W.E. "Bill" Turner, Jr.
March 23, 2009

W.E. “Bill” Turner, Jr. 86, of 2022 Mower St., Newberry, died Monday, March 23, 2009 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
He was born on June 18, 1922 in Ninety Six, a son of the late W. E. Sr. and Ruth Osborne Turner. Mr. Turner was a Navy veteran of World War II and the past owner of W.E. Turner Jewelers of Newberry. He was an honorary member of the Newberry Fire Department where he was a volunteer for many years and was also a former member of the Smiling Swingers Square Dance Club. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Adelphian and Fellowship Sunday School class.
Mr. Turner was first married to the late Velma Parsons Turner for 48 years. He is survived by his current wife, Grace Yon Turner of Newberry; three sons and their wives, William E. III and Anna Melissa Turner of Laurens, David Len and Debbie P. Turner of Newberry and Robert Wayne Turner of Salisbury, NC; and a step-daughter and her husband, Susan H. and Ralph DeLoach of Waterloo, SC.
Visitation will be from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 A.M. Friday at First Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Harmon. Interment was in Rosemont Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were members of the Newberry Fire Department.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Benevolence Fund, 1020 Boundary St., Newberry, SC 29108.

Charles Branders "Bran" Shealy
March 20, 2009

Charles Branders “Bran” Shealy, 56, of 483 Country Club Rd., Newberry, died Friday, March 20, 2009 at his residence.
He was born on January 6, 1953 in Newberry, a son of the late L.B. “Dick” and Lib Shealy. He was a former employee of the Country Club of Newberry and Campbell Electric Service. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Country Club of Newberry Men’s Golf Association. Throughout his life, Bran helped with numerous benefit golf tournaments.
He is survived by a daughter, Beth Shealy of Tallahassee, FL; a son, Aaron Shealy of West Palm Beach, FL, a sister, Pat (Jimmy) Daniel of Dallas, GA; step-daughters, Amy & Stacie; grandchildren, Catie Colon, Kenneth Colon, Mathue Scott, Aaron Shealy, and April Shealy; nieces, Emma & Sarah Daniel; and numerous step-grandchildren. Bran is also survived by many beloved friends.
Visitation was from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Sunday at his residence, 483 Country Club Road, Newberry.
Funeral services were held at 6:30 PM Wednesday at the Country Club of Newberry Ballroom.
Memorials may be made to the Country Club of Newberry Men’s Golf Association, PO Box 246, Newberry, SC 29108 or to the Harmony Care Hospice, 100 Ashland Park, Columbia, SC 29210.

Mary Livingston Owens
March 16, 2009

Mary L. Owens of 11379 SC Highway 121, Newberry, widow of Chaplain Albert D. Owens died Monday, March 16, 2009 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Owens was born in Newberry on July 16, 1923 a daughter of the late Vernon J. Sr. and Lucille Buzhardt Livingston. She retired from the Newberry County Veterans Affairs Office. She was a member of Colony Lutheran Church where she was active in the Women of the ELCA and the Friendship Group. She was a former Sunday School teacher and Church Choir member. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Aleesa O. and Bill Vaughan of Newberry; a grandson, Johnathan L. Aull of Newberry; a great-grandson, Bryson L. Aull; and a sister, Patricia L. Harmon of Newberry.
Besides her husband, she was pre-deceased by a daughter, Faith Dewey Owens; brother, Vernon J. Livingston, Jr.; and a sister, Aline L. Wilson
Funeral services were conducted at 4:00 P.M. Wednesday at Colony Lutheran Church by the Rev. Jerry Trantham. Interment was in the Church Cemetery.
The family was at the residence, 11379 Highway 121, Newberry and did receive friends there Tuesday from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M.

Ruth Bouknight Wicker
March 14, 2009

Ruth Bouknight Wicker, 85, formerly of Main St., Newberry, widow of Claude Wicker, died Saturday, March 14, 2009 at White Oak Manor.
Mrs. Wicker was born on March 29, 1923 in Newberry County, a daughter of the late W. Floyd and Lucy Cromer Bouknight. She was the owner and operator of Rugayle’s Beauty Shop for over 30 years.
She was a member of O’Neal Street United Methodist Church where she had been a member of the Bernice Martin Sunday School Class, the church choir, the Administrative Council, the PPRC Committee and the Kathleen Dubose Circle where she had served as Circle Leader. Additionally she had served as the Flower Coordinator for the church. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 226 and a former member of the RSVP Singers.
She is survived by two sisters, Doris B. Wise of Newberry and Nedra B. Turner of Spartanburg; a brother, Rudolph Bouknight of Newberry. She was predeceased by a daughter, Gayle Wicker and two brothers, Carman Bouknight and Charles Bouknight
Funeral services were conducted 3:00 P.M. Monday at O’Neal St. United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dr. Steven Todd. Interment was in Rosemont Cemetery.
The family was at the residence of Rudolph Bouknight, 1408 Dave Dr., Newberry and did receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. Sunday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to O’Neal Street United Methodist Church, 501 O’Neal St., Newberry, SC 29108.
Active pallbearers were Ralph Bryan, Jr., Dick Harvey, Barry Wicker, Darryn Bouknight, Perry Threat and Lewis Lee.
Honoray pallbearers were members of the Bernice Martin Sunday School class, the RSVP Singers and the staff of White Oak Manor.

