Graveside services for Richard Henry Wadsworth, 87, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2006, at Magnolia cemetery. The Rev. Ryan Goodroe officiated, with Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home in charge. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 104 E. Home Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550; American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia; SC 29210; Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 6931 Arlington Rd., Bethesda, MD 20814.

Mr. Wadsworth, widower of Letha Mae Alford Wadsworth, died Sunday, Aug. 27. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of the late Carl and Ethel Lee Wadsworth. He was a member and a descendent of a charter member of the First Baptist Church. Mr. Wadsworth was retired from B. C. Moore & Sons with 38 years of service and was the assistant manger for many years. He enjoyed farming and fishing.

Surviving are his daughters and son-in-law, Becky Walker of Durham, N.C., Patricia and George McCoy of McBee, Donna and Tommy Johnson of Lamar; sister, Margaret Galloway of Columbia; grandchildren, Katherine Brooks, Christopher McCoy, Kimberly McCoy; great-grandchildren, Eliza Brooks, Jake Brooks.

He was preceded in death by his son, Ricky Wadsworth, and grandson, Jim Walker.

ROSA LEE ROSS
Funeral services for Rosa Lee Ross, 82, were held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2006, at Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial followed services in Lawson Grove Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.

Mrs. Ross, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, in Memphis, Tenn., after an illness. She was born in Bamberg, a daughter of the late Isaiah and Sally Simmons Thompson. She received her education in the public schools in the area and was a member of St. Mark Holiness Church.

Surviving are one son, Johnny Lee Thompson of Hartsville; several stepchildren; four grandchildren, Chris Barlow of Memphis, Tenn., Romeshia Martin and Kendrick Martin, both of Lamar, and Lynn Benjamin of Darlington; three great-grandchildren, Montreal Benjamin, Sadeshia Benjamin and Dominique Cotton all of Darlington; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

SCARLETT ROWELL
Funeral services for Scarlett Elizabeth Rowell, 51, will be held Thursday, Aug. 31, 2006, at 2 p.m.at Fourth Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Jack Epperly officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be tonight, Aug. 30, from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Rowell, who died Aug. 26, was born in Hartsville, a daughter of J.C. Winburn and the late Betty Beasley Winburn. She was employed with Security Forces Inc. as a security guard.

Surviving are her husband, Travis Rowell, of Hartsville; father of McBee; daughter, Stacie Hopkins of Hartsville; sons, Michael and Brad Hopkins of Hartsville, and six grandchildren.

MASON B. SMITH
Funeral services for Mason Buster Smith, 30, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27, 2006, at Rivers of Living Water with the Rev. Tom Gainey officiating. Burial was in Flowers cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Smith died Thursday, Aug. 24. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of Elbert Wayne 'Buster' and Carolyn Cross Smith. He was a beloved son, brother, husband and father. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and the Clemson Tigers. He was generous and loved life and his family.

Surviving are his wife, Crystal Woods Smith of Hartsville; daughter, Macy Smith of Hartsville; son to be born Jan. 18, 2007, Mason Buster Smith Jr.; father and mother of Hartsville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Shannon and Gene Grimsley, Candy and Michael Kirshy, all of Florence; paternal grandmother, Carolyn Milsap of Cottageville; nieces, Logan Grimsley, Mackenzie Grimsley and Caroline Grimsley.

CORNEILA WALTON
JEFFERSON - Corneila Walton, 82, died Monday, Aug. 28, 2006, at her residence after an illness.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 598 Mack Jowers Lane, Jefferson.

WILLIAM J. GAINEY SR.
Graveside services for William Jennings Gainey Sr., 84, were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 27, 2006, in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mr. Gainey died Thursday, Aug. 24. He was born in Hartsville, a son of the late Issac and Fannie Skipper Gainey. He was retired from Sonoco Products Co., and a member of the Old Timers Club.

Surviving are his wife, Katie Dangerfield Gainey; sons, William J. Gainey Jr. and Ray L. Gainey; sisters, Louise Oneal, all of Hartsville, Dorothy Locklear of Norwood, N.C.; grandchild, William Chase Gainey of Hartsville.

