WOODROW M. HALL
Funeral services for Woodrow Marion Hall, 86, were held 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, 2006, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Peter Rivera officiating. Burial followed in Darlington Memory Gardens. Memorials may be made to the Swift Creek Baptist Church, 413 N. Center Rd., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mr. Hall died Saturday, Jan. 14. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Boyd M. and Cora Kirven Hall. Woodrow was a decorated World War II veteran who returned to his beloved Darlington County to farm and operate several businesses. He was owner and operator of Midway Tractor for 40 years. He and his partner, Harold Brasington, built and operated the Darlington International Dragway for 20 years. He was also a partner in the Hartsville-Darlington Speedway. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend to all who knew him. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Surviving are his son, Woody Hall of Hartsville; daughters and son-in-law, Sandra Kelley, Debra and David Andrews, all of Hartsville; sister, Vivian Hall Howle; grandchildren, Todd Kelley, Jenny McInville, Bridgette Hall, Trey Hall, Barry Andrews, Brad Andrews; great-grandchildren, Josh Kelley, Casey Kelley, Cody Kelley, Makayla McInville, Andrew Mattox, Chase Hall, Tanner Hall, Carson Andrews; special friend and care giver, Verma Bostic. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Ora Delle Pate Hall; brother, James P. Hall; sister, Frances Timmons.

CARROLL GRIGGS SR.
Graveside services for Carroll Lonnie Griggs Sr., 88, were held at noon Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006, in Magnolia cemetery. The Rev. Robert Morris officiated and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home was in charge.

Mr. Griggs, widower of Mildred Outlaw Griggs, died Sunday, Jan. 15. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Ham Walter and Alma Adams Griggs. He was retired as owner and operator of Carroll Griggs Plumbing & Electrical. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the DAV.

Surviving are his son, Carroll 'Bubba' Griggs of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Marlene and Wilson Bateman of Hartsville; sisters, Vista Morse of Tecumseh, Mich., Elizabeth Sauer of Monroe, Wis., Sarah 'Nellie' Braddock of Columbia; a brother, H.W. Griggs Jr.; grandchildren, Kay Moore Howle, Kathy Moore Hendrix; great-grandchildren, Christopher Ryan Stamey and Haley Kathlene Howle.

BLANCH PETERSON
LYDIA - Funeral services for Blanch Peterson, 88, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, 2006, at The Church in the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith Inc. Burial was in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Peterson died Thursday, Jan. 12, at McLeod Hospice House after an illness. She was born in Lee County, a daughter of the late Hart and Hattie McKnight. She received her education in the public schools in the area and was a member of The Church in the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith Inc.

Surviving are her husband, Blease Peterson of Lydia; two daughters, Inez (Calvin) McDowell of Lynchburg and Bertha (James) Peterson of Hartsville; a son, Isaac Peterson Sr. of Lydia; 14 grandchildren, Martha (Robert) McCall, Helen (Ronnie) Gilmore, David Mack, Richard (Tara) Mack, Diane Mack, Jimmy Peterson, Rebecca Peterson, Soloman Mack, Alice (Tracy) Rogers, Isaac (Redina) Peterson Jr., Angela Peterson, Samuel Mack, Katherine (Joe) Thomas and Harley 'Paul' (Sabrina) Peterson; 21 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives.

ROBBIE LEE ROSS
Funeral services for Robbie Lee Ross were held on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Tema Baptist Church. The burial followed in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. The Rev. Leroy Dubose, cousin of Mr. Ross, officiated the service.

Mr. Ross was born Aug. 6, 1952, in Lydia, a son of the late Alice Ross Dukes. He was educated in the public schools of Darlington County and attended Butler High School.

He was a lifelong member of Mt. Tema Baptist Church. Mr. Ross worked for more than 19 years at Sonoco Products Company as a machine operator. He later worked for Jerry Kelly Farms as a machine operator. He worked there for 10 years until his health failed.

Robbie Lee had a passion for all kinds of motorcycles and cars. He enjoyed playing pool and was an excellent player. He was a kind-hearted, fun-loving man who loved his family. His presence from among us will surely be missed by family and friends alike.

