WILLIE O. JOHNSON
Funeral services for Willie Ogilvia Johnson were held on Monday, Oct. 31, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church. The burial followed in Green Lawn cemetery directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. with the Rev. Kenneth Nelson, pastor, officiating.

Willie, affectionately known as “Ted, ” “W.O.” and “Poppy, ” was born in Greenwood on Oct. 24, 1942, to the union of the late Monroe James Johnson of Mullins and Mary Frances Johnson of Ware Shoals. He was the oldest of four children. He lived in South Carolina during most of his early life and has lived in New Orleans for the past 34 years.

He received his education in the South Carolina public school system. He graduated from Butler High School in Hartsville in 1960. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in architecture in 1965 from Hampton University in Hampton, Va. While at Hampton, Willie was enrolled in the ROTC program and the National Society of Pershing Rifles. Upon graduating from Hampton University, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army. He began his engineering career in 1965 as a construction engineer with the United States Army Corp of Engineers. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam.

In 1962, he met Glenda Stein of Ft. Worth, Texas, in Ashland, N.H., where they were student workers at Rockywold Camp. Willie and Glenda united in holy matrimony on June 25, 1967. From this union they were blessed with three children, Garreth Monroe, Garron Matthew and Gennith Minet.

In 1973, Willie received a Master of Science degree in civil engineering from the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio. Willie was a licensed structural/civil engineer in Louisiana, Alabama, California and Virginia. He later participated in continuing education programs at Louisiana State University, Tulane University, Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Texas. He held membership in the American Society of Civil Engineers and Louisiana Engineering Society.

W.O. Johnson & Associates Engineering Consultants was established in 1980. As president, his professional experiences included 38 years of diversified architectural, civil and engineering design/construction management experience on projects spanning from the development of a 2, 500-man military base to the design of a $2.5 million airport facilities renovation. Other experiences included design and construction administration responsibilities for office buildings, bridges, recreational facilities, storm drainage structures, airport facilities and pavements, streets construction and prison facilities. In 2004, Willie received the Mayor’s Minority Business Award recognizing excellence for the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport for Transportation Services.

Willie believed firmly in serving others and the doctrine and teachings of Jesus. He was an active member of Bethany United Methodist Church for 34 years. He served as the teacher of the adult Sunday school class, chairman of the finance committee, church council and member of the building committee. Willie also served “The children of the world” in various capacities within the Kiwanis International organization as president of Ponchatrain Kiwanis and was awarded “Kiwanian of The Year.” As a proud Hamptonian, Willie served as president of the New Orleans Alumni Chapter of the National Hampton Alumni Association Inc., Southwest Region representative and alumni recruiter. Willie is responsible for sending several outstanding New Orleans students to his alma mater.

Willie’s generosity and kind heart were an inspiration to his family. Willie was preceded in death by his father, Monroe James Johnson, and brother, Loranza C. Johnson.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife Glenda; children, Garreth, Garron and Gennith; daughters-in-law, Stormy and Tonya; grandchildren, Tyler Matthew and Gabrielle Marie; his mother, Mary Frances of Summerville; one brother, Nolan B. Johnson (Renada) of Langen, Germany; a sister, Stephanie J. Richardson (Thomas) of Summerville; three sisters-in-law, Minnie Barriteau (Joseph) of Queens, N.Y., Burnetta Johnson of Baltimore, Md., and Renada Johnson of Germany; two brothers-in-law; nieces, Candace Barriteau and Tiffany Johnson; nephews, Marcus Richardson, Bryan Richardson, Nolan Johnson Jr. and James Stein; aunts, Odessa Jones, Lucy Bell Johnson and Ida Furnace; and a host of cousins, relatives and friends.

JACKIE TAYLOR
Graveside services for Jacquelin Gibson Taylor, 78, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005, at Magnolia cemetery. The Rev. Tom Rutan officiated and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home was in charge. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 104 E. Home Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Taylor, widow of William Harry Taylor, died Sunday, Oct. 30. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Edwin Lee and Bessie Blackmon Gibson. She was a member of First Baptist Church. She was retired from Winn-Dixie.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, H. Lee and Jean Taylor of Darlington; daughter and son-in-law, Sue Taylor and Lee Woodham of Hartsville; grandchildren and spouse, Reagan Taylor of Columbia, Kristen Taylor and Herb Nicholson of Summerville, Keri Taylor of Columbia, Taylor Woodham of Hartsville, Susan Woodham of Hartsville. She was preceded in death by her sister, Frances Gainey; brothers, Willie Gibson, Edwin Gibson, Leland Gibson, Tom Gibson and Joe Gibson.

