JAMES BEASLEY
Funeral services for James Beasley were held on Wednesday, May 10, 2006, at 1 p.m. at Apostolic Pentecostal Assembly Church. Burial followed in Florence National cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. Bishop Joe Louis Robinson is the pastor of the church.

Mr. Beasley departed this life Thursday, May 4, after an extended illness. He was born April 5, 1929, in Pennsylvania, a son of the late Manley and Mary Alford Beasley.

Mr. Beasley's parents died while he was a baby and left behind their eight children. His aunt, Lula Chavis, took him and his siblings in and raised them as their own. The Chavis children and the Beasley children grew up as brothers and sisters with lots of love and affection for each other.

At age 15, he moved to Washington, D.C., and lived with other relatives and continued high school through the 11th grade. He then enlisted in the United States Army and spent five years in the military and was honorably discharged. Afterwards, he lived in New York and met Frances McCollough. After a year and a half, they were married and this union was blessed with three children, Michael, Daryl and Ursula.

Mr. Beasley lived in New York for nearly 50 years before relocating to Joppa, Md. While in New York, he worked as a shipping manager for Union Air Transport at JFK Airport for 20 years. Since 1990, Mr. Beasley has battled a number of illnesses, but through it all he kept a positive attitude and outlook.

Surviving to cherish the wonderful memory of James Beasley and prolong his legacy are his wife of nearly 47 years, Frances McCollough Beasley; his three children, Michael Beasley, Ursula Beasley and Daryl Beasley; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his sisters, Mary Beasley-Davis, Mazie Beasley-Anderson, Queen Chavis-Evans, Lula M. Chavis-Hines and Louise Chavis-Hooks; his brothers, James Chavis, Calvin Chavis, Edward Beasley and Manley Beasley; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and very dear friends.

RICHARD MOODY
DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Richard Lonnie Moody, 64, were held at 4:30 p.m. Monday, May 8, 2006, in Black Creek Baptist Church with interment following in the church cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Randy Woods and directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Moody died Saturday, May 6. He was born in Darlington County, son of the late Eugene Andrew 'Pete' and Eleanor Haynes Moody. He served his country in the U.S. Army and was then employed by Dixie Cup. Richard enjoyed hunting, fishing, country music and gathering with his many friends. He attended Black Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving are his daughter, Tammy Moody McNamara of Darlington; his son, Richard L. 'Ricky' Moody Jr. of Darlington; a grandchild, Haley Brooks McNamara; and sister, Jane Moody Turner of Florence.

Mr. Moody was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne E. Moody.

EUGENE COTTON JR.
Funeral services for Eugene Cotton Jr., 50, will be held at 11 a.m Saturday, May 13, 2006, at Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Bethesda Baptist Church, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. Cotton died Tuesday, May 9, at McLeod Hospice House after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Eugene and Lois Graham Cotton Sr. He received his education in the public schools in the area.

Surviving are five sisters, Earline Cotton, Connie Cotton, Beverly (Lucious) Howard and Lois Cotton, all of Hartsville, Pandora (Zeek) Scott of Darlington; two brothers, Ervin (Joyce) Cotton and Ronnie Cotton, both of Hartsville; three aunts, Lillie Robinson of Baltimore, Md., Elzenia W. Benjamin and Dolly Hawkins, both of Hartsville; one uncle, John Cotton of Pinehurst, N.C.; nieces, nephews and a host of other close relatives and friends.

DALE 'TEE' CROSS
DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Welling Dale 'Tee' Cross, 74, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 8, 2006, in the Chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Tim Coker and directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Cross died Friday, May 5, at his residence. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Austin Charles and Cora Jordan Cross.

Surviving are his wife, Peggy Teague Cross of Darlington; three daughters, Cindy Cross of Wilson, N.C., Susan C. (Matt) Ballengee of Greenville, N.C., Cathy C. Tsintzos of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a granddaughter, Phoebe Teeters of Charlotte, N.C.; and a brother, Harvey Cross of Chadburn, N.C.

Mr. Cross was preceded in death by a brother, James Cross.

HATTIE WALTERS
SOCIETY HILL - Funeral services for Hattie Freeman Walters, 72, will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, May 12, 2006, at Harris Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Milton Bradshaw and William Griggs will officiate with burial in Society Hill Latter-day Saints cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Latter-day Saints cemetery Fund, Box 497, Society Hill, SC 29593.

Mrs. Walters, widow of Marvin Thomas Walters, died Wednesday, May 10, 2006. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late Allen and Della Edwards Freeman. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Ricky and Teresa Walters, Dean and Donna Walters all of Byrdtown, Wayne Walters of Society Hill; daughters and sons-in-law, Marlene Walters and Randy Weatherford of Society Hill, Wanda and Frankie Freeman of Hartsville; sisters, Hallie McNatt of Bishopville, Nancy Dixon of Camden, Doris Flury of Florence, Linda Howle of Byrdtown, Faye Howle of Society Hill; brothers, Ronnie Freeman, Delmas Freeman, Carroll Freeman, all of Society Hill; special friends, Corbett and Eleanor Gandy of Darlington; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

LEALER M. HAMMONDS
Mrs. Lealer M. Hammonds died Wednesday, May 10, at McLeod Hospice House after an illness. The family will receive friends at the residence, 3201 Lawford Rd., Hartsville. Hines Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.