Surviving to cherish the loving memory and carry on the legacy of Robbie Lee Ross include his wife, Carolyn Ross of New Haven, Conn.; three daughters, Wanda Rivers of Charlotte, N.C., Xyna Marcella Ross of Augusta, Ga., and Agee Roshanda Ross of Hartsville; one son, Tyrone Ross of Hartsville; four sisters, Sara (Elijah) McPhail, Annette Anderson, Elouise Ross Abraham all of New York, N.Y., and Shirley Coleman of Phillipsburg, N.J.; one aunt, Ruth Austin, and one uncle, Dynishie Johnson, both of Baltimore, Md.; special cousins, Thelma Price and Sharon Price both of Hartsville; other special friends, Jimmie Addison, John Dubose and Harry Lee Colclough, all of Hartsville; seven nieces; four nephews; four stepchildren; seven grandchildren; 10 step grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and very dear friends.

JEANNE K. HAWKINS
CAMERON - Memorial Service for Jeanne Kelley Hawkins, 67, will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006, at Dukes-Harley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bart Dalton officiating.

Ms. Hawkins died Wednesday evening, Jan. 18, at The Regional Medical Center. She was born in Kelleytown, a daughter of the late Ben and Edith Johnson Kelley. She was a retired administrative specialist from S.C.S.U. Ms. Hawkins was a member of First Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Dedie Hodges of Summerville and Mrs. John L. (Aimee) Godwin of Cameron; five grandchildren, David Roberts, Tiffany Powell, Rhett Hodges, Courtney Powell and John William Godwin.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Godwin, 8207 A Old State Rd., Cameron, SC 29030.

JEFFREY K. CADDELL
Funeral services for Jeffrey Kent Caddell, 45, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006, at Chapel Hill Baptist Church. The Rev. Grover Johnson will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends Saturday, Jan. 21, from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Hartsville National League Baseball, Box 544, Hartsville, SC 29551.

Mr. Caddell died Thursday, Jan. 19. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of Willie Joe and the late Shelby Jean Starling Caddell. He served in the U. S. Air Force and was employed with Sonoco Products Co. in the paper mill. He coached the Kiwanis team in the Hartsville National League Baseball.

Surviving are his wife, Michelle Johnson Caddell of Hartsville; sons, Dillon Caddell and Caleb Caddell, both of Hartsville; father of Hartsville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lisa Caddell and Nickey Simmons of Lamar, Tabetha Caddell and Tal Windham of Lamar; numerous aunts and uncles.

MARVIN WALTERS
SOCIETY HILL - Funeral services for Marvin Thomas Walters, 77, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006, at Harris Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Milton Bradshaw and William Griggs will officiate with burial in Society Hill LDS cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends tonight, Jan. 20, at the residence, 9914 Patrick-Society Hill Hwy. Memorials may be made to the Society Hill LDS cemetery Fund, Box 497, Society Hill, SC 29593.

Mr. Walters died Thursday, Jan. 19. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Ira and Annie Polson Walters. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Surviving are his wife, Hattie Freeman Walters of Society Hill; sons and daughters-in-law, Ricky and Teresa Walters, Dean and Donna Walters, all of Byrdtown, Wayne Walters of Society Hill; daughters and sons-in-law, Marlene Walters and Randy Weatherford of Society Hill, Wanda and Frankie Freeman of Hartsville; sister, Mildred Freeman of Johnsonville; special brother-in-law, Ronnie Freeman of Society Hill; best friends, Corbett and Eleanor Gandy of Darlington; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

BARBARA BECKHAM
DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Barbara Jackson Beckham, 63, will be held 2 p.m. today, Jan. 25, 2006, at Temple Free Will Baptist Church with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Beckham died Sunday, Jan. 22, in a local hospital. She was born in Andrews, the daughter of the late Donald E. and Dorothy Bazemore Jackson. She worked with the Department of Social Services for 27 years until her retirement. Mrs. Beckham was a member of Temple Free Will Baptist Church, where she was involved in the Ladies Auxiliary and was a prayer warrior. She will be remembered as an 'encourager' to many people.

Surviving are her husband, Michael C. Beckham of Darlington; two sons, John F. (Cheryl) Wenteler, Donnie G. (Sonia) Wenteler, all of Darlington; four grandchildren, Nicole Hatfield, Jenafer Wenteler, Christina Wenteler and Emily Wenteler; a brother, Earl (Gwen) Jackson of Florence; two nephews, Frank Jackson and Richard E. Jackson; and a niece, Christie Jackson.

Mrs. Beckham was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Jackson.