BEULAH BAREFOOT
Funeral services for Beulah Dixon Barefoot, 68, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27, 2006, at Welsh Neck Baptist Church. The Rev. Mark Quigley will officiate with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Barefoot died Friday, Aug. 25. Born in Darlington, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Rennie Wilson Dixon. She was a member of Welsh Neck Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Kenneth Barefoot of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Sarajake Barefoot of Hartsville; daughters and son-in-law, Gloria S. and Jonathan K. O'Dell of Cheraw, Janelle Skinner of Hartsville; sisters, Louise Dixon of Darlington, Laura Shelton of Asheville, N.C.; brothers, Grover Dixon of Patrick, John Dixon of Hartsville; and five grandchildren.

MARY L. AISTROP
Funeral services for Mary Atlas Lassiter Aistrop, 50, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, 2006, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Randy Freeman will officiate with burial in Society Hill LDS cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight, Aug. 30, from 5 to 7 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Aistrop died Monday, Aug. 28. Born in Hartsville, she was a daughter of Margie Freeman Lassiter Smith and the late George Lassiter.

Surviving are her husband, James Aistrop of Hartsville; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Holly Aistrop, George and Julie Aistrop, Bobby and Carrie Aistrop, Matthew Aistrop, all of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and James Hopkins of Hartsville; mother and stepfather, Margie and Robert L. Smith of Austin, Texas; sisters and brothers-in-law, Carolyn Bryant of Hartsville, Cecil and Leslie Hamilton of Hartsville, Betty Sue and Ricky Lane of Dillon, Billie Joe Hamilton of Dillon; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Frieda Lassiter of Darlington, Todd and Georgia Smith of Austin, Texas; stepmother, Carolyn Lassiter Beam of Hartsville; stepdaughter, Robin Aistrop of Kannapolis, N.C.; and 13 grandchildren.

EDDIE THOMAS
Funeral services for Eddie Coker Thomas were held on Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2006, at 3 p.m. at Kingsville United Methodist Church. The burial followed in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc., with the Rev. James E. Moore, pastor of Kingsville, officiating.

Mr. Thomas was born June 10, 1925, in Darlington County, a son of the late George Marion and Fannie Morris Thomas. He was a member of Kingsville United Methodist Church. He loved all kinds of gospel music and sang on a quartet that was organized at Kingsville. Mr. Thomas worked at Nucor Steel as a crane operator for 23 years and retired from there in 1987. He loved baseball and was an avid supporter of the Lydia Red Sox. He was an umpire for a number of years as well. He had a passion for gardening and this hobby allowed him to grow all kinds of produce, much of which he lovingly gave to his friends and family. Two of his children, Jessie Mae Thomas Hall and Ivory Thomas Jackson preceded him in death.

Those who survive him and continue to cherish his legacy include six daughters, Sandra Thomas Lucas of Lamar, Rosa Lee (Melvin) Gerald of Darlington, Debra Thomas of Charlotte, N.C., Janie Thomas, Veronica Thomas and Carolyn Thomas all of Hartsville; three sons, the Rev. Eddie (Corine) Thomas Jr. of Bishopville, Frank (Barbara) Thomas and Joseph (Diane) Thomas of Meriden, Conn., his stepchildren, Shirley Reed, Bernetha Reed and Amanda Adams, all of Hartsville, Ulysses Adams of Henderson, N.C., and Henry Reed of Meriden, Conn.;19 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and many other relatives and very dear friends.

MILDRED JACKSON
PACOIMA, Calif. - Mildred Jackson, formerly of Hartsville, died on Aug. 24, 2006, in a Pacoima hospital after an illness. She was the sister of Scottie Jackson and was reared by Lula Graham and the late Mattie Jackson. Services were held on Thursday, Aug. 31, at Calvary Baptist Church in Pacoima beginning at 11 a.m. Local arrangements were handled by Hines Funeral Home Inc.

CORNELIA WALTON
JEFFERSON - Funeral services for Cornelia Walton, 92, were held 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, 2006, at Mt. Elon United Methodist Church in Jefferson. Burial followed services in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Walton died Monday, Aug. 28, at her residence. She was born in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Mack and Carrie Pate Jowers. She received her education in the public schools and was a graduate of Shannon High School. She attended Benedict College and received her bachelor's degree in education.

