HAZEL L. McPHAIL
SOCIETY HILL - Funeral services for Hazel Lincoln McPhail, 62, were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 6, 2006, at New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church. Burial followed services in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. McPhail died Saturday, July 1, at Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C.

Mrs. McPhail was born in Darlington County, a daughter of Lucille McClain Lincoln and the late Chester Arthur Lincoln.

She received her education in the public schools in the area. At an early age she joined New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church and later joined St. John Temple in Society Hill. While living in North Carolina she attended Refuge House of God Deliverance Ministries.

Surviving are her mother, Lucille M. Lincoln of Society Hill; two daughters, Sherry L. McPhail of Charlotte, N.C. and Jaclyn McFarland of Florence; one son, Johnny (LaTonya) McPhail of Charlotte, N.C.; nine grandchildren, Travis L. Singletary Jr., Todd Dexxmond Peoples, Jalann McPhail, Erika McPhail and Sharisse Daziah McPhail, all of Charlotte, N.C.; Jonathan David McPhail of Houston, Texas; Jared Antonio McFarland, Byron Ezekial McFarland and Marlon Denzel McFarland, all of Hartsville; a special nephew, Jerome (Joyce) Allen of Buffalo, N.Y.; a foster daughter, Patrice Antrum of Hartsville; two sisters, Arthurine Perkins of Society Hill and Anna (Willie) Davis of Columbia; two brothers, Ernest J. Lincoln and Minister Arthur (Dorothy) Lincoln Jr., both of Hartsville; two sisters-in-law, Florie Sellers of Society Hill and Norma Jean Lincoln of Columbia; one brother-in-law, Frank McPhail Sr. of Darlington; two aunts, Laura W. Smith of Columbia and Viola Byrd of New Jersey; a spiritual sister, Lucille F. Drayton of Society Hill; a goddaughter, LaToyia Chavis of Darlington; a special friends, Addie Bell Robinson of Darlington; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

LEE SHAW
McBEE - Funeral services for Lee Shaw, 92, will be Sunday, July 9, 2006, at 1:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home. The Rev. C. Gary Compton will officiate. Burial will be in the McBee cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Shaw, widower of Maude Campbell Shaw, died July 6. He was born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Waldon C. and Maggie Walters Shaw. He was a member of Hebron UMC and retired from the S.C. Highway Department.

Surviving are a daughter, Marilea (C.J.) Collins of Wake Forest, N.C.; daughter-in-law, Virginia Shaw of McBee; sisters, Gladys Sullivan of Lancaster and Genolia Deese of Kershaw; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Walter C. Shaw.

MARTHA S. REYNOLDS
Graveside services for Martha Faye Sellers Reynolds, 56, will be held today, July 7, 2006, at 4 p.m. in Magnolia cemetery, directed of Norton Funeral Home of Hartsville.

Mrs. Reynolds, wife of John Reynolds, died July 5. She was born in Bennettsville, the daughter of the late Lollie Beverly Sellers. She was employed with the American Red Cross.

Surviving other than her husband of Wilmington, N.C. are a daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Huey Galloway of Hartsville; sisters, Ruth McArthur of Darlington, Mary Lee of Martinsville, Va., and Diane Floyd of Bennettsville; and four grandchildren.

LYDIA M. CUMBEE
NORTH CHARLESTON - The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Cumbee invite you to attend the funeral service of the latter, Lydia M. Cumbee, which will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 8, 2006, at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Burial and committal services fill follow in Carolina Memorial Park. Friends may call from the hours of 6 to 8 p.m. this evening, July 7, at the funeral home.

Mrs. Cumbee died Monday, July 3, at a local hospital after a long bout with cancer. She was born on April 6, 1944, in Darlington County, to the late Hardee Rogers and Lucille Gainey Rogers. She graduated from McBee High School and was a stocker with Piggy Wiggly Carolina Company. She loved flowers, gardening and canning vegetables and going fishing with her husband and taking care of her family. Mrs. Cumbee was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by her husband of 29 years, James E. Cumbee of North Charleston; three daughters, Cynthia Lynn Cumbee of North Charleston, Toni Annette Barnitz of Miami, Fla., and Kim Barnitz of CoCo Beach, Fla.; one brother Hardee Rogers Jr., of Cassett; and one granddaughter, Stevie Rae Barnitz of CoCo Beach, Fla.