WILLIAM B. STARLING
SOCIETY HILL - Funeral services for William Byerly Starling, 65, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, 2006, at Harris Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Ed Griggs will officiate with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Thursday, Jan. 26, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

Mr. Starling died Sunday, Jan. 22. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Levi and Frances O'Neil Starling Sr. He was employed with Klopman Mills in Society Hill, Cannon Mills in Kannapolis, N.C., and Superba Print Works in Mooresville until his retirement in 1997. He was a member of Jesus Life Ministries.

Surviving are his wife, Theresa Bevan Starling of Landis, N.C.; daughters, Rhonda Denise Fleming of Kannapolis, N.C., Donna Marie Helms of China Grove, N.C., Rhonda Michelle Rainey of Salisbury, N.C., Kimberly Darnell Starling of Charlotte, N.C.; sisters, Geneva Brigman of Patrick, Virginia McIntyre of China Grove, N.C., Pearlie O'Neil of Society Hill, Olliemae Weatherford of Patrick, Evelyn Williams of Chesterfield. He was preceded in death by his son, Shawn P. 'Buck' Starling.

LAURENCE HURSEY
Graveside services for Laurence Monroe Hursey, 79, were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, 2006, at Grove Hill cemetery in Darlington. The Rev. Tom Rutan officiated and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home was in charge. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 104 E. Home Ave., Hartsville SC 29550.

Mr. Hursey died Monday, Jan. 23. Born in Darlington, he was a son of the late Ben W. and Marie Jordan Hursey. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, a Sunday School teacher and BTU teacher. He was founder, owner and operator of Peoples Insurance Agency in Darlington and Hartsville for 30 years. He served in the Coast Guard, Army Transportation, and Merchant Marine and was part of the Normandy invasion. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion Post 53, Hartsville Masonic Lodge No. 173, Hartsville Jaycees, and worked with the Boy Scouts for many years.

Surviving are his wife, Lela Dixon Hursey of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Karen Hursey of Hartsville; daughter, Susan Evans of Darlington; sisters, Marion Kelley of Florence, Laura Howell of Darlington; brothers, Ben Hursey of Titusville, Fla., Ed Hursey of Darlington, Cliff Hursey of Florence; grandchildren, Alex Hursey, Christopher Parker, Haley Parker, Jennifer Parker. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Irene Moody and Elsie Grace.

KATHERINE S. TILLER
Funeral services for Katherine Sparrow Tiller, 82, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Jan. 27, 2006, at First Church of the Nazarene. The Rev. Frank Tiller will officiate with burial in New Providence Baptist cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Tiller, widow of William Lavern Tiller Sr., died Tuesday, Jan. 24. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Frank D. Sparrow Sr. and Bertha Dunn Sparrow. She was a member of First Church of the Nazarene, and was employed with Hartsville Manufacturing for 25 years.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Franklin D. and Beverly Tiller of Coon Rapids, Minn., James Ronald Tiller of Hartsville, William L. and Brenda Tiller Jr. of Hartsville; sisters, Lula Hall and Frances S. O'Neal, both of Hartsville, Elizabeth Griggs of Kannapolis, N.C.; brother, Frank D. Sparrow Jr. of Hartsville; grandchildren, Wayne Tiller, Michael Tiller, Eddie Tiller, Phillip Tiller, Joy M. Tiller, and Lori A. Woodward; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her spouse W. Tiller Sr., her father Frank Sparrow Sr., and her mother Bertha Sparrow.

CARSON LUTHER SR.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Magnolia cemetery. Dr. Jennings Ligon Duncan III, senior minister of the First Presbyterian Church of Jackson, Miss., and beloved nephew of Mr. Luther will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the Renovation Fund at First Baptist Church of Christ, 511 High Place, Macon, GA 31201.

Mr. Luther was born Sep. 2, 1905, in Moore County, N.C., to Alice Dunlap Luther and Thomas Alexander Luther. The family moved to Hartsville, where his father was in the lumber business. After graduating from school, Mr. Luther went to work for a local pharmacy. He enjoyed the challenges and responsibilities at the local pharmacy so much that he went back to school and became a registered and licensed pharmacist. Mr. Luther went to work for the Parke-Davis Company as a national retail representative in 1927 and traveled the country introducing the new miracle drugs such as penicillin and polio vaccines to the medical community. Mr. Luther married Ruby Eva Pennington of Hartsville, on Dec. 23, 1935. They moved to Atlanta, Ga., for two years and then settled in Macon, Ga., where they raised their family. Mr. Luther worked for the Parke-Davis Company for 45 years and earned his pharmacy licenses in South Carolina and Georgia. After retirement in 1970, he worked as a staff pharmacist at the Middle Georgia Hospital and assisted local pharmacies around town. He regularly attended pharmaceutical meetings and continuing education programs around the state of Georgia and maintained his license to practice pharmacy until the age of 96.

