BUCK DIXON
Funeral services for Buck A. Dixon, 76, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, 2005, at Wilkes Chapel United Methodist Church. The Revs. Randy Jackson and Ronnie Caulder will officiate with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Friday, Nov. 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Dixon, widower of Margaret Freeman Dixon, died Tuesday, Nov. 22. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Burell and Emma Dixon Dixon. He was a member of Wilkes Chapel United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his sons, Richard Dixon of Hartsville and Donnie Dixon; daughter, Joane Runey of Virginia; sisters, Edell Melton of Cheraw, Geneva Gainey of Kannapolis, N.C.; and brother, John Dixon of Hartsville. Special friends who showed love and compassion are James and Teresa Shaw and Johnny and Margie Winburn.

CAROLYN H. SINGLETON
Graveside services for Carolyn Hill Singleton, 76, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005, at Antioch Baptist Church cemetery. The Rev. Ed Griggs officiated and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home was in charge.

Mrs. Singleton died Friday, Nov. 18. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late George K. and Lula Weatherford Hill. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and was retired as a nurse.

Surviving are her husband, Troy Singleton of Mooresville, N.C.; daughter, Diane Brown of Greenville; sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Adrian Flowers of Hartsville.

GEORGE BALFOUR
Funeral services for George Thomas Balfour, 82, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2005, at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church with Fr. Michael Ridgill officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the St. Bartholomew Mission Trip Fund, PO Box 427, Hartsville, SC 29551.

Mr. Balfour, widower of Betty Balfour, died Friday, Nov. 18. Born in Hyde Park, Mass., he was a son of the late James Walter and Hattie Whynott Balfour. He was a member of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church and a Master Mason in East Hampton, Conn. He was a U. S. Navy and U. S. Coast Guard veteran, serving in World War II and the Korean Conflict.

Surviving are his son, Gary T. Balfour of Arusha, Tanzania; daughter and son-in-law, Jean B. and Elias Mixon of Hartsville; sister, Olive Coutier of Billerica, Mass.; grandchildren and spouse, Leslie Thomas and Donna Mixon of Beaufort, Scott Andrew Mixon of Hartsville; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, James Balfour and Robert Balfour.

TILLMAN JOHNSON
Funeral services for Tillman 'Cig' Johnson, 74, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005, at New Providence Baptist Church. The Revs. Rick Schubert and Todd Jeffords officiated with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Johnson, widow of Ada Gainey Johnson, died Thursday, Nov. 17. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late James and Addie Grooms Johnson. He was a member of New Providence Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army and was retired from Galey & Lord.

Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, Ronnie T. and Robin Johnson and David L. and Valerie Johnson, all of Hartsville; sisters, Geneva Heustess of Hartsville, Mazel Brown of Cassatt, Estell Demates of Cayce; brother, Malcolm Johnson of Patrick; grandchildren, Brent Johnson, Katie J. (Jonathan) Anderson, Tyler Johnson, Toni Steen, Jenna Johnson; great-grandchildren, Chafin Logan Johnson, Skylur Anderson; several loved nephews and nieces.

WILKINS BROWN JR.
NORFOLK, Va. - Funeral services for Wilkins Brown Jr. will be held on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2005, at 11 a.m. at the Hebron Church of God in Christ in Norfolk. The burial will follow in a Virginia Beach, Va., cemetery, directed by Metropolitan Funeral Home, 7246 Granby St. in Norfolk, Va. Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Hartsville is handling local arrangements.

Mr. Brown was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Wilkins Brown Sr. and Rosa Bell Richardson Brown. He was educated in the public schools of Darlington County. He joined the Navy in 1943 and served his country during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

Mr. Brown was first a member of Green Hill Baptist Church in Hartsville. In 1942, he moved to Norfolk, Va., and later became a member of Hebron Church of God in Christ. He served as a deacon at the church for more than 15 years.

Surviving to cherish the loving memories of Mr. Brown are his wife, Thelma Annetta Brown of Norfolk, Va.; two sons, Carl (Darlene) Brown of Baltimore, Md., and Michael Brown of Bridgeport, Conn; one stepson, Curtis Lassiter of Norfolk, Va.; four sisters, Azalee Brown of Norfolk, Va., Virginia Lincoln and Lillie Mae Brown, both of Richmond, Va., and Louella Benjamin of Darlington; one brother-in-law, Jimmy Waldron of Richmond, Va.; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren and other relatives and very dear friends.

