JACK GALLOWAY
Graveside services for John Malachi 'Jack' Galloway Jr., 84, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006, at Magnolia cemetery. The Rev. Danny Holley officiated, and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home was in charge.

Mr. Galloway, widower of Ethel Gainey Galloway and Betty Moody Galloway, died Saturday, Sept. 16. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of the late John Malachi and Alma Snipes Galloway Sr.

Surviving are his daughters and son-in-law, Pamela and Lee Amerson, Angela Galloway, all of Hartsville.

GEORGE C. WILD
COLUMBIA - Funeral services for George C. Wild, 83, were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006, at Woodfield Park Baptist Church with the Rev. Brian McKillop officiating. Interment with full military honors followed at Greenlawn Memorial Park, directed by Greenlawn Funeral Home of Columbia. Memorials may be sent to the Woodfield Park Baptist Church Building Fund. Mr. Wild passed away Saturday, Sept. 16, at Lexington Medical Center. He was born on Nov. 16, 1922, in Trenton, N.J., to the late John and Elizabeth Wild. He was a member of the Woodfield Park Baptist Church and a Mason. Mr .Wild retired from the United States Army after 20 years of active service, serving in both World War II and Korea. He then went to work for Dupont Corp. and retired from there. Mr. Wild married Annie Parnell on Nov. 4, 1956, and has been happily married for more than 49 years.

He is survived by his loving wife, Annie Wild of Columbia; one daughter, Virginia D. Rhodes of Hartsville; two sons, Jim Darnell and Boyd Darnell, both of Hartsville; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren and one special niece, Daisey Misale of Columbia.

MYRTLE DIXON
Funeral services for Myrtle Linton Dixon, 81, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, 2006, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Gary Compton and Ed Griggs officiated, with burial in Wilkes Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery.

Mrs. Dixon, widow of Robert Dixon, died Thursday, Sept. 14. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late Charles William and Bertha Dixon Linton. She attended Hebron United Methodist Church and was retired from Stanley Tools. She was a neighborhood mother and grandmother and was loved by everyone.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby Lett of Silver Spring, Md., Joel and Delores Lett of Patrick, Bruce and Susan Lett of Archdale, N.C., Ken and Phyllis Dixon and Donnie and Vickie Dixon, all of Hartsville, Terry and Deborah Dixon of Concord, N.C.; daughters and son-in-law, Betty Sue Freeman, Penny and Donnie Mangum, all of Hartsville; sisters, Iona Mae Linton of McBee, Frances Oleta Hoffman of Albermarle, N.C., Alma Ellen Kelly of Kannapolis, N.C.; brother, Carroll Eugene Linton of Kannapolis, N.C.; 24 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her son, Charlie Dixon, and her daughter, Clarice Dixon.

MAE E. WILKES
Funeral services for Mae Etter Warren Wilkes, 89, were held at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18, 2006, at Wilkes Chapel United Methodist Church. The Revs. Ronnie Caulder, Larry Melton, and Matt Rucker officiated with burial in Wilkes Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Wilkes, widow of Jesse Malone Wilkes, died Friday, Sept. 15. Born in Kershaw County, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence and Florence Douglass Warren. She was a member of Wilkes Chapel United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Jessie 'Boker' and Lou Ann Wilkes Jr. of Hartsville, James 'Tot' and Charlotte Wilkes of Hartsville, Gene and Deena Wilkes of McBee, Jerry and Abigail Wilkes, and Lawrence 'Pete' and Buffy Wilkes, all of Hartsville; daughters and son-in-law, Mary Lou Hancock and Frances and Steve McKenzie, all of Hartsville; sister and brother-in-law, Rosie Lee and Paul Hostetler of Sumter; grandchildren, Jeannie Hause, Richard Hancock, Crystal Jordan, Joseph Andrew 'Andy' Hancock, Chris Wilkes, Stevie McKenzie, Jeffrey Wilkes, Jamie Wilkes, Heather Howell, Joy Booher, Pamela Dawn Wilkes, Dan Wilkes, Preston Wilkes; great-grandchildren, Josh Wilkes, Kaley Wilkes, Courtney Wilkes, Celeste Wilkes, Makayla Booher, Braxton Wilkes, Noah Hause.

