L. 'BUD' ATKINSON
Funeral services with Masonic Rites for John L. 'Bud' Atkinson, 74, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 19, 2005, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Ronnie Caulder, Tommy Browne and Ed Griggs officiated with burial in Magnolia cemetery.

Mr. Atkinson died Friday, Dec. 16. Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late John Muldrow and Elise Howle Atkinson. He served in the United Stated Army and was wounded in the Korean Conflict.

Surviving are his wife, Louise Bailey Atkinson of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, John C. 'Nimp' and Chris Atkinson of Hartsville; sisters and brother-in-law, Margie Atkinson, Sarah Steen, Macey and Albert Kirven, all of Hartsville, Carolyn Baker of Bishopville, Annelle Ravon of Lugoff; brothers and sisters-in-law, Clyde and Doris Atkinson, Allen and Doris Atkinson, all of Hartsville; grandchildren, Misty Atkinson, Casey Atkinson, Kristy Atkinson; great-grandchildren, Christopher 'Runt' and Alison 'Chip;' several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his son and daughter-in-law, Melvin and Janet Atkinson.

VICKIE R. STEEN
Funeral services for Vickie Reaves Steen, 59, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 21, 2005, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. James Skipper will officiate the service with a private burial.

Mrs. Steen died Sunday, Dec. 18. Born in Mecklenburg County, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Jennings Bryan and Ruby Stanley Reaves.

Surviving are her husband, Albert Junier Steen; son, Charles Kelley Steen, both of Hartsville; sisters, Bernice Pressley of Greenville, Barbara Thurston of Bell Haven, N.C. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathy Lynn Steen.

GEORGIANNA WOODS
WINSTON SALEM, N.C. - Georgianna Woods, formerly of Hartsville, died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2005, in Winston Salem after an illness. She was the sister of Perry Davis and Wilkes Davis, both of Hartsville. Local arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

ALBERTA HUNTER
Funeral services for Jacqueline Alberta McDonald Hunter, 74, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2005, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Jeff Gardner and Mitchell Dampier officiated with burial in Westview Memorial Park cemetery. Memorials may be made to the McLeod Hospice House, 1203 E. Cheves St. Florence, SC 29501.

Mrs. Hunter died Saturday, Dec. 17. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Henry Oscar McDonald and Ola Wallace McDonald Suiter. She retired from Hartsville Florist.

Surviving are her son, Guy McDonald of Hartsville; daughter, Jackie Hunter of Darlington; granddaughter, Brittany Gainey; great-grandson, Brantly Williams; nephew, Marshall Gainey; nieces, Ranada Freeman and Livvy Baird. She was preceded in death by her brother, Junior McDonald.

LUNNON McCUTCHEN
Funeral services for Lunnon McCutchen were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, at Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel. Burial followed in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. The Rev. N.F. Sellers, pastor of Peace Tabernacle Baptist Church, officiated the service.

Mr. McCutchen was born in Lee County, a son of the late Hallie and Louvenia Toney McCutchen. He was educated in the public schools of Lee County. At an early age, he joined New Zion AME Church in Wisacky.

In 1951, he was married to Rose McCutchen and then moved to Goldsboro, N.C. While there, he joined The Eastern Chapel M.B. Church and remained a faithful member until his health declined. He was employed with the state of North Carolina and retired in 1982. In 1995, he moved to Florence with his sister, Rosa Cave.

Lunnon was preceded in death by his wife, Rosa McCuthen; four sisters, Lillie G. Haskel, Melissa M. Wilson, Carrie M. Shaw and Minnie M. Owens; three brothers, Harry McCutchen, Willie McCutchen and Levi McCutchen.

Surviving to cherish the loving memory of Lunnon McCutchen are two sisters, Jessie Jacobs of Springfield Garden, N.Y., and Rosa (Nehemiah) Cave of Barnwell; two foster children, Mary Robinson and Isaiah Parrott both of Goldsboro, N.C.; one brother-in-law, one sister-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and very dear friends.

CAROLYN J. NORTON
Funeral services for Carolyn Johnson Norton, 79, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2005, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Milton Frazier officiating. Burial followed in Westview Memorial Park cemetery.

Mrs. Norton, widow of Robert L. Norton, died Friday, Dec. 16. Born in Hartsville, she was a daughter of the late William Carmie and Minara Braddock Johnson. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Women of the Moose and Woodmen of the World. Surviving are her daughter, Bobi C. Norton of North Myrtle Beach; daughter-in-law, Sandy Mayfield Norton of Hartsville; grandchildren, Carol Norton Beard, Richard R. Norton Jr., Colt L. Norton; great-grandchildren, Shuler Bentley and Jake Bentley; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her son, Richard R. Norton Sr.

She was dearly loved by all who knew her. A special thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff at the McLeod Medical Center Darlington.

RUSSELL E. CLARK
Services for Russell Eugene Clark, 56, were held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, in the chapel of Norton Funeral Home. Burial followed in Athens cemetery in Akron, Ind.