MARY BONAPARTE
Funeral services for Mary Bonaparte, 85, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, 2005, at New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Bonaparte died Sunday, Nov. 20, at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital in Columbia after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Lish and Hester Kennedy Dundy. She received her education in the Darlington County public school system and was a member of New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Ophelia Bonaparte of Springfield Garden, N.Y.; one son, Calvin (Doris) Bonaparte of Durham, N.C.; two sisters, Fannie K. Graham of Hackensack, N.J., and Amanda K. Bishop of Hartsville; two grandchildren, Jennifer Bonaparte of Springfield Garden, N.Y., and Justin Bonaparte of Miami, Fla.; four special relatives, Elizabeth Dixon, Geneva Cosom, Barbara B. Frazier and Mary Kennedy, all of Hartsville; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

MAE S. WINBURN
Graveside services for Mae Scruggs Winburn, 62, were held at 2 p.m. Sat. Nov. 19, 2005, at New Providence Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home. The Revs. Danny and Jimmy Winburn will officiate.

Mrs. Winburn, who died Thursday, Nov. 17, was born in Florala, Ala., a daughter of Kathleen Thompkins Scruggs Taylor and the late Curtis Scruggs. She was a member of New Providence Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Roy F. Winburn; daughter, Sherri Winburn, both of Hartsville; son, Roy M. Winburn of Green Cove Springs, Fla.; sisters, Karen Morgan of Deatsville, Ala., Kim Peacock of Montgomery, Ala.; brother, Curtis Scruggs of Savannah, Ga.; two grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

THORNWELL GAINEY
Graveside services for Thornwell (Ben) Gainey, 60, were held 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, 2005, in Magnolia cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Thornwell died Friday, Nov. 18. He was born in Hartsville, a son of the late Thornwell Henry and Thelma Shoemake Gainey. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and was retired from Gainey Tool and Machine in Hartsville. Surviving are his wife, Sharon P. Gainey; son, Henry (Tammy) Gainey; daughter, Pam (Rex) Tyner; brothers, Joseph L. Gainey, Eugene (Sandra) Gainey; sisters, Edithann (Harold) Duffee, Roma (J.B.) Gainey; grandchildren, Keri Gainey, Nichlos Gainey, Wil Weatherford, Austin Gainey, Michael Tyner and Kasey Tyner.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Gainey.

CHESSIE LEWIS
DARLINGTON - Chessie Gandy Lewis, 86, died Saturday, Nov. 19, 2005, in a local hospital. Graveside funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21, in Grove Hill cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Tim Coker and directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Lewis was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late Isaiah M. and Lottie Adams Gandy. She was the widow of Julius Stanley Lewis. Mrs. Lewis was formerly employed by Wilson Hospital. She enjoyed reading her Bible and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Central Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, Curtis (Amelia) Lewis of Darlington; a grandson, William (Karen) Lewis of Darlington; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Clara G. Coleman of Darlington and Sadie G. Coker of Hartsville.

Mrs. Lewis was preceded in death by many brothers and sisters.

Memorials may be made to Central Baptist Church, 512 Spring St., Darlington, SC 29532.

NED TURNER
LAMAR - Ned E. Turner, 67, died Friday, Nov. 19, 2005. Funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 21, in Newman Swamp United Methodist Church, with interment following in Windhamtown cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Edward Herlong, and directed by Belk Funeral Home, Lamar.

Mr. Turner was born in Darlington County, son of the late Hughes and Effie Parnell Turner. He had retired from DuPont and was an avid hunter as well as a supporter of Lamar High School Athletics. Mr. Turner was a member of Newman Swamp United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia Morrell Turner of the home; two daughters, Nettie Jane (Dick) Howle of Darlington, Carolyn (Herbert) Jessen of Walterboro; four sons, James (Annette) Odom, Cephas (Cora) Odom, Gene (Mary Ellen) Odom, all of Lamar, Thomas (Carrie) Odom of Society Hill; 15 grandchildren, a number of great-grandchildren, and a sister, Jackie Windham of Lamar.

Mr. Turner was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy Turner.

CECELIA ANN ADCOCK
LOCUST GROVE, Okla. - Memorial services for Cecelia Ann (Epps) Adcock are scheduled for 1 p.m., Friday, Dec. 2, 2005, at the Ft. Gibson American Legion. Interment will be at the Ft. Gibson National cemetery in Ft. Gibson, Oklahoma. Services have been entrusted to the Locust Grove Funeral Home.