She was a member of the Mt. Elon United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, the NAACP and Chesterfield County Retired Education Association.

Surviving are two daughters, Braber W. (Michael) Spell of Jefferson and Fatima W. (Sidney) Wright of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister, Doretha J. Blakeney of Pageland; four grandchildren and a host of other close relatives and friends.

SALLY JUNE
Funeral services for Sally June, 91, were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, 2006, at Jerusalem Baptist Church. Burial followed services in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. June died Saturday, Aug. 26, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Luscious and Julia Harrington Peterson. She received her education in the public schools in the area and graduated from Butler High School. She was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church and the Easter Star Chapter 233.

Surviving are her son, Toby June of Hartsville; two sisters, Catherine (Julian) Snype of Charleston and Eva Wright of New York, N.Y.; several grandchildren and a host of close relatives and friends.

PEARL BREWER
Funeral services for Pearl Brewer, 74, will be Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006, at Wesley United Temple Holiness Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Brewer died Tuesday Aug. 29, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Jose' Boyd and Pearl Chambers McIver Boyd. She received her education in the public schools in the area and was a member of Wesley Temple Holiness Church. She served as mother of the church and kitchen committee chairman.

Surviving are her husband, Amos Brewer Sr. of Hartsville; two sons, Amos (Joye) Brewer Jr. of West Hempstead, N.Y., and Tristan Parrott of Hartsville; six sisters, Lizzie Johnson of Norfolk, Va., Rena McIver of Pemberton, N.J., Gerturde Rogers, Marie Ruth, Fannie (Perry) Simon and Ruth Johnson, all of Darlington; six sisters-in-law, Zealouise (Theodore) Hough, Amanda Brewer and Portia Brewer all of Hartsville, Susie (Maxie) Robinson of Philadelphia, Pa., Laura (Leslie) O'Neal of Winston Salem, N.C., Juliette (the Rev. Timothy) Lunn of Baltimore, Md.; a special niece, Marcella Parrott of Darlington; adopted children, Mr. and Dr. Lance Watson of Hartsville; a special son, Lamias Muldrow of Darlington; a close cousin, Gladys (the Rev. Mac) Hines of Florence; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and a host of other close relatives and friends.

REV. WADE H. GODFREY
NINETY-SIX - Funeral services for Rev. Wade H. Godfrey Jr., 83, will be held today at 2 p.m. from the First Baptist Church of Ninety Six. The Rev. Chuck Sprouse and the Rev. Tom Cartledge will officiate. Burial will be in the Parksville Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home of Hartsville. The casket will be placed in the church at 12:00 noon and a visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service.

Rev. Godfrey died Sept. 3. He was born in Rockingham, N.C. and reared in the Ware Shoals area. He married his best friend, Ruth Allen, in October of 1947. With Ruth by his side, he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Furman Univeristy and his Bachelor of Divinity degree from Southwestern Theological Seminary in 1957. Along the way and in the next few years, he and Ruth had four daughters: Darlene, Christy, Ann and Tina. He began his career in ministry in South Carolina and pastored many churches there including McClellanville, Marion and Ruffin Baptist Church in Charleston County, Antioch Baptist Church in Hartsville, Eastside Baptist Church in McColl, Parksville Baptist Church in Parksville, where he retired in 1985. He went on to pastor Harris Creek Baptist Church in Society Hill, after he retired. He and Ruth moved to Ninety Six in July 1997 and enjoyed an active life in their church doing what they had always done, ministering to others and sharing the news of Christ.

Survivors include his wife: Ruth Allen Godfrey, Ninety Six, three daughters: Darlene (Devon) Byrd, Society Hill; Ann Godfrey, Trenton; and Tina (Tommy) Simmons, Ninety Six. He was preceded in death by a daughter. Christy. Wade and Ruth reared their granddaughter LeAnne Godfrey Stockman, Ninety Six. Also surviving are ten other grandchildren: Michelle, Troy, April, Brook, Angela, Whitney, Cary, Tiffany, Michelle and Zach; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Sara Smith, Hartwell, Ga. and Alice Collins, Ware Shoals; sister-in -law, Naomi Godfrey, Ware Shoals, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins throughout the Carolinas.