FREDERICK WILLIAMS
HAMLET, N.C. - Burial for Frederick 'Baby Face' Williams will be held at 5 p.m. today, May 12, 2006, at the Kingsville United Methodist Church cemetery. Hines Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements. Mr. Williams died Saturday, May 6, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

BETTY STOKES
Funeral services for Betty Matheus Kirkley Stokes, 71, will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 18, 2006, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Dr. Gary Colboch will officiate, with burial in New Providence Baptist cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight, from 5 to 7 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Carolina's Hospice, 121 E. Cedar St., Florence, SC 29501.

Mrs. Stokes died Monday, May 15. Born in Fort Worth, Texas, she was a daughter of the late Warren Benjamin and Annie McDonald Matheus. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Surfside Beach. She was the Hartsville Chamber of Commerce Merchant of the Year in 1976 (Freeman & Smith) and chairperson of the Merchants Division in 1977. She was Civitan of the Year in 1985 and Civitan VSP of the Year in 1986.

Surviving are her husband, Leon Stokes of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Judy Kirkley Miller and James Miller of Glen Burnie, Md., June Stokes Myers and Stanley Myers of Hartsville, Lou Ann Stokes Fishbeck and Gerry Fishbeck of Spartanburg, Debbie Stokes Miller of Hartsville; sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Jack Thetford of Azle, Texas; grandchildren, David Miller, Lisa Miller, Angela Holland, Lane Fishbeck, Alicia Ann Fishbeck, Barry Peavy, Chris Stevens, Eddie Stevens; three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Mertis (Mutt) Kirkley; sisters Joyce Cunningham and Loyce Smith; brother, Darris Matheus.

DORIS BANTA
Funeral services for Doris McKenzie Banta, 87, will be held at 11 a.m. today, May 17, 2006, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. DeVere Williams will officiate with burial in Hebron United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Banta, widow of Charles Banta, died Monday, May 15. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late George W. and Cottie Woodham McKenzie. She was a retired school teacher with more than 30 years of service and was a charter member of the Women of the Moose Chapter 1656.

Surviving are her sister, Zena Josey of Darlington; nephew and niece-in-law, Terry and Vickie Josey of Darlington; grandnephew, Stephen Josey of Darlington.

L.G. DUCKWORTH
PICKENS - A celebration of life for L.G. Duckworth, 92, was held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 12, 2006, in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Howard officiating. Burial followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park & Gardens.

Mr. Duckworth, widower of Rheba R. Duckworth, passed away May 10, at Laurel Hill Living Center. Born in Pickens County, he was a son of the late Samuel Clyde Duckworth and Dora Nations Duckworth. He was a retired engineer and a member of Crescent Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Belinda Copeland of Hartsville; grandchildren, Ashley Burchfield and husband Charlie of Hartsville, Jenifer Duckworth Copeland of Rock Hill; great-grandson, Toby Burchfield; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Ruby and Earl Brown of Six Mile and his companion Delila Meece of Pickens.

Memorials may be made to Crescent Hill Baptist Church Sound System Fund, 115 Crescent Hill Drive, Pickens, SC 29671.

LILLIAN T. JACKSON
Funeral services for Lillian T. Jackson were held on Tuesday, May 16, 2006, at St. John United Methodist Church at 3 p.m. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. Dr. Frederick Yebuah officiated at the service.

Mrs. Jackson was the second child born to Pink and Geneva Davis Jackson. She was born on Sept. 20, 1920, and died on May 12 at her residence in Hartsville.

She was educated in the public schools of Darlington County and graduated from Mayo High School in Darlington, where she was in the top five of her class. She furthered her education at South Carolina State College in Orangeburg, where she received her bachelors and masters degrees.

After graduation from college she began work in her life's passion, which was teaching. She began her teaching career at Robinson Elementary School in Society Hill. She later worked at Cain Elementary School in Darlington. Years later she taught at South Side Elementary School in Hartsville. She ended her 41 years of service at West Hartsville Elementary School in Hartsville. She inspired her nieces, nephews, and other young people she mentored to further their education.

Ms. Jackson was affiliated with many organizations. She was a member of the DCEA, the SCEA, the NEA and the ACT.

She also loved gardening and growing plants. She spent many hours in her vegetable and flower gardens. She always had a lovely yard that she took great pride in. She also had superb oratorical skills and won many accolades. She also loved to read. Ms. Jackson was a lifetime member of St. John United Methodist Church.

