DARLINGTON - Mrs. Hazel Mae Doughty Streett, 89, died Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2006, in a Florence hospital. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 this evening, Feb. 10, 2006. Services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006, at Cain Funeral Home Chapel. Cain Funeral Home of Florence is assisting the family.

LELA D. HURSEY
Funeral services for Lela Dixon Hursey, 76, will be held Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Hartsville. The Rev. Tom Rutan will officiate with private burial in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. Saturday prior to the service at the church.

Mrs. Hursey, widow of Laurence Monroe Hursey, died Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2006. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Tilman and Ethel Mae Kelley Dixon. She was a member of First Baptist Church and treasurer of her Sunday school class. She worked at the food pantry and was Volunteer of the Year at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center as a pink lady. She retired from Belk department store with more than 30 years of service.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Karen Hursey of Hartsville; daughter, Susan Evans of Darlington; brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Miriam Dixon of Darlington; grandchildren, Alex Hursey, Haley Parker, Christopher Parker, Jennifer Parker.

JOHN MIXON JR.
Mass of Christian burial for John Burl Mixon Jr., 82, will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Feb. 10, 2006, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Father Karl Roesch, Celebrant. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. Memorials may be made to the local DAV chapter.

Mr. Mixon, widower of Geraldine Burk Mixon and Lunez Thornley Rowe Mixon, died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of the late John Burl and Sarah Woodham Mixon. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Marines at the battle of Iwo Jima. He was owner and operator of Mixon Landscaping for 40 years.

Surviving are his sons and daughter-in-law, Andy and Pat Mixon of Akron, Ohio, Mike Mixon of Hartsville; sister, Peggy Joyce White of Florence; grandchildren, Chad Mixon, Lee Mixon; great-grandchildren, Tiffany Gregory, Brooke Mixon, Tori Mixon, Dale Mixon, Mike Mixon; special friend, Patti Davis. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jack Mixon, and his sister, Sarah Francis 'Sissy' Mixon.

BENNIE MAE WATSON
Mrs Bennie Mae Watson died on Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2006, at the residence after an illness. She was the mother of Mr. Lance (Dr. Kandra) Watson. Hines Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Graveside services for Katie Peele Sowell, 91, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Feb. 10, 2006, at Magnolia cemetery. The Rev. Tony Medlin will officiate, and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. Memorials may be made to St. Luke United Methodist Church, 302 Dunlap Drive, Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Sowell, widow of Raymond C. Sowell Sr., died Wednesday, Feb. 8. Born in Laurinburg, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Rufus W. and Bessie Quick Peele. She was a charter member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and former treasurer, a member of the Dannie Newsome Circle, member and past worthy matron of Hartsville Chapter No. 91 OES. She retired from Wachovia Bank after 40 years of service.

Surviving are her son, Dr. Raymond C. Sowell Jr. of Garden City Beach; half-brother, Jim Luke; half-sister, Bessie Wilbanks of Hamlet, N.C.

REV. DANIEL MORRISON JR.
SPARTANBURG - Funeral services for the Rev. Daniel Angus Morrison Jr., 73, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, 2006, at the Parlor of Bethel United Methodist Church conducted by the Revs. Lawrence F. Hays Jr., David B. Smith and David F. Ervin. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, directed by J. F. Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel of Spartanburg.

The Rev. Morrison died Saturday, Feb. 11, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. He was born June 9, 1932, in Chesterfield County and was the son of the late Daniel A. Morrison Sr. and Marie Stokes Morrison. He served 39 years as a United Methodist Minister of the S.C. United Methodist Conference, serving in 19 churches, and was pastor emeritus of Bethel United Methodist Church in Spartanburg. The Rev. Morrison graduated from McBee High School, attended the University of South Carolina and Duke Divinity School. He enjoyed gardening and volunteered with Spartanburg County Helping Hands Ministry.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Jeanette Pierce Morrison of the home; two sons, Daniel Richard (Carolyn) Morrison of Piedmont and Martin Dale (Beverly) Morrison of Liberty; two daughters, Cindy Marie (Steve) Johnson of Inman and Dana Catherine Morrison and friend, Darlene Myles of Spartanburg; two sisters, Frances Morrison and Elizabeth Frostick, both of McBee; three brothers, Mendel and Olin Morrison of McBee and Frank Morrison of Hartsville; five grandchildren, Christy (George) Rabon, Chase (Morgan) Morrison, Heather Morrison, Richard Morrison and Caitlyn Johnson; and two great-grandchildren, Brooke and Dustin Rabon.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Honorary escorts were United Methodist Ministers and their wives.