Mr. Clark died Thursday, Dec. 15. He was born in Rochester, Ind., a son of the late George and Wilma Robinson Clark. He was retired from Fulton County as a heavy equipment operator and was a Vietnam veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Schreckengost Clark of Hartsville; sons, Jonathan (Ann) Clark of Akron, Ind., Wes Mappin of South Bend, Ind., Russell T. Clark of Hartsville; daughter, Tracey (Brian) Hart of Rochester, Ind.; grandchildren, Justin and Shalee Hart of Rochester, Ind.; brother, Jack Beck of Rochester, Ind.; sisters, Georgia Ann Norman, of Akron, Ind., and Vickie Clark of St. George, Utah. He was preceded in death by a brother, David Clark.

GORDON FITTS
PAWLEYS ISLAND - Funeral services for Gordon McLaurin Fitts, 79, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 23, 2005, at St. Paul's Waccamaw United Methodist Church. The Rev. Milton McGuirt will officiate, and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends today following the service in the church. Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Waccamaw United Methodist Church, 180 St. Paul Place, Pawleys Island, SC 29585.

Mr. Fitts died Tuesday, Dec. 20. Born in Orangeburg, he was a son of the late A. C. and Esther David Fitts. He graduated from the University of South Carolina, was a member of Pi Kappa Sigma fraternity, and lettered in the band playing the trumpet. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict and was retired as a captain in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. He was a past president of the Lion's Club of Brandon, Fla., a past deacon of the First Baptist Church of Brandon, and a member of St. Paul's Waccamaw United Methodist Church of Pawleys Island. He was retired as advertising manager for Winn Dixie after 44 years of service and was a past president of the West Coast Chapter Winn Dixie Alumni.

Surviving are his wife, Edith Biggs Fitts of Pawleys Island; daughters and son-in-law, Cheryl and Norman Will Smith Jr. of Vero Beach, Fla., Michele Fitts of Gahanna, Ohio; granddaughters, Kelle' DiMenna Baker, Ashley McLaurin Smith and Mandi Elizabeth DiMenna.

HELEN RODEFER
Funeral services for Helen Turnage Rodefer, 80, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 23, 2005, at North Hartsville Baptist Church. The Rev. Ladell Humphries and the Rev. Dr. Richard Bailey will officiate, with burial in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to North Hartsville Baptist Church or Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, 1117 Patrick Hwy., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Rodefer died Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2005. Born in Hamlet, N.C., she was a daughter of the late John Walker and Sallie Griggs Turnage. She was a member of North Hartsville Baptist Church, Love and Labor Sunday School Class, the Sophia Nichols II Circle and Antioch Garden Club. She was a caring and loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving are her husband of 60 years, William Ben Rodefer; daughters and sons-in-law, Darlene and Charlie Sams, Denise and Mike Tyner, all of Hartsville; granddaughters, Emily Tyner and Erica Tyner. She was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret Wolfe and brothers, Bud Turnage and Howard Turnage.

MARGARET E. RAINEY
Margaret E. Rainey, 71, died Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2005, at Faith Healthcare Center. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.

ERVIN JAMES
Funeral services for Ervin 'Bubba' James, 83, will be held at noon on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, at Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Kay Branch Missionary Baptist Church, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.

Mr. James, died Sunday, Dec. 25, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Jessie and Lula James. He was retired from Sonoco Products Company.

Surviving are four daughters, Beulah Thomas of Hartsville, Jestean J. Kent of Florence, Lula (Joenathan) M. Black of Wallace, and Annie Deloise Jones of Hartsville; two sons, Charles E. James of Hartsville and Henry (Modestine) James of Lamar; two sisters, Annie Lee Dowdy and Bessie Lee Robinson both of Darlington; two brothers, Oscar B. (Juanita) James of Pollockville, and Issiah James of Baltimore, Md.; 14 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

JIMMY FREEMAN
Graveside services for Jimmy Lane Freeman, 58, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, at Elim United Methodist Church cemetery. The Rev. Edward Herlong officiated, with Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home in charge. Memorials may be made to the Elim United Methodist Church, 3900 Oates Hwy., Lamar, SC 29069.

Mr. Freeman died Sunday, Dec. 25. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late James O. and Doris Lane Freeman. He was a member of Elim United Methodist Church and the Lamar Masonic Lodge. He was retired with 35 years of service from Bell South.

Surviving are his wife, Verna Perry Freeman of Lamar; son, Ryan Freeman of Lamar.