She leaves to cherish as well as carry on her legacy three sisters, Darcus (Warren) Barber of Baltimore Md., Elizabeth (the late Wesley) Woodham of Hartsville, Willie Mae (John T.) James of Gastonia, N.C.; one brother, Pink (Elizabeth) Jackson of Hartsville, four nephews Alonzo Pink (Anita) Jackson of Shreveport La., Michael (Lisa) Woodham of Florence, Tyrone (Lisa) James of Gastonia, N.C., and Warren (Cassandra) Barber of Baltimore Md.; seven nieces Barbara White-Pauley and Eunice Evonne Jackson, both of Hartsville, Gwendolyn Barber of Baltimore, Md., Joyce B. (Donald) Debnam of Baltimore, Md., Deborah Barbara of Baltimore, Md., and Wanda B. (Paul) Johnson of Baltimore Md.; six grand nieces; three grand nephews; one aunt, Mrs. Sadie Davis of Florence; and a host of great grand nieces and nephews, cousins and very dear friends along with a devoted caretaker, Ronnie H. Stevenson of Hartsville.

BUDDY NESBITT
DARLINGTON - Graveside funeral services for Heyward Franklin 'Buddy' Nesbitt Jr., 60, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Grove Hill cemetery, officiated by Pastor Todd Parrish and directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Nesbitt died Sunday, May 14. He was born in Dillon County, son of the late Heyward Nesbitt Sr. and Ruth Smith Nesbitt Hudson. He served his country with the United States Air Force and had worked in the steel industry. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are his wife, Norma F. Nesbitt of Darlington; son, Franklin Todd Nesbitt also of Darlington; daughter, Holly Michelle Nesbitt of Sumter; brother, Bill Nesbitt of Laurel Hill, N.C.; and two sisters, Viola Bavitz of Surfside Beach and Gladys Misner of Murrells Inlet.

Mr. Nesbitt was preceded in death by a daughter, Miranda Nesbitt; three brothers, Herman, Jerry and Cletus Nesbitt, and sister, Mildred Jackson.

EDELLE CARTER
LAMAR - Funeral services for Edelle King Carter, 96, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 16, 2006, at Lamar United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Mel Flail and Chaplain Anne Ayres. Interment followed in Lamar Memorial cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home, Lamar Chapel.

Mrs. Carter, widow of Walter Earl Carter, died Sunday, May 14, in the Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee in Florence. She was born in Lee County, July 24, 1909, daughter of the late Wayne Austin and Clyde DuBose King. The family moved to Darlington County shortly after her birth. She received her education in the Lamar schools and Winthrop College.

Mrs. Carter was an active member of Lamar United Methodist Church and served as President of the Burnie-Sue Sunday School Class for 15 years. She was a member of the Coker-Pate Circle and the Sue Stewart Circle of the United Methodist Women. She was a charter member of the Iris Garden Club and also belonged to the Lamar Book and Canasta Club and the Lamar Sew and Chat Club. She loved her church and enjoyed all phases of church work along with sewing and gardening.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Joan and John McKissick of Summerville and Linda and Marvin Slaughter of Florence; daughter-in-law, Sylvia L. Carter; seven grandchildren, Debbie and Rick Call of Summerville, Cindy and Donny McElveen of Winston-Salem, N.C., Mark and Twanda Carter, Carla and Dan Mann, Scott Carter, Marvin E. (Sonny) and Marla Slaughter, all of Florence, Andrew (Andy) and Christy Slaughter of Columbia; great-grandchildren, Richard and Aly Call of Anderson, Joe and Elizabeth Call of Charleston, Kyle McElveen of Winston-Salem, N.C., Megan Carter, Matthew Carter, both of Columbia, Mark Carter Jr., Mara Carter, Kirsten Mann and Trent Mann, all of Florence, Drew Slaughter, Mary Hagen Slaughter, both of Columbia. She is also survived by one niece and four nephews and several great-nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Carter was preceded in death by her son, Walter Earl (Bud) Carter Jr., four brothers and their wives, James A. and Ruth King of Columbia, Marvin W. and Frances King of Lamar, Bizzan D. and Helen King of Florence and Wayne A. and Anne King of Surfside Beach.

CHARLES R. MIMS
FLORENCE - Funeral services for Charles Richard Mims, 57, were held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 1, 2006, in Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home Chapel. A private burial was held at a later date in Florence National cemetery, with services conducted by the Rev. David C. Surrett.

Mr. Mims died Friday, April 28, in a Florence hospital after a brief illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Maisie Smothers Mims and the late Gary Elbert Mims. He was a 1967 graduate of Hartsville High School and attended the University of South Carolina. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force. He was formerly employed by Sonoco Products of Hartsville, General Electric of Florence and was employed by Jacob Plumbing at the time of his death.

Surviving are his mother of Hartsville; a son, Gregory Sellers of Florence; two daughters, Christie (George) Mills of Myrtle Beach and Jennifer Mims of Florence; grandchildren, Jennifer Brooke Mims of Florence, David Mills and Christian Mills of Myrtle Beach; brother, Gary (Judith) Mims of Darlington; and two nieces, Haylea (Daniel) Jordan of Florence and Dr. Schuyler K. Mims of Isle of Palms.

Memorials may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church, 145 E. College Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550; Epworth's Children's Home, PO Box 50466, Columbia, SC 29250; or to a charity of one's choice.