CHARLES RIVERS
Graveside services for Charles Rivers, 68, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Sept. 20, 2006, in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mr. Rivers died Sept. 17. He was born in Hartsville, a son of the late Ross and Mary Davidson Rivers. He was a member of North Hartsville Baptist Church. Surviving are his sister, Christine Brooks of Hartsville; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Ernest, Lorraine and Kenny.

MARVIN D. HULSEY
Funeral services for Marvin D. Hulsey, 69, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006, at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Ryan Goodrow will officiate. Burial will be in Darlington Memory Gardens with Masonic Rites, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be tonight, Sept. 20, from 5 to 7 at the funeral home.

Mr. Hulsey, who died Sept. 19, was born in Hartsville, a son of the late James C. Hulsey Sr. and Cora Belle Perdue Hulsey. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Hartsville Masonic Lodge, retired from Sonoco Products Co. after 39 years of service and a member of the Old Timers Club.

Surviving are his wife, Linda Woodberry Hulsey of Hartsville; sons, Keith (Kim) Hulsey Sr., Joey (Claudette) Hulsey, Chad (Crystal) Hulsey, all of Hartsville; seven grandchildren, Misty Howell, Heather Berdeau, Brandy Hulsey, Stefanie Lamoy, Keith Hulsey Jr., Anderson Hulsey, Georgianna Hulsey; two great-grandchildren, Gracie and Connor Berdeau.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 104 E. Home Ave. Hartsville, S.C. 29550.

EPHROM E. WATKINS
Funeral services for the Rev. Ephrom E. Watkins, age 87, who died Sept. 17, were held Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006, at 10 a.m. the Church of God of Prophecy with the Rev. Jimmy Ray Jeffords officiating. Burial will be in Darlington Memory Gardens directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mr. Watkins was born in Lee County, a son of the late Oran and Birlie Watkins. He was a retired Church of God of Prophecy Minister, and also retired from Roller Bearing Co. Surviving are daughters, Paulette Darnell, Lorna Mae Johnson of Hartsville; sons, Ethen Watkins of Lugoff, William and Jennings Watkins of Hartsville; 25 grandchildren; 60 great- and several great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Dority Watkins.

DOROTHY ELLEFSON
Funeral services for Dorothy M. Ellefson, 66, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24, 2006, at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church. The Rev. Ruben Olawsky officiated, and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home was in charge. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association Memorials, Box 5216, Glen Allen, Va., 23058 or Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1410 W. BoBo Newsome Hwy., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Ellefson, widow of Winston E. Ellefson, died Wednesday Sept. 20. Born in Des Moines, Iowa, she was a daughter of the late Theodor and Edith Sorenson Jensen. She was an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Rockford, Ill., and Our Shepherd Lutheran Church in Hartsville. She was a graduate of St. Olaf College of Northfield, Minn., with a bachelor's degree in nursing. She enjoyed family and friends, had a passion for politics, puzzles and reading. Her friends admired her witty insights and contributions in her Sunday school class. Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Rebecca Ellefson of Langley Air Force Base, Va., Chuck and Elisabeth Ellefson of Camden-Wyoming, Del.; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Rodney Hopkins. Cindy and Curt Griggs, all of Hartsville, Chris and Chuck Kneisley of Columbia, Carol and Dale DeRemer of Cuyhoga Falls, Ohio, Cathy and Dave Wirtenan of Stillwater, Minn.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth and Ken Lukawski of Byron, Ill., Eleanor and Bill Gensler of Davis Junction, Ill.; 18 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Martha Lubich, and her grandson, Martin Kneisley.