JUNE KETTER JR.
Funeral services for Curley 'June' Ketter Jr. will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30, 2005, at Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow services at New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

BESS HOFFMAN
Funeral services for Margaret Elizabeth Threatt 'Bess' Hoffman, 101, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, at Middendorf Baptist Church with the Revs. Don Rhyne and Ed Griggs officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Middendorf Baptist Church, 2202 Middendorf Church Rd., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Hoffman died Friday, Dec. 23, 2005. Born in Lancaster, she was a daughter of the late Oscar and Lucy Mahaffey Threatt. She was a member of Middendorf Baptist Church. She taught school for many years in North and South Carolina, was a member of the W.M.U. and taught Sunday school. She was honored by the South Carolina Legislature on her 100th birthday with a certificate of appreciation for her dedication to her family, community and state.

Surviving are her husband, Ebbie Hoffman of Hartsville; sisters, Julia T. Lyman of Columbia, Gertrude T. Potts of Florence and Sarah T. Haynes of Moreland, Ga.

RUTH ROBERTSON
Funeral services for Ruth Marie Carlisle Robertson were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, at Wesley Methodist Church in Hartsville. Burial followed at Magnolia cemetery.

Mrs. Robertson, widow of Julius Ducworth 'Robby' Robertson, died Thursday, Dec. 22.

She was born in 1917 in Cookville, Tenn., and was the daughter of Ruth Marie Spates and Professor Maston Thomas Carlisle, who was head of the Coker College Science Department for 35 years. Mrs. Robertson received her BS from Coker College and her master's in chemistry from Peabody College. She taught science at Greeleyville and Hartsville High Schools and was later Professor of Astronomy, Physics and Chemistry at Coker College.

As a lifelong member of Wesley United Methodist Church, she was president of the Altar Guild for 35 years, was active in the church's women's groups and spearheaded the establishment of the Prayer Room.

Mrs. Robertson was active in many local and national organizations. She served as both local and South Carolina state president of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a founder of the Hartsville Community Players, was active for many years in the Darlington County Historical Society and played the standing bass in the Hartsville Community Orchestra. She was a charter member of the Hartsville Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and served as its president, registrar and treasurer; she was also president of the S.C. District of the UDC. Mrs. Robertson was an organizer of the Brigadier General David Rogerson Williams Chapter of the U.S. Daughters of 1812 and a lifetime active member, holding numerous local and state offices.

Remaining family members include sisters Lorraine Spates Carlisle McNair of Aiken and Anne Maston Carlisle Griggs of Athens, Ga.; nieces Mary Earle Blackmon Phillips of Hartsville, Sylvia Lorraine McNair Ratchford of Columbia, Ruthanne DeVore McNair Lucius of Montmorenci, Anne Maston Griggs Swank of Dade City, Fla., and Teresa Leigh Griggs Johns of Athens, Ga.; and nephews Carlisle James McNair of Aiken, Gene Carlisle Griggs of Woodstock, Ga., and Mitchell Lee Griggs of Taccoa, Ga. Mrs. Robertson was predeceased by her sister Mary Clara 'Clack' Thomas Carlisle Blackmon.

ALLEN BOSEMAN SR.
Funeral services for Allen Edward Boseman Sr., 69, were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 26, 2005, at Hartsville Church of God with the Rev. Ronald Smalley officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Boseman died Saturday, Dec. 24. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Clarence C. and Edith Ann Adams Boseman. He was a loving, giving, caring, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Surviving are his wife, Grace Gainey Boseman of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Angie Boseman; daughter and son-in-law, Terry and Mike Smith, all of Hartsville; grandchildren, Trey Boseman, Bradley Steen, Zeke Steen and Belle Steen.

CHARLENA MILLS
SOCIETY HILL - Funeral services for Charlena Mills, 76, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Dec. 28, 2005, at New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Mills died Saturday, Dec. 24, at her residence after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Magnolia Graham and Charlie Bulls. She received her education in the public schools in the area and was graduated from Butler High School. During earlier years she was employed with the Darlington County public school system. She was a member of New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church and the following auxiliaries: the Usher Board and Homebound Committee.

Surviving are four daughters, Calperta (Dennis) Cranford of Society Hill, Allenne (Lee) Buchanan and Glendora Toney, both of Hartsville, and Deloris (Tommy) Johnson of Darlington; two sons, Ronnie (Shayla) Mills of Society Hill and Rodges Mills of Washington, D.C.; one brother, Clyde Benjamin of Hartsville; 35 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

MAUDIE CAMPBELL
Funeral services for Maudie Campbell, 76, were held Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, at New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church. Burial services followed in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Campbell died Thursday, Dec. 22, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Isaac and Margaret Jackson Bishop. She received her education in the public schools in the area and was employed with Morrell Memorial Nursing Center for several years. Mrs. Campbell was also a lifelong member of New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church and the Young Ladies Society.

Surviving are her husband, Ludwell Campbell of Hartsville; two daughters, Tommie (Edward) Davis and Elaine (James) Sims, both of Hartsville; two sons, Joseph Campbell of Hartsville and Keith 'K. Allen' Campbell of Columbia; three sisters-in-law, Lugenia Mae Bishop, Lizzie Mae Bishop and Myrtle Bishop; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
