Lilyan Jones
November 19, 2008

Lilyan Jones of Newberry died Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Newberry, the daughter of the late G. J. and Annie J. Jones and was a graduate of the S. C. Baptist Hospital and College for Nurses. She was a retired registered nurse and a member of the First Baptist Church.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews and was predeceased by her sister, Sadye J. Schumpert.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, at the Whitaker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Harmon. Interment was in Rosemont Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:30 to 2:00 PM prior to the service.
Active pallbearers were Dr. E. G. Long, Dr. E. E. Epting, Gary Pope, W.E. Dehihns, and Sam Jefcoat.

Larry D. Kelly
November 9, 2008

Larry D. Kelly, age 65 of 1470 Peach Orchard Rd., Union, SC died Sunday, November 9, 2008 at his home.
Mr. Kelly was born in Newberry County, SC July 15, 1943, a son of the late Rutledge Kelly and Earleen Wicker Kelly. He was a graduate of Whitmre High School and a former courier for a law firm. Mr. Kelly was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church.
Surviving are a brother, Kenneth Kelly of Florida; a special niece and caregiver, Rosanna Siebert of the home and another niece; two nephews; two great-nieces; two great-nephews; three great-great nieces; special friends: Bernard Woods, Christopher and Shea Lavender, Thomas Davis, Brenda Webb and Wayne Martin and a special pet, Mica Kelly Woods.
Graveside services were held 3:00 PM Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery in Pomaria, SC conducted by Rev. Scott Cobb.
Active pallbearers were Shawn Siebert, Thomas O’Shields, Wayne Martin, Shane Lawson, Christopher Lavender and Thomas Davis.
Visitation was held at the cemetery immediately following the service.
The family is at the home, 1470 Peach Orchard Rd., Union.

J. Roland Dickert
November 8, 2008

J. Roland Dickert, 85, of Newberry, died Saturday, November 8, 2008 in Hendersonville, NC.
He was born on August 22, 1923 in Newberry, a son of the late Yancy T. and Annie Sligh Dickert. He was an Army veteran of WW II and was a member of Lewis United Methodist Church.
He is survived by 2 sisters, Harriett Smith of Winston-Salem, NC and Mary Louise Smith of Freehold, NJ; two sisters-in-law, Ellen Dickert and Lera Dickert both of Newberry; and a number of nieces and nephews including his caregiver, Ronnie Dickert, Sr. He was predeceased by sisters, Roberta D. West and Nellie Blanche Dickert; brothers, Yancy J. “Jack” Dickert, William G. “Bill” Dickert, and Daniel C. “Dan” Dickert; and his step-mother, Elise Nash Dickert.
Funeral services were conducted at 5:00 P.M., Monday, in the Whitaker Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Caldwell Day.
Visitation was from 3:30 to 4:30 P.M. prior to the service.
Memorials may be made to White Oak Manor, 2555 Kinard Street, Newberry, SC 29108 or Lewis Memorial United Methodist Church, 1105 First Street, Newberry, SC 29108.

Vivian Lee Shealy
November 7, 2008

Vivian L. Shealy, 63, of 1834 Brookside Manor, Newberry, died Friday, November 7, 2008 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Ms. Shealy was born in Newberry a daughter of the late E.L. Shealy, Jr. and Dorothy Reaves Shealy. She was a former manager of I-26 Shell Station and was a member of West End Baptist Church.
She is survived by her sisters, Jackie Bowers and her husband Tommy of Newberry and Pat Shealy and her husband Don of Prosperity; nieces, Pam Bowers and Bridget Shealy; nephews, Craig Bedenbaugh, Brian Shealy and Michael Shealy and a number of great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 P.M. Monday at West End Baptist Church by the Rev. Kevin Carter. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation was from 5:00 to 6:00 P.M. Sunday at Whitaker Funeral Home.
The family suggests memorials be made to Vivian’s chosen charities: West End Baptist Church, 620 Main St.,Newberry, SC 29108; St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place Memphis, TN 38105 ; or the Newberry County Animal Care and Control, 11494 S.C. Highway 34, Newberry, SC 29108.
Active pallbearers were Russell Shealy, Ronnie Shealy, Brian Shealy, Michael Shealy, Craig Bedenbaugh, Barry Mims, Larry Mims, Luther Shealy and Stanley Lindler.
Honorary pallbearers were Faye Heath, Casper and Frances Berry, Marie Nobles, Lee Foster, Dr. Corey Hunt, Doris Coats, Darlene Mutz, Pansy Perkins and Corrie Brown.

