ZETHA WITHERSPOON
LAMAR - Mamie Zelta Wilkes Witherspoon, 82, died Monday, Nov. 28, 2005, at Oakhaven Nursing Center in Darlington. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home in Lamar with interment following in Lamar cemetery.

Mrs. Witherspoon was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late Tilman Earl Wilkes and Mamie Jordan Wilkes. She was retired from Lamar Hosiery Mill and the Town of Lamar, where she served each as secretary. She was a member of Lamar United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Harold Allen Childers, whom she married on Dec. 2, 1942. They were parted by his death on Dec. 1, 1966. Mr. Childers was a World War II veteran and owned Eastern Pines Grocery and Service Station in Lamar.

She later married Ted Wister Witherspoon of Lamar on Aug. 31, 1967. They were parted by his death on June 22, 2004.

She lived most of her life in Lamar except during the early years of her marriage to Mr. Childers, which were spent in Myrtle Beach.

Surviving are two brothers: Dillon Wilkes of Timmonsville and Exley Wilkes of Lamar; sons Billy and Bobby Childers of Loganville, Ga.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Memorials are suggested to Lamar United Methodist Church, PO Box 555, Lamar, SC 29069.

CHARLES J. HUNTER
Funeral services for Charles Jerome Hunter, 58, will be held at 12 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005, at Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow services in New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church directed by Young &Young; Funeral Home.

Mr. Hunter died Tuesday, Nov. 29, at Tuomey Hospital in Sumter after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Press and Idella Graham Hunter. He received his education in the public schools in the area and was a member of New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Katrina M. Hunter of Hartsville; two sons, Charles Andrew (Tarsha) Hunter Jr. and Barron Brown, both of Darlington; three sisters, Magnolia (Otis) Littles of Hartsville, Nettie (Joe) Jaunt of Darlington and Lillian (James) Bodrick of Society Hill; two brothers, James (Earlean) Hunter and George Hunter, both of Society Hill; seven grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

MAMIE MOSES
PATERSON, N.J. - Funeral services for Mamie Moses, are scheduled Monday, Dec. 5, 2005, at Community Baptist Church of Love in Paterson, N.Y. Burial will be in the city cemetery, with local arrangements announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Moses, formerly of Hartsville, died Wednesday, Nov. 30, at her residence in New Jersey after an illness. She was the daughter of the late John and Grace Moses.

She is survived by two children, Sonia Moses and Shon Moses, both of Paterson, N.J.; one sister, Shaques Hunnington Paterson, N.J.; two brothers, Calvin Moses of Hartsville and Edward Moses of Bronx, N.Y.; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

ROBERT HAMMONDS SR.
Funeral services for Mr. Robert Hammonds Sr. were held on Monday, Dec. 5, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. The Rev. Frederick Yebuah, pastor of Wesley Chapel, officiated.

Mr. Hammonds was born Jan. 26, 1921, to the late Ezekiel and Nassie Kelley Hammonds. He was the fifth of nine children. He was predeceased by five of his siblings. During the time he was growing up, black children attended schools organized and located in churches. He attended Wesley Chapel School where his family also attended church. In January of 1943, he left home and joined the United States Army and served his country honorably for three years. It was during this time that he met and later married the former Johnnie Mae McGruder. They were united in marriage in 1946. To this union, seven children were born.

Mr. Hammonds worked as a truck driver at the Oil Mill in Darlington until his retirement. He traveled mostly in the states of Georgia and North and South Carolina.

On Jan. 30, 1981, Johnnie Mae, Mr. Hammonds' wife of 31 years, died. He continued to live his life as a single man, cooking, washing clothes, cleaning, grocery shopping, planting gardens, hunting, fishing and going to softball games. He continued to faithfully worship at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee for a number of years until his health began to decline. Mr. Hammonds openly and freely expressed his love and devotion to the Lord.

Cherishing his memory are seven children who love him dearly, LaMaris (Curtis) Eagleton, Yvette Pierce both of Florence, Veronica Hammonds of College Park, Ga., Robert (Freda) Hammonds of Durham, N.C., Chippetta Hammonds of Charlotte, N.C., CWO2 Nimrod (Lorraine) Hammonds of Leesburg, Ga., and Sonya Hammonds of Charleston; one brother, Charles (Doris) Hammonds of Darlington; two sisters, Julia (Robert) Ingram of Los Angeles, Calif., and Katie Foster of White Plains, N.Y.; one sister-in-law, Lealer Hammonds; one aunt, Mary Kelley; 12 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; his dear cousins; other relatives and friends and his hunting companions and friends of many years, Charlie and Joe Plummer. He is also leaving behind a very dear and devoted companion, Modisteen Mack of Darlington.