Margaret Harris
March 12, 2009

Weeta Margaret Harris, 93, formerly of 935 Jessica Ave., Newberry died Thursday, March 12, 2009 at Springfield Place.
Miss Harris was born in Laurens County on June 7, 1915 a daughter of the late Richard Gray and Erin Addison Harris. She was a graduate of Columbia College and taught for many years in the public schools of Easley and Newberry.
She was a member of O’Neal Street United Methodist Church and the Nan Layton Circle. She was also a member of the Newberry Literary Study Club.
She is survived by her sister, Josephine “Jo” Harris Layton of Newberry; three nieces, Linda Harris Brown Fancher and her husband Ted Raymond of Spartanburg, Susan Harris Grady of Greenville and Nancy Harris Abrams and her husband Dr. Edward Morris of Myrtle Beach; two great nieces and five great nephews; two great great nieces and three great great nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, William Pinckney Harris, sister-in-law, Emma Heriot Harris, brother-in-law, Olin Carlisle Layton and two nephews-in-law, Earl Brown and Jack Grady.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday at Whitaker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dr. Steven Todd. Entombment was in Cannon Memorial Park in Fountain Inn.
Visitation was from 4:00 to 5:00 P.M. Saturday at Whitaker Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to O’Neal Street United Methodist Church, 501 O’Neal St., Newberry, SC 29108.

Letha Williamson Brooks

Letha Williamson Brooks, 68, formerly of 3988 SC Highway 773, Pomaria, widow of William “Reggie” Brooks, died Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at the Lowman Home in White Rock, SC.
Mrs. Brooks was born on August 29, 1940 in Newberry County, a daughter of late S. Virgil and Fay Derrick Williamson. She was a retired broker/agent with Farmers Mutual Insurance Company and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Gena (Chris) Turner of Pomaria; a son, Joey (Melodi) Brooks of Little Mountain; a sister, Edith Casey of Taylors; four grandchildren, Hannah Brooks and Lylah Brooks of Little Mountain and Jeremy Turner and Jessie Turner of Pomaria. She was predeceased by a grandson, C.J. Turner.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 A.M. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church by the Rev. Brent Nichols. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Visitation was from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry.
Pallbearers were Henry Brooks, Jeff Brooks, Keith Weathington, Jeremy Turner, Bobby Casey, Ronnie Kinard, Jonathon Wedaman, and David Bowers.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Building Fund, 2496 S.C. Highway 773, Pomaria, SC 29126.

Eula Baker Stone, 94, widow of Perry C. Stone, died Thursday, April 23, 2009 at White Oak Manor.
Mrs. Stone was born on October 07, 1914, in Whitmire, to the late John Raymond and Eugenia Catherine Baker. She was retired from J.P. Stevens Company, Whitmire Plant. She was a member of Whitmire Presbyterian Church where she was a member of the Willie Miller Sunday School Class.
Mrs. Stone is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Ordie Campbell, Linda and Jimmy Lominick all of Whitmire, and Judy Epting of Newberry; eight grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Willene Stone of Whitmire; two sisters-in-law, Bernice Rivers and Mary Rivers, both of Columbia, and a special cousin, Frances McCullough of Jalapa. She was predeceased by her son, Claude Stone; sister, Lucy Rivers Price; brothers, James O. Rivers and Henry P. Rivers; stepmothers, Lizzie Rivers Baker and Moza Lee Baker; son-in-law, Bob Epting.
Visitation was Saturday from 4:00 to 5:00 P.M. at Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry.
Funeral services were conducted at 3:30 P.M. Sunday at Whitmire Presbyterian Church at the Rev. Marion Boozer. Interment were in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to Whitmire Presbyterian Church, 1509 S. Church St., Whitmire, SC, 29178.
Pallbearers were George Rivers, Dwayne Rivers, Edward Rivers, Harold Taylor, Yoder Bedenbaugh, and Johnny McLean.