ALICE HUMPHRIES
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Alice McInville Bryant Humphries, 88, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005, at Temple Free Will Baptist Church, officiated by Pastor Todd Parrish. Interment followed in Swift Creek cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Humphries died Sunday, Oct. 30. She was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late John and Lucy Blayton McInville. She was married to the late Fonso Bryant and then to the late Fred Humphries. She retired from American Can and was a member of Temple Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving are her son, Manuel (Betty) Bryant of Darlington; grandchildren, Sarah and Jerry Gainey, Gloria and Greg Smith, Joey and Rebecca Tyner, James Tyner and Woodrow Tyner; also, a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Ira Warren.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice House, 555 E. Cheves Street, Florence, SC 29506.

PAULINE LITTLE
Funeral services for Pauline Little, 75, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Nov. 2, 2005, at Antioch Baptist Church. Burial will follow immediately after services in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Little died Friday, Oct. 28, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was a daughter of the late Hardsen and Ester Orcharid Tillmen, and was born in Waysburg, N.C. She received her education in the Union County public school system. She was a longtime member of Faith Tabernacle Prayer Tabernacle until recently joining Antioch Baptist Church.

Surviving are five children, James Little Jr. and Willie James Little, both of Hartsville, Jerry Leach of Camden, Robert Little and Tracey Little, both of Bethune, and Ricky Leach of Virginia; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a host of sisters, brothers and other close relatives and friends.

ISAAC H. WHEELER
CHESTERFIELD — Isaac Henry Wheeler, 57, died Sat. Oct. 29, 2005, at his residence after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at 69 Cranford Lane, Chesterfield.

RUTH P. HARRIS
Funeral services for Ruth Pearl Davis Harris, 92, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Nov. 4, 2005, at Calvary Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. James Atkinson. Entombment will follow at Darlington Memory Gardens Mausolem directed Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home.

Mrs. Harris died Tuesday, Nov. 1. She was born in Darlington County, the daughter of the late Joseph Benjamin and Nonie Stokes Davis. Mrs. Harris was a member of Calvary Baptist Church for many years after transferring her membership from Grace Baptist Church in Florence. She taught Sunday school for over 40 years and was honored for this accomplishment by her friends at Calvary. When Mrs. Harris was not participating in church related activities, she enjoyed gardening and reading.

Survivors include four sons, Norman Bennett (Margaret) Harris Jr. of Garden City, Freddy Ray (Vivian) Harris of Hartsville, Carl Rodney Harris of High Point, N.C., and Edward Allen (Kathy) Harris of Murrells Inlet; two daughters, Connie Ann Harris of Darlington and Betty Geraldine Harris Truett of Mt. Pleasant.

The family suggest memorial be made to United Hospice, 509 South Coit St., Florence, SC 29501.

BRANDON McDANIEL
Funeral services for Brandon McDaniel will be held on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2005, at the Butler High School Gymnatorium. The burial will follow at the Centerville AME Church cemetery directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. Rev. J. L. Rouse, the pastor of Centerville AME Church will officiate the service.

Brandon was born Oct. 28, 1990 in Richland County, a son of Randy McDaniel and Kimberly Little Jessup. He was a ninth grade student at Spring Valley High School in Columbia. He enjoyed school and was a good student. He participated on the “B Team” football team at Spring Valley and was an excellent athlete. Brandon frequently wrote in his journal and a portion of one of recent entries goes like this, ” Yes, I do feel that I have a responsibility to represent Spring Valley in a positive way… People that know how to carry themselves. Another reason is because I want to be one of the ones remembered for doing something good.”

His life and the way he will be cherished are represented in the very words that he wrote. Remembering the good that Brandon did are his surviving relatives. They include his mother, Kimberly Jessup of Charlotte, N.C.; his father Randy McDaniel of Columbia; three sisters, Randi McDaniel and Randiqua McDaniel; both of Columbia, and Brandi Marie McDaniel of Charlotte, N.C.; three brothers, William Edward Miller III and Jordan McDaniel both of Columbia, and Britten O’Bryan Redmond of Charlotte, N.C.; his maternal grandmother, Anita H. Hasty of Charlotte, N.C., his maternal grandfather, Lee Grant B. Little of Columbia; his paternal grandmother, Henrietta Walker of Buffalo, N.Y.; his great-great grandmother from Charlotte, N.C.; and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, other relatives and very dear friends.