KATHERINE BRUNSON
DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Katherine 'Cappy' Quattlebaum Brunson, 89, will be at 11 a.m. today, Dec. 7, 2005, at Trinity United Methodist Church with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Brunson died at her home Monday, Dec. 5. She was born in Conway, daughter of the late Paul and Sue Martin Quattlebaum. She was married to the late James Phinney 'J. P.' Brunson Jr. Mrs. Brunson attended Queens College and graduated from Auburn University with a degree in architecture and art. She was an honorary member of Darlington Fireman Rescue Squad and a member of the Pilot Club. She was den mother for the cub scouts for years. A member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Mrs. Brunson was a member of the Lawson-Ward Circle, the Women of the Church and for many years had worked with the children in the nursery.

Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, James P. (Linda) Brunson III of Darlington and Charles Paul (Dianna) Brunson of Little River; grandson, James P. Brunson IV of Darlington; and step-grandchildren, Charlie Knotts and Deanna Byrd.

Mrs. Brunson was preceded in death by an infant son, Danny.

Memorials are suggested to Trinity United Methodist Church Youth Building, PO Box 16, Darlington, SC 29540.

META ROBERTSON
Graveside services for Armeta 'Meta' Tyner Robertson, 87, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005, at Magnolia cemetery with the Rev. Tony Hemphill officiating, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Kalmia Gardens, 1624 W. Carolina Ave., Hartsville SC 29550.

Mrs. Robertson, widow of Eugene Robertson, died Friday, Dec. 2. Born in Hartsville, she was a daughter of the late Aaron 'Shy' and Elmer Rogers Tyner. She was a member of West Hartsville Baptist Church and was retired from Sonoco Products Co.

Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth 'B. J.' and Joseph Coughlin of Marietta, Ga., Bridget and Peter Beck of E. Haddam, Conn.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

DORIS W. LISTER
Funeral services Doris Watford Lister, 80, were held at Wesley United Methodist Church on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2005, at 2 p.m. with the Reverend David Surrett officiating. Burial was in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Wesley Church Building Fund, the Vera King Watford Scholarship Fund at Coker College, or a recipient of your choice.

Mrs. Lister died Saturday, Dec. 3, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Born in Hartsville, she was the daughter of the late Vera King and Lucas F. Watford. A faithful member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Mrs. Lister was an active member of the choir, the Sowell-McIntosh Sunday School Class, and the Rosa Lee Circle. She also had a strong interest in mission work both locally and statewide. She has served as a member of the Pilot Club, People to People, the Soup Kitchen, and Guardian ad Litem. A graduate of Greenville School of Nursing, she continued her studies at Peabody College, as well as the universities of Minnesota, Harvard and Boston where she did doctoral work in psychiatric nursing. Prior to joining the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control as Assistant Director of Public Health Nursing, she served on the faculties of the University of South Carolina and the University of North Carolina. Mrs. Lister moved back to Hartsville upon her retirement in 1990.

She was predeceased by brothers, Furman, Ralph and Thomas Watford; sister, Miriam Watford Harvin.

Surviving siblings are sisters, Sara Francis Watford Hoffmeyer of Dalton, Ga., Connie Watford Ellis of Mullins, and brother, J. Dan Watford Sr. of Hartsville. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews as well as grand nieces and nephews.

REX W. GIBSON
Funeral services for Rex Washington Gibson, 100, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5, 2005, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Randy Gulledge officiated with burial in Westview Memorial Park cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Faith Baptist Church, 231 Faith Rd., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mr. Gibson, widower of Anna Bell Lafferty Gibson, died Saturday, Dec. 3. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Hosea Crawford and Ennie Gandy Gibson. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church and was retired from farming.

Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, Travis and Sara Gibson of Hartsville; Lynwood and Barbara Gibson of Columbia; sister, Penny Smith of Bishopville; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

DOROTHY OWEN
LAMAR - Funeral services for Dorothy Owen, 88, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 5, 2005, at First Church of Nazarene with burial to follow at Skyway Memorial Gardens, Ellenton, Fla., directed by Brown Funeral Home In Bradenton, Fla. Local arrangements were handled by Belk Funeral Home, Lamar.

