WILLIAM E. JACOBS
William E. Jacobs, 69, died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006, at his residence after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at 533 Lyndale Drive, Hartsville.

JOSEPH W. HODGE
BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. - Joseph W. 'Joey' Hodge, 47, went to be with the Lord Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center as a result of a car accident in 1981.

He was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County and was a son of the late Orville and Ida Hodge. Joey's courage was an inspiration to everyone in his life. His miraculous 25-year survival is a direct result of God's grace and his mother's love and care.

Joey is survived by his three brothers, Richard Hodge and wife, Loretta Jones Hodge, David Hodge and wife, Karen Segars Hodge, and Orville Hodge Jr.; his three sisters, Judy Gray, Eva Brooks and husband, Mike, and special sister Peggy Blevins who cared for him after the passing of his beloved mother. He is also survived by his special sister-in-love, Gayla Hodge, and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

The funeral service was conducted at 4 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 8, in the Akard Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Steve Waycaster officiating. The committal service and entombment followed at 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 9, in the Mountain View cemetery Mausoleum Chapel with R. C. Jones officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Brain Injury Association of America, 8201 Greensboro Dr., Suite 611, McLean, VA 22102. E-mail condolences may be sent to the family at akardfh@akardfuneralhome.com.

JANNIE BELL LARRY
Funeral services for Jannie Bell Larry, 65, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, at Kay Branch Missionary Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Larry died Wednesday, Jan. 4, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Burrell and Bell McCoy Roary. She received her education in the public schools in the area and was retired from Wellman. She was a member of Kay Branch Missionary Baptist Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Loretta (Norris) Evans of Hartsville; four sons, James Larry Jr., Kevin Timothy Larry and Keith (Aurelia) Larry, all of Hartsville, and Lonnie Earl Larry of Charlotte, N.C.; three sisters, Ruby Mack and Bobbie Jean (Roy) Evans, both of Durham, N.C., and Betty Lou (June) Phillips of McBee; two brothers, Burrell Roary Jr. of Newbern, N.C., and Bobby (Willie Mae) Roary of McBee; two uncles, Frank Roary and Bishop James McCoy; one aunt, Mary McCoy; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild and a host of other close relatives and friends.

ROBBIE B. BROWN
FLORENCE - A memorial service for Robbie Bailey Brown, 73, was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006, at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Florence, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Brown died Tuesday, Jan. 3, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was born in Erwin, Tenn., daughter of the late William and Ollie Blankenship Bailey. She was a nurse at Wilson Hospital, Florence General Hospital and then McLeod Hospital until her retirement. Mrs. Brown was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Surviving are her son, David (Karen) Brown of Texas; daughter, Sharon Brown of Florence; and two brothers, Bill Bailey and Fred Bailey.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, PO Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216.

MARY MONTGOMERY
A funeral service in celebration of Mary Wells Montgomery, 92, was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 8, 2006, at the First Presbyterian Church in Hartsville with a private family burial on Monday morning at Hebron Church cemetery near Sumter. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Hartsville, to the Presbyterian Home of Florence, to Kalmia Gardens of Hartsville, or to Hospice of the Pee Dee in Mary's name.

Mrs. Montgomery passed away on Thursday, Jan. 5, at the Presbyterian Home in Florence, after a long illness. Mary was born in Sumter, the first of seven children born to the late Annette Taylor Wells and Winburn Lawton Wells. She earned a triple major in English, biology and math with honors from Winthrop College in 1935. She taught school for more than 30 years, English and math in junior high, the fourth grade, seventh grade and even kindergarten. She excelled as a teacher and thrived on the interaction with her students. She was the consummate teacher both in and out of the classroom. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School at the First Presbyterian Church, was Regent of the Major Robert Lide Chapter of DAR, was a founding member of Pine and Lake Garden Club, and served on many committees in the community. She lived a life of service, graciousness, excellence and strength.

Mrs. Montgomery was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Henry DuBose Montgomery, and by two sisters, Evelyn Wells Hughey and Nettie Wells Shelley.

She is survived by her daughter, Jeannette Alexander and husband John of Hartsville, and by her son Henry DuBose Montgomery Jr. and wife Nancy of Los Altos Hills, Calif.; four grandchildren, J. Robert Alexander Jr., MD, and wife Tracie of Mt. Pleasant; Mimi Alexander of Charlotte, N.C.; and Tracy and Courtney Montgomery of Los Altos Hills, Calif.; and two great-grandsons, Robert Cole and Aidan Wells Alexander of Mt. Pleasant.

In addition, Mrs. Montgomery is survived by five of her siblings, Edith Wells Watson of Orlando, Fla., Louise Wells Wilbur of Jasper, Ga., Lawton Wells of Elgin and Edna Wells Boyd of Albuquerque, N.M.