ELAINE PERKINS
DARLINGTON — Memorial services for Carol Elaine Perkins, 58, were held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, 2005, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home.

Ms. Perkins died Tuesday, Nov. 1, in a local hospital. She was born in Florence County, daughter of Ada Belle Turner Perkins Barnard and the late Henry Ford Perkins. She was a waitress. Surviving in addition to her mother are three sons, John S. Balas of Columbia, Earl J. Carter and Royce T. Carter, both of Palatka, Fla.; one daughter, Debbie Brewer of Bostwick, Fla.; seven grandchildren; two brothers, James L. “Chip” Perkins of Darlington and John H. “Hank” Kelly of Florence; also, six sisters, Debbie Bateman of Hamlet, N.C., Donna Dennis of Ft. Pierce, Fla., Shirley Barr of Florence, Tammy Ramsey of Myrtle Beach, Pam Floyd and Bonita Johnson both of Florence.

Ms. Perkins was preceded in death by a son, Phillip Allen Balas.

Memorials are suggested to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 332 N. Lauderdale, Memphis, TN, 38105.

LIB GARDNER
Funeral services for Elizabeth Ann “Lib” Griffin Gardner, 70, were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, 2005, at Gum Branch Baptist Church with the Revs. Jeff Gardner and John Helms officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Mrs. Gardner died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005. Born in Union County, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Troy and Ruth Howie Griffin. She was a member of Gum Branch Baptist Church and was a longtime employee of Langston’s Florist.

Surviving are her husband, Jennings C. “J.C.” Gardner of Hartsville; sons and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Betty Eckman of Waldo, Fla., Ray Gardner of McBee; daughter and son-in-law, Von and Johnny Helms of McBee; sisters, Barbara Wallace of Harrisburg, N.C., Brenda Howell of Wingate, N.C., Nancy Gaffney of Augusta, Ga., Vicky Lisenby of Monroe, N.C.; brothers, James Griffin of Peachland, N.C., Billy Griffin of Salisaw, Okla., Ralph Stevens of Monroe, N.C., Charles Stevens of Wingate, N.C.; grandchildren, Tonya Sanford, John Helms, Chanda Helms, Summer Gardner, Ray Gardner Jr., Dylan Gardner; 5 great-grandchildren.

CHESTERFIELD — Funeral services for Isaac Henry Wheeler, 57, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, 2005, at New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Cranford cemetery located in Chesterfield, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.

Mr. Wheeler died Saturday, Oct. 29, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late McKinley and Sadie Bishop Wheeler. He was educated in the Darlington County public school systems and was a graduate of Butler High School. Mr. Wheeler was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church.

Surviving are his spouse, Bessie Mae Cranford Wheeler of Chesterfield; two daughters, Theresa (Gene) Melton of Cheraw and Latasha Pearson of Hartsville; two sons, Valerian (Lisa) Holloway of New Jersey and Barron (Tyisha) Pearson; a step-father, Willie John Johnson of Hartsville; one brother, McKinley Wheeler Jr., of New Jersey; three sisters-in-law, Mary Jones, Patricia Scott and Alean Wright, all of Chesterfield; six brothers-in-law, L.C. Cranford and Dennis Cranford, all of Chesterfield, Dock Cranford of Paterson, N.J.; five aunts Maudie (Ludwell) Campbell and Lugenia Bishop, both of Hartsville; Lizzie Bishop of Patterson, N.J., Marie Lovett and Maggie Burns, both of Washington, D.C.; 12 grandchildren; a host of aunts, nieces, nephews and other closer relatives and friends.

HAZEL G. HALL
Services for Hazel Gainey Hall, 70, who died on Sunday, Nov. 6, 2005, will be held today, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. at Forest Hills Independent Baptist Church with the Revs. John C. Smith and Jim Murray officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Church of God cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Hazel was born in Hartsville a daughter of the late Harry and Lula Griggs Gainey. She was a member of the Forest Hills Independent Baptist Church.

Surviving are children, Kathleen, Joanne and Lula Mae Hall, Norma Jean Rogers, all of Hartsville, Judy Mullins of Darlington, Bobby and Jerry Gainey of Hartsville; sisters, Dora Mae Driggers of Darlington, Grace Watford of Lamar, Eula Lee Mims of Lake City; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

DEBORAH T. HOLLAND
Services for Deborah Teresa (Debbie) Holland, 31, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Nov. 9, 2005, in the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home, with the Rev. Donnie Barrett officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia cemetery.

