Beatrice Wicker Hedgepath
April 11, 2009

Beatrice Wicker Hedgepath, 95, widow of Henry Leslie Hedgepath, died Saturday, April 11, 2009 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
She was born on December 27, 1913 in Newberry County, a daughter of the late Thomas and Maude Wicker. She retired from Whitten Center and was part owner of H. L. Hedgepath & Son. She was a former member of St. Philips Lutheran Church and a member of Faith Lutheran Church since 2002.
Mrs. Hedgepath was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by two grandchildren, Tommy L. “Tony” Hedgepath, Jr. and wife Gina, and Renee Hedgepath Shipes, all of Newberry; a daughter-in-law, Shelby Hedgepath of Newberry; great-grandchildren, Tyler Shipes, Joshua Hedgepath, and Justin Hedgepath all of Newberry, and Kirby Shipes, and Kimmie Shipes both of Hawaii, and two great-great-grandchildren, Justin & Kelina Shipes. She was predeceased by her son, Tommy L. Hedgepath, Sr., three sisters, Amy Lee Summer, Sara A. Dennis, and Inez Rikard, and a brother, Thomas Wicker.
Funeral services were conducted at 4:30 PM Monday at Faith Lutheran Church by the Rev. Charles T. R. Aurand and Wayne Parker. Entombment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Sunday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Bobby Pollard, Johnny Dowd, Shealy Counts, Furman Porter, Mike Williams, Robert Dennis, III, and Melvin Dominick.
Memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church, 1505 Wilson Rd., Newberry, SC 29108.

William Keith "Bill" Hester
April 9, 2009

Mr. William Keith “Bill” Hester, age 50, husband of Jamie B. Hester passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in the evening of April 9th at his home on Lake Murray.
Bill was born in Columbia, the son of Nancy Snipes Hester and Theron E. “Herb” Hester, Jr. He attended the Irmo, SC area schools and Midlands Technical College. He was employed in the landscaping field and was an avocational horticulturist of note keeping his neighbors and friends supplied with his excellent tomatoes.
Surviving in addition to his wife is his son Drake, brother Terry, parents T.E. “Herb” Hester, Jr. of Columbia and Nancy Hester of Garden City Beach, SC, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and his faithful canine companion, Daisy.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, April 13 at 1:00 PM by the Rev. Randall Derrick at the Whitaker Funeral Home in Chapin, SC. Interment will be in Rosemont Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 11:30 to 12:30 Monday prior to the service at Whitaker Funeral Home, Chapin.
Pallbearers will be Randy Causey, Josh Causey, Glenn Causey, Sr., Rob Barkalow, John Keeler, Alan Mayo, and Billy Boswell.

Eleanor Wier Clarkson Paysinger
April 6, 2009

Eleanor Wier Clarkson Paysinger, 94, formerly of 1623 Clarkson Ave, wife of the late Strother Daniel (Bozo) Paysinger, died Sunday, April 5, 2009 in Wilmington, NC.
Mrs. Paysinger was born October 3, 1914 to the late Samuel Lawrence and Carrie Lee Buford Wier. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Newberry and the Kyra Sunday School Class; a long time member of the Calvin Crozier Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy where she held the office of corresponding secretary for many years. She was also a former member of the Board of Trustees for the Rosemont Cemetery Association.
She was a loving and caring mother who is survived by a daughter, Barbara Clarkson Smith of Wilmington, NC; a sister, Carolyn Hollis of Clinton, SC; a step-son, Alan Johnstone Paysinger of Newberry, SC; and three step-grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services were conducted at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday in Newberry Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Harmon.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 1020 Boundary St., Newberry, SC 29108.

Lewis E. Davis
April 5, 2009

Lewis E. Davis, 84, of 1223 Glenn St, died at his home Sunday, April 5, 2009. Mr. Davis was born on March 18, 1925 to the late T. Ben and Myrtle White Davis. He was an active member of Aveleigh Presbyterian Church for 58 years, was an Elder, and was closely involved with the Aveleigh Young Life for the last 16 years. He was awarded an Honorary Life Membership of the Women of the Church.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving on the USS Puget Sound in the Pacific Theater during WWII. Mr. Davis graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in Retailing and was a valued employee of B.C. Moore’s for 53 years. He was a member of the Chesterfield American Legion #74 and the Newberry Rotary Club, and served on the Board of Directors of the Living Water Foundation. Mr. Davis was the recipient of the Newberry Jaycees Outstanding Senior Citizen and the Rotary Layperson of the Year Award.
He enjoyed his gardening and it was a well known joy of his to share his produce with others.
He was a caring and unassuming gentleman who is survived by his wife of almost 63 years, Elizabeth F. Davis; daughters and their spouses, Leona and Gordon Query of Columbia, Louise and Calhoun Parr of Newberry; grandchildren, G. Stowe Query, Jr. and wife Carrie, Elaine Parr, and Leona Parr; a great-granddaughter, Sydney Query; sisters, Carolyn “Nookie” Goldsmith and Julia Macall; and a brother, Edwin “Brother” Davis. He was predeceased by siblings, Mary Pusser and T. Frank Davis.
Services were conducted at 3:30 P.M. Tuesday at Aveleigh Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Dr. Mitchell Van Metre. A private family burial was held prior to the service. The family did receive friends in Truesdell Hall following the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be made to Aveleigh Young Life, 1211 Calhoun St., Newberry, SC 29108.
Honorary pallbearers were the Elders of Aveleigh Presbyterian Church.