DORIS KELLEY
LAMAR - Funeral services for Doris Galloway Kelley, 85, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, 2006, at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. The Rev. Richard Hopper will officiate with burial in Wesley Chapel UMC cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends today, Feb. 15, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Kelley died Monday, Feb. 13. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Lee and Esther Best Galloway. She was a faithful longtime member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church and a dedicated loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was previously employed with Clemson University Extension Service and was also a nurse for the Darlington County DHEC.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Thomas L. and Sterling Kelley of Savannah, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law, Judy Kelley and Cecil Oates of Oates; sister and brother-in-law, Camilla Galloway and John Townsend of Myrtle Beach; grandchildren, Tommy (Waynette) Oates of Oates, Robert (Beth) Oates of Blythewood, Tricia (Bart) Learman of Savannah, Ga., Tonya Kelley of Savannah, Ga.; four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Galloway, her mother, Esther Galloway, and her spouse, Thomas Kelley.

BONNIE WOODS
Bonnie Easterling Woods, 56, died Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2006. Funeral plans will be announced later by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends tonight, Wednesday, from 5 to 7 at the funeral home.

RONALD JEFFERSON SR.
LAMAR - Ronald James Jefferson Sr., 76, died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2006, in a local hospital. A private family service will be held at a later date.

Mr. Jefferson was born in Rock Hill, son of the late Davis and Macy Windham Jefferson. He had retired as a police officer in Washington, D.C., and also served as and inspector for the ABC Board in Washington. Mr. Jefferson enjoyed fishing, playing golf and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of Lamar United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Myrtle Knotts Kennedy Jefferson of Lamar; a daughter, Cheryl Ann Jefferson Jones of Fort Mill; two sons, Ronald James Jefferson Jr. of Norwood, N.C., Chris (Brenda) Jefferson of Lamar; three grandchildren, Kaylea Jones, Katie Jefferson, Matthew Jefferson; two great-grandchildren; three step-sons, LeGrand Kennedy of Timmonsville, John C. Kennedy of Charlotte, Kristopher Wade (Ginger) Kennedy of Florence; a step-daughter, Tammie (Donnie) Weatherford of Hartsville; step-grandchildren, Aaron, Kristen, and KC Weatherford, Krista and David Kennedy and Chance Forkasdi.

Mr. Jefferson was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois Muriel Jefferson; two brothers, Harris and Gary Jefferson; and a sister, Irene Jefferson.

MELVIN PADGETT
DARLINGTON - The Rev. Johnnie Melvin Padgett, 75, died Monday, Feb. 13, 2006, in a local hospital. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home, with interment at 4 p.m. in Bamberg Memorial Gardens, Bamberg.

The Rev. Padgett was born in Valley, Ala., son of the late Johnnie M. and Pearl Carter Padgett. He served in the National Guard and then went on to preach at many churches, including Freewill Baptist in Orangeburg, Calvary Baptist in Marion in which he organized, Gantt Street Baptist in Cayce, County Line Baptist in Rayle, Ga., Beulah Baptist in Branchville, and Faith Baptist in Darlington. He was a member of Freedom Baptist Church.

Surviving are five sons, Robert M. Padgett of Warsaw, N.C., Johnny R. Padgett of Mullins, Ronald Padgett of Lexington, Curtis D. Padgett of Darlington, Kaleb Padgett of Florence; six daughters, Nancy Padgett of Thompson, Ga., Inez Stroud of Mullins, Tommie E. Haselden of Dillon, Melody Elders of Orangeburg, Julie 'Sunshine' Black of Florence, Mandy Sue Padgett of Darlington; 21 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; a brother, William F. Padgett of Dearing, Ga.

The Rev. Padgett was preceded in death by his first wife, Nellie Hughes Padgett; his second wife, Sue Watts Padgett; a son, Oral M. 'Pee-Wee' Padgett; two brothers, Glen M. and Bobby C. Padgett; and three sisters, Erma McAlhaney, Edna Carter and Eva Griffin. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, Feb. 15, at Belk Funeral Home.

