LILLIAN D. HUNT
Funeral services for Lillian Davis Hunt, 98, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 9, 2006, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ladell Humphries officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery. Memorials may be made to North Hartsville Baptist Church, 1117 Patrick Highway, Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Hunt, widow of John Dwight Hunt Sr., died Friday, July 7, 2006. Born in Hartsville, she was a daughter of the late George W. and Mollie Hatchell Davis. She was a charter member of North Hartsville Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years. Lillian graduated from Rex Hospital School of Nursing in 1929. She took a break from nursing to raise her son and returned to work in 1978 at Bethea Baptist Home, where she continued until her retirement in her 80s.

Surviving are her grandchildren, Neil Hunt of Sumter, Robin Hunt Schmidt of Summerville; daughter-in-law, Shirley Hunt of Sumter; five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, John Hunt Jr.; sisters, Ruby Veselak and Catherine Spiering.

JEWELL SELLERS
DARLINGTON - A graveside service for Jewell Patricia Taylor Sellers, 76, will be held at 3 p.m. today, July 12, 2006, in Florence National cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Sellers died Sunday, July 9, in a local hospital. She was born in Chicago, Ill., on Feb. 28, 1930. Jewell was a loving and devoted housewife, who also loved her dogs very much. She was the widow of Henry O. Sellers.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Michael 'Mike' and Dawn Sellers of Florence; two daughters and a son-in-law, Gloria Griffin, Debbie and Danny Stokes, all of Darlington; grandchildren, Khristine Harwood of West Virginia, Barbara (Tim) Davis of Wisconsin, Stephen (Patricia) Griffin of Oklahoma, Elizabeth Kemmerlin, Brandon Kemmerlin, both of Darlington, Scarlett Sellers of Florence; great-grandchildren, Amber Hatridge, Derrick Hatridge, Grayson Griffin all of Oklahoma, Chelsea, Hannah, Olivia Davis, all of Wisconsin, and Bobby and Josh Harwood of West Virginia.

WILLIE 'MUD' LOVE
Willie Odell 'Mud' Love, 81, died Tuesday, July 11, 2006, at her residence after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 918 Mondora St., Lot #26, Hartsville.

CARRINE GAINEY
Carrine Thompson Gainey, 92, died Tuesday, July 11, 2006. Private family services will be held, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

VENICE T. LEMMONS
DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Venice Truett Lemmons, 87, were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 13, 2006, in the Chapel of Belk Funeral Home, with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery.

Mrs. Lemmons, wife of Mack Lemmons Sr., died Monday, July 10, in a local hospital. She was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late George E. and Rebecca Grant Truett. Venice was a loving wife and mother and worked for Dixie Cup for many years. She was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband of 63 years, Mack Lemmons Sr.; a son and daughter-in-law, Arthur Mack Lemmons Jr. and Sandra of Durham, N.C.; three grandchildren, Angela Dawn Duty, Rebecca Massengill, Jennifer Ann Price; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Eloise T. Michau of Darlington.

Mrs. Lemmons was preceded in death by a grandson, Samuel Harold Lemmons, five brothers and a sister.

Memorials may be made to Epworth United Methodist Church, 706 Pearl St., Darlington, SC 29532.

GERALD REID
Gerald Reid, 61, died Wednesday, July 12, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.

MAZAREE GILLESPIE
Funeral services for Mazaree Gillespie were held on Saturday, July 8, 2006, at 3 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. The Rev. Edward J. Squire is the pastor of Mt. Calvary, and Elder Parrish Paul Powell, the grandson of Mrs. Gillespie, officiated the service.

Mrs. Gillespie was born on June 12, 1933 in Darlington County. She was the daughter of the late Peter Backus Sr. and the late Rosa Lee Backus. She attended Darlington County Schools.

Mrs. Gillespie migrated to New Jersey and was employed with Overlook Hospital in Summit, N.J. During this time, she met and married her beloved husband, Nebraska Gillespie, and made a loving home in Springfield, N.J., for her children and grandchildren.

She was an active member of Antioch Baptist Church in Springfield, N.J., where she served on the Usher Board and served in the Pastorial Hospital Ministry. When she returned to Hartsville, she reunited with Mount Calvary Baptist Church.

Mrs. Gillespie was preceded in death by her beloved husband Nebraska 'Shaw' Gillespie, who referred to her affectionately as his 'sweet darling, ' her dedicated daughter Ruth M. Powell and her brother and friend Peter Jr. 'Buddy' Bachus.

She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Mary Powell of Hartsville and Deloris (Dennis III) Jeter of Temple Hills, Md.; three sisters, Stella (Clarkie) Carmichael, Dorothy (Lionel) Overton and Partinola Horton; two brothers, Lee Bachus and Eddie Bachus; eight grandchildren, Elder Parrish (Teresa) Powell of Winston- Salem, N.C., Tech. Sgt. Ernest (DeAnna) LeGrande of Spangdahlem Air Force Base, Germany, Jemell Powell of Trenton, N.J., Camille (Napoleon) Clark of Irvington, N.J., Katrina Jeter of Baltimore, Md., Jason Jeter of Temple Hills, Md., Lateaf (Angelica) Powell of Hartsville and Khaliah T. Powell of Plainfield, N.J.; 10 great-grandchildren, Alex Powell, Marcus Powell, Janay Powell, Derrick Powell, Persia Mary Powell, Mia M. LeGrande, Bobbie J. LeGrande, Ernest LeGrandee III, Tayja Jeter and Xavier A. Clark; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews, other close relatives and dear friends.

ELEASE WILSON
DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Elease Lee Wilson, 78, will be held in the Chapel of Belk Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 15, 2006. Interment will follow in Grove Hill cemetery, officiated by Dr. Kenneth Sandifer.