Mrs. Owen, widow of Francis E. Owen, died Thursday, Dec. 1. She was born May 10, 1917, in Canton, Ohio, the daughter of the late Ernest K. Shickle and Clara Findley Shickle. She was a graduate of Martinsburg (W.Va.) and received a registered nurse's degree from West Baltimore General Hospital School of Nursing.

Mrs. Owen was a loyal Christian and a dedicated wife, mother and nurse, noted for her kind and gentle nature. As a member of the First Nazarene Church of Bradenton, she was active in the choir, the 'Living Christmas Tree, ' teaching and the Women's Ministry.

Mrs. Owen is survived by her son, David B. Owen of Tropicana Products, Bradenton; two daughters, Lynda O. Cole of Bradenton, Fla., Susan O . (Perry) Bell of Lamar; grandchildren, Christopher P. (Amy) Bell and Bryant Bell, all of Lamar; great-grandchild Brent Bell of Lamar; and foster grandchildren, Cassidy and McKayla of Bradenton; a brother, Robert (Dot) Shickle of Hedgeville, W. Va, and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband and brothers, Donald and Harold Shickle.

ELMER A. MARTIN
CLEVELAND, Ohio - A memorial service for Elmer A. Martin, 91, was held Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2005, at 5:30 p.m., at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, in New Philadelphia, Ohio, with Tom Callagher officiating. Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory was in charge.

Mr. Martin, of Dover, and a former resident of both Cleveland, Ohio, and Charleston, died Saturday, evening, Nov. 26, in Union Hospital, Dover. Born Sept. 17, 1914, in Cleveland, he was a son of the late Andrew and Susan Martin Elmer. He was raised in Cleveland and graduated as valedictorian of his class at East Technical High School. He went on to earn degrees from Fenn College, Cleveland State University and Case-Western Reserve University. He was a professional mechanical engineer for Bailey Metex, a division of Babcock & Wilcox, for 37 years.

Mr. Martin was a member of the New Philadelphia Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. He was a former Presiding Overseer of Newburg Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. He very much enjoyed teaching people about the Bible.

He also held a professional membership in the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers, serving many years as treasurer.

Survivors include two daughters, Christine S. Martin of Cleveland, and Cheryl M. (Joseph) Coniglio of Dover; a son, David E. (Rosemary) Martin of Hartsville; two grandsons, David A. (Christine) Martin, and Ashley L.D. (Heather) Martin; two great-grandsons, Andrew Grayson Martin and Cameron Ashtin Martin; a sister-in-law, Wilhelmina Schuller of Port Charlotte, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Frieda Marie Martin, in l999; and by a sister, Elsie Yannie.

GWENDOLYN M. OLIVER
COLUMBIA - Gwendolyn McKinnon Oliver, wife of the late Sewall Kemble Oliver Jr., died after a brief illness on Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2005. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, at Elmwood cemetery, directed by Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Irmo St. Andrews Chapel. The family suggests memorials be made to the S.C. Heritage Trust, the Nature Conservancy, or to a charity of your own choosing.

Mrs. Oliver was born in St. Joseph's Infirmary, in Atlanta, Ga., on March 27, 1908, to the late Essie Elizabeth and Carl Milton McKinnon, of Brunswick, Ga. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to Hartsville.

She will be missed by a network of friends spanning several generations who revere her as the epitome of a true Southern lady with a sense of humor, a rapier wit, and a heart of gold. The twinkle in her eyes will never be forgotten.

She graduated from Agnes Scott College and the School of Social Work at Virginia Commonwealth University, and took graduate classes in social work and education at George Peabody, USC, UNC, and William and Mary.

She taught school in Hickory, N.C., and in Johnston, S.C., did social work in the slums of Richmond by bus, and, at a time when there were no paved roads, she supervised WPA libraries throughout the entire Pee Dee area in a Model A Ford. Later, while working toward a degree in library science, she worked for the South Carolina State Library. She was a long term member of the Assembly, the Junior League Book Club, and Trinity Episcopal Church. In honor of her father and mother, she contributed substantial acreage leading to the creation of the Segars-McKinnon Heritage Trust on Black Creek in Hartsville.

