FRANCES E. GAINEY
Graveside services for Frances Elizabeth Gainey, 82, were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006, in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Gainey, who died Friday, Oct. 13, was born in Hartsville, the daughter of the late Theodore Gainey Sr. and Lizzie Elizabeth Howle Gainey. She enjoyed baking, yard work and caring for those she loved. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Surviving are a daughter, Frances Sue King of Hartsville; a brother, Theodore 'Pedro' (Ann) Gainey Jr. of Hartsville; grandchildren, Crystal (Wayne) Alexander, Sharon Autry of Hartsville; great-grandchild, Michelle (Jeff) Kissiah; great -great-grandchildren, Lizzie and Katie Kissiah. She was preceded in death by sister, Lannie Mae Williams; brother, Weldon C. Gainey; grandson, Harold King Jr.; great-great-grandchild, Olivia Frances Kissiah.

Memorials may be made to Cornerstone Baptist Church, 213 N. Marquis Hwy., Hartsville, SC 29550.

HELEN CAMPBELL
Helen Campbell, 73, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006, at McLeod Hospice House after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 1621 Soloman Dr., Hartsville.

JEREMIAH LEWIS
Funeral services for Jeremiah Lewis, 92, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006, at Harold L. Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Florence National Ceme-tery, Monday, Oct. 23, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home. Mr. Lewis died Saturday, Oct. 14, after an illness. He was born in Lee County, a son of the late Rev. Jerry and Dela Hannibal Lewis. He received his education in the public schools in the area and was a member of Bennettsville Baptist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Mable Delane Harris of Hartsville and Peaches Lewis of Philadelphia, Pa.; two sons, Harvey Lewis and Spunk Lewis, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; two nieces, Mary Way of Bishopville and Almetta Scott of Columbia; three nephews, Eugene Bishop of Eastover, David Frazier of Philadelphia, Pa., and Johnny Frazier of Bishopville; six grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 34 great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

CURTIS LEE GOODWIN
CHESTERFIELD - Funeral services for Curtis Lee Goodwin, 77, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Oct. 20, 2006, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in Oakland Baptist Church cemetery. Mr. Goodwin was born in Dade County, Fla., a son of the late Henry Frank and Lillie Virginia Hilliard Goodwin. He was a retired employee of Burlington Industries. Mr. Goodwin was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, and was married to the late Margie Rae Rhynes Goodwin. Survivors include two sons, Curtis L. (Cindy) Goodwin Jr. and Tim Goodwin of Cheraw; three grandchildren, Callie Goodwin, Shelton Goodwin and Aspen Goodwin; two brothers, Frank 'H.J.' (Shirley) Goodwin of Hampton, Va., and Harold (Barbara) Goodwin of Purvis, Miss.; and two sisters, Vera (Doug) Kimrey of Cheraw and Blanche Allen of Hartsville.

JENNINGS SMITH
Celebration of life services for Jennings L. 'Mr. Red Fox' Smith, 53, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, 2006, at the Hartsville High School Gymnasium. The Revs. Steve Winburn, B. J. Smith and Hazel Mixon officiated. Burial was held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 23, in the New Market United Methodist Church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Jennings Smith Wall of Fame, c/o Hartsville High School, 701 Lewellyn Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550 or to Helping Hands Hospice, 202 S. Second St., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mr. Smith died Friday, Oct. 20. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late John Wesley and Beler Mae Wallace Smith. He graduated from Hartsville High School in 1971, graduating in the top 10 percent of his class. He was a member of the National Honor Society, was an honorary member of the Red Fox Club and a member of P.A.L.S. (People Always Lending Support) for 14 years, serving as their assistant director for the past three years. He played church basketball and church softball. He coached t-ball and basketball and worked with the American Legion Baseball program for 34 years. He was a statistician for Hartsville High School Athletics for 30 years and Hartsville Middle School Athletics for 27 years. He was the sports writer for Darco News and Buyers Guide, the High School Sports Report, and the sports show on WSDC radio. He was awarded several accolades including: the Jaycees' 'Hartsville's Most Outstanding Young American' in 1985, the 'High School Sports Report Fan of the Year' in 1988, and Relay for Life's 'Sexiest Legs in Darlington County' for the past two years. He tutored many students, touched the lives of more than 18, 000 athletes, attended more than 8, 000 ballgames. He will be missed by all.