Mrs. Holland, who died Nov. 6, was born in Chesterfield, a daughter of Curtis and Sharon Key Atkinson.

Surviving are her husband, Tommy Holland; parents; sons, Bobby Curtis and Thomas Gauge Holland; brothers, McKenzie Albert Atkinson, Matthew Eric Key, all of Hartsville; sister, Tracy Bullard, Chesterfield; step-mother, Diane Bullard; step-brother, Junior Grady; step-sister, Mellissa Grady, all of Timmonsville.

HARRY L. GIBSON
Funeral services for Harry L. Gibson, 69, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Nov. 9, 2005, at Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. Gibson died Saturday, Nov. 5, at Lake City Community Hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Washington and Juanita Goodson Gibson. He was educated in the public schools in the area. He was employed with John Bledsoe Law Firm and was a member of Church of God of Sixth Street.

Surviving are one daughter, Polly (Eddie) Best; one son, Bernard (Shonte) Gibson, all of Hartsville; six sisters, Lula Mendez of Lancaster, Pa., Barbara Hall and Arsandra L. Redmond, both of Hartsville, Mary L. Hales of Heidleburg, Miss., Jeanette Lunn and Paulette Lunn, both of Lamar; four brothers, John (Flora) Gibson on Hartsville, the Rev. David Lunn of Southfield, Mich., Edward Lunn of Houston, Texas, and Levern Lunn of Lamar; seven grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

THOMAS LESIEUR
Mass of Christian burial for Thomas Alfred Lesieur, 66, was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2005, at St. Mary 's Catholic Church, Father Karl Roesch, Celebrant. Final commendation and farewell prayers followed in Magnolia cemetery, with Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home in charge.

Mr. Lesieur, widower of Nancy Monahan Lesieur, died Saturday, Nov. 5. Born in Holyoke, Mass., he was a son of the late Alfred and Katherine Thomas Lesieur. He was a member of St. Mary 's Catholic Church and was retired from Sonoco Products Co. with 34 years of service. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a degree in chemical engineering and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. He was a Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus and was the first Knight of the Year. He was a member of the Lions and enjoyed tennis.

Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen and Barbara Lesieur of Mt. Pleasant, T. J. and Cindy Lesieur of Mullins; daughter, Lori Lesieur of Hartsville; sisters, Kathryn Suslik of Agawaum, Mass., Beth Fugate of Williamsburg, Va.; brothers, Alfred A. Lesieur of Springfield, Mass., Christopher Lesieur of S. Hadley, Mass., Joseph Lesieur of Holyoke, Mass.; grandchildren, Tommy Lesieur, Rachel Lesieur, Tyler Odom and Cassie Lesieur.

SUSIE D. HANCOCK
Funeral services for Susie Dixon Hancock, 55, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2005, at Spring Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Buddy Amerson officiating. Burial followed in Chapel Hill Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Mrs. Hancock died Sunday, Nov. 6, 2005. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Coyen and Carolyn Hicks Dixon.

Mr. Middleton, widower of Azile Byrd Middleton, died Saturday, Nov. 5. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Owens and Ethel Rhodes Middleton. He was a charter member of North Hartsville Baptist Church and was retired from Sonoco Products Co.

Surviving are his sons and daughter-in-law, Cecil W. Middleton of Hartsville, Henry R. and Judy Middleton of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Ethel and Abbott Woodham of Lamar, Catherine and Joe Saleeby of Columbia; sister, Irene Taylor of Hartsville; grandchildren, Debbie Johnson, Clint Woodham, Missy Neal, Beth Middleton, Woody Middleton, Windy Vann; eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Sam Middleton; sisters, Margaret O 'Neal, Ruth Middleton, Corrie Sullivan; grandson, Todd Woodham.

IRENE G. McDOUGALD
Services and burial for Irene Grantham McDougald, 80, were held at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, 2005, at Liberty Hill Baptist Church, directed by Norton Funeral Home with the Rev. James E. Beck Jr. officiating.

Mrs. McDougald, widow of Linzie McDougald, died Nov. 4. She was born in Hartsville, a daughter of the late Major and Bessie Galloway Grantham. She was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, Gregg (Jill) McDougald; granddaughter, Kelsey Jordan McDougald of Spartanburg; sisters, Julie and Ruby Stokes, Minnie Lee Euten, Barbara Jean Jefferson, Linda Northcutt, all of Hartsville.
