Memorial services for Avice Lyles Truett, 48, were held Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 2 p.m. at the residence of Mary Lyles, 1233 N. Fifth St. Avice, who died Tuesday, Jan. 24, was born in Hartsville, a daughter of Mary Petty Lyles and the late Sammy Lyles.
Surviving are her husband, Randy Truett of Hartsville; her mother of Hartsville; two daughters, Amy Truett of Florence and Charlotte Adams of Hartsville; sisters, Eva Lyles of Myrtle Beach, Georgia Purviance and Lisa Matthews, both of Omaha, Neb., and Samatha Lyles of Darlington; brother, George Lyles of Hartsville and two grandchildren.

BEECH ISLAND - Funeral services for Robert Carroll Newsome, 86, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The family will deliver a eulogy, with burial in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends tonight, Feb. 1, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Newsome died Sunday, Jan. 29. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Dutt and Penny Kervin Newsome. He was a member of Heights Baptist Church, Beech Island. He was a Veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy. He was a member of the VFW, the American Legion, and was retired from DuPont.
Surviving are his wife, Marie Moody Newsome of Beech Island; son and daughter-in-law, Richard Leon and Katherine Newsome of Jackson; sister, Hattie Newsome Stewart of Beech Island; brother and sister-in-law, Hugh and Margaret Newsome of Hartsville; grandchildren, Steven Newsome, Kimberly Mace, Kelly Dobson; eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Rex Newsome, Leslie Newsome, Don Newsome; sister, Penny Newsome Flemming.
CYNTHIA G. BASTON
SOCIETY HILL - Funeral services for Cynthia Green Baston will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, at Bethesda Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mrs. Baston died Saturday, Jan. 28, at her residence. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Clarence and Susanna Fountain Green Sr. She received her education at Rosenwald High School and was a graduate of Butler High School. She attended Hunter College in New York and was a college graduate of Coulter Junior College.
Mrs. Baston was a retired human resources supervisor from the state of New York. She was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church and Order of Eastern Star Triumph Chapter No. 128.
Surviving are one daughter, Susan Laeda of Raleigh, N.C.; one son, Ronald Baston of Charleston; two grandchildren, Kwabyna Baston of Raleigh, N.C., and Harmony Baston of Charleston; one great-grandchild, Bobby Jabari Shields of Raleigh, N.C.; two sisters, Carrie Greene McQueen of Society Hill and Josephine Winborne of Sullolk, Va.; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Baston of Jamaica, N.Y., Mary Greene of Bronx, N.Y., and Virginia Mae Greene of Brooklyn, N.Y.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gonzie Lee Baston; one sister, Virginia Green Brennan and one brother, Clarence Greene Jr. A wake service will be at Bethesda Baptist Church, today, Feb. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m.
LOTTIE M. McPHAIL
SOCIETY HILL - Funeral services for Lottie Mae McPhail, 89, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, at New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home in Hartsville.
Mrs. McPhail died Tuesday, Jan. 31, at her residence. Mrs. McPhail was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late James and Beersheba Joyner London. She received her education in the Darlington County public school systems and was a retired employee of the Darlington County Public School District. She was a member of New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church, Senior Choir, Missionary Society and Homebound Ministry.
Surviving are five daughters, Bernice Robinson, Margaret (Joseph) Faure, Mary (George) Clark and Linda McPhail, all of Staten Island, N.Y., and Gail McPhail of Society Hill; five sons, Andrew (Linda) McPhail of Staten Island, N.Y., the Rev. Booker T. (Laura) McPhail Jr. of Society Hill, Dan McPhail of Charleston, David McPhail of Atlanta, Ga., and James (Connie) Mumford of Hampton, Va.; three sisters, Beersheba Rhodes, Delia McPhail and Georgianna London, all of Ansonia, Conn.; 35 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and a host of other close relatives and friends.

JaVon Coleman, 21, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at Joseph Still Burn Center in Augusta, Ga. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

WILLIE MAE STOKES
DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Willie Mae Gainey Stokes, 83, were held 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006, in Black Creek Baptist Church with interment following in the church cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Randy Woods and directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Stokes was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late Angus and Annie Bell Cassidy Gainey. She was a store manager of Larry's Department Store for many years. Mrs. Stokes was a member of Black Creek Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher for more than 50 years. She was also involved in the Women's Federation and the Darlington County Home Demonstration.
Surviving are her husband, Loy Stokes of Darlington; two sons, James B. (Celia) Griggs of Murray, Ky., and Raleigh P. (Beverly) Griggs of Myrtle Beach; two daughters, Norma Jean 'Jeanie' (Hugh) Wilson of Beaufort, Etta (Marty) Milhoan of Lelia Lakes, Texas, 22 grandchildren, and a number of great- and great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Stokes was preceded in death by two daughters, Margaret Griggs and Frances Floyd; two brothers, Thomas A. Gainey and G.C. Gainey, and a sister, Margaret Osbourne.