Mrs. Adcock departed this life on Thursday, Nov. 24, in Locust Grove, Okla., at the age of 61 years, 1 month, and 29 days. She was born Sept. 25, 1944, in Hartsville, to Onnie E. (Hicks) and Paden Sull Epps.

Mrs. Adcock was a resident of Locust Grove, Okla., for the past 30 years. She retired from Boeing and had served in the United States Army Reserves. She and her husband, Gene, were married for more than 42 years.

Mrs. Adcock is survived by her husband, Gene Adcock, of the home; two daughters, Christina M. Cox and husband Douglas of Middleburg, Fla., and Ginger D. Turcotte and husband Joe of Tulsa, Okla.; two grandchildren, Charles W. Dishong of Missouri; Gabrial M. Holden and husband Cody of Middleburg, Fla.; six great-grandchildren, Ivy Lynn Dishong of Mount Olive, N.C., Jacob Adcock of Tulsa, Okla.; Andrew and Ryan Turcotte of Tulsa, Okla., Alexus Dishong of Missouri; Christopher Holden of Middleburg, Fla., and other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Adcock was preceded in death by her parents, Onnie and Bob Norris.

EDELL KIRVEN
Funeral services for Sara Edell Watford Kirven, 83, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Nov. 30, 2005, at First Baptist Church of Pine Ridge. The Rev. Jackie Hinson will officiate with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Kirven, widow of J. C. Kirven, died Sunday, Nov. 27, 2005. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late John Dudley and Mary Jane Britt Watford. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Pine Ridge.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Raeford and Shirley Kirven of Hartsville; grandchildren, Timmy Kirven, Derrick Kirven, Jason Kirven, Wendy Yarbrough; five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, J.D. Kirven; brothers, J. W. Watford, Calvin Watford; sisters, Media Domaigue, Peggy Johnson, Rita Jackson, Lela Silverthrone; grandchild, Jamie Kirven.

ELOUISE BROWN
Funeral services for Elouise Brown, 72, were held Saturday, Nov. 26, 2005, at Green Hill Baptist Church with burial following in Sunset Memorial cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Brown died Saturday, Nov. 19, at Morrell Memorial Nursing Center after an illness. She was born in Horry County, a daughter of the late Joe H. Scott and Ella Mae Graves Wells. She received her education in the public school systems in the area and also graduated from the School of Nursing in New York. She was a member of Grace Temple and also attended Green Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Roosevelt Brown of Florence; two daughters, Helen (the Rev. Clarence) Byrd Jr. of Hartsville and Linda Rainge Harrison of Roswell, Ga.; two sons, Luther (Louvenia) Rainge of Jacksonville, Fla., and Jimmy (Myra) Rainge of Florence; 16 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a host of other close relatives and friends.

CEDELL DAVIS
Funeral services for Cedell Davis were held on Monday, Nov. 28, 2005, at the Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel beginning at 2 p.m. Burial followed in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc.

Mrs. Davis died on Monday, Nov. 21, at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City after an illness.

Ms. Davis was the fifth child born to the late Eddie and Liller Chavis-Davis on Dec. 12, 1922. She was a native of Bishopville and attended the Lee County public schools.

Her work history began in the rural communities of Alcot and Stokes Bridge in Lee County with her parents and other siblings. At an early age, she married the late J.T. Huggins.

She was the mother of three children. Her oldest son, Willie James Huggins preceded her in death.

To better provide for her children, she moved to Wilmington, N.C., where she worked as a domestic for many years. Later, she relocated to New York City and continued to work in the service industry until she retired in 1992.

Her memory will forever be cherished by her two children, Jessie (Ethel) Huggins of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., and Doris Davis-Lloyd of Jamaica, N.Y.; one sister, Helen (Carlyle) Lymus of Omaha, Neb.; two sisters-in-law, Mary Lee Davis of Lydia and Margaret Davis of Bishopville; six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, nieces; nephews; a host of relatives and many friends.

WELDON JORDAN
Funeral services for Brody Weldon Jordan, 39, were held Monday, Nov. 28, 2005, at 3 p.m. at Kelleytown Baptist Church. Burial was in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mr. Jordan died Thursday, Nov. 24. He was born in Hartsville, a son of Patsy Shumake Jordan and the late Bobby Weldon Jordan. He was employed with Wellman Inc. and was a member of Kelleytown Baptist Church.

Surviving are his mother of Hartsville; sisters, Myra Jordan and Mike Moles of Kinston, N.C., and Teresa (Robin) Sanders of Darlington; nieces, Bobbi and Stephanie Sanders of Darlington.