PEGGY T. EDWARDS
Graveside services for Peggy Therrell Edwards, 58, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006, at Kelleytown Baptist Church cemetery. The Rev. Steve Winburn officiated the services, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

BETTE LYSZ
Funeral services for Bette Morrison Lysz, 67, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Danny Pierce officiated, and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home was in charge.

Mrs. Lysz, widow of Edward Lysz, died Saturday, Jan. 7. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late Edward Preston and Bessie Hall Morrison.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Karen L. Jeffords and Ricky Weatherford of Florence; sister, Willene Gardner of Rock Hill; brothers, Howard E. 'Gene' Morrison, Lloyd F. Morrison, and Robert B. Morrison, all of Hartsville, Edward Harrell Morrison of Monroe, N.C., Bruce H. Morrsion of Charlotte, N.C.; granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Weatherford. She was predeceased by her son, Garrett Lysz.

WILLIAM F. TEAL SR.
PATRICK - Graveside services for William Franklin (Willie) Teal Sr., 71, were held at 3 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, in the Cedar Creek Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home, Hartsville Chapel. The Rev. Homer Hinson officiated.

Mr. Teal, who died Jan. 6, was born in Hartsville, a son of the late Sandy and Lula Byrd Teal. He was a member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church and was retired from the Chesterfield County School System.

Surviving are his wife, Ann Tolson Teal; son, William F. Teal Jr., both of Patrick; niece, Cherith Vansickle of Sumter; granddaughter, Kristen Cox of Maryland.

CLYDE SPIVEY
DARLINGTON - Funeral services for William Clyde Spivey, 78, were held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 8, 2006, in Belk Funeral Home Chapel with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery.

Mr. Spivey died Friday, Jan. 6, in a local hospital. He was born in Dillon County, son of the late John Dewey 'J.D.' and Fannie Brewer Spivey. He served his country in the U.S. Navy, and then was the owner and operator of Spivey's Appliance. Mr. Spivey attended First Church of God. Surviving are his wife, Maudell Foxworth Anderson Spivey; son, Billy (Mary) Spivey of Darlington; grandson, Chris (Lynn) Spivey; a great-grandchild, Lauren Spivey; two step-sons, Jay (Barbara) Anderson of Florence and Tony (Rachel) Anderson of Darlington; two brothers, Robert Spivey of Darlington and Victor Spivey of Florence; sister, Marie McManus of Atlanta, Ga.; a number of nieces, nephews, step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.

Mr. Spivey was preceded in death by his first wife, Bessie J. Spivey, and a stepson, Boyd Anderson.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

MACK RICHARDSON
DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Malcolm 'Mack' Eugene Richardson, 70, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 8, 2006, at First Baptist Church with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery with Masonic Rights, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Richardson passed away Friday, Jan. 6, at his residence. He was born in Sumter, son of the late Norman Selby and Lucile Ingram Richardson Sr. He graduated from St. John's High School in 1953. He was a member of the National Honor Society, served as a marshal and played on the football and baseball teams. He was chosen to play in the Tobacco Bowl in 1953. Upon graduation, he attended The Citadel and then went to work with his father in the family monument business.

Mr. Richardson was a member of First Baptist Church and has served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and director of the Baptist Training Union. He has been a member of the Sanctuary Choir for 52 years.

He served with the South Carolina Army National Guard for 42 years. He was a member of the Non-Commissioned Officers Club and has served as president, and has been treasurer for the past 22 years.

Mr. Richardson was a past president of the Darlington Lions Club and was awarded 'Lion of the Year' in 1970-71.

He was a member of the Darlington Masonic Lodge No. 72 and served as past master in 1963. He was a former member of the Omar Shrine Club and the Red Fez Club, and held several offices.

Mr. Richardson was listed in the 1972 edition of 'Outstanding Personalities of the South.'

He was well known for his Christmas decorations and was featured in the Morning News, the News and Press and on television. He was given the 'Key to the City' on Dec. 6, 2005, for his 'labor of love' for 45 years.

Mr. Richardson enjoyed his grandchildren, collecting trains, watching NASCAR races, fishing, and in the past, golf.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Dawn English Richardson; a son, Jon Michael 'Mike' Richardson; two daughters, Robin R. Pietarinen of Darlington and Brenda R. (Ricky) Barron of Duncan; a brother, Dr. Norman S. Richardson Jr. of Hilton Head and seven grandchildren.

BARNEY STOKES SR.
Services and burial for Barney Melvin Stokes Sr., 62, were held at 4 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, 2006, at Antioch Baptist Church in Kershaw County with the Revs. Joe Long, Sim Smith and Gene Stokes officiating.