CHRISTOPHER HOFFMAN
PATRICK - Funeral services Christopher Allen Hoffman, 23, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006, The service was held at Praise The Lord Ministries and Officiated by Rev. Randy Jackson and Rev. Burke Hoffman.
A lovely arrangement of music gave this loving young man his closing here on earth a tribute of honor. His cousin, Crystal Ann Winburn, played for the opening of service and until the family was seated. She then sang 'Wish You Were Here.' Her beautiful voice opened this service to be followed by a song by his friend, Quinn Cable, his cousin, Keith Kirby, and closing the singing service was Doug McCormick from Patrick and Clemson. All of the beautiful music gave the family a peace of mind knowing Christopher was so loved.
At the service the two pastor's gave special Bible verses that were of special words and meanings to God's loving arms bringing this young man into Heaven.
The 'eulogy' was written and read by his aunt, Celeste M. Crowley.
The service and burial were directed and conducted by the wonderful Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. As only Brown-Pennington-Atkins years of loving, caring going the extra mile to give each and every member of a family the sympathy they need to get them through the grieving process. There are not enough wonderful words that can thank this loyal company in doing such a task of the ultimate job of the last thing you do for your love ones on this earth. Kim Cranford, Walter Brown, and the others of course our love and thanks from the moment we called you until burial at Magnolia cemetery and our final return to our home without Christopher. Our trust in you all was answered with the sincere ability of God being in each and every one of your hearts.
Born on April, 20, 1982, Christopher was the son Benny and Merna (Dink) Hoffman, and Alicia Tiller Gregory and Wayne Gregory. Brothers, Artie Capell and Benny (Bengie) Hoffman Jr. Sister Ashley Gregory and niece, Kaylee Gregory. Grandparents, Buddy and Marlene Crowley of Hartsville.
Christopher was so full of life and such a loving young man the family wanted the names of his uncles and aunts mentioned also a few special friends. You see when one so young has been taken away so fast with no time to say 'good-byes' and 'I love you' it means a lot to the parents that their names be mentioned.

Christopher's very close friends were such a special group of young men and women it gives the world hope and honor to know these young people stood up to every thing that was asked of them, and many that they did on their on out of love for their special friend Christopher (Horse) Hoffman.
Seeing their tears, the way they helped the Hoffman family get through this was amazing and such a beautiful tribute of love. Duties they performed around the home to some carrying their best friend to his final resting place on earth.
This special brother-hood and friends include Will O'Bannon, Jonathan and Libby Byrd, Eugene Hall, Josh Palacies, Jason and Tracy Watkins, Spencer Campbell, Preston and Nicky Dority. Also, Michael and Vanessa Bernhart, who did many things to get the family through this tragedy, came in from Ocala, Fla. Rocky and Phillip Perdue from Ocala, Fla. Also cousins along with Doug Hoffman from Hartsville, a very close cousin and friend.
A special person from Christopher's life to be mentioned and remembered is Jennifer Bryant.
Christopher was preceded in death by his loving grandparents, Mrs. Edith Hoffman, Ray and Mae Tiller; great-grandmother, Inez Dixon, and his aunt, Donna Kay Perdue.

WILLIAM M. KELLEY
CAMDEN - Memorial services for William Mitchell Kelley, 82, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Feb. 8, 2006, at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel, with interment following in Quaker cemetery. The Rev. Bruce Hancock, Dr. Mark Bredholdt and Dr. Booker Bagby will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home beginning at 3 p.m.