Rebecca Shealy Lybrand
November 6, 2008

Rebecca Shealy Lybrand, 77, widow of W. Teechie Lybrand died Thursday, November 6, 2008.
Mrs. Lybrand was born in Prosperity a daughter of the late Wyman and Daisy Amick Shealy. She was retired from General Electric after 33 years and was a member of the Church of God and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.
She is survived by her daughter, Stephanie Rowe of Saluda; her son, Tony Lybrand and his wife Linda of Newberry; a sister Genell S. Oxner and her husband Harvey of Newberry; a brother, Everett W. Shealy and his wife Sheila of Prosperity; three grandchildren, Erika Roberts, Randy Beach and Casey Lybrand; and five great grandsons, Cameron Lybrand, Chase Lybrand, Nicholas Beach, Jonathan Beach and Alex Beach. She was predeceased by a brother, James Cornell Shealy.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday at Whitaker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Waco Cotney. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was from 5:30 to 7:00 P.M. Saturday at Whitaker Funeral Home.
The family suggests memorials be made to Lewis United Methodist Church, 1105 First St., Newberry, SC 29108.
Pallbearers were Dean Dickert, Toby Shealy, Steve, Shealy, Craig Shealy, William Shealy, and Brandon Kent.

Tommy Cromer
November 6, 2008

Tommy Cromer, 67, of 4651 Clara Brown Road, Newberry, died Thursday, November 6, 2008 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
He was born on February 19, 1941 in Newberry County a son of the late Horace R. and Alice Summer Cromer. He was a retired employee of CSX Railroad and a former member of the S.C. National Guard and a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Mr. Cromer was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather and was loved by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Terri McCarty Cromer of Newberry; a daughter, Tina Cromer Staub and husband Kevin of Irmo; a son, Jim Cromer and wife Paige of Newberry; grandchildren, Ryan, Evan, and Braden Staub all of Irmo, and Alexandrea and Bethany Cromer both of Newberry; a sister, Jean Nichols and husband Bobby of Newberry; and sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Dale M. Brigman, Dixie M. and Shealy Counts, and Brenda Cromer all of Newberry. Mr. Cromer was predeceased by a brother, Lewis “Doc” Cromer and a granddaughter, Sterling Blythe Staub.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 P.M. Saturday at Ebenezer United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dr. Steven Todd and the Rev. Bruce Palmer. Burial were in the Church Cemetery.
Visitation was from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. Friday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Cemetery Fund, c/o Woodrow Lathrop 7988 S.C. Highway 395, Newberry, SC, 29108.

Gordon John Houghton
November 4, 2008

G. John Houghton, 76, of Woodstock, Ontario died Tuesday, November 4, 2008 in Newberry, South Carolina.
Mr. Houghton was born January 26, 1932 in Solihull, Great Britain son of the late William Percival Houghton and Doris Irene (nee) Watson Houghton.
Mr. Houghton was a Royal Air Force veteran and was an avid RVer and a member of the Good Sam Club.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Houghton of Ohio; daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and Bryan Preece of Canada and Janet and Dave Evenview of England; a step-daughter, Patricia Czmil of Ohio; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 6:00 P.M. Friday at Whitaker Funeral Home Chapel by Rabbi Dani’el Rendelman. The family did receive friends prior to the service.

Eugene H. Tuggle
November 3, 2008

Eugene H. Tuggle, 74, of Newberry died November 3, 2008. Mr. Tuggle was born December 24, 1933 in Carroll County, Georgia, son of the late Hampton Larry and Velma Hendrix Tuggle.
Mr. Tuggle was an Army veteran of the Korean War and was the former owner of Tuggle Chevrolet in Newberry. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church, the Chesley Cannon Sunday school class and the Newberry Lions Club. He delivered Meals on Wheels for 15 years.
He is survived by his daughter, Kenna Santos and her husband Alex of Gainesville, Florida; his son, Eric Tuggle and his wife Jennifer of High Springs, Florida; his sister, Berlie Matthews of Georgia; and three grandchildren, Chris Kulpa, Trey Howton and Tristan Santos. He was predeceased by a son, Alan H. Tuggle.
Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 A.M. Saturday at Central United Methodist Church in Newberry by the Rev. Karen Radcliffe. Interment was in Rosemont Cemetery.
Visitation was from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. Friday at Whitaker Funeral Home.
The family suggests memorials be made to Central United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 67, Newberry, SC 29108.
Active pallbearers were members of the Lions Club.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the Chesley Cannon Sunday School Class.
