JACK SWEATT SR.
McBEE - Funeral services for Thomas Edward Sweatt Sr., 73, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005, at McBee United Methodist Church. The Revs. Roger Dodds, David Myers and Thomas Crouch will officiate, with burial in Sweatt Family cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends today, Dec. 28, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Sweatt died Tuesday, Dec. 27. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Wilton Lee and Pearl Kirkley Sweatt. He was a member of McBee United Methodist Church and the American Legion. He retired from DuPont after 35 years of service. He was in the United States Navy serving on the submarine USS Douglas H. Fox.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley Dixon Sweatt of McBee; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas E. and Barbara Sweatt Jr. of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Dianne S. and Frank Plyler of McBee; granddaughter, Nicole P. and Scott Fisk of Columbia. He was preceded in death by his sister Peggy Sweatt Melton.

RICK PEARCE
Funeral services for Frederick Stephen 'Rick' Pearce III, 61, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 28, 2005, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Ed Griggs will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park cemetery.

Mr. Pearce died Monday, Dec. 26. Born in Mineola Long Island, N.Y., he was a son of Mary Hoffman Pearce and the late Fredrick Stephen Pearce Jr. He served in the United States Navy, serving seven years in the United States Nuclear Submarine Services. He was retired from Progress Energy. He was a member of the Hartsville Masonic Lodge No. 173, Hartsville Moose Lodge No. 1770 and the Woodmen of the World.

Surviving are his wife, Rhonda Parker Pearce of Hartsville; sons and daughters-in-law, Brantley E. and Stephney Norris of Hartsville, Bradley P. and Casey F. Norris of Florence; mother of Silver Springs, Md.; sister, Mary Outman of Damascus, Md.; granddaughter, Charley Grace Norris of Hartsville; several nieces and nephews.

DORIS L. BAKER
DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Doris Lofton Baker, 72, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery.

Mrs. Baker died Saturday, Dec. 24, in a local hospital. She was born in Darlington, daughter of the late Clyde Hewitt and Emmie Swann Lofton. She was a waitress and a housewife. Mrs. Baker was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Cindy B. Young and Julia B. Courtney, both of Darlington; grandchildren, Trey (Tanja) Hall, Bridgette Hall, Lindsey (Brent) June, Dale Baker, Blake Courtney; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty L. Boan of Darlington; two brothers, Hugh Lofton of Sumter and Don Lofton of Tacoma, Wash., and special friends, the Bazen Sisters.

Mrs. Baker was preceded in death by a son, Timothy E. Baker, brother, J.C. Lofton, and two sisters, Virginia 'Pee Wee' Baker and Frances L. Mears.

ODESSA CARTER
Funeral services for Odessa Porter Carter, 81, were held at 4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 26, 2005, at St Luke United Methodist Church with the Rev. DeVere Williams and Shelly Holder officiating. Burial followed at noon Tuesday, Dec. 27, in Woodlawn cemetery, Greenville, officiated by the Revs. Stephen and Cynthia Taylor. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. at Clemson United Methodist Church, Clemson, officiated by the Rev. Paul Hutchinson. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. Mrs. Carter, widow of Milford E. Carter, died Saturday, Dec. 24. Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Horace and Leatha Allen Porter. She was a graduate of the Greenville General Hospital School of Nursing and taught at Greenville General Hospital, St. Francis Hospital, Greenville Technical College and TriCounty Technical College. She volunteered at the Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, and the Clemson Downs Health Care Center. She was a member of Clemson United Methodist Church and the Naomi-Rebecca Circle.

Surviving are her daughter, Jeannie Carter Wilkerson of Hartsville; daughter-in-law, Sherry Carter of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.; son-in-law, Mac McCrary of Clemson; grandchildren and spouses, Kerri Carter (Jim) Porter, Dan (Holly) Carter, Carter (Jenny) McCrary, Drew Wilkerson, Billye McCrary; special friend, Allen K. Wood.

She was preceded in death by her sons, Chip Carter and Eugene Carter, daughter, Thea McCrary, and son-in-law, Mike Wilkerson.

DELORES B. GRIGGS
Private graveside services for Delores Bochette Griggs, 68, were held at 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 26, 2005, at Darlington Memory Gardens. The Rev. Ed Griggs officiated with the entombment directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Griggs died Thursday, Dec. 22. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Eddie and Esther Lee Gainey Bochette.