She is survived by three sons, Sewall Kemble Oliver III, Russell Timothy Oliver and Charles McKinnon Oliver; by nine Oliver grandchildren, Kemble McKinnon, Robert Conniffe, Timothy Michael, Jessica Hardy (Goff), Lyn Holmes, Elaine Venable, Victory Augustus, Christina Ogren, and Oleg Anders; and by five Oliver great-grandchildren, George Conniffe, Ellen Bennett, Susan McKinnon, Duncan Phineas and Quinn Delaney.

RICHARD L. SELLERS
CHESTERFIELD - Funeral services for Richard Lynn Sellers, 34, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005, at Clanton Plains Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home of Chesterfield.

Mr. Sellers was born in Chesterfield, a son of Darrell Sellers and Sandra Kay Linton Gainey, and was reared by his great uncle and aunt, Horace and Elsie Linton. He was a welder and pipe fitter.

Survivors are his wife, Donna Kay Huckabee of the home; father, Darrell Sellers of Chesterfield and mother, Sandra Linton Gainey and Danny King of Hartsville; two brothers, Dennis and Sandy Sellers of Chesterfield; grandmother, Katie Linton Burr of Chesterfield; special great uncle and aunt, Horace and Elsie Linton and special cousin, Jewell Linton, all of Chesterfield; three step-sons, Joshua Morton, Kyle Morton and Dalton Burr.

LOUISE GILLIAN
GREENWOOD - Funeral services for Louise Morrell Gillian, 79, were conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005, at Rice Memorial Baptist Church with the Revs. Alvin Hodges and Jimmy Tucker officiating, directed by Blyth Funeral Home . The family will receive friends at the funeral home tonight, Wednesday, Dec. 14, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The body is at Blyth Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15.

Mrs. Gillian, wife of Ernest 'E.C.' Gillian Sr., died Dec. 13, at her home. Born in Hartsville, Dec. 19, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Barney McCoy and Pauline McInville Morrell. She was a graduate of Hartsville High School and retired from Commissioner of Public Works after 19 years of service. Mrs. Gillian had served as a volunteer at Self Regional Medical Center for the last 17 years. She was a member of Rice Memorial Baptist Church and the Lydia Sunday School Class.

Surviving in addition to her husband of 60 years are two sons, Ernie Gillian and wife, Candy, of Greenwood and Mike Gillian and wife, Susan of Belvedere; a brother, Wilbur Morrell of Hartsville; three sisters, Lizzie Stewart of Florence, Mary Cooley and Doris Bateman, both of Hartsville; five grandchildren, Kevin and wife Ashley and Jason Gillian of Belvedere, Paige Hodges and Anna and Ashton Ready, all of Greenwood; four great-grandchildren, Ryan and Camryn Gillian and Carson and Mary Elliott Hodges; a daughter-in-law, Janice McMahan of Abbeville.

Honorary escort will be members of the Lydia School of Rice Memorial Baptist Church and the volunteers of Self Regional Medical Center along with John Hastings, Joe Scott, Ray Witt, Dan Wideman, Jyll Maddox, Jack Simpson, Nay Morrell, Dr. Floyd Hatcher and Dr. Ed Rapp.

DAVID WRIGHT
Funeral services for David Wright, 85, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005, at The Church in the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith Inc. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. Wright died Sunday, Dec. 10, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Luther Wright and Rebecca Hunter Wright. He received his education in the public schools in the area and was a member of The Church in the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith Inc.

Surviving are two daughters, Patricia (Horace) Graham of Middendorf Community and Diana V. (Elder Joe C.) Tisdale of Kingstree; two sons, David Wilson (Gerthine) Wright of the Middendorf Community and Rondey Wright of Colonial Beach, Va.; two sisters, Clara Bell McQueen of Cheraw and Mary Lee Wright of Newark, N.J.; one adopted daughter, Christine Robinson; two adopted sons, Jimmy and Red Easterling; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives, friends and church family.

BETTY S. MACKEY
SOCIETY HILL - Memorial services for Betty Katherine Smith Mackey, 52, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, at New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church. Services will be conducted by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Smith died Saturday, Dec. 10, at Presbyterian Hospital, Matthews, after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late David and Lula Mae Graham Smith Jr. She received her education in the public schools in the area.

Surviving are two daughters, Natasha N. Smith of Far Rockaway, N.Y., and Sheena V. Mackey of Charlotte, N.C.; three sisters, Deloris McCreary of Charlotte, N.C., Mary Lee Artis of New Jersey and Wantinea Virgo of New York; one brother-in-law, Isaac W. Artis of New Jersey; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