Mrs. Wilson, wife of Woodrow Wilson, passed away Thursday, July 13, in a local hospital. She was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late Guyan F. and Myrtle Hammond Lee. Elease retired from James Rivers after 39 years of faithful service, and also served on the Dixie Federal Credit Union Board. She was a member of the Omar Temple's Provette's (Ladies Auxiliary) and enjoyed her grandchildren, flowers and traveling. Mrs. Wilson was a member of Darlington First Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Woodrow Wilson of the home; a son, John Floyd Wilson of Darlington; a daughter, Janet Wilson (Andy) Ward of Erwin, Tenn.; grandchildren, Megan (Mark) Silvers, Robin, Christopher and Sara Currie; a great-grandchild, Jonah Silver; five brothers, Tommy (Jean) Lee of Hartsville, Guyan Floyd (Luanne) Lee Jr. of Florence, Donald Allen (Pat) Lee of Maryland, Larry William (Joyce) Lee of Fort Mill and Ralph (Betty) Floyd of Sanford, Fla.

Mrs. Wilson was preceded in death by two sisters, Sara Frances Pritchard and Ruth Lee, and two brothers, Frank and R.E. Lee.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, July 14, at Belk Funeral Home.

ALICE J. NEWMAN
SUMTER - Funeral services for Alice Jeanette Newman, 71, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 22, 2006, in the First Church of God with the Rev. Ron Bower and the Rev. Aaron Ferry officiating. Burial will be in the Concord Presbyterian Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, July 21, at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Mrs. Newman, widow of Richard D. West and David E. Newman, died Tuesday, July 18, at her home. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Murray Thomas Rogers and the late Grace Allgood Rogers. She was also preceded in death by her step-mother, Ruby T. Rogers. Mrs. Newman was a member of the First Church of God and the Young at Heart. She was retired from J.C. Penney.

Survivors include five children, Tommy West and his wife, Gail, Pat Scarborough, Billy West and his wife, Sharon, and Debbie Trask and her husband, David, all of Sumter, and Gary Odom and his wife, Patsy, of Birmingham, Ala.; a sister, Mary Ann Hammonds of Kannapolis, N.C.; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a special friend, Shirley Thorpe; and two special nieces, Ginger Wise and Donna Griffin.

Pallbearers will be Jim Baker, Claude Newman, Eric Dial, Robbie Singleton, Jason Pearson and David Trask.

Dr. Dorn Smith will serve as an honorary pallbearer.

GERALD REID
Funeral services for Gerald Reid, 61, were held 2 p.m. Sunday, July 16, 2006, at Kay Branch Missionary Baptist Church. Burial followed services in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.

Mr. Reid, died Wednesday, July 12, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. He was born in Kannapols, N.C., a son of the late Gatither and Sally Reid. He received his education in the North Carolina public school systems. He was employed at Flour Daniel Company for many years until retirement and attended Faith Mission Apostolic Church.

Surviving are his wife, Regina Abson Reid of Hartsville; one son, Marlon Smitherton of Kannapolis, N.C.; four step-daughters, Wanda Jacobs, Michelle Jacobs and Melissa Jacobs, all of Hartsville, and Jacqueline Jacobs Quandr of Washington, D.C.; one brother, Lawrence Evans of Troy, N.C.; 12 grandchildren and a host of other close relatives and friends.

WILLIE ODELL LOVE
Funeral services for Willie Odell 'Mud' Love, 81, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 15, 2006, at Centerville A.M.E. church. Burial followed services in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.

Ms. Love died Tuesday, July 11, at her residence. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late John and Bessie Berry Love. She received her education in the public schools in the area. Mrs. Love was employed as a health care caregiver for many years and was a member of Centerville A.M.E. church.

Surviving are one daughter, Betty Love Thomas of Washington, D.C.; one son, Robert Love of Hartsville; one brother, Charlie Love; an adopted sister, Lillian Alford of Hartsville; one daughter-in-law, Linda Love of Hartsville; 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and host of other close relatives and friends.

MARY ANN BALLANTYNE
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - A memorial service for Ann Ballantyne, 71, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 28, 2006, in Charlotte at Sharon Presbyterian Church, 5201 Sharon Rd., followed by interment at the church columbarium. There will be a reception at 3 p.m. at the The Cypress Club, 3442 Cypress Club Drive.

Mrs. Ballantyne, formerly of Durham, died Monday, July 24, at Duke University Medical Center after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born March 11, 1935, in Iowa City, Iowa, daughter of the late Evald and Helga Jensen Olsen. She graduated from West Branch High School and the Mercy School of Nursing in Iowa City. She married Robert H. Ballantyne in 1956. Mrs. Ballantyne received her B.S.N degree from Washington State University, and graduated from the University Of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a master's degree in public health. She worked as a nurse recruiter for Duke Medical Center for 20 years.

'Mimi, ' as she was known to her six grandchildren, left a legacy of kindness and generosity. Upon retiring in Charlotte, she served as a community volunteer and elder for her church, Sharon Presbyterian Church, and with the Volunteer Guild at Discovery Place.

She is survived by her husband Robert; her brother, Arne Olsen and his wife, Carol; her daughters, Shelli Wilson of Hartsville, Kerri Bridges, of Raleigh, N.C., Robbi Ott, of Charlotte, N.C.; her son Brian, of Cary, N.C.; sons-in-law, Bill Wilson, Todd Bridges, and Michael Ott; and her grandchildren, Emily and Meg Wilson, Cameron and Claire Bridges, and Haelli and Madison Ott.

Her family would like to thank Dr. Jennifer Garst, Dr. Tommy D'Amico, Dr. Kevin Waters and all the nursing staff at Duke Medical Center for their outstanding care and compassion.