TOM L. YARBOROUGH
LAMAR - Funeral services for Thomas 'Tom' L. Yarborough, 40, were held 3 p.m. Monday, Feb.13, 2006, at Lamar First Baptist Church with interment following in Newman Swamp cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Yarborough passed away Saturday, Feb. 11, with his family by his side, after a courageous fight with cancer. He was born in Lamar, son of Tommy and Jeanette White Yarborough. He was a machinist and a poultry farmer. Mr. Yarborough attended Lamar First Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Stacia Hudson Yarborough of Timmonsville; a son, Luke Yarborough; a daughter, Abby Yarborough, both of the home; three sisters, Dawn (Rick) Smith of Terrell, N.C., Jan Yarborough of Lamar, Angie (Chuck) Weaver of Florence; maternal grandfather, Robert White, and several nieces and nephews.

MILDRED H. HANCOCK
CHERAW - Funeral services for Mildred Hoffman Hancock, 88, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 13, 2006, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Hancock died Friday, Feb. 10. She was born in the Middendorf Community, a daughter of the late Henry McIver and Nettie Hodges Hoffman. She was married to the late John Ross Hancock. Mrs. Hancock was a graduate of Chicago School of Nursing and was a nurse for 35 years. She began her nursing career at Powe Hospital in Hartsville on Jan. 25, 1942, and worked there until the hospital closed. For 12 years she was employed by Byerly Hospital in Hartsville as a nurse and physical therapist. On Sept. 1, 1964, Mrs. Hancock joined the staff of the Perry Clinic in Chesterfield and worked there until her retirement on Nov. 15, 1977. She was founder of the South Carolina Association of LPN's and the South Carolina State Licensed Practical Nurses Board of Directors. She was a former chairman of the LPN South Carolina State Association, serving on all committees, and held other officer positions in the association. She was the first nurse in Darlington County, and the eighth nurse in the state of South Carolina to receive her license as a LPN. Mrs. Hancock was a member of the Woodmen of the World and held many officer positions in the organization. Mrs. Hancock lived in Cheraw before moving June 16, 1988, to Dunwoody Ga., to live with her daughter. While in Georgia, she participated in the Atlanta Medical Research Program for Alzheimer's Disease from July 3, 1991, to April 5, 1993. She lived with her daughter until it became necessary to enter a nursing facility on July 15, 1993. Mrs. Hancock was a member of Dunwoody Baptist Church, Dunwoody, Ga.

Surviving are a daughter, Marylie Dority Schmidt and husband Lynn of Dacula, Ga.; granddaughter, Susan Woodworth Caldwell of Athens, Ga.; great-grandchildren, Caroline and Andrew Caldwell of Athens, Ga.; a sister, Rosalie Hoffman Sexton of Clio; niece, JoAnn Sexton Hickman of Richmond, Va.; and great-niece and nephew JoAnna and Robert Hickman of Richmond, Va.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Emory Alzheimer's Disease Center, 1841 Clifton Rd., Atlanta, GA. 30329.

Richard N. Jones, 88, died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006, in Regency Hospital after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Ben McFarland, 62, died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2006, at McLeod Hospice Center after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 352 Commanchee St., Hartsville.

BONNIE E. WOODS
Funeral services for Bonnie Easterling Woods, 56, were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, 2006, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Spring Branch Baptist Church cemetery. The Rev. Becky Boykin and Tom Gainey officiated. Mrs. Woods died Tuesday, Feb. 14. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Leland Richard and Louise Mottershead Easterling. She was a member of Spring Branch Baptist Church and was the owner/operator of Woods Tire & Brakes. Surviving are her husband, James R. Woods; daughter, Jeannie Woods Porter, both of Hartsville; sister, Cathy Easterling Griggs of Hartsville; brothers, Tommy Easterling, Rich Easterling, Mark Easterling, all of Hartsville; grandsons, Darian Lance Porter, Cody Chad Porter, Michael James Kelly, all of Hartsville; granddaughters, Cricket Dianna Porter and Ashly Nicole Kelly, both of Hartsville. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Cricket Woods Kelly.