RICHARD M. SAMIEC
Richard Michael Samiec, 76, of Southwest Ranches, died Saturday, July 1, 2006, in Hartsville following a struggle with cancer. Born in Grand Rapids, Mich., he was the son of the late Michael and Maryanna Samiec. A South Florida resident since 1958, he was a customer service representative for Capital Airlines, United Airlines and Eastern Airlines at both Miami and Ft. Lauderdale airports. He was preceded in death by his wife, Luanna, and sisters Helen, Veronica and Pauline.

His survivors include daughters, Lynn (Jim) Philips of Lancaster, Paula (Greg) Bailey, Hartsville; his sister, Francis Lung, Clearwater, Fla.; a brother, Wallace Samiec of San Mateo, Calif.; seven nephews; five nieces; one granddaughter; one step-grandson; two step-grandaughters.

DENNY HAMMOND JR.
A memorial service for Clyde Denton 'Denny' Hammond Jr., 60, were conducted by the Rev. Kendall Williams in the Chapel of Belk Funeral Home on Thursday, July 6, 2006, at 11 a.m.

Mr. Hammond died Tuesday, July 4, at his residence. He was born in Florence County, son of the late Clyde Denton and Maude Elizabeth Doughty Hammond. He was formerly employed by Sonoco and was the owner and operator of Hammonds Commercial Refrigeration Service. Denny was an active member and supporter of AA for over 18 years and enjoyed spending time on the water, especially while fishing. Mr. Hammond was a member of Philadelphia Southern Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Sarah O'Neal Teal Hammond of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Dede and Stanford Hanna of Darlington; a granddaughter, Sara Ellen Hanna; a brother, George (Patty) Hammond of Florence; a sister, Pat Melton of Darlington; two step-daughters and a son-in law, Billie T. and Ben Roling of Florence and Shannon Teal of Charlotte, N.C.; a step-grandson, Blake Teal of Charlotte, N.C.; his mother-in-law, Granny Esma, and a loving friend and companion, Lyn Ham of Hartsville.

JENNINGS A. SMITH
Funeral services for Jennings Amos Smith, 60, will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 13, 2006, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Danny Pierce and Buddy Amerson will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight, July 12, from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Helping Hands Hospice, 202 S. 2nd St., Hartsville, SC 29550 or Cornerstone Baptist Church, Box 1470, Hartsville, SC 29551.

Mr. Smith died Tuesday, July 11. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of the late Amos L. Z. and Helen Munn Smith. He was a graduate of Hartsville High School and Columbia Commercial College. He served in the National Guard and was retired from Sonoco Products Credit Union and Gowen Chrysler Dodge Jeep. He was a charter member of North Hartsville Baptist Church and Cornerstone Baptist Church. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and was a true friend and gentleman to all who knew him. He loved all sports and was the definition of a 'true fan' to the #43 NASCAR team. He loved hunting, fishing, softball and spending time with his friends and family.

Surviving are his wife, Grace Blackwell Smith of Hartsville; daughters and son-in-law, Paige and Jason Webster, Jenanne Smith, all of Hartsville; sisters and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Charles Dampier of Hartsville, and Teresa Smith of Charleston; grandchildren, Tanner Webster, Emily Webster, Bailee Smith; special caregiver, Ann B. Sams.

BILLY PARNELL
LAMAR - Funeral services for William 'Billy' P. Parnell, 74, were held 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, 2006, in Lamar First Baptist Church, with interment following in Lamar cemetery, officiated by the Revs. Michael Parnell and Tom Brown, directed by Belk Funeral Home, Lamar.

