie Lee (Cecil) Sansbury of Bishopville; four brothers, George (Mamie) Bevel of New York City, David (Faye) Bevel of Battle Creek Mich., Otis Lee Bevel of Hartsville and Jerome Bevel of Augusta, Ga.; her grandson, Tyriq McKinney; a special nephew, Frankie Sansbury; a special niece, Michelle Thomas; a special friend, Pamelia Hickman; her confidant, Eugene Edwards; other close relatives and very dear friends.

BYRON L. HUGGINS
Funeral services for Byron Levan Huggins, 65, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Nov. 2, 2005, at First Baptist Church of Pine Ridge. The Revs. Billy Campbell and Jackie Hinson will officiate with burial in First Baptist Church of Pine Ridge cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Pine Ridge.

Mr. Huggins died Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005. Born in Hartsville, he was the son of the late Doode L. and Edith Johnson Huggins. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pine Ridge and served in the U. S. Army from 1965-1967. He was a fun-loving and giving husband, father, , and grandfather.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley Steen Huggins; daughters and son-in-law, Angie Huggins McKenzie and Daren McKenzie, Kerri D. Huggins; sisters and brothers-in-law, Eloise and Keith Blackmon, Ann and Johnny Brown, Patricia and Howard Dampier, Billie and Elton Newman, Sharon and Johnny Sturdivant; grandchildren, Joseph McKenzie, Parker McKenzie, Dani-Reed McKenzie and Mallory McKenzie. He was preceded in death by his brother, Mendel Huggins.
