Bessie Truesdale

COLUMBIA — Service for Bessie Capilos Truesdale, 81, will be held Monday at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church with burial in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Sunday at 5 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with Trisagion Prayers at 6 p.m. Memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Building Fund, 1931 Sumter St., Columbia, SC 29201.

Mrs. Truesdale died Friday, January 7, 2005. Born in Charlotte, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Demosthenes Capilos and Barbara Harakas Capilos. Mrs. Truesdale retired from the University of South Carolina after eighteen years as box office manager of the Carolina Coliseum. She was an active member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church and St. Katherine’s Philoptochos Society.

Mrs. Truesdale was a loving mother, Yia Yia, sister and friend. May her memory be eternal.

Surviving are her husband of fifty-nine years, Philip A. Truesdale; sons and daughters-in-law, Philip D. and Valerie Truesdale of Columbia and John C. and Theodora Truesdale of Greenville; sisters, Marina Papadea and Tracy Cardone of Columbia; brother, John Capilos of Columbia; and grandchildren, Melanie McMinn, Stephen Truesdale, Anne Truesdale and David Truesdale. She was predeceased by brothers, Gus Capilos and Bill Capilos and a sister, Polly Retzky.

The family extends special thanks to Palmetto Health Hospice for their loving care.

Mary Zander

ROCK HILL — A memorial service for Mary Augusta Zander, 83, will be held at 2 p.m. today at Lutheran Chapel Church, Gastonia, where she was a member. Burial will be private. Greene Funeral Home, NW Chapel, is in charge. Born in Akron, Ohio, to Otto and Bertha Widmever Zander, she died January 6, 2005. Surviving are nephew, Bruce Zander; great nephews, Scott and Dennis Zander; other relatives.

Dayle Kiser

CAMDEN — Memorial services for Evelyn Dayle Kiser, 68, of Camden, will be held Monday, January 10, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Timothy Lutheran Church. Rev. Gary White will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following service in the Fellowship Hall. Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross Tsunami Relief Fund, P.O. Box 641, Camden, SC 29020. Kornegay Funeral Home Camden Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Kiser died Thursday, January 6, 2005. Born in Kannapolis, NC, she was the daughter of the late Thomas N. and Almeta Peele Aderhold. She was a member of St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church.

Surviving are her husband, James A. Kiser; 3 sons, Scot and Whitney of Annapolis, MD, Erik of Centerville, VA; sister, Barbara Gwyn of Pineville, NC; brother, Thomas N. Aderhold, Jr. of Raleigh, NC; 4 grandchildren, Aaron and McKinley Kiser, Christopher and Michael Wilkerson.

Helen Rivers

SOCIETY HILL — A graveside service for Helen Freeman Rivers, 62, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in Society Hill Latter-Day Saints Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Born in Darlington Co. to Everette Freeman and Ruby Wallace Edwards, she died Jan. 7, 2005. Surviving: siblings, Frances, Beulah, Nellie, Velma, Diane, Kenneth, Donnie, J.K., Clyde; 44 nieces and nephews; special friends.

Michael Adams

NEW YORK — Services for Michael Leroy Adams, 34, are 2 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Clair Missionary Baptist Church, burial in Poston Cemetery, Cades. Green’s Funeral Home, Lake City, is in charge. Born in Bridgeport, Conn., to Charles Adams and Queen Adams Shaw, he died Jan. 4, 2005. Surviving: mother; stepfather, Robert Shaw; brothers, Charles Jr., Sgt. Stephen, Maurice Adams; four uncles; four aunts; niece; others.

Broadus Beckett Sr.

COLUMBIA — Services with burial for Broadus Beckett Sr., 79, are 2 p.m. today at GoodHope Baptist Church. Garvin and Garvin Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Hampton Co. to Blake and Daisy Miles Beckett, he died Jan. 1, 2005. Surviving: children, Roberta Kidd, Catherine and Broadus Jr. Beckett, Peggy Gary, Janie Redenburg, Helen Green, 3 stepchildren; 1 sister; 1 brother; 24 grands; 21 great-grands; others.

John Baker

COLUMBIA — Services for John L. Baker will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 5 - 7 p.m. at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home of Newberry. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 2496 SC Highway 773, Pomaria, 29126.

Mr. Baker, 71, died January 7, 2005. Born in Rock Bridge, IL, he was a son of the late John C. and Mabel Cecil Goodall Baker. He was a retired truck driver, a member of the American Legion, a mason, and a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife , Betty Koon Baker, sons; Randal D. Baker of West Columbia, Wesley L. Baker of Ridgeway; sisters, Nadine Combs and Bertha Dean both of Carollton, IL; brothers, Hal D. Baker of Jacksonville, IL, and Francis Gene Baker of Carollton, IL, 5 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; he was predeceased by two sisters, a brother, and a grandchild.