Mr. Luther was a member of the First Baptist Church of Christ in Macon, Ga., the 49th president of the Baraca Sunday School class and a past deacon of the Church. He was a member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club, the Macon Touchdown Club, the Macon Middle Georgia Pharmaceutical Association, the Grand Jury Association and did volunteer work at various charities around town. He served every year as a Salvation Army Christmas kettle bell ringer until the age of 98. The Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Ancient Free Masons of South Carolina awarded Mr. Luther the title of Sublime Degree of Master Mason for his 60 years of faithful service to Masonry. He also participated in the National Health Institute centenarian study program as a way to help and understand the needs of fellow centenarians.

Survivors include a son, William Carson Luther Jr.

and wife, Louise, of Atlanta, Ga.; daughter Penny Luther Hewett and husband, Ron, of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren, William Carson Luther III of Atlanta, Ga., Ronald Winston Hewett Jr. and wife, Kim, of Nashville, Tenn., Ashley Hewett Potter and husband Freddy and Laura Pennington Hewett, all of Charlotte, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Carson Elizabeth Hewett, Winston Hewett, Trevey Hewett, all of Nashville, Tenn., Madison Potter and Grayson Potter, both of Charlotte, N.C.; sisters, Marjorie Luther Harley of Columbia, Mary Luther Hudson of Salisbury, N.C., Lilly Mae Luther Smith of Sumter, and Kate Luther Funkhouser of Bethesda, Md. He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Ruby Pennington Luther; brothers, Walton Luther, Charles Luther, Russell Luther, all of Hartsville, and sister, Bessie Rogers of Sumter.

VADIE J. BLACKWELL
Funeral services for Vadie Johnson Blackwell, 87, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at the Clyde Church of God with the Revs. I. J. Strickland and Don Childers officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Blackwell, widow of William Denny Blackwell, died Sunday, Jan. 29. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Boyd and Essie Henderson Johnson. She was a member of the Clyde Church of God.

Surviving are her sister, Mary Lee Tidwell of Bethune; brother, the Rev. Bill Johnson of Hartsville; nephew and spouse, James 'Pee Wee' and Diane Johnson of Hartsville. She was predeceased by her sister, Ella Mae Munn; brothers, J. C. Johnson, Fred Johnson, Mortimon Johnson, Liston Johnson; and stepson, Gene Blackwell.

W.L. JORDAN
LAMAR - A memorial service for Walter Lee 'W.L.' Jordan, 72, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at Newman Swamp Southern Methodist Church, with interment following in Newman Swamp cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home, Lamar.

Mr. Jordan died Friday, Jan. 27, in a local hospital. He was born in Lamar, son of the late Marion J. and Belle Stuckey Jordan. He served his country in the United States Air Force until his retirement, and was a Vietnam veteran, also serving in Korea, Japan and Germany. Mr. Jordan was active in the DAV, VFW and the American Legion. He held an Associate's Degree from Florence-Darlington Technical College, was a member of Newman Swamp Southern Methodist Church and had recently attended Lamar Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Helen Windham Jordan, a daughter, Joann Howard, three sons, Lt. Col. Jon (Andi) Jordan of Charleston, Justin (Elizabeth) Jordan of Lawrenceville, Ga., Jeffery (Cristy) Jordan of Cumming, Ga.; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; three sisters, Louise Bradshaw, Carol Jordan, Evelyn Parnell; and a brother, Marion Lewis Jordan.

Mr. Jordan was preceded in death by a brother, Junius Jordan, and two sisters, Ellen Jordan and Judy Larrymore.

JAMES LAMBERT SR.
Services for James Edward Lambert Sr., 75, were held 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006, from the First Free Will Baptist Church. Burial was in the Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mr. Lambert, who died Jan. 27, was born in Darlington, a son of the late Rev. Clarence E. Lambert and Mildred Graham Lambert. He was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church and was a veteran of the Korean War.

Surviving are his wife, Verlee Odom Lambert of Hartsville; son, James Edward Lambert Jr. of West Columbia; daughter, Sheree Joyce Giffin of Knoxville, Tenn.; sister, Marion Barrett of Disputanta, Va.; step-daughter, Janet Fish of Moncure, N.C.; step-son, Mike King of Hartsville; step-daughter-in-law, Cynde King, Hartsville; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a step-son, David King.