Henry Cephas "H.C." Smith
April 4, 2009

Henry Cephas “H.C.” Smith, 94, of 2148 Mower St., Newberry, beloved husband of Lauretha Price Smith, died at his home on Saturday, April 4, 2009.
Mr. Smith was born on March 26, 1915 in Lexington County, a son of the late Eugene Cullum and Annie Mae Hallman Smith. He was a graduate of Gilbert High School and was an Army veteran of World War II. He served in France and was a Purple Heart recipient. He retired from The New South Life Insurance Company in Columbia after 25 years.
H.C. was a man of extreme character and faith who loved his family and friends and lived a very fulfilling life.
He was an active member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer where he had served as Treasurer of the church, Secretary of the Sunday School for 28 years, was a member of Lutheran Men in Mission and the Men’s Bible Class and served several terms on the Church Council.
He has been honored for his community involvement having received the “Book of Golden Deeds” from the Exchange Club. He served on the Newberry Council on Aging and received an 8 year pin for delivery of Meals on Wheels twice a week He was a Life member of Amity Masonic Lodge # 87, a member of the Exchange Club for 32 years, American Legion for 50 years and a Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Surviving in addition to his wife of almost 72 years are two daughters and husbands, Sandra and Rodger Hawkins of Greer, S.C. and JoAnn and Bill Anderson of Mt. Pleasant, SC; one son and his wife, Gene and Linda Smith of Lexington, SC; eight grandchildren, Brad Hawkins, Lindsay (Kevin) Thalinger, Ryan Albers, Reagan (Neil) Ferguson, Presley (Jason) Painter, Lauren (Jimmy) Butts, Craig (Christine) Smith, and Paige (Kevin) Bobo; eight great grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Sue Smith Stover and a sister-in-law, Faye Smith. He was predeceased by his son, Robert “Bob” Smith and his brother, Edward E. Smith, Sr.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer by Rev. Caldwell Day. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens
The family did receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 P.M. Monday at Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry.
Active pallbearers were Brad Hawkins, Ryan Albers, Lloyd Layman, Johnny Sligh, Gene Berry, Craig Smith, Larry Senn, Robert Renwick and Bill Dehihns.
Honorary pallbearers were the Men’s Bible Class and Lutheran Men in Mission of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, the Mower St. Dinner Club, Lorex Personnel, C.D. and Emily Small, Jenny Moon, Paul Duncan, Marie Harmon, Ann Bedenbaugh, Frances Fallow, George and Donna Franklin, Ed and Betty Haltiwanger, Jerry and Harriet Haltiwanger, Vernetha Renwick and Dr. Thomas Bradberry.
Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, PO Box 382, Newberry, SC 29108.

Betty Ann Hentz Summer
April 2, 2009

Betty Ann Hentz Summer, 80, of 1105 Seminole Dr., West Columbia, widow of Richard E. Summer, died Thursday, April 2, 2009 at her residence.
She was born on August 18, 1928 in Pomaria to the late Hugh W. and Vera Kinard Hentz, Sr.
Mrs. Summer was retired from the SC Highway Department and was a member of Mt. Hermon Lutheran Church. She received her Associates degree from Newberry College, served as state treasurer for Business and Professional Women, and was a proud member of IPTAY for 50 years.
Mrs. Summer is survived by two brothers; Thad K. Hentz of Prosperity and W. Alvin Hentz of Ft. Payne, AL; and a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers; Robert L. “Bobby” Hentz, and Hugh W. Hentz, Jr.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 PM Monday at Mt. Hermon Lutheran Church, West Columbia by the Rev. W. Eric Friedrichs. Interment was at 4:00 PM at Pomaria Cemetery.
The family did receive friends from 5:00 to 6:30 PM Sunday at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry.

Evelyn Livingston Hendrix
April 2, 2009

Evelyn Livingston Hendrix, 91, of 2018 Charles St., Newberry, died Thursday, April 2, 2009 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
She was born on February 7, 1918 in Newberry to the late John P. and Eula Hiller Livingston. She was the retired owner of Hillcrest Florist.
Mrs. Hendrix was a member of Mayer Memorial Lutheran Church where she was an honorary life member of Women of the ELCA. She was a former member of the Church Choir and the Adult Women’s Sunday School Class and had also been a Nursery teacher.
Mrs. Hendrix is survived by her husband of 70 years, J. Harold Hendrix, Sr.; a daughter and her husband, Harriett H. and William L. “Bubba” Easler of Lexington; a son and his wife, Hal and Peggy Hendrix of Newberry; and five grandchildren and their spouses, Jessica and Brandon Morris, Leah and Steven Fitts, Ashlee Hendrix, Kimberly Hendrix and Meagan Frick and great grandsons, Luke and Levi Morris. She was predeceased by a grandson, Jesse Ward Hendrix; sisters, Lottie Davis, Leona Morris, Ethel Stone and Frances Dickert; and brothers, Herman Livingston, Roy Livingston and Paris Livingston.
Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 P.M. Sunday at Mayer Memorial Lutheran Church by the Rev. Dr. Mary Havens and the Rev. Dr. Robert McCollum. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
The family did receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. Saturday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Mayer Memorial Lutheran Church, the General Fund, 1307 Drayton St., Newberry, SC 29108.
Active pallbearers were Brandon Morris, Steven Fitts, Mike Willingham, Jody Chaney, Kevin Kunkle, Thomas Shaver, Butch Price and David Chastain.
Honorary pallbearers were Angel Care of Newberry.
The family expresses a special thank you to Dr. Alan Paysinger, Angel Care of Newberry, Amedisys Home Health Care, and Hospice of South Carolina for their kindness.