Mr. Parnell died Sunday July 2, at his residence. He was born in Darlington County, son of the late Preston G. 'Buster' and Lois Player Parnell. After serving in the National Guard, he was an electrician for Dupont until his retirement. Billy was a caring husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed singing in the choir at his church, Lamar First Baptist, where he was also a church deacon.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Vermelle Pope Parnell of the home; two sons, the Rev. Michael (Bonnie) Parnell, Chris Parnell, all of Lamar; a daughter, Terri (Jerry) Godbold of Cheraw; 13 grandchildren, five great grandchildren; two brothers, Don (Lettie) Parnell of Columbia, and Larry (Pat) Parnell of Lamar; and several nieces and nephews. BILLIE HUMPHRIES
Funeral services for Billie Moore Humphries, 76, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 10, 2006, at Forest Hills Baptist Church. The Rev. John Smith officiated with burial in Mount Hope cemetery, Florence, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210, or the American Diabetes Association, 2711 Middleburg Dr. Suite 311, Columbia, SC 29204.

Mrs. Humphries, widow of Kirven Robert (Bobby) Humphries Jr., died Saturday, July 8. Born in Bishopville, she was a daughter of the late John L. and Bonita Kelly Moore. She was a member of Forest Hills Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Central High School in Bishopville and attended McLeod Infirmary Nursing School in 1949. She was employed with Drs. Price, McLain and Hart Pediatrics and retired from McLeod Regional Medical Center in 1987.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Kirven R. and Mary Humphries III of Charleston; sister and brother-in-law, Minnie and Bob Lee of Hartsville; brother and sister-in-law, John L. and Mary Moore Jr. of Santee; nieces, Virginia Lee of Atlanta, Ga., Lynne and Steve Sauls of Santee, Betsy and Joey Howle of Hartsville; nephews, Chip and Kathy Lee of Hartsville, Jay Moore of Santee; several great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Gordon Humphries.

JOHN A. MORRISON SR.
Services for John A. Morrison Sr., 83, were held at 5 p.m. Sunday, July 9, 2006, at New Market United Methodist Church with the Rev. Scott Petry officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Mr. Morrison, who died July 7, was born in Hartsville, a son of the late Findley F. Morrison Sr. and Ella Jane Cox Morrison. He was a member of New Market United Methodist Church, a retired Truck Driver and a veteran of World War II.

Surviving are sons, Hal Morrison of Conway, John A. (Rocky) Morrison Jr. of Patrick, Eric A. Morrison of West Virginia; daughter, Brandy Morrison of West Virginia; brothers, Findley F. Morrison Jr. and Scott Morrison of Hartsville; sisters, Addie Jones of Columbia of Georgia Mae Morrison of Greenville; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

CHARLES W. NEWMAN
MURRELLS INLET - Charles W. Newman, 78, of Wesley Road, died Thursday, July 6, 2006, at the Medical University of South Carolina following an illness. He was born June 28, 1928, in McBee, a son of the late Boyde Judson and Nettie Jeanette Warren Newman. He attended Murrells Inlet Pentecostal Holiness Church, was a member of DAV Chapter 30 and an avid baseball card dealer and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara JoAnn Roger Newman of Murrells Inlet; one son, Charles Kenneth 'Kenny' Newman and wife, Robin of Murrells Inlet; one brother, Bennie Newman of Aiken; one sister, Bernice Blackwell of Hartsville; one grandson, Casey Joseph Newman of Murrells Inlet.

Funeral services were held at 12 p.m. Saturday, July 8, at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel. Burial followed in Hillcrest cemetery. Memorials may be made to Murrells Inlet-Garden City Fire Department, PO Box 48, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576.

BETTY HENDRIX
LAMAR - Funeral services for Betty Stringfield Hendrix, 80, were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 5, 2006, in the Lamar Chapel of Belk Funeral Home, with interment following in Lamar cemetery.

Mrs. Hendrix died Sunday, July 2, at her residence. She was born in Blackville (Aiken), daughter of the late Dan Henderson and Bell Elizabeth Powell Stringfield. She was a housewife and a member of Fair Hope Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Azalee Smith of Lamar, Jeanette Anglin of Pickens; four sons, Roy E. Rutland of Ft. Lawn, John B. Rutland of Wareplace, David R. Rutland of Easley, Don H. Rutland of Greenville; 18 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; and a sister, Evie Hutto of Langley.

CAROL G. KNORR
Funeral services for Carol Gainey Knorr, 64, were held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, July 9, 2006, in the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Knorr, who died Thursday, July 6, was born in Hartsville daughter of the late Alfred and Mary Gainey.