Mr. Stokes, who died Jan. 13, was born in Camden, a son of Elma Kennington Stokes and the late William C. Stokes. He was retired from Big Red Fork Lift Parts and was a member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church in Charleston.

Surviving are his mother of Camden; wife, Marie Adams Stokes of Hartsville; son, Barney M. Stokes Jr. of Lugoff; daughter, Ava L. Stokes of Hartsville; brothers: the Rev. Gene Stokes, Charles Stokes, Harold Stokes of Camden and James Stokes of Bishopville; sisters, Helen Walls of Camden and Karen Rhodes of Charleston.

DOMINICK P. BATALLER
READING, Pa. - Services for Dominick P. Bataller, 70, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, 2006, at Auman Funeral Home in Reading, Pa. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Exeter Twp, Pa.

Mr. Bataller, husband of Mary E. (Dinkelberger) Bataller, passed away Saturday, Jan. 14, of natural causes at his residence. Born in Fairmont, W. Va., he was a son of the late John and Maria (Vilone) Bataller. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was employed for more than 35 years at Glidden Co. in Reading, working in production until his retirement. He was a graduate of Reading High School and was a life member of the Reading VFW and the Alsace Fire Company.

Survivors include his wife; daughter, Debra L. (Bataller) Busch of Alsace Twp., Susan M. (Bataller) Snyder of Exeter Twp.; sons, Dominick L. Bataller of Hartsville, Scot A. Bataller of Reading; sisters, Rosalee A. (Bataller) Huber of Tampa, Fla., Dolores G. (Bataller) Natale of Mifflinburg, Pa.; brother, Johnnie J. Bataller of West Lawn, Pa.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

RAYMOND GAINEY
SOCIETY HILL - Funeral services for Raymond Ervin Gainey Jr., 38, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Jan. 18, 2006, at Welsh Neck Baptist Church. The Revs. Mark Quigley and Tom Rutan will officiate with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Gainey died Monday, Jan. 16. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of Lois Atkinson Gainey and the late Raymond Ervin Gainey.

Surviving are his wife, Lisa Jenkins Gainey; daughters, Jessica Leigh Gainey and Kamryn Nicole Gainey; mother; sister, Lisa Gainey; brothers, Richard Gainey and Bill Gainey, all of Society Hill.

MICHAEL McLENDON
Services for Michael McLendon, 49, were held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, 2006, at Norton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles McLendon officiating. Burial followed in the Grantham cemetery.

Mr. McLendon died Friday, Jan. 13. He was born in Silver Springs, Md., a son of Carol McLendon and Mary McLendon Dority. He was retired from Wellman Inc. and was a member of the Hartsville Advent Christian Church.

Surviving are his father of Hartsville; mother of Garden City; sons, Michael McLendon, Sr. of Camden, Matthew McLendon of Hartsville; daughters, Carrie and Myranda McLendon, of Camden, Megan Atkinson of Garden City; sister, Denise Locklear of Garden City; brother, Leo McLendon of Hartsville; nine grandchildren; special friend, Cindy Shumate, of Hartsville.

WILLIE T. BRISTER
McBEE - Funeral services for Willie T. Brister, 89, were held at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, 2006, at Shady Grove Baptist Church. Burial followed in Pine Forest Memorial cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. Brister died Thursday, Jan. 12, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Thomas and Aileen Brown Brister. He received his education in the public schools in the area. He was also a U.S. Army veteran and was a member of New Hope Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Retha Mae Murphy Brister of McBee; six daughters, Melissa Rean (Dwayne) Brister, Judith Brister, Jeanette Brister, Willie Mae (David) Price and Sallie Ann (Sandy) Brister, all of McBee, and Florea Scott of Hartsville; six sons, Willie (Jo Ann) Brister Jr., James (Joann) Wesley Brister, John Wesley, Jennings (Patricia) Brister and Ronnie Lee (Tiffany) Brister, all of McBee, and Emanuel (Mary) Brister of Jefferson; 33 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and other close relatives.

ANNIE BELL ROGERS
OATES - Funeral services for Annie Bell Tedder Rogers, 76, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Mickey Lloyd officiated with burial in Elim United Methodist Church cemetery. Memorials may be made to the McLeod Hospice, 555 E. Cheves, Florence, SC 29506.

Mrs. Rogers, widow of Kenneth Rogers, died Saturday, Jan. 14. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Corbett Truett and Lillie Tedder.

Surviving are her sons and daughter-in-law, Johnny and Louise Hall of Cassatt, Alfred Rogers and Randy Rogers, both of Oates; daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Michael Best of Lydia, Vickie Mathis of Darlington, Brenda and Ricky Davis of Hartsville; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild.