Surviving are his brothers and sister-in-laws, James and Betty Smith of Lamar, John Henry and Hattie Smith of McBee, Charles and LaVonde Smith of Murrells Inlet; sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret Morrell, Jeanette and Ray Winburn, Patricia and Roy Flowers, all of Hartsville; adopted brothers and sister-in-law, Thomas and April Sellers, Jack O'neal; godchild, Jennings Rufznak; numerous nieces and nephews; special friend, Judy 'Mama Judy' Lyles.

RICHARD BOATWRIGHT
Funeral services for Richard Liggett Boatwright, 67, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 23, 2006, at the Hartsville Calvary Church of the Nazarene. The Revs. Bob Morris and John Griggs officiated, with burial in Piney Plains Free Will Baptist Church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Hartsville Calvary Church of the Nazarene.

Mr. Boatwright died Friday, Oct. 20. Born in Kershaw County, he was a son of Blanche Oakley Boatwright Laundreaux and the late Ira Bill Boatwright. He was a charter member of Hartsville Calvary Church of the Nazarene. He served in the U. S. Marines Corps and the U. S. Army and was retired from the S.C. National Guard. Mr. Boatwright was also retired from Ina Bearing and the civil service at the Hartsville OMS Shop. He was a current and past commander of the DAV #47 and a member of the Woodmen of the World.

Surviving are his wife, Bonnie 'Cookie' Skipper Boatwright of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, Robert 'Peanut' and Lori McElroy of Hartsville; mother of Hartsville; sisters and brother-in-law, Margaret and Roland O'Neal of Hartsville, Brenda Hodge of Cheraw; brother, C. R. Boatwright of Hartsville; grandchildren, Kimberly McElroy and Eric McElroy.

ROBERT ASHLEY JR.
Funeral services for Robert Allen Ashley Jr. age 32, were held on Sunday, Oct. 22, 2006, at 3 p.m. at McDonald's Chapel Church, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mr. Ashley was born in Ohio, a son of Robert A. Ashley Sr. and Darlene Whiteman McCaskill.

Surviving are his father of Akron, Ohio; mother of McBee; daughters, Hannah and Brooke Ashley of Oak Hill, W.Va.; brothers, Troy Ashley of Kershaw, David McCaskill of McBee; maternal grandparents, Sonny Ashley, Patricia Brake of Springfield, Ohio; and special friend, Crystal Kelly of Hartsville.

CHRISTOPHER CONTE
Christopher Lee Conte, 24, died Monday, Oct. 23, 2006. The family will receive friends Thursday, Oct. 26, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Funeral plans will be announced later.

PEGGY GRAHAM
Graveside services for Margaret 'Peggy' Scollard Graham, 84, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2006, at Magnolia cemetery. The Rev. Ryan Goodroe officiated and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends following the service.

Mrs. Graham, widow of James Graham, died Sunday, Oct. 22. Born in Minneapolis, Minn., she was a daughter of the late George Henry and Mary Cory Scollard.

Surviving are her sister, Virginia Swenddal of Hemet, CA; niece, Jane Truett of Hartsville; great nephews and niece, T. E. 'Stoney' Truett III, L. W. 'Chip' Truett, Theresa Truett. She was predeceased by a son, James Graham II.

HAROLD GRIGGS
Funeral services for Harold Griggs, 59, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2006, at Greater Heights Baptist Church. The Revs. Darwin Cook and Danny Holley officiated, with burial in Wilkes Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Helping Hands Hospice, 202 S. Second St., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mr. Griggs died Sunday, Oct. 22. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of Sara Hodges Griggs Lee and the late Russell Griggs. He attended Rivers of Living Waters Church. He was an avid fisherman and a wonderful father, son, husband, and grandfather. He was especially proud of his grandson.