LINDA McNEW
A memorial service for Linda P Simer McNew, 69, of Hartsville, will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006, at St. Luke's United Methodist Church. The family suggests memorials to St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 302 Dunlap Drive, Hartsville, SC 29550 or the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210-1790. Cain Funeral Home of Florence is assisting with local arrangements. A funeral service for Mrs. McNew was held at 1 p.m., Monday, Sept. 25, in Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel of Berry Funeral Home in Knoxville, Tenn. The committal followed in Lynnhurst cemetery, with services conducted by the Rev. Ben Kinney. -

Mrs. McNew, wife of Jack Terry McNew, died Thursday, Sept. 21, in McLeod Regional Medical Center. She was born May 1, 1937, in Widen, W. Va., to the late Orville and Hazel Doris Young P Simer. -

Among her survivors, in addition to her husband, are daughters, Teri Coleman of Florence and Robin (David) Garrison of Tampa, Fla.; grandchildren, Cortney and Stephanie Coleman and Kayla, Jamie and Cory Garrison; nine surviving brothers and sisters; several nieces and nephews.

W.W. 'DILLIE' PLUMMER
Funeral services for W.W. 'Dillie' Plummer, 93, were held Sunday, Sept. 24, 2006, at 3 p.m. in Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, with interment following in Lamar Memorial cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Plummer died Friday, Sept. 22, in a local hospice facility. He was born in Darlington County, son of the late Toland 'Moot' and Nellie Bass Plummer. He was a farmer in the Oates Community and a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Sammie Louise Morrell Plummer of the home; four sons and daughters-in-law, George 'Robin' and Patsy Plummer of Timmonsville, Sammie 'Joe' and Amy Plummer of Hartsville, Charlie Toland and Linda Plummer of Gastonia, N.C., Billy Pierce and Sylvia Plummer of Hartsville; two daughters and a son-in-law, Linda P. and Robert Stone of Vera Beach, Fla., and Polly Plummer of Charlotte, N.C.; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two brothers, T.P. Plummer of Florence and Jesse (Dorothy) Plummer of Lamar; and a sister, Mary Alice (Ray) Sevarance of Darlington.

Mr. Plummer was preceded in death by a son, Jeff Plummer, a granddaughter, Tammy Saleeby and a brother, L.L. 'Dick' Plummer.

LUKE SPARROW
Graveside services for Lucas 'Luke' Lide Sparrow, 96, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Sept. 27, 2006, at Magnolia cemetery. The Rev. Ryan Goodroe will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 104 E. Home Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550 or Hartsville Interfaith Ministries, 210 Swift Creek Road, Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mr. Sparrow died Monday, Sept. 25. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of the late Jessie Calhoun and Fannie Andrews Sparrow. He attended Furman University during the depression and was employed for 42 years in the Cone Department at Sonoco. He began work there in 1932 when a paper cone machine was being developed and perfected for the growing textile industry in South Carolina and beyond. He loved his work and had a special enthusiasm for training new employees, many of whom became devoted friends.

He served as president of the Red Fox Club in 1956, the year they purchased the first bus for the Red Fox teams to ride to out of town games. He was a charter member of the first Board of Directors of the Sonoco Credit Union, now SPC Credit Union, and the last surviving charter member. He served in the Big Brother Program and taught many young boys to fish on Prestwood Lake. He was a lifelong member of the Sonoco Old Timers Club. Known fondly as 'Mr. Luke, ' he was a super Red Fox fan, a proud supporter of all the athletic programs, believing they instilled character in our youth. He was an ambassador for Hartsville and very proud of the All American City award. He never went anywhere without introducing himself as 'Luke Sparrow from a little town called Hartsville.'

