CHRISTINE MILLHOUSE
VIRGINIA - Christine Millhouse, 78, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2006, in Alexandria hospital after an illness. Funeral services will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

MICHAEL WATFORD
Private services for Michael Jennings Watford, 28, were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, 2006, in the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home, with pastor Vernon R. LeBuhn, officiating. Burial will be in the Newman Swamp cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mr. Watford died Monday, July 31. He was born in Florence.

Surviving are his mother and step-father, Audrey and Layton Miles of Hartsville; father and step-mother, Mike and Susan Watford of Lamar; sister, Michelle Watford of Hartsville; maternal grandparents, Tom and Milladean Carpenter of Hartsville; and paternal grandmother, Faye Amerson Watford of Lamar.

He was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Laverne Watford.

Memorials may be made to the Church of God at Palmetto Street, 3132 W. Palmetto Street, Florence, SC, 29501.

BARBARA ANN ISEMAN
DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Barbara Ann Adams Iseman, 66, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Aug. 4, 2006, in the Chapel of Belk Funeral Home, with interment following in Darlington Memory Gardens, officiated by the Rev. Todd Parrish.

Mrs. Iseman, who was married to the late Thomas J. Iseman for 46 years, died at home on Tuesday, Aug.1. She was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late John Quincy and Edith Hoffman Adams. She faithfully attended and supported Temple Free Will Baptist Church up until the time of her illness.

They had two daughters, Gail (Roy) Carter of Florence, Lisa (Allen) Edwards of Darlington; a special grandson, Eddie 'Peanut' Carter; a granddaughter, Tonya Carnell; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Evelyn Gandy of Darlington and Betty Elkins of Hartsville; a longtime friend, Judy Cox, and Jackie Floyd, who helped care for her during her sickness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy, and sisters, Hazel Aldridge, Johnny Mae Jordan and Margaret Gainey.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Temple Free Will Baptist Church, PO Box 287, Darlington, SC 29540

JACK A. BROWN
Funeral services for Jack Archie Brown, 51, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, 2006, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Billy Melton will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight, Aug. 4, from 5-7 at the funeral home.

Mr. Brown died Tuesday, Aug. 1. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Jack Archie and Annie Langley Brown.

Surviving are his wife, Judy Flowers of Hartsville; son, Jason Brown of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Hope and Mike Paradee of Sacramento, Calif. Crystal and Ray Gardner of Hartsville; sister and brother-in-liw, Martha and Mel Hall of Gaffney; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ricky Brown, Mike and Jean Brown, Mark and Connie Mixon, all of Hartsville; grandson, Dalton Gardner; special aunts and uncles, Ola and Jerry Hayes, Celia and Murray Griggs.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Fran Boan.

JAMES H. COOKS
Funeral services for James Henry Cooks, will be held on Thursday, Aug. 10, 2006, at 3 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Edward J. Squire, pastor of the church will officiate the services.

Mr. Cooks was born Oct. 10, 1910, in Bishopville, a son of the late Paul and Annie Prescott Cooks. He was educated in the public schools of Lee County. He was a farmer all of his life. At the time of his retirement, he was working for the late A.S. Mozingo.

Mr. Cooks was married to the late Mary Sumpter Cooks. This union was blessed with seven children and a niece that was raised as a daughter. One of his sons, James Cooks, Jr. and a daughter, Thelma Lane Majors, preceded him in death. He was a lifetime member of the Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church where he served in many capacities; Deacon Board, Willing Workers, Usher Board, and he sang in Choir No. 1.

Surviving to cherish the loving memory and carry on the legacy of the Mr. James Henry Cooks, include four daughters Bessie (Bobby) Woodham and Jessie (Cliff) Woodham, both of Jersey City, N.J., Jannie (Alex) Holloman of Hartsville, and Barbara (James) Durante of Bishopville; two sons, Elex Cooks of Jersey City, N.J., and Charles (Lillie) Cooks of Hartsville; an adopted spiritual son, the Rev. Ira Timmons Jr. of Florence; one sister, Pearl Graham of Washington, D.C.; a daughter-in-law, Florida M. Cooks of Hartsville; one sister-in-law, Laura Brunson of New York, N.Y.; one brother-in-law Nathaniel Pooler of Hartsville; 35 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren and a host of special nieces, nephews, other relatives, and very dear friends.

CARRIE McRAE CAULK
BENNETTSVILLE - Carrie Lee McRae Caulk, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2006. She was a native of Maxton, N.C., and the daughter of the late Fred and Janie McRae. For the past several years she had been living at the Morrell Nursing Home in Hartsville.

She is survived by a step-daughter, Betty Caulk Derrick of Bennettsville; several nieces and nephews of North Carolina; a cousin, Cliff Jones of Hartsville and Halbert Jones of Maxton, N.C.