Memorial services for Clarence Edward Tiller Jr., 62, will be held at 6 p.m. today, Feb. 17, 2006, at Norton Funeral Home Chapel. Mr. Tiller died Saturday, Feb. 11. He was born in Hartsville, a son of the late Clarence Edward Tiller Sr. and Luerena Jernigan Tiller. He was a retired cab driver. Surviving are his wife, Ernestine Commander Tiller of Columbia; sons, Clarence E. Tiller III of Patrick, John Edward Tiller of of Columbia; daughters, Jennifer Louise Tiller of Columbia, Jessica Tiller of Columbia; sister, Maybelle Howle of Hartsville; brothers, Monroe Tiller of Rock Hill, and Ray Tiller of Symrna, Tenn.

Funeral services for Richard Jones, 88, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006, at Nazareth New Apostolic Church. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, at Florence National cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home. Mr. Jones died Saturday, Feb. 11, in Regency Hospital in Florence after an illness. He was born in Beaufort County, a son of the late David and Christina Turner Jones Sr. He received his education in the public schools in the Philadelphia area. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a retired nurse with the Manhattan State Hospital. He was also a member of Nazareth New Apostolic Church. Surviving are his wife, Lucille Yvonne Jones of Darlington; four daughters, Yolanda Welbert, Shanikqua Jackson, Kathy Peterson and Laportia Rhodes; Harold Bernard Williams, William Peterson and Kurtis Jackson; two sisters, Lisa Pue and Daver Jones; three brothers, Daniel Jones, David Jones and Harry Jones; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

MARTHA D. FARMER
Services for Martha Dixon Farmer, 56, will be held at 3 p.m.Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2006, at Soul's Harbor Pentecostal Holiness Church where she was a member. Burial will be in Magnolia cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Farmer, who died Sunday, Feb. 19, was born in Hartsville, a daughter of the late Wallace David and Margaret Maples Dixon.

Surviving are her husband, Gene Farmer Sr. of Hartsville; sons, Gene Farmer Jr. of Hartsville, John Farmer of Marion; brothers, Cleveland, Lawrence, William (Buck), Johnny, Timmy Dixon, all of Hartsville, and James David Dixon of Rockingham; and six grandchildren.

MARGURITE M. JONES
Funeral services for Marguerite Melton Jones, 85, will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, 2006, at New Providence Baptist Church. The Revs. Rick Schubert and Bill Stanley will officiate with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends tonight, Feb. 22, from 5 to 7 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Jones, widow of J. Carl Jones Sr., died Monday, Feb. 20. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Norman and Julia Truett Melton. She was a member of New Providence Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the choir.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, J. Carl and Janet Jones of Hartsville, David H. and Sharon Jones of Pensacola, Fla., Howard and Cindy Jones of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Kathryn and Olin Morrison of McBee, Wanda and Harold Galloway of Columbia, Vicki and Ralph Irick of Florence, Celia and Jackie Mixon of Hartsville, Sally and Robert Turbeville of Columbia, Janna and Jerry Davis of Gilbert; sisters, Thelma McLaurin of Wade, N.C., Frances Cox of Hartsville, Mary Hodges of Santee, Carolyn Howell of Hartsville; brother, James Melton of Hartsville; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild. Her grandsons will serve as pall bearers.

Funeral services for Ben McFarland, 62, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Feb. 22, 2006, at Second Baptist Church with burial in Southside Freewill Baptist Church, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. McFarland died Thursday, Feb. 16, at McLeod Hospice Center in Florence. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Joe Brown and Viola Cotton McFarland. He received his education in the public schools in the area. He was a member of Mt. Rona No. 348 Masonic Lodge, Second Baptist Church and trustee board.

Surviving are his wife, Ruby Mae McFarland of Hartsville; one daughter, Rena (Jerome) James of Hartsville; two sons, Bennie (Barbara) McFarland of Lamar and Fredrick Thomas of Florence; seven sisters, Lizzie McDaniel and Lucille McFarland, both of Hartsville, Beatrice Ham of Lydia, Viola McFarland of New York, Easter Mae Brown and Carrie Brown, both of Darlington, Marie Brown of Texas; two brothers, Bo McFarland and William McFarland, both of Hartsville; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