Lemuel Briggman

ORANGEBURG — Services for Lemuel D. “Sonny” Briggman, 58, Army veteran, 1 p.m. today: Edisto Fork UM Church, burial: Belleville Memorial Gardens. Glover’s Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Cope to Lemuel and Doretha O’Bryant Briggman, he died Jan. 5, 2005. Surviving: wife, Jessie Bowman Briggman; children, Wydrede Myers, Lemetrius Briggman; mother; 4 grands; brother, Willie Briggman.

Alberta Bush

BLACKVILLE — Services for Alberta Johnson Bush, widow of Rev. Charlie Bush, will be held at 1 p.m. (viewing 11 a.m.) today at Macedonia Baptist Church. Lebby Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Blackville to Luther and Carrie Smalls Johnson, she died January 2, 2005. Surviving: sons, Charlie and Albert Bush; niece, Cleo Ballard; four grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; other relatives.

Nelson Chambers Sr.

WINNSBORO — Services for Nelson Chambers Sr., 82, will be 3 p.m. today at Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church, burial in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Russell-McCutchen Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Fairfield Co. to Robert and Mamie Chambers, he died Jan. 4, 2005. Surviving: wife, Annie Chambers; children, Nelson, Jr., Ernest, Robert, Milton, Paul, Lois, Heline, Ester and Eleanor; one brother; three sisters.

Sadie Davis

RIDGEWAY — A graveside service for Sadie E. Davis, 81, will be held at 1 p.m. today in Memorial Gardens of Columbia. Russell-McCutchen Funeral Home, Columbia, is in charge. Memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity, 209 S. Sumter St., Columbia SC 29201 or the charity of choice.

Preston Johnson Jr.

SUMTER — Services for Preston Johnson Jr., 88, retired farmer, will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at St. John Freewill Baptist Church (where he was a lifelong member), with burial in St. Matthews Cemetery. Fleming & Delaine Funeral Home, Manning, is in charge. Born to Preston Sr. and Lelia Johnson, he died January 5, 2005. Surviving: daughter, Edith Robinson; siblings, Ernest Johnson and Lelia Plowden.

Sterling Marlow

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Sterling Jaykub Bruce Marlow, 2 ˝ year old son of Collie Day and Traci Dale Marlow, are 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Zion Baptist Church, with burial in Greenlawn Cemetery and visitation from 6-8 tonight at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home, all in Great Falls. Born April 29, 2002, in Lancaster, he died January 7, 2005. Surviving: parents; grandparents, Trina Lail, James Day.

Carolyn Mattison

LAURENS — Services for Carolyn Simmons Mattison, 59, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Northside Baptist Church, with burial in Westview Memorial Park. Visitation is 7-8:30 tonight at The Kennedy Mortuary. Born in Spartanburg Co. to Carl and Mary Neely Simmons, she died Jan. 7, 2005. Surviving: husband, Dallas Mattison; daughters, Karen Bradley, Pamela Gilstrap, Patricia Staton; three grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild.

Roy McGee

JOHNSTON — Services for Mr. Roy McGee, age 96, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, January 9, 2005, at Philippi Baptist Church with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Bland Funeral Home Saturday night from 6-8 p.m. Memorials may be made to Philippi Baptist Church, c/o Mark Fallaw, 203 Pine Knoll Lane, Edgefield, SC 29824.

Mr. McGee, a native of Edgefield County, died Thursday, January 6, 2005. He was a son of the late Lewis F. and Leila Rhoden McGee, was a retired farmer and a member of Philippi Baptist Church.

Survivors include daughters: Mary Frances Taylor (Bill), Lexington, Joyce M. Gunter (Legare), Cayce; son: Charles Marshall McGee (Beverly), Johnston; grandchildren: Pam Steele, Jan Rinehart, Jenny Yarborough, Tracy Sanford, Dr. Ashley Charles McGee, Angela Fallaw and Alison McGee and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary McGee and by a son, Herman L. McGee.

Elaine McMichael

NEESES — Services with burial for Elaine McNeal McMichael, 45, are 3 p.m. Sunday at Gethsemane Baptist Church near North. Visitation is 3-8 tonight at W.B. Crumel Funeral Home, North. Born to Dorothy McNeal, she died January 5, 2005. Surviving: husband, Ermon McMichael; children, Ermon, C.A., Eric and Ebony McMichael; three brothers; two sisters; grandmother, Marie McNeal; uncles, aunts.