Surviving are her husband, Calvin M. Griggs Sr. of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, Calvin M. and Robin Griggs Jr. of Hartsville; sister, Irene Morrison of Myrtle Beach; nieces, Audrey and Crystal; granddaughter, Jessica Griggs; great-granddaughter, McKenzie 'Mackie' Peavey.

LIZZIE DAVIS
Graveside services for Lizzie Kate Gilbert Davis, 75, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 30, 2005, at Liberty Hill Baptist Church cemetery. The Rev. Bishop Clifton Barfield Jr. will officiate, and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. Memorials may be made to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 981 W. Carolina Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Davis, widow of John H. Davis, died Wednesday, Dec. 28. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late William Rawton and Cora Northcutt Gilbert. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She retired from A. O. Smith Water Products Company as executive secretary. She was a graduate of Hartsville High School and attended Oklahoma State University.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Larry M. and DeNeen Gilbert of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda K. and Chris Bryant of Richmond, Va.; sisters and brother-in-law, Grettie Parrott of Hartsville, Ethelyn and George Locklair of Summerville; sisters-in-law, Helen Gilbert of Hartsville, Sue Davis of Nathalie, Va., Margaret Phillips of Brookneal, Va., Frances Lipscomb of Lynchburg, Va.; grandchildren, April Melissa Gilbert and Amie Gilbert, both of Hartsville, Kathryn Bryant of Columbus, Ga., Dr. Yvonne Corcoran of Albuquerque, N.M.; step-grandchild, Morgan Inman of Hartsville. She was preceded in death by her sons, William Wayne and Mark Leon Gilbert.

CLANIE EDWARDS JR.
Funeral services for Clanie Brazzel (C.B.) Edwards Jr., 75, will be held today, Dec. 30, 2005, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church Chapel with burial in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mr. Edwards, who died Wednesday, Dec. 28, was born in Hartsville, the son of the late Clanie B. Edwards Sr. and Emma Agnes Watford Edwards. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Hartsville Masonic Lodge 173.

Surviving are one daughter, Brenda B. Pugh, of Columbia; two sons, Clanie E. Brown of Fort Mill, David R. Brown of Cheraw; one brother, Bobby M. Edwards of Brownsville; four grandchildren, Kyle Pugh, Julie, Katherine and Caitlin Brown; and a special friend, Sadie Bruton.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association 181 E. Evans St., Florence, SC 29506.

MILDRED NORWOOD
DARLINGTON - Mildred Norwood, 92, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

JESSE PHILLIPS
Jesse Phillips, 53, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 1877 Elmwood Dr., Hartsville.

DANNY MOORE
Funeral services for Kenneth Daniel 'Danny' Moore, 46, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 30, 2005, at West Hartsville Baptist Church. The Revs. Tony Hemphill and Dr. Bev Kennedy will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Moore died Wednesday, Dec. 28. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of Sandra Windham Moore and the late Julian Shull Moore. He was previously the owner and operator of D&D; Pool Service.

Surviving are his sons, Casey Moore of Hartsville, Daniel Moore of Elburn, Ill.; daughter, Amanda Rivera of Darlington; mother of Hartsville; brother, Julian R. 'Randy' Moore of Hartsville. He was preceded in death by a son, Jason Moore.

MARIO FARANO
A memorial service for Mario D. Farano, was held at 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with visitation following the service. The Rev. Ben Gafford officiated. A private burial service will be held at Brevard Memorial Park in Sharpes, Fla.

Mr. Farano, a resident at Morningside Assisted Living in Hartsville, died Jan. 2, at the Hospice House, Florence. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Sept 6, 1922, he was the son of the late Frank and Nancy Labartino Farano, and he grew up in Queens, N.Y. He served in the USAAF, was stationed in Homestead Air Force Base Homestead, Fla., from 1942-1945, and was discharged with an Honorable Discharge.

During his retirement years he had two passions. One was to learn to cook. After he mastered the art of Italian cooking, he wanted to share his food with his family, neighbors and friends. The second passion was to learn how to paint. Therefore, all his friends, family members and doctors have shared some of his work. As his cooking and painting decreased, his sense of humor increased, which kept the staff Morningside and McLeod Hospice on their toes.

Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Vern Myers of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Peg Farano of Colorado Springs, Colo.; grandchildren, Michelle Wrona of Hartsville, Angela (Derek) Strickler of Manitou Springs, Colo., Christopher (Stacy) Myers of River Falls, Wis., and Betsy Myers (Stacy) of Tulsa Okla.; great-grandchildren, Jake, Dylan, Connor, Molly, Emma, Andy, Matt and Katy.