Surviving are his daughter, Rebecca Grant Sparrow of Pawleys Island; nieces, Betty Jean Fahed of Richmond, Va., Jack King, Kaye MacDonald, Betty Ann McAlpine, Carole Sparrow, all of Hartsville, Frances Newman of Hamlet, N.C., Dorothy Mugele of Rock Hill; nephews, John McNeil of Red Springs, N.C., Raymond Sparrow of Hartsville; special great-niece, Jean Grant Salley, husband Henry and daughter, Chandler of Lexington; special great-nephew, Charles Matthew Grant, wife Terri, and daughter, Kelsey of Anderson. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Martha Grant Sparrow; sisters, Mamie Sparrow Flowers, Eula Sparrow McKinnon, and Irene Sparrow McNeil; brothers, Boyd Sparrow, Ellie Sparrow and Raymond Sparrow.

PATRICIA ANN SPIRES
FLORENCE - A graveside service for Patricia Ann S. Spires, 63, was held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 25, 2006, in Darlington County Memorial Gardens, officiated by the Rev. Ted Windham and directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Spires was born in Columbia, daughter of the late Mary Lillian Mitchum Reagan. She was a devoted wife and a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed the company of her grandchildren very much. She had attended Victory Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, John L. Spires Jr.; two sons, John L. Spires III and Ty Spires; two daughters, Teresa Yarborough and Michelle Spires; a daughter-in-law, Mary Spires; a son-in-law, Michael Yarborough, all of Florence; seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild; and a sister, Gail Weed of Florida.

WALT ABBOTT III
DARLINGTON - Funeral services for George Walter 'Walt' Abbott III, 40, were held at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 25, 2006, at First Baptist Church with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Abbott was born in Darlington County, son of George W. and Joyce Chappell Abbott. A graduate of Francis Marion University, he was a local businessman and proprietor of the Pink Flamingo. Mr. Abbott was devoted to his family and was a member of First Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to his parents of Darlington, are his wife, Tammy Walker Abbott; daughter, Maggie Walker Abbott; sister and brother-in-law, Suzan A. and Harry B. Pigford, all of Darlington, and three nephews, William Preston 'P.J.' James Jr., John Abbott 'Jake' James and Marshall Douglas Pigford.

Memorials are suggest to First Baptist Church Building Fund, PO Box 297, Darlington, SC 29540.

HATTIE INGS
Funeral services for Hattie Mae Ings, 75, were 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006, at Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial followed services in New Hope United Methodist Church cemetery in McBee, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.

Mrs. Ings, died Friday, Sept. 15, in a New York hospital. She was born in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Robert and Beatrice Cosom. She received her education in the public schools in the area. After migrating to New York, Mrs. Ings was a member of local church in the area.

Surviving are two daughters, Rita Ann Blakeney of Hartsville, and Lola Mae Blakeney of Bronx, N.Y.; one son, Ernest Blakeney of Hartsville; three sisters, Gerthenia Ings and Sarah Bess, both of Hartsville, and Mary L. Brown of Jersey City, N.J.; four brothers, John Ings of Hartsville, Lonnie Ings of Queens, N.Y., Bobby Ings of New Brunswick, N.J., and Billy Ings of Suitland, Md.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

MARY YARBOROUGH
BETHUNE - Graveside services for Mary Gainey Yarborough, 74, will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006, at Magnolia cemetery. The Rev. Margaret Hicks will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends Friday, Sept. 29, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Yarborough died Wednesday, Sept. 27. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late Sebe and Roxie Gainey Gainey.

Surviving are her daughter and fiance', Linda Daphine Gainey and James Spradley of Bethune; sisters and brother-in-law, Mazel Atkinson of Hartsville, Diane and John McWhorter of Hartsville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Daythurn and Louise Gainey of Hartsville, Ray and Libby Gainey of Bishopville; stepsons, Lee Yarborough of Sumter, Billy Yarborough of Kansas; stepdaughter, Sherry Barker of Great Falls; grandchildren (spouse), Tammy (Martin) Lopez, Kelly Clark Jr., Benji (Christy) Gainey; special nephew, Michael Gainey; special great-nephews, Conner McWhorter, Cameron McWhorter; three great-grandchildren and four stepgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Myrton Gainey and J. Buck Gainey, and sister, Myrtle Branham.