Mr. Kelley died Sunday, Feb. 5. Born in Florence, he was the son of the late John Oren and Georgia Ann Kelley. He retired from the DuPont Company and was a former manger of the May Plant Maintenance Maulers softball team. He was a member of the Founding Committee and original Board of Directors of the May Plant Credit Union. He was a U.S. Navy veteran having served during World War II in the Pacific Theatre aboard the U.S.S. Wasp and U.S.S. Ranger. He was also an enlisted member of the U.S. Naval Reserves. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Camden.
Surviving are his loving wife of more than 60 years, Kate Sullivan Kelley; daughters, Pam Kelley Parker and husband, Bob, of Anderson, L. Jo Kelley and husband, Drew Shane, of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Kim E. Kelley of Washington, D.C., and Jill Kelley Morris of Camden; grandchildren, Katie P. Lewis, Timothy K. Parker, Fran P. Young, Bill Parker, Beth P. Blansett, Ben Parker, Kelley E. Morris, Mamie C. Morris, William Rush Morris, Elizabeth Yi Mei Shane; 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Mary K. Tolson of Florence; a number of nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant son; a brother, Mendol J. Kelly; sisters, Sarah Lou K. Raines and Joyce S. Storar.
JaVON COLEMAN
Funeral services for JaVon Coleman, 21, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, 2006, at Centenary United Methodist Church with services conducted by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Coleman died Tuesday, Jan. 31, at John Still Burn Center in Augusta, Ga. He was born in Washington, D.C., a son of Justine Campbell Coleman and the late William Coleman Sr. He received his education in the Darlington County public school system and was a graduate of Hartsville High School. He was a current employee with the Governor's School in Hartsville.
Surviving are his mother, Justine Coleman; one brother, William Coleman Jr., both of Hartsville; four aunts, Christine Fisher, Marie Washington, Jacqueline Coleman Miles and Mary Turner, all of Virginia; one uncle, Cornwell Campbell of Hartsville; one niece, Nya Smith of Marion; a special friend, Brittany Cotton of Columbia; and a host of other close relatives and friends.
HATTIE MYERS
Funeral services for Hattie Myers were held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with a visitation following the service. The Rev. Tony Medlin officiated.
Ms. Myers, a former resident of Sligo and Clarion, Pa., and wife of the late Vernon Myers, died Sunday, Feb. 5. She was born in Sandy Hollow, Pa., on June 10, 1917, a daughter of the late Chester Guy and Cecil Reddick Best. Hattie had moved to an assisted living facility in Hartsville five years ago to live close to her son and daughter-in-law, Vern and Nancy. Prior to moving to South Carolina, Mrs. Myers was a member of the Monroe Chapel United Methodist Church, Sligo, Pa., and was an active member of the United Methodist Women. She worked for several years as a shoe sales associate at local retail stores. Her most notable qualities were her fierce loyalty to all of her family and friends. 'Mother' was a job she took seriously. Even until the final days, Mom had concerns that no one missed a meal or did not get a good night's sleep. But her real joy later in life as evident by the beaming smiles, was her great-grand kids. Friends and family will remember her as an energetic, and sometimes, feisty person that had a clean house - always. Neighbors and family reaped the benefits of her garden preservation efforts - a task she performed faithfully with her sisters and brothers.
Hattie was the mother of Vern (Nancy) Myers of Hartsville, Janet (Robert) Nadaskay of Blue Point, N.Y; grandmother of, Christopher (Stacy) Myers of River Falls, Wis., Elizabeth (Stacy) Myers of Tulsa, Okla., Jason Nadaskay of New Paltz, N.Y., Amy Nadaskay of New York and Australia, Michelle Wrona of Hartsville, Angie (Derek) Strickler of Manitou Springs, Colo.; great-grandma Hattie of Andy, Matt, Katy, Jake, Dylan, Connor, Molly, Emma; sister of Chester Guy Best Jr., Kathryn (Best) Shook, Valjean (Best) Shook, Eugene Best.

JAMES A. SOWELL JR.
ST. MATTHEWS - Funeral services for James Allen Sowell Jr., 63, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006, at Providence Methodist Church in McBee, with the Rev. Paul Sowell officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Thompson Funeral Home Inc. of Orangeburg.
Mr. Sowell died Thursday, Feb. 2. He was born Aug. 13, 1942, in Charleston, a son of Eleanor Chinnis McGalliand and the late James Allen Sowell Sr. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force and was an employee of the town of St. Matthews.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Betty Driggers Sowell of the home; three sons, James A. Sowell III of Tennessee, Richard Sowell and Jeffrey Sowell, both of the home; four grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Jerry (Mary Lou) George of Charleston; his step-father, Joe McGalliand of Charleston and a number of nieces and nephews.

DANA H. DIXON
Funeral services for Dana Harris Dixon, 67, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 10, 2006, at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. Fr. Michael Ridgill will officiate, and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge.
Mr. Dixon died Sunday, Feb. 5. Born in Durham, N.C., he was a son of the late Henry B. and Evelyn Tyson Dixon. His education included a Bachelor of Arts (music) from UNC Chapel Hill, 1960; Master of Science from Juilliard School of Music, 1963; Fulbright Scholar, 1963-1965, Paris Conservatory, studying piano with Yvonne Lefebure. He was an associate professor of music at Limestone College from 1966-1977 and a professor of music at Coker College from 1977-1987. He was on the Florence Symphony Board of Directors for a number of years and gave many piano recitals in area colleges and universities, as well as in the San Francisco area.
Surviving is his brother, Dr. Henry B. Dixon II of Franktown, Va.

LEOLA THOMPSON LEE
Services and burial for Leola Thompson Lee, 76, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006, at Tabernacle United Methodist Church. The Revs. Scott Petry and Billy Campbell will officiate. Visitation will be tonight, Feb. 8, from 6 to 8 at Norton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Lee, who died Feb. 6, was born in Hartsville, a daughter of the late Martin Thompson and Lillian Caddell Matthews. She was a member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church and was retired from Morrell Memorial Convalescent Center.
Surviving are daughter and husband, Lynne and Russell Luther Jr., of Hartsville; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Lloyd Martin Lee.

GLADYS CHAPMAN
Graveside services for Gladys Christine Chapman, 55, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006, at Magnolia cemetery. The Rev. Rick Schubert officiated, and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home was in charge.
Mrs. Chapman died Thursday, Feb. 2. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late William Harper Cross and Vassar Cross Green. She was a loving and giving wife and mother. She was active in her church and was a compassionate and giving nurse.
Surviving are her sons, William Scott Chapman and Michael Todd Chapman, both of Hartsville; sister, Gloria Davis of Hartsville; brothers, William 'Bill' Cross and Charles Dal Cross; granddaughter, Eryn Marie Chapman, all of Hartsville.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Penny Leigh Chapman.