Memorials for Mario Farano may be made to McLeod Hospice, 1203 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.

WILHELMINA GALLOWAY
LAMAR - Funeral services for Wilhelmina Lyles Galloway, 83, will be held 3:30 pm today, Jan. 6, 2006, in Lamar First Baptist Church, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Galloway died Wednesday, Jan. 4, in a local hospital. She was born in Lee County, daughter of the late Haney and Willie Watson Lyles. She worked in the sewing department of the local textile industry. Mrs. Galloway is the widow of Marion L. Galloway Sr. She was a member of Lamar First Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Leonard (Michelle) Galloway of Hinesville, Ga., and Bryan (Robin) Galloway of Lamar; a daughter, Ann (Richard ) G. Bell of Lamar; grandchildren, Angel Watts, Rhonda Thomas, Kathy Jo McEver, Regina Kenijear, Leonard Galloway Jr., Denise Windham, Tonya Jenigan, Jason Galloway and Shawn Galloway; 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles (Rosene) Lyles of Hartsville, Ray (Ann) Lyles of Sumter; two sisters, Naomi Burris of Sumter, Wilma (Ray) Kelly of Bishopville; and a daughter-in-law, Larinda Galloway of Florence.

Mrs. Galloway was preceded in death by a son, Marion L. Galloway Jr., and brothers, Ed, R.W. and Leo Lyles.

MARY ETTA HELMS
PATRICK - Funeral services for Mary Etta Teal Helms, 52, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Jan. 6, 2005, at Cedar Creek Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Inc. of Chesterfield.

Mrs. Helms died Monday, Jan. 2. She was born in Hartsville, a daughter of Frances Tiller Teal of Patrick and the late Robert Allen Teal. She was a graduate of McBee High School and Chesterfield-Marlboro Technical College, and was a medical assistant with Hartsville Diagnostic Associates. Mrs. Teal was a faithful member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church where she was a former teacher in the children's department.

Surviving are her husband, Jackie Helms of the home; one son, Johnnie Helms and Angela Easter of Atlanta, Ga.; mother, Frances Tiller Teal of Patrick; two brothers, Allen (Jackie) Teal of McBee and Terry (Karen) Teal of Patrick; two sisters, Sara (James) Isgett and Debra (Gene) Turner of Patrick; mother-in-law, Loree Middleton Helms of Jefferson; brother-in-law, Johnny W. (Von) Helms of McBee; sister-in-law, Lou Ellen (Ray) Clark of McBee; also a number of nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Division of Gynocologic Oncology, 'Ovarian Cancer Research, ' Duke University Medical Center, PO Box 3079, Durham, NC 27710.

ANNIE JACKSON
Funeral services for Annie Jackson, 57, were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, at Southside Baptist Church. Burial followed services in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Jackson died Friday, Dec. 30, at her residence after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late James Dick Jackson and Mary McFarland. She received her education in the public schools in the area. She was retired from Sara Lee Hosiery and the Saleeby Center. Mrs. Jackson attended Deliverance Mission for Christ of Society Hill.

Surviving are her husband, Gary Jackson of Hartsville; three children, Cynthia (Montana) Walker of Hartsville, Gary (Kisha) McFarland and Kent McFarland, both of Darlington; seven siblings, Beverly (Michael) McFarland of Darlington, Katie (Gerald) Taylor Washington, D.C., Annie (Cal) Frazier, Shirley (Clinton) McCoy, Frank (Doris) McFarland, Henry E. Jackson and Leon (Geraldine) Jackson, all of Hartsville; eight grandchildren and a host of other close relatives and friends.

RUTHIE MAE ADDISON
Funeral services for Ruthie Mae Brown Addison, 67, will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13, 2006, at Kingsville United Methodist Church. Burial will follow services in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Addison died Monday, Jan. 9, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Jessie and Jannie Johnson Rivers. She received her education in the public schools in the area and was a member of Kingsville United Methodist Church.

Surviving are four children, Mary Frances Rivers of Columbia, Jessie James of Meyers, Marie (David) Goodson and Willie Lee Brown, both of Hartsville; one sister, Frances Rivers of Lydia; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and other close relatives.

AMANDA M. GILMORE
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Amanda Mae Gilmore, 89, formerly of Hartsville, died Friday, Jan. 6, 2006, in a Philadelphia hospital.

Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.