She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church of Bennettsville.

MILDRED T. GAINEY
Funeral services for Mildred Tyner Gainey, 67, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2006, at Cedar Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Teddy Moore and Ed Griggs officiated, with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Gainey died Sunday, Aug. 6. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Lonnie and Thelma Anderson Tyner. She was a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, L.A. Gainey of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Felicia Gainey of Cassatt; daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Troy Chisholm of Patrick; sisters, Mary Player of Myrtle Beach, Lois O'neal of Patrick, Judy Howle of Hartsville; brothers, Lonnie E. Tyner and Bobby Tyner, both of Patrick, and Ronnie Tyner of Hartsville.

JEAN V. HARRIS
Funeral services for Jean Verner Harris were held on Monday, Aug. 7, at 4 p.m. at Mt. Calvary AME Church. The burial followed at the Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. The Rev. E. Robert Thomas, the pastor of Mt. Calvary, officiated the service.

Mrs. Harris was born Sept. 7, 1937, in Darlington County, a daughter of Henry Verner and Mozetta Wright Verner. She was educated in the public schools of the county and graduated with high honors from Butler High School in 1955.

While at Butler, she played on the varsity basketball team, was the head majorette and was voted 'Most Likely To Succeed' by her graduating class. From there, she attended Cortez Peters Business College in Washington, D.C.

While in Washington, she met and married her first husband, Master Sgt. Joseph T. Harris Sr. This union was blessed with three sons. She and her husband traveled to Germany, South America and Panama. She also lived in Ft. Knox, Ky., Staten Island, N.Y., and Columbia, Md. She was very active in military distaff. After her husband's death in 1974, she moved back to Hartsville and operated her own business. She was also a homemaker. Shortly after her move back to Hartsville, she met her second husband, Hubert 'Sonny' Johnson Jr. This relationship endured for 32 years.

She was a member Mt. Calvary AME Church and received her 50-year membership certificate in 2003. She was also a member of the Missionary Society and was crowned 'Missionary Queen' in 2004.

Surviving to cherish the loving memory and continue the legacy of Jean Verner Harris include her husband, Hubert L. Johnson Jr. of Hartsville; three sons, Richie C. Harris of Lynchburg, S.C., Kevin L. Harris of Charlotte, N.C., and Joseph T. (Romona) Harris Jr. of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one brother, William C. (Dorothy) Verner of Washington, D.C.; five grandchildren, Patrick Blakney, Joe T. Harris, Jean Michelle Harris, Henry H. Harris and Ingrid F. Harris; one niece, Sharon Marrow, one nephew, Arnandez Larkin and a host of other close relatives and very dear friends.

WANDA G. CROWLEY
Services for Wanda Gail Hinson Crowley, 53 were held Monday, Aug. 7, 2006, at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home. Burial was in Chapel Hill Baptist Church cemetery.

Ms. Crowley, who died Aug. 5, was the daughter of the late Bobby and Betty Baxley Hinson.

Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Glenda and Buster Faile of Hartsville; sisters, Susan Hardee of Wilmington, N.C. Ruby Boone of Lexington; brothers, Robert Wayne Hinson of McBee, Kenneth and Mitchell Hinson of Hartsville; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by son Scotty Hopkins.

LISA MARIE PRATT
Funeral services for Lisa Marie Pratt, 34, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, 2006, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Jeff Gardner officiated with burial in McBee cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Society of Nephrology, 1725 I Street NW, Suite 510, Washington, D.C., 20006 or American Liver Foundation, 1425 Pompton Avenue, Suite 3, Cedar Grove, N.J. 07009.

Mrs. Pratt died Friday, Aug. 4, 2006. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of Jackie L. Gainey and Linda Hawkins Jones. She was a member of Mission for Christ. She graduated from Hartsville High School and was an LPN for six years.

Surviving are her sons, John 'Wesley' Pratt and Justin Pratt, both of Hartsville; daughters, Heather Pratt and Lauren Winburn, both of, Hartsville; stepsons, Christopher Winburn and Cameron Winburn, both of Hartsville; stepdaughter, Amber Winburn of Hartsville; father of Marysville, Calif.; mother of Camden; brother, Daniel Gainey of McBee; stepsisters, Sheila Tyner and Angela Fales, both of Hartsville; halfsister, Becky Gainey of Marysville, Calif. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Charlie and Lula Gainey; maternal grandparents, Coke and Betty Hawkins.