Surviving are his wife, Wendy Griggs of Hartsville; son and fiancee', Harold Richard Griggs and Megan Gray; daughter and son-in-law, Barbie Griggs and Keith Wilkes, all of Hartsville; mother, of Scranton; sisters and brother-in-law, Faye Beatrice 'Bea' and Johnny Byrd of Hartsville, Gail Swann of Bremen, Ga.; grandson, Zachary Wilks; nieces, Jennifer Byrd, Amanda Byrd; nephew, Jason Byrd. He was preceded in death by his brother Cecil A. Griggs.

ROBERT EWING
A memorial service for Robert 'Bob' S. Ewing, 86, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, 2006, at Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church in Southern Pines, N.C., with Dr. Grandy Perryman officiating, directed by Boles Funeral Home of Southern Pines, N.C. The family will receive friends after the service in the church fellowship hall.

Mr. Ewing died Tuesday, Oct. 24, of complications following heart surgery at FirstHealth, Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst. He was a 55-year resident of Moore County. He was previously married to Ann Laurisen Mason from 1942 until her death in 1971, with whom he had six daughters.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Katherine Royster Ewing, formerly of Oxford, N.C.; children, Susan (Charles) Shabica of Winnetka, Ill., Fay Ewing of Highlands, N.C., Roberta (Edwin) Listerman of Richfield, N.C., Katherine 'Kit' (Edward) Mayor of Las Vegas, Nev., Marguerite 'Feeka' Ewing of Hartsville; Robert (Patti) Dellert of Greer, Katherine 'Katchy' (Stratton) Whitlow of Oxford, N.C., Jennifer (Stuart) Cameron of Apex, N.C.; grandchildren, Jonathan (Pamela) Shabica of Northfield, Ill., Andrew (Julie) Shabica of Cedarburg, Wis., Dana Shabica of Chicago, Ill., Elizabeth Dellert of London, England, Jesse Sandler of Las Vegas, Nev., Brian (Jennifer) Listerman of Nashville, Tenn., Adam (Robin) Listerman of Albermarle, N.C., Benjamin Listerman of Huntsville, Ala., Amy (Mike) Yirka and Dallas Rose Sandler, both of Baltimore, Md., Kelly Tighe of New York City, N.Y., Patrick Tighe of Greer, Thomas Whitlow and Taylor Whitlow both of Oxford, N.C., Duncan Cameron and McKenzie Cameron, both of Apex, N.C.; and four great-grandchildren.

BERNICE F. TEAL
PATRICK - Funeral services for Bernice Freeman Teal, 57, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, 2006, at Brown Springs Baptist Church. The Revs. Donnie Faulkenbury and Vernon Lewis will officiate with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends today, Oct. 25, from 5-7 p.m. at the residence. Memorials may be made to the American Kidney Fund, 6110 Executive Blvd. Suite 1010, Rockville MD 20852 or Brown Springs Baptist Church.

Mrs. Teal died Monday, Oct. 23. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late George W. and Myrtle Warren Freeman Sr.

Surviving are her husband of 41 years, Carl E. 'Buck' Teal of Patrick; son, Sandy Teal of Patrick; daughter, Sheila Stephens of Patrick; sisters, Daisy Brazell of Camden, Margie Smith of Austin, Texas; brothers, G. W. Freeman of Florence, Chuck Freeman of Santee, Ricky Freeman and Michael Freeman, both of Hartsville; grandsons, John Stephens, Donald Stephens, Allen Teal, Austin Teal. She was preceded in death by her brother, Ted Freeman; sisters, Frances Hall and EttaRee Hensley.

CHARLES A. WALKER
Charles A. Walker, 63, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 810 N. Mary Street, Hartsville.

LEON HICKMON
EL PASO, Texas - Leon Hickmon, 41, formerly of Hartsville, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006, in El Paso, Texas from injuries from an automobile accident. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.