J. T. GRIGGS
WREN, Miss. - Services for J.T. Griggs, 83, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 7, 2006, at the Nettleton Church of Christ with Bro. Jimmy Bates and Bro. Tommy Lawson officiating. Burial was in Nettleton cemetery, with Tisdal-Lann Memorial Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Griggs died Saturday, Aug. 5, at North Mississippi Medical Center. He was born Oct. 22, 1922, in Monroe County to Robert Bryant and Gertrude Webb Griggs. He lived most of his life in Wren. Mr. Griggs was a retired employee of Atlas Truck Body in Wren after 30 years of service and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was also a member of the Nettleton Church of Christ, where he was a Sunday school teacher, song leader, and a fill-in preacher over the years. He enjoyed studying the Bible and leading singing.

Survivors include one daughter, Judy Bates and her husband, Larry of Saltillo; three sons, Frankie Griggs and his wife Georgia of Vicksbury, Bobby Griggs and his wife, Jimmie Lou of Nettleton, Wendell Griggs and his wife, Nancy of Hartsville; two sisters, Laura Worthey and Laverne Ritter of Smithville; one sister-in-law, Ruby Griggs of Amory; 12 grandchildren, Renee Childers and her husband, Mike of Mooreville, Michael Bates and his wife Kathy, of Batesville, David Bates of Sherman, Shea and Sean Griggs of Vicksburg, Michael Eubank of Glasgow, Scotland, Abe Eubank, Kirstina and Anzhelika Griggs, all of Hartsville, Kelly Todd of Cordova, Tenn., Ryan Todd and his wife, Sarah of Pontotoc, LaChresha Todd of Tupelo; four great-grandchildren, Stuart and Scott Childers of Mooreville, Kellee Liles of Batesville, Lindsey Todd of Cordova, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Truvell Worthey Griggs, who died on Aug. 8, 2005; his parents; a infant daughter, Audrey Kay Griggs; two sisters, Delon Thompson and Sally Edith Broughman; two brothers, Harold Eugene Griggs and Robert Bryant Griggs.

Pallbearers were Michael Bates, David Bates, Mike Childers, Shea Griggs, Sean Griggs and Gerald Worthey.

JIMMY DeWITT
Funeral services for James 'Jimmy' Monroe DeWitt, 56, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 7, 2006, at West Hartsville Baptist Church. The Rev. Paul Sullivan officiated, with burial in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the West Hartsville Baptist Church, 1003 W. Carolina Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mr. DeWitt died Friday, Aug. 4. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of the late Monroe M. and Dorothy Straup DeWitt. He was a member of West Hartsville Baptist Church and was a graduate of Clemson University. He was a coach and teacher at Thomas Hart Academy for many years and also worked with young kids at Hartsville High School.

Surviving are his daughters, Kacee Dewitt and Jenna DeWitt, both of Hartsville; brother, M. Gregg Dewitt of Florence; grandchild, Wyatt James Purvis; mother of his children, Jennifer L. DeWitt of Hartsville; nephew, Parker DeWitt.

CHARLES E. KELLY JR.
DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Charles Edward Kelly Jr., 78, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, 2006, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery.

Mr.Kelly died Friday, Aug. 4, at McLeod Hospice House. He was born in Darlington County, son of the late Charles E. Kelley Sr. and Viola Feagin Kelly. He served his country with the United States Air Force and retired from Union Carbide. Mr. Kelly enjoyed watching NASCAR, football and talking with friends over the computer. He especially enjoyed time spent with his grandson and telling him stories. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Judith L. Kelly; one son and daughter-in-law, Chuck and Dawn Kelly; a special grandson, Spencer Kelly, all of Darlington; brother and sister-in-law, William 'Billy' and Mildred Kelly of Florence; a number of nieces, nephews and special friend, Diane Davis.

Mr. Kelly was preceded in death by a brother, Teddy Jean 'Blue' Kelly and sisters, Mildred Lambert, Marjorie Mahon and Kathryn Talbert.

Memorials are suggestd to McLeod Foundation, 800 E. Cheves Street, Suite 150; Post Office Box 100151, Florence, SC 29506 or to the charity of one's choice.

ANNIE H. ATKINSON
LAMAR - Funeral services for Annie Harrington Atkinson, 82, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 7, 2006, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home, Lamar with interment following in Wells cemetery in Elliott.

Mrs. Atkinson was born in Lee County, daughter of the late Jessie Harrington and Mary Jane Ard Harrington. She was married to the late William E. Atkinson. She was a housewife, loved her family and was a charter member of the Pentecostal faith. She attended Christian Pathway Fellowship in Lamar.

Surviving are three sons, Leonard Atkinson of Lynchburg, Carlton (Shelby) Atkinson of Timmonsville, and Kent (Melinda) Atkinson of Cheraw; four daughters, Anna (Russell) Galloway, Kathy (Ted) Windham and Nina Atkinson, all of Lamar, and Janie (Buddy) Odom of Cassett; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Atkinson was preceded in death by three sisters, Carrie Bell Nesbitt, Bertha Nesbitt and Nelia Nesbitt.
